A series of poly(aryl ether) dendrons with a monopyrrolo‐tetrathiafulvalene unit linked through an acyl hydrazone linkage were designed and synthesized as low molecular mass organogelators (LMOGs). Two of the dendrons could gelate the aromatic solvents and some solvent mixtures, but the others could not gel all solvents tested except for n‐pentanol. A subtle change on the molecular structure produces a great influence on the gelation behavior. Note that the dendrons could form the stable gel in the DMSO/water mixture without thermal treatment and could also form the binary gel with fullerene (C60) in toluene. The formed gels undergo a reversible gel–sol phase transition upon exposure to external stimuli, such as temperature and chemical oxidation/reduction. A number of experiments (SEM, FTIR spectroscopy, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy, and XRD) revealed that these dendritic molecules self‐assembled into elastically interpenetrating one‐dimensional fibrillar aggregates and maintain rectangular molecular‐packing mode in organogels. The hydrogen bonding, π–π, and donor–acceptor interactions were found to be the main driving forces for formation of the gels. Moreover, the gel system exhibited gel‐induced enhanced emission (GIEE) property in the visible region in spite of the absence of a conventional fluorophore unit and the fluorescence was effectively quenched by introduction of C60.  相似文献

The spontaneous hydrogel formation of a sort of biocompatible and biodegradable amphiphilic block copolymer in water was observed, and the underlying gelling mechanism was assumed. A series of ABA‐type triblock copolymers [poly(D,L ‐lactic acid‐co‐glycolic acid)‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(D,L ‐lactic acid‐co‐glycolic acid)] and different derivatives end‐capped by small alkyl groups were synthesized, and the aqueous phase behaviors of these samples were studied. The virgin triblock copolymers and most of the derivatives exhibited a temperature‐dependent reversible sol–gel transition in water. Both the poly(D,L ‐lactic acid‐co‐glycolic acid) length and end group were found to significantly tune the gel windows in the phase diagrams, but with different behaviors. The critical micelle concentrations were much lower than the associated critical gel concentrations, and an intact micellar structure remained after gelation. A combination of various measurement techniques confirmed that the sol–gel transition with an increase in the temperature was induced not simply via the self‐assembly of amphiphilic polymer chains but also via the further hydrophobic aggregation of micelles resulting in a micelle network due to a large‐scale self‐assembly. The coarsening of the micelle network was further suggested to account for the transition from a transparent gel to an opaque gel. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. MPEG–PCL diblock copolymers consisting of methoxy polyethylene glycol (MPEG, 750 g/mol) and poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization. Aqueous solutions of the synthesized diblock copolymers were prepared by dissolving the MPEG–PCL diblock copolymers at concentrations in the range of 0–20 wt %. When the PCL molecular weight was 3000 or greater, the polymer was only partially soluble in water. As the temperature was increased from room temperature, the diblock copolymer solutions showed two phase transitions: a sol‐to‐gel transition and a gel‐to‐sol transition. The sol‐to‐gel phase transition temperature decreased substantially with increasing PCL length. The sol–gel–sol transition with the increase in temperature was confirmed by monitoring the viscosity as a function of temperature. The temperature ranges of the phase transitions measured by the tilting method were in full agreement with those determined from the viscosity measurements. The maximum viscosity of the copolymer solution increased with increasing hydrophobicity of the diblock copolymer and with increasing copolymer concentration. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses revealed that the diblock copolymers exhibited crystalline domains that favored the formation of an aggregated gel because of the tight aggregation and strong packing interactions between PCL blocks. Scanning electron micrographs of the diblock copolymer solutions in the sol state showed interconnected polyhedral pore structures, whereas those of the gel state revealed a fibrillar‐like morphology. Atomic force microscope (AFM) studies of the sol and gel surfaces showed that the sol surface was covered with fine globular particles, whereas the gel surface was covered with particles in micron‐scale irregular islets. These findings are consistent with uniform mixing of the diblock copolymer and water in the sol state, and aggregation of PCL blocks in the gel state. In conclusion, we confirm that the MPEG–PCL diblock copolymer solution exhibited a sol–gel–sol transition as a function of temperature. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Diblock copolymers consisting of methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (MPEG) and poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL), poly(δ‐valerolactone) (PVL), poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA), or poly(lactic‐co‐glycolic acid) (PLGA) as biodegradable polyesters were prepared to examine the phase transition of diblock copolymer solutions. MPEG–PCL and MPEG–PVL diblock copolymers and MPEG–PLLA and MPEG–PLGA diblock copolymers were synthesized by the ring‐opening polymerization of ?‐caprolactone or δ‐valerolactone in the presence of HCl · Et2O as a monomer activator at room temperature and by the ring‐opening polymerization of L ‐lactide or a mixture of L ‐lactide and glycolide in the presence of stannous octoate at 130 °C, respectively. The synthesized diblock copolymers were characterized with 1H NMR, IR, and gel permeation chromatography. The phase transitions for diblock copolymer aqueous solutions of various concentrations were explored according to the temperature variation. The diblock copolymer solutions exhibited the phase transition from gel to sol with increasing temperature. As the polyester block length of the diblock copolymers increased, the gel‐to‐sol transition moved to a lower concentration region. The gel‐to‐sol transition showed a dependence on the length of the polyester block segment. According to X‐ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry thermal studies, the gel‐to‐sol transition of the diblock copolymer solutions depended on their degrees of crystallinity because water could easily diffuse into amorphous polymers in comparison with polymers with a crystalline structure. The crystallinity markedly depended on both the distinct character and composition of the block segment. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 5784–5793, 2004  相似文献

In this work, we compared formation and properties of heat‐treated Ag nanoparticles in silica matrix synthesized by RF‐reactive magnetron cosputtering and sol–gel methods separately. The sol–gel and sputtered films were annealed at different temperatures in air and in a reduced environment, respectively. The optical UV‐visible spectrophotometry have shown that the absorption peak appears at 456 and 400 nm wavelength indicating formation of silver nanoparticles in SiO2 matrix for both the sol–gel and sputtering methods at 100 and 800 °C, respectively. XPS measurements showed that the metallic Ag0 nanoparticles can be obtained from both the techniques at these temperatures. According to XPS and AFM analysis, by increasing annealing temperature, the concentration of the Ag nanoparticles on the surface decreased and the nanoparticles diffused into the substrate for the sol–gel films, while for the films deposited by cosputtering method, the Ag surface concentration increased by increasing the temperature. Based on AFM observations, the size of nanoparticles on the surface were obtained at about 25 and 55 nm for sputtered and sol–gel films, respectively, supporting our optical data analysis. In comparison, the sputtering technique can produce Ag metallic nanoparticles with a narrower particle size distribution relative to the sol–gel method. Poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐polycaprolactone (MPEG‐PCL) diblock copolymers were synthesized via a ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐CL monomers with MPEG as an initiator. Their solubilities and apparent critical micelle concentrations (CMC) in aqueous solution were investigated as well as the determination of the micellar hydrodynamic diameter using dynamic light scattering (DLS). As PCL block length increased, the solubility and CMC decreased while diameters of micelles increased. The gel–sol transition behaviors were investigated using a vial tilting method. Aqueous solutions of copolymers undergo a gel to sol transition with increase in temperature when their polymer concentrations are above a critical gel concentration (CGC). The CGC of the copolymers and gel–sol transition temperature are influenced by the PCL chain length. The tapping mode AFM was performed by imaging the freeze‐dried deposits from the copolymer solutions on mica to investigate a process from free chains to micelles and to gel. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Organic–inorganic hybrids based on poly(butyleneadipate‐co‐terephthalate)/titanium dioxide (PBAT/TiO2) hybrid membranes were prepared via a sol–gel process. The PBAT/TiO2 hybrid membranes were prepared for various PBAT/TiO2 ratios. The resulting hybrids were characterized with a morphological structure, hydrophilicity, biodegradability, and thermal properties. The results showed that macrovoids underwent a transition into a sponge‐like membrane structure with the addition of TiO2. After sol–gel transition, a strong interaction between the inorganic network and polymeric chains led to an increase in glass transition temperature (Tg), thermal degrading temperature, and hydrophilicity, and hence a higher biodegradability. According to X‐ray diffraction measurements of the crystal structure of the hybrid, the presence of TiO2 did not change the crystal structure of PBAT. TiO2 networks are uniformly dispersed into the PBAT matrix and no aggregation of TiO2 networks in the hybrid membranes was observed through the small angle X‐ray scattering measurements. Thus, the sol–gel process of PBAT and TiO2 can be used to prepare a hybrid with higher application temperature and faster biodegradation rate. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Supramolecular hydrogels are a class of self‐assembled network structures formed via non‐covalent interactions of the hydrogelators. These hydrogels capable of responding to external stimuli are considered to be smart materials due to their ability to undergo sol–gel and/or gel–sol transition upon subtle changes in their surroundings. Such stimuli‐responsive hydrogels are intriguing biomaterials with applications in tissue engineering, delivery of cells and drugs, modulating tissue environment to promote innate tissue repair, and imaging for medical diagnostics among others. This review summarizes the recent developments in stimuli‐responsive supramolecular hydrogels and their potential applications in regenerative medicine. Specifically, various structural aspects of supramolecular hydrogelators involved in self‐assembly, the role of external stimuli in tuning/controlling their phase transitions, and how these functions could be harnessed to advance applications in regenerative medicine are focused on. Finally, the key challenges and future prospects for these versatile materials are briefly described.  相似文献

A series of aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) fluorescent gelators (TPE‐Cn‐Chol) were synthesized by attaching tetraphenylethylene (TPE) to cholesterol through an alkyl chain. The properties of the gel, nano‐/microaggregate, and condensed phases were studied carefully. TPE‐Cn‐Chol molecules form AIE fluorescent gels in acetone and in DMF. Their fluorescence can be reversibly switched between the “on” and “off” states by a gel–sol phase transition upon thermal treatment. The AIE properties of aggregated nano‐/microstructures in acetone/water mixtures with different water fractions were studied by using fluorescence spectrometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In different acetone/water mixtures, the TPE‐Cn‐Chol molecules formed different nano‐/microaggregates, such as rodlike crystallites and spherical nanoparticles that showed different fluorescence colors. Finally, the condensed phase behavior of TPE‐Cn‐Chol was studied by using polarizing microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), fluorescence spectrometry, fluorescence optical microscopy, and wide‐angle X ray scattering (WAXS). The clover‐shaped TPE unit introduced into the rodlike cholesterol mesogen inhibits not only the formation of a liquid‐crystal phase but also recrystallization upon cooling from the isotropic liquid phase. Very interestingly, TPE‐Cn‐Chol molecules in the condensed state change their fluorescence color under external stimuli, such as melting, grinding, and solvent fuming. The phase transition is the origin of these thermo‐, mechano‐, and vapochromic properties. These findings offer a simple and interesting platform for the creation of multistimuli‐responsive fluorescent sensors.  相似文献

When PEG (M.W.~5000 Daltons) is conjugated to poly(l ‐alanine), the polymer aqueous solutions (<10.0 wt.%) undergo sol‐to‐gel (thermal gelation), whereas it is conjugated to poly(l ‐lactic acid), the polymer aqueous solutions (>30.0 wt.%) undergo gel‐to‐sol (gel melting) as the temperature increases. In the search for molecular origins of such a quite different phase behavior, poly(ethylene glycol)‐poly(l ‐alanine) (PEG‐PA; EG113‐A12) and poly(ethylene glycol)‐poly(l ‐lactic acid) (PEG‐PLA; EG113‐LA12) are synthesized and their aqueous solution behavior is investigated. PEG‐PAs with an α‐helical core assemble into micelles with a broad size distribution, and the dehydration of PEG drives the aggregation of the micelles, leading to thermal gelation, whereas increased molecular motion of the PLA core overwhelms the partial dehydration of PEG, thus gel melting of the PEG‐PLA aqueous solutions occurs. The core‐rigidity of micelles must be one of the key factors in determining whether a polymer aqueous solution undergoes sol‐to‐gel or gel‐to‐sol transition, as the temperature increases. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of comb‐like amphiphilic block copolymer architectures on the physical properties such as sol‐gel transition and micellization behaviors with the change of temperature and pH were examined. Comb‐like poly((poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐(poly(lactic acid‐co‐glycolic acid))acrylate‐co‐acrylic acid) (poly((PEG‐b‐PLGA)A‐co‐AA)) copolymers were synthesized by coupling of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) with two different kinds of PEG‐b‐PLGA diblock copolymers to investigate the effects of the number of branches and hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity on the sol‐gel transition and micellization. The molecular weights and chemical structures were confirmed by GPC and 1H NMR. The number of PEG‐b‐PLGA branches was gradually deviated from the feed molar ratio with increasing the molecular weight and the number of branches and due to the bulkiness of PEG‐b‐PLGA. Poly[(PEG‐b‐PLGA)A‐co‐AA] aqueous solutions showed thermosensitive sol‐gel transition behavior, and the gelation took place at lower concentration with increasing the number of branches and PLGA chain length due to the increase of hydrophobicity. The temperature, at which abrupt increase of viscosity by dynamic rheometer appeared, was also in good agreement with sol‐gel transition by tube‐titling method. The CMC, calculated from UV‐Visible spectroscopy using DPH as hydrophobic dye, also decreased with increasing the number of PEG‐b‐PLGA branches and PLGA chain length with same reason. The micelle size was increased with increasing temperature at the initial stage, however, decreased with further increase of temperature, since the micelles were, first, aggregated by hydrophobic intermolecular interaction, and then fragmented by dehydration of PEG segments with increasing temperature. PH‐sensitive PAA backbone played a key role in physical properties. With decreasing pH, sol‐to‐gel transition temperature, CMC values, and micelle size were decreased because of the increase of hydrophobicity resulting form non‐ionized acrylic acid. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermo‐reversible phase behaviors and rheological properties of a pentablock terpolymer solution, poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(propylene oxide)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM150‐PEO136‐PPO45‐PEO136‐PNIPAM150), are investigated in comparison with its precursor, PEO136‐PPO45‐PEO136 (F108). It is found that the critical gelation concentration of the terpolymer solution is only about 11 wt %, which is significantly lower than that of F108 solution (~22 wt %). The 11 wt % terpolymer solution displays higher viscosity, stronger gel strength, and fast thermo‐responsive behavior compared with the 22 wt % F108 solution. The 11 wt % terpolymer solution shows a typical Newtonian fluid behavior at 30 °C due to the presence of individual spherical micelles, and presents an elastic gel property at 41 °C because of the formation of the close‐packed micelle aggregates. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo‐TEM) and variable‐temperature 1H NMR results demonstrate that the sol–gel phase transition mechanism is mainly related to the hydrophilic/hydrophobic transition of PPO and PNIPAM groups by external temperature stimulus. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Conductive hybrids were prepared in a water/ethanol solution via the sol–gel process from an inorganic sol containing carboxyl groups and water‐borne conductive polyaniline (cPANI). The inorganic sol was prepared by the hydrolysis and condensation of methyltriethoxysilane with the condensed product of maleic anhydride and aminopropyltriethoxysilane as a catalyst, for which the carboxyl counterion along the cPANI backbone acted as an electrostatic‐interaction moiety. The existence of this electrostatic interaction could improve the compatibility of the two components and contribute to the homogeneous dispersion of cPANI in the silica phase. The electrostatic‐interaction hybrids displayed a conductivity percolation threshold as low as 1.1 wt % polyaniline in an emeraldine base, showing 2 orders of magnitude higher electrical conductivity than that without electrostatic interactions. The electrostatic‐interaction hybrids also showed good water resistance; the electrical conductivity with a cPANI loading of 16 wt % underwent a slight change after 14 days of soaking in water. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic poly[(ε‐caprolactone)‐co‐glycolide]‐block‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly[(ε‐caprolactone)‐co‐glycolide) [P(CL‐GL)‐PEG‐P(CL‐GL)] triblock copolymers with different average lengths of caproyl sequences (LCL) were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization at different temperatures. A 25% aqueous solution of the copolymer with LCL = 11.0 formed a gel, owing to strong crystallinity‐induced hydrophobicity at low temperature, and underwent a gel‐sol transition (UCST behavior) when the temperature was increased to 40 °C. In contrast, the solution of copolymer with LCL = 6.7 underwent a sol‐gel transition (LCST behavior) due to micelle aggregation. However, a clear sol‐turbid sol phase transition was observed for the copolymer with more random microstructures (LCL = 5.2).

The past decade has witnessed significantly increased interest in the development of smart polypeptide‐based organo‐ and hydrogel systems with stimuli responsiveness, especially those that exhibit sol–gel phase‐transition properties, with an anticipation of their utility in the construction of adaptive materials, sensor designs, and controlled release systems, among other applications. Such developments have been facilitated by dramatic progress in controlled polymerizations of α‐amino acid N‐carboxyanhydrides (NCAs), together with advanced orthogonal functionalization techniques, which have enabled economical and practical syntheses of well‐defined polypeptides and peptide hybrid polymeric materials. One‐dimensional stacking of polypeptides or peptide aggregations in the forms of certain ordered conformations, such as α helices and β sheets, in combination with further physical or chemical cross‐linking, result in the construction of three‐dimensional matrices of polypeptide gel systems. The macroscopic sol–gel transitions, resulting from the construction or deconstruction of gel networks and the conformational changes between secondary structures, can be triggered by external stimuli, including environmental factors, electromagnetic fields, and (bio)chemical species. Herein, the most recent advances in polypeptide gel systems are described, covering synthetic strategies, gelation mechanisms, and stimuli‐triggered sol–gel transitions, with the aim of demonstrating the relationships between chemical compositions, supramolecular structures, and responsive properties of polypeptide‐based organo‐ and hydrogels.  相似文献

This work reports on the synthesis of Li‐doped TiO2 nanoparticles using the sol–gel process and solid‐state sintering, and investigates their potential use as a photocatalyst for degradation under sunlight excitation of different organic model compounds in aqueous solution. The structure of the nanocrystals was examined by X‐ray diffraction, UV‐vis ground state diffuse reflectance absorption spectra and X‐ray photoelectron emission spectroscopy. Results showed that samples prepared by sol–gel process and calcined at 400 °C are composed of a mixture of anatase and rutile phases, in contrast to the one prepared by solid‐state sintering, which exhibits an anatase phase with Li being involved in a spinel phase. The photocatalytic degradation of aqueous solutions of different aromatic compounds was successfully achieved under sunlight excitation in presence of Li‐doped TiO2 prepared via sol–gel process. It was shown that the calcination temperature and the preparation mode greatly affect the photocatalytic efficiency. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The construction of stimuli‐responsive materials by using naturally occurring molecules as building blocks has received increasing attention owing to their bioavailability, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. Herein, a symmetrical azobenzene‐functionalized natural glycyrrhizic acid (trans‐ GAG ) was synthesized and could form stable supramolecular gels in DMSO/H2O and MeOH/H2O. Owing to transcis isomerization, this gel exhibited typical light‐responsive behavior that led to a reversible gel–sol transition accompanied by a variation in morphology and rheology. Additionally, this trans‐ GAG gel displayed a distinct injectable self‐healing property and outstanding biocompatibility. This work provides a simple yet rational strategy to fabricate stimuli‐responsive materials from naturally occurring, eco‐friendly molecules.  相似文献

Comb‐like amphiphilic poly(poly((lactic acid‐co‐glycolic acid)‐block‐poly(ethylene glycol)) methacrylate (poly((PLGA‐b‐PEG)MA)) copolymers were synthesized by radical polymerization. (PLGA‐b‐PEG)MA macromonomer was prepared by ring‐opening bulk polymerization of DL ‐lactide and glycolide using purified poly(ethylene glycol) monomethacrylate (PEGMA) as an initiator. (PLGA‐b‐PEG)MA macromonomer was copolymerized with PEGMA and/or acrylic acid (AA) by radical polymerization to produce comb‐like amphiphilic block copolymers. The molecular weight and chemical structure were investigated by GPC and 1H NMR. Poly((PLGA‐b‐PEG)MA) copolymer aqueous solutions showed gel–sol transition behavior with increasing temperature, and gel‐to‐sol transition temperature decreased as the compositions of the hydrophilic PEGMA and AA increased. The gel‐to‐sol transition temperature of the terpolymers of the poly((PLGA‐b‐PEG)MA‐co‐PEGMA‐co‐AA) also decreased when the pH was increased. The effective micelle diameter obtained from dynamic light scattering increased with increasing temperature and with increasing pH. The critical micelle concentration increased as the composition of the hydrophilic monomer component, PEGMA and AA, were increased. The spherical shape of the hyperbranched polymers in aqueous environment was observed by atomic force microscopy. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Terpolymers composed of Nn‐propylacrylamide (NPAAm), butyl methacrylate (BMA), and N,N‐diethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) were prepared in an attempt to investigate the temperature‐induced phase transition and its mechanism. Poly(NPAAm) showed the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) around 24°C in water. With the incorporation of DEAEMA with NPAAm, the LCST change was characterized by an initial increase. However, the LCST was shifted to the lower temperature at the later stage. This might be explained in terms of hydrophilic/hydrophobic contribution of DEAEMA to the LCST. The swelling behavior of copolymer gel in the various solvents and spin‐lattice relaxation time (T1) study by NMR strongly suggested the hydrophilic/hydrophobic contribution of DEAEMA to the LCST depending on the local environment. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
