Turbulent transport of material inclusions plays an important role in many natural and industrial situations. Being able to accurately model and predict the dynamics of dispersed particles transported by a turbulent carrier flow, remains a challenge. One critical and difficult point is to develop models which correctly describe the dynamics of particles over a wide range of sizes and densities. Our measurements show that acceleration statistics of particles dispersed in a turbulent flow do exhibit specific, and so far unpredicted, size and density effects and that they preserve an extremely robust turbulent signature with lognormal fluctuations, regardless of particles size and density. This has important consequences in terms of modeling for the turbulent transport of dispersed inclusions.  相似文献

On the basis of the previously developed asymptotic theory of turbulent particle-laden flow with particle deposition in channels coupled with the transport model for the particle Reynolds stress, an asymptotic solution to the problem on the deposition of particles in the limit of high Reynolds numbers was obtained. The numerical calculations confirmed the presence, in the region of the transition from the diffusion-impaction regime of particle sedimentation to the inertia-moderated regime, bifurcation phenomenon of a solution found previously in earlier studies. Features of particle accumulation in the viscous sublayer are analyzed. On the basis of the numerical solution, correlations for particle deposition velocity were obtained. Boundary conditions of the wall-function type for particle concentration whose use allows widening the applicability limits of the equilibrium Eulerian models in terms of particle inertia are proposed.  相似文献

Intermittent distribution of inertial particles in turbulent flows   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
We consider inertial particles suspended in an incompressible turbulent flow. Because of particles' inertia their flow is compressible, which leads to fluctuations of concentration significant for heavy particles. We show that the statistics of these fluctuations is independent of details of the velocity statistics, which allows us to predict that the particles cluster on the viscous scale of turbulence and describe the probability distribution of concentration fluctuations. We discuss the possible role of the clustering in the physics of atmospheric aerosols, in particular, in cloud formation.  相似文献

Detached eddy simulation (DES) is investigated as a means to study an array of shallow dimples with depth to diameter ratios of 1.5% and 5% in a turbulent channel. The DES captures large-scale flow features relatively well, but is unable to predict skin friction accurately due to flow modelling near the wall. The current work instead relies on the accuracy of DES to predict large-scale flow features, as well as its well-documented reliability in predicting flow separation regions to support the proposed mechanism that dimples reduce drag by introducing spanwise flow components near the wall through the addition of streamwise vorticity. Profiles of the turbulent energy budget show the stabilising effect of the dimples on the flow. The presence of flow separation however modulates the net drag reduction. Increasing the Reynolds number can reduce the size of the separated region and experiments show that this increases the overall drag reduction.  相似文献

By extending traditional particle tracking techniques, we study the dynamics of neutrally buoyant finite-sized particles in a spatiotemporally chaotic flow. We simultaneously measure the flow field and the trajectories of millimeter-scale particles so that the two can be directly compared. While the single-point statistics of the particles are indistinguishable from the flow statistics, the particles often move in directions that are systematically different from the underlying flow. These differences are especially evident when Lagrangian statistics are considered.  相似文献

The shear layer evolution and turbulent structure of near-wake behind a sphere atRe= 11,000 and 5,300 were investigated using a smoke-wire visualization method. A laminar flow separation was found to occur near the equator. The smooth laminar shear layers appeared to be axisymmetrically stable to the downstream location of aboutx/d=1.0 atRe=11,000 andx/d= 1.7∼1.8 atRe=5,300, respectively. At Re=11,000, the vortex ring-shaped protrusions were observed with the onset of shear layer instability. Moreover, the transition from laminar to turbulence in the separated flow region occurred earlier at the hiher Reynolds number ofRe=11,000 than atRe=5,300. The PIV measurements in the streamwise and cross-sectional planes atRe=11,000 clearly revealed the turbulent structures of the sphere wake such as recirculating flow, shear layer instability, vortex roll-up, and small-scale turbulent eddies.  相似文献

The axisymmetric flow around a tear-shaped body with a flare is analyzed by solving the continuity equation, Reynolds equations (closed with the Menter model of shear stress transport), and energy equation. In the solution, a factorized multiblock finite-volume technique embedded in a VP2/3 program package is used. Numerical estimates are compared with aeroballistic tests of a model. Direct-shadow flow patterns are recorded and the trajectory parameters are calculated with the aim of determining the aerodynamic drag at a close-to-zero angle of attack. Interferograms of the axisymmetric flow around the body (M = 4.35) are also taken. The calculated and experimental data for the flow density transverse (radial) distribution are in good agreement. Agreement between the calculation and experiment in the drag coefficient at a close-to-zero angle of attack is also observed.  相似文献

We study the effect of a turbulent flow of liquid sodium generated in the von Kármán geometry, on the localized field of a magnet placed close to the frontier of the flow. We observe that the field can be transported by the flow on distances larger than its integral length scale. In the most turbulent configurations, the mean value of the field advected at large distance vanishes. However, the rms value of the fluctuations increases linearly with the magnetic Reynolds number. The advected field is strongly intermittent.  相似文献

We consider spherical particles immersed in an incompressible, viscous fluid and subject to applied forces. Averaging over a statistical distribution function, which is assumed known, we derive macroscopic equations for the mean convective flow velocity of the suspension and the mean particle current density. The two equations are coupled and involve four response kernels of short range. We show that two of the kernels are related by symmetry.  相似文献

It is known that the flying characteristics of the golf ball is influenced by flying speed, rotational frequencies and the dimples, etc. In this study, the drag and lift acting on the test balls are measured using a three components loadcell by changing Reynolds number and the spin rate ratio, the number and the depth of dimples. And the flow around the balls is visualized by applying the oil film method and PIV in the stationary state. From these results, the aerodynamic drag and lift coefficients of the balls in the stationary and the rotational state are made clear.  相似文献

The motion of a large, neutrally buoyant, particle freely advected by a turbulent flow is determined experimentally. We demonstrate that both the translational and angular accelerations exhibit very wide probability distributions, a manifestation of intermittency. The orientation of the angular velocity with respect to the trajectory, as well as the translational acceleration conditioned on the spinning velocity, provides evidence of a lift force acting on the particle.  相似文献

The inertial range for a statistical turbulent velocity field consists of those scales that are larger than the dissipation scale but smaller than the integral scale. Here the complete scale-invariant explicit inertial range renormalization theory for all the higher-order statistics of a diffusing passive scalar is developed in a model which, despite its simplicity, involves turbulent diffusion by statistical velocity fields with arbitrarily many scales, infrared divergence, long-range spatial correlations, and rapid fluctuations in time-such velocity fields retain several characteristic features of those in fully developed turbulence. The main tool in the development of this explicit renormalization theory for the model is an exact quantum mechanical analogy which relates higher-order statistics of the diffusing scalar to the properties of solutions of a family ofN- body parabolic quantum problems. The canonical inertial range renormalized statistical fixed point is developed explicitly here as a function of the velocity spectral parameter, which measures the strength of the infrared divergence: for<2, mean-field behavior in the inertial range occurs with Gaussian statistical behavior for the scalar and standard diffusive scaling laws; for>2 a phase transition occurs to a fixed point with anomalous inertial range scaling laws and a non-Gaussian renormalized statistical fixed point. Several explicit connections between the renormalization theory in the model and intermediate asymptotics are developed explicitly as well as links between anomalous turbulent decay and explicit spectral properties of Schrödinger operators. The differences between this inertial range renormalization theory and the earlier theories for large-scale eddy diffusivity developed by Avellaneda and the author in such models are also discussed here.  相似文献

The interaction between finite-size particles and turbulent channel flow in the absence of gravity is studied by direct numerical simulations (DNS). The study is motivated by DNS observations of a turbulent channel flow with high-density, pointwise particles, that cluster in regions of high streamwise root-mean-square (RMS) acceleration close to the wall, contrary to what is observed in homogeneous isotropic turbulence. The aim of the present study is to explore if this is still the case when size effects are taken into account in the DNS. Based on the analysis of the velocity and acceleration statistics, the present DNS shows that, close to the wall, particles with ρpf ranging from 2 to 4 are surrounded by regions with low streamwise RMS velocity but high streamwise RMS acceleration. According to the normalised particle acceleration probability density functions (PDFs), size effects become important in the near-wall region. As particle inertia increases, the normalised PDFs of particle acceleration tend to a Gaussian distribution. The tails of the normalised PDFs of the fluid conditioned by the presence of particles are higher than that of the unconditioned fluid close to the wall.  相似文献

Using a multi-scaled, chaotic flow known as the KS model of turbulence [J.C.H. Fung, J.C.R. Hunt, A. Malik, R.J. Perkins, Kinematic simulation of homogeneous turbulence by unsteady random fourier modes, J. Fluid Mech. 236 (1992) 281-318], we investigate the dependence of Lyapunov exponents on various characteristics of the flow. We show that the KS model yields a power law relation between the Reynolds number and the maximum Lyapunov exponent, which is similar to that for a turbulent flow with the same energy spectrum. Our results show that the Lyapunov exponents are sensitive to the advection of small eddies by large eddies, which can be explained by considering the Lagrangian correlation time of the smallest scales. We also relate the number of stagnation points within a flow to the maximum Lyapunov exponent, and suggest a linear dependence between the two characteristics.  相似文献
