Neuromagnetic steady-state responses to auditory stimuli   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
Steady-state magnetic responses to clicks presented at rates between 10 and 70 Hz have been recorded in healthy humans. The responses were highest in amplitude around 40 Hz. This amplitude enhancement is satisfactorily explained by summation of responses evoked by single clicks. The field maps suggest activation of the auditory cortex at all stimulus frequencies. Similar responses were obtained with gated noise bursts and by pauses in a series of clicks. The mean "apparent latency," determined from the phase lag at rates 30-70 Hz, was 54 ms. The physiological relevance of this quantity is shown to be questionable.  相似文献

Frequency specificity of chirp-evoked auditory brainstem responses   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
This study examines the usefulness of the upward chirp stimulus developed by Dau et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 107, 1530-1540 (2000)] for retrieving frequency-specific information. The chirp was designed to produce simultaneous displacement maxima along the cochlear partition by compensating for frequency-dependent traveling-time differences. In the first experiment, auditory brainstem responses (ABR) elicited by the click and the broadband chirp were obtained in the presence of high-pass masking noise, with cutoff frequencies of 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8 kHz. Results revealed a larger wave-V amplitude for chirp than for click stimulation in all masking conditions. Wave-V amplitude for the chirp increased continuously with increasing high-pass cutoff frequency while it remains nearly constant for the click for cutoff frequencies greater than 1 kHz. The same two stimuli were tested in the presence of a notched-noise masker with one-octave wide spectral notches corresponding to the cutoff frequencies used in the first experiment. The recordings were compared with derived responses, calculated offline, from the high-pass masking conditions. No significant difference in response amplitude between click and chirp stimulation was found for the notched-noise responses as well as for the derived responses. In the second experiment, responses were obtained using narrow-band stimuli. A low-frequency chirp and a 250-Hz tone pulse with comparable duration and magnitude spectrum were used as stimuli. The narrow-band chirp elicited a larger response amplitude than the tone pulse at low and medium stimulation levels. Overall, the results of the present study further demonstrate the importance of considering peripheral processing for the formation of ABR. The chirp might be of particular interest for assessing low-frequency information.  相似文献

Automatic threshold detection techniques are described for auditory steady-state response (ASSR) elicited with a sinusoidally amplitude-modulated tone. The reliability and frequency specificity of ASSR are discussed. When applied to awake adults and detected by phase spectral analysis, 40-Hz ASSR threshold patterns closely resemble their corresponding audiograms. However, 40-Hz ASSR is insufficiently reliable for determining hearing thresholds in young children during sleep. On the other hand, 80-Hz ASSR is detected clearly in sleeping children. Moreover, 80-Hz ASSR threshold patterns also closely resemble the corresponding audiograms. Therefore, 80-Hz ASSR appears to be useful for objective audiometry in children.  相似文献

The cerebral magnetic field of the auditory steady-state response (SSR) to sinusoidal amplitude-modulated (SAM) tones was recorded in healthy humans. The waveforms of underlying cortical source activity were calculated at multiples of the modulation frequency using the method of source space projection, which improved the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by a factor of 2 to 4. Since the complex amplitudes of the cortical source activity were independent of the sensor position in relation to the subject's head, a comparison of the results across experimental sessions was possible. The effect of modulation frequency on the amplitude and phase of the SSR was investigated at 30 different values between 10 and 98 Hz. At modulation frequencies between 10 and 20 Hz the SNR of harmonics near 40 Hz were predominant over the fundamental SSR. Above 30 Hz the SSR showed an almost sinusoidal waveform with an amplitude maximum at 40 Hz. The amplitude decreased with increasing modulation frequency but was significantly different from the magnetoencephalographic (MEG) background activity up to 98 Hz. Phase response at the fundamental and first harmonic decreased monotonically with increasing modulation frequency. The group delay (apparent latency) showed peaks of 72 ms at 20 Hz, 48 ms at 40 Hz, and 26 ms at 80 Hz. The effects of stimulus intensity, modulation depth, and carrier frequency on amplitude and phase of the SSR were also investigated. The SSR amplitude decreased linearly when stimulus intensity or the modulation depth were decreased in logarithmic steps. SSR amplitude decreased by a factor of 3 when carrier frequency increased from 250 to 4000 Hz. From the phase characteristics, time delays were found in the range of 0 to 6 ms for stimulus intensity, modulation depth, and carrier frequency, which were maximal at low frequencies, low intensities, or maximal modulation depth.  相似文献

Both distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) and auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) provide frequency-specific assessment of hearing. However, each method suffers from some restrictions. Hearing losses above 50 dB HL are not quantifiable using DPOAEs and their performance at frequencies below 1 kHz is limited, but their recording time is short. In contrast, ASSRs are a time-consuming method but have the ability to determine hearing thresholds in a wider range of frequencies and hearing losses. Thus, recording DPOAEs and ASSRs simultaneously at their adequate frequencies and levels could decrease the overall test time considerably. The goal of the present study was to develop a parameter-setting and test-protocol to measure DPOAEs and ASSRs binaurally and simultaneously at multiple frequencies. Ten normal-hearing and 23 hearing-impaired subjects participated in the study. The interaction of both responses when stimulated simultaneously at frequencies between 0.25 and 6 kHz was examined. Two limiting factors need to be kept. Frequency distance between ASSR carrier frequency f(c) and DPOAE primary tone f(2) needs to be at least 1.5 octaves, and DPOAEs may not be measured if the ASSR stimulus level is 70 dB SPL or above. There was a significant correlation between pure-tone and DPOAE/ASSR-thresholds in sensorineural hearing loss ears.  相似文献

The frequency specificity of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) was examined by means of pure-tone masking profiles using click, 4000-Hz, and 1000-Hz filtered-click stimuli. Simultaneous pure-tone maskers were presented at one-half octave intervals around stimulus center frequency. Masking profiles at two intensities (60 and 40 dB SL) were obtained by measuring both latency and amplitude shifts in wave V as a result of the discrete-frequency maskers. Both latency and amplitude analyses showed masking profiles at 40 dB SL that were narrow and centered around stimulus frequency, whereas profiles at 60 dB SL showed high-frequency spread of the cochlear excitation area.  相似文献

A maximum auditory steady-state response (ASSR) amplitude is yielded when the ASSR is elicited by an amplitude-modulated tone (f(c)) with a fixed modulation frequency (f(m) = 40 Hz), whereas the maximum distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) level is yielded when the DPOAE is elicited using a fixed frequency ratio of the primary tones (f2/f1 = 1.2). When eliciting the DPOAE and ASSR by the same tone pair, optimal stimulation is present for either DPOAE or ASSR and thus adequate simultaneous DPOAE/ASSR measurement is not possible across test frequency f2 or f(c), respectively. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether the ASSR and DPOAE can be measured simultaneously without notable restrictions using a DPOAE stimulus setting in which one primary tone is amplitude modulated. A DPOAE of frequency 2f1-f2 and ASSR of modulation frequency 41 Hz were measured in ten normal hearing subjects at a test frequency between 0.5 and 8 kHz (f2 = f(c)). The decrease in the DPOAE level and the loss in ASSR amplitude during hybrid mode stimulation amounted, on average, to only 2.60 dB [standard deviation (SD) = 1.38 dB] and 1.83 dB (SD = 2.38 dB), respectively. These findings suggest simultaneous DPOAE and ASSR measurements to be feasible across all test frequencies when using a DPOAE stimulus setting where the primary tone f2 is amplitude modulated.  相似文献

This study investigated the frequency specificity of the auditory brainstem and middle latency responses to 80 and 90 dB ppe SPL 500-Hz and 90 dB ppe SPL 2000-Hz tonebursts. The stimuli were brief (2-1-2 cycle) linear-gated tonebursts. ABR/MLRs were recorded using two electrode montages: (1) Cz-nape of neck and (2) Cz-ipsilateral earlobe. Cochlear contributions to ABR wave V-Na and MLR waves Na-Pa and Pa-Nb were assessed by plotting notched noise tuning curves which showed amplitudes and latencies as a function of center frequency of the noise masker [Abdala and Folsom, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 97, 2394 (1995); ibid. 98, 921 (1995)]. Maxima in the response amplitude profiles for the ABR and MLR to 80 dB ppe SPL tonebursts occurred within one-half octave of the nominal stimulus frequency, with minimal contributions to the responses from frequencies greater than one octave away. At 90 dB ppe SPL, contributions came from a slightly broader frequency region for both stimulus frequencies. Thus, the ABR/MLR to 80 dB ppe SPL tonebursts shows good frequency specificity which decreases at 90 dB ppe SPL. No significant differences exist in frequency specificity of: (1) ABR wave V-Na versus MLR waves Na-Pa and Pa-Nb at either stimulus frequency or intensity; and (2) ABR/MLRs recorded using the two electrode montages.  相似文献

The potential for interactions between steady-state evoked responses to simultaneous auditory stimuli was investigated in two bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). Three experiments were conducted using either a probe stimulus (probe condition) or a probe in the presence of a masker (probe-plus-masker condition). In the first experiment, the probe and masker were sinusoidal amplitude-modulated (SAM) tones. Probe and masker frequencies and masker level were manipulated to provide variable masking conditions. Probe frequencies were 31.7, 63.5, 100.8, and 127.0 kHz. The second experiment was identical to the first except only the 63.5 kHz probe was used and maskers were pure tones. For the third experiment, thresholds were measured for the probe and probe-plus-masker conditions using two techniques, one based on the lowest detectable response and the other based on a regression analysis. Results demonstrated localized masking effects where lower frequency maskers suppressed higher frequency probes and higher amplitude maskers produced a greater masking effect. The pattern of pure tone masking was nearly identical to SAM tone masking. The two threshold estimates were similar in low masking conditions, but in high masking conditions the lowest detectable response tended to overestimate thresholds while the regression-based analysis tended to underestimate thresholds.  相似文献

Auditory steady-state evoked potentials were measured in a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) in response to single and multiple sinusoidal amplitude modulated (SAM) tones. Tests were conducted in air using a "jawphone" sound projector. Evoked potentials were recorded noninvasively using surface electrodes embedded in suction cups. Sound stimuli consisted of SAM tones with 1, 2, 3, or 4 carrier frequencies (10, 20, 30, 40 kHz), each with a unique modulation frequency. Stimulus sound pressure levels were varied in 5-dB steps from approximately 120 to 60-75 dB re 1 microPa, depending on frequency. Evoked potentials followed the temporal envelope of each stimulus, resulting in spectral components at each unique modulation frequency. Spectral analysis was used to evaluate the response amplitude for each carrier as a function of stimulus level. There were no significant differences between thresholds obtained with single and multiple stimuli at 10, 30, and 40 kHz. At 20 kHz, thresholds obtained with three components were higher than those obtained with four components, possibly revealing interactions between stimuli with less than one octave frequency separation. The use of multiple SAM stimuli may offer substantial advantages for studies of marine mammal hearing, where testing time and access to subjects are typically limited.  相似文献

Sets of regularly repeating auditory stimuli elicit unique perceptions; listeners are able to identify specific temporal patterns. Some temporal patterns are unambiguous (only one pattern can be perceived), while others are ambiguous (numerous patterns can be detected). While the psychophysical properties of such percepts have been well studied, little is known about the underlying neurological bases of temporal pattern perception. In this experiment, the role of adaptation in temporal pattern perception is examined by studying neural responses in four cats to a temporal pattern that is perceptually unambiguous and one that is perceptually ambiguous. Measurements were made of the whole-nerve action potential, the auditory brainstem response, and potentials from the surface of the primary auditory cortex. The adaptation patterns corresponded with the perceptual organization of temporal patterns in humans at all levels of the nervous system studied.  相似文献

A quantitative model is presented that describes the formation of auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) to tone pulses, clicks, and rising chirps as a function of stimulation level. The model computes the convolution of the instantaneous discharge rates using the "humanized" nonlinear auditory-nerve model of Zilany and Bruce [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 122, 402-417 (2007)] and an empirically derived unitary response function which is assumed to reflect contributions from different cell populations within the auditory brainstem, recorded at a given pair of electrodes on the scalp. It is shown that the model accounts for the decrease of tone-pulse evoked wave-V latency with frequency but underestimates the level dependency of the tone-pulse as well as click-evoked latency values. Furthermore, the model correctly predicts the nonlinear wave-V amplitude behavior in response to the chirp stimulation both as a function of chirp sweeping rate and level. Overall, the results support the hypothesis that the pattern of ABR generation is strongly affected by the nonlinear and dispersive processes in the cochlea.  相似文献

Responses of large populations of auditory-nerve fibers to synthesized steady-state vowels were recorded in anesthetized cats. Driven discharge rate to vowels, normalized by dividing by saturation rate (estimated from the driven rate to CF tones 50 dB above threshold), was plotted versus fiber CF for a number of vowel levels. For the vowels /I/ and /e/, such rate profiles showed a peak in the region of the first formant and another in the region of the second and third formants, for sound levels below about 70 dB SPL. For /a/ at levels below about 40 dB SPL there are peaks in the region of the first and second formants. At higher levels these peaks disappear for all the vowels because of a combination of rate saturation and two-tone suppression. This must be qualified by saying that rate profiles plotted separately for units with spontaneous rates less than one spike per second may retain peaks at higher levels. Rate versus level functions for units with CFs above the first formant can saturate at rates less than the saturation rate to CF to-es or they can be nonmonotonic; these effects are most likely produced by the same mechanism as that involved in two-tone suppression.  相似文献

In 35 adult human subjects(58 ears)thresholds of rarefactlon clickevoked otoacoustic emission(EOAE),behavioral response(BR)and auditorybrainstem response(ABR)were measured and compared, and correlationcoefficients(r)among them calculated. The results revealed that 86% of themeasured thresholds were in the range from 10 to 45 dB(nHL)for EOAE,88% from 10 to 25 dB for BR and 88% from 10 to 35 for ABR.The correlationcoefficients for the whole threshold sample were 0.415(p<0.002)for EOAE vs.BR,0.501(p<0.001)for EOAE vs.ABR and 0.702(p<0.001)for ABR vs.BR,all indicating highly significant correlation. However, for those ears whoseBR,ABR or EOAE thresholds were elevated, equaling to or exceeding 25 dB,there is no significant correlation between thresholds of EOAE and BR and ofEOAE and ABR(r range:0.176-0.310,p>0.05).In contrast, significantcorrelation between BR and ABR thresholds in the same conditions still re-mained(r:0.533-0.720,p<0.05).The experimental results indicate that thecorrelation between EOAE and hea

The objective of this study is to evaluate the recovery of hearing function of auditory pathway after cochlear implantation by extracting the characterizations of electrically evoked auditory brainstem responses (EABR). The purpose of this study was to explore a reality and possible EABR test mode in clinical applications, rather than strict animal research.  相似文献

The influence of different memory systems and associated attentional processes on the acuity of auditory images, formed for the purpose of making intonation judgments, was examined across three experiments using three different task types (cued-attention, imagery, and two-tone discrimination). In experiment 1 the influence of implicit long-term memory for musical scale structure was manipulated by varying the scale degree (leading tone versus tonic) of the probe note about which a judgment had to be made. In experiments 2 and 3 the ability of short-term absolute pitch knowledge to develop was manipulated by presenting blocks of trials in the same key or in seven different keys. The acuity of auditory images depended on all of these manipulations. Within individual listeners, thresholds in the two-tone discrimination and cued-attention conditions were closely related. In many listeners, cued-attention thresholds were similar to thresholds in the imagery condition, and depended on the amount of training individual listeners had in playing a musical instrument. The results indicate that mental images formed at a sensory/cognitive interface for the purpose of making perceptual decisions are highly malleable.  相似文献

This study investigates the use of chirp stimuli to compensate for the cochlear traveling wave delay. The temporal dispersion in the cochlea is given by the traveling time, which in this study is estimated from latency-frequency functions obtained from (1) a cochlear model, (2) tone-burst auditory brain stem response (ABR) latencies, (3) and narrow-band ABR latencies. These latency-frequency functions are assumed to reflect the group delay of a linear system that modifies the phase spectrum of the applied stimulus. On the basis of this assumption, three chirps are constructed and evaluated in 49 normal-hearing subjects. The auditory steady-state responses to these chirps and to a click stimulus are compared at two levels of stimulation (30 and 50 dB nHL) and a rate of 90s. The chirps give shorter detection time and higher signal-to-noise ratio than the click. The shorter detection time obtained by the chirps is equivalent to an increase in stimulus level of 20 dB or more. The results indicate that a chirp is a more efficient stimulus than a click for the recording of early auditory evoked responses in normal-hearing adults using transient sounds at a high rate of stimulation.  相似文献
