Cationic bulk polymerization of L ,L‐ lactide (LA) initiated by trifluromethanesulfonic acid [triflic acid (TfA)] has been studied. At temperatures 120–160 °C, polymerization proceeded to high conversion (>90% within ~8 h) giving polymers with Mn ~ 2 × 104 and relatively high dispersity. Thermogravimetric analysis of resulting polylactide (PLA) indicated that its thermal stability was considerably higher than the thermal stability of linear PLA of comparable molecular weight obtained with ROH/Sn(Oct)2 initiating system. Also hydrolytic stability of cationically prepared PLA was significantly higher than hydrolytic stability of linear PLA. Because thermal or hydrolytic degradation of PLA starting from end‐groups is considerably faster than random chain scission, both thermal and hydrolytic stability depend on molecular weight of the polymer. High thermal and hydrolytic stability, in spite of moderate molecular weight of cationically prepared PLA, indicate that the fraction of end‐groups is considerably lower than in linear PLA of comparable molecular weight. According to proposed mechanism of cationic LA polymerization growing macromolecules are fitted with terminal ? OH and ? C(O)OSO2CF3 end‐groups. The presence of those groups allows efficient end‐to‐end cyclization. Cyclic nature of resulting PLA explains its higher thermal and hydrolytic stability as compared with linear PLA. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work examines the stereochemical control and polymerizability of exo‐methylene‐lactide (MLA) or (6S)‐3‐methylene‐6‐methyl‐1,4‐dioxane‐2,5‐dione, a chiral monomer derived from l ‐lactide, toward vinyl‐addition and ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) pathways, respectively. Currently, no information on the stereochemistry of the vinyl‐addition polymerization of MLA is known, and the possible ROP pathway is unexplored. Accordingly, this work first investigated the stereochemical control and other characteristics of the radical polymerization of MLA and its copolymerization with an analogous exo‐methylene‐lactone, γ‐methyl‐α‐methylene‐γ‐butyrolactone (MMBL), and di‐methylene‐lactide (DMLA) or 3,6‐dimethylene‐1,4‐dioxane‐2,5‐dione. The MLA homopolymerization produced optically active, but atactic, vinyl‐type polymers having a specific rotation of [α]23D = ?42 ± 4°, a high Tg from 229 to 254 °C, and a medium (Mw = 76.3 kg/mol, ? = 1.16) to high (Mw = 358 kg/mol, ? = 2.83) molecular weight, depending on the solvent. The copolymerization of MLA with MMBL afforded copolymers exhibiting enhanced thermal stability, while its copolymerization with DMLA led to cross‐linked polymers. The results obtained from the model reactions designed to probe the possible ROP indicate that the nonpolymerizability of MLA by initiators or catalysts comprising acidic, protic, and/or nucleophilic reagents is due to the high sensitivity of MLA toward such common ROP reagents that trigger decomposition or other types of transformations of MLA forming nonpolymerizable derivatives. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The alcoholysis of the heteroscorpionate methyl aluminum complex (bpzmp)AlMe2 ( 1 ) (bpzmp = 2,4‐di‐tert‐butyl‐6‐(bis‐(3,5‐dimethylpyrazol‐1‐yl)methyl)phenoxo), promoted both by phenol and isopropanol, has been investigated. The reaction of 1 with phenol afforded the dimeric mono(phenoxo) derivative 2 , whereas the alcoholysis of 1 with the less acidic isopropanol involved the coordinated heteroscorpionate ligand and led to the tetrahedral complex 3 in which the aluminum atom is surrounded by one κ2‐N,O? coordinated bpzmp ligand and one η1‐O? coordinated ppzmp ligand (ppzmp = 2,4‐di‐tert‐butyl‐6‐(i‐propoxy‐(3,5‐dimethylpyrazol‐1‐yl)methyl)phenoxo). Complexes 1 – 3 have been tested in the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of L ‐lactide. The dimeric mono(phenoxo) derivative 2 was inactive in the ROP of L ‐lactide. Quite surprisingly, complex 3 was found to be active in ROP of L ‐ and rac‐lactide, showing a good molar‐mass control. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An aluminum/Schiff base complex {[2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propylenebis(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylideneiminato)](isopropanolato)aluminum(III) ( 2 )} based on a bulky ligand and aluminum isopropoxide was prepared and employed for the stereoselective ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of rac-lactide (rac-LA). The initiator was characterized with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), crystal structure measurements, and elemental analysis. It contained a five-coordinate aluminum atom that was trigonal bipyramidal in the solid state according to the crystal structure measurements. The two conformational stereoisomers of 2 exchanged quickly on the NMR scale. Compound 2 polymerized rac-LA into a crystalline polymer that was characterized with 1H NMR, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and gel permeation chromatography. The kinetics of the polymerization were first-order in both the monomer and initiator, and there was a linear relationship between the rac-LA conversion and the number-average molecular weight of poly(rac-LA) with a narrow molecular distribution (1.04–1.08). These features showed that the polymerization was well controlled. The high melting temperature (196–201 °C) and isotacticity of poly(rac-LA) indicated that complex 2 was a highly stereoselective initiator for the ROP of rac-LA. The stereoselectivity was as high as 90%, and the stereoblocks of poly(rac-LA) by complex 2 contained an average of 20 units (average block length = 20) of enantiomerically pure lactic acid. The activation energy (23.6 kJ mol−1) was obtained according to an Arrhenius equation. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 5974–5982, 2004  相似文献

The efficacy of a metal‐silsesquioxane, namely, heptaisobutyl (isopropoxyde)titanium‐polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (Ti‐POSS), as initiator of the ring‐opening polymerization of L ‐lactide (LLA) has been assessed. Indeed, as demonstrated by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) measurements, a well‐controlled polymerization occurs via a coordination‐insertion mechanism. Moreover, the above reaction leads to the direct insertion of the silsesquioxane molecule into the polymer backbone, thus producing a hybrid system. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements demonstrated that in comparison with a commercial poly‐L ‐lactide (PLLA), the polymers prepared with Ti‐POSS exhibit a higher crystallinity. Indeed, the presence of silsesquioxane molecules, attached to one end of the polymer chains, has been found to appreciably affect the crystal nucleation density. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New Group 3 metal complexes of the type [LM(CH2SiMe3)2(THF)n] supported by tridentate phosphido‐diphosphine ligands [(o‐C6H4PR2) 2 PH; L1‐H : R = iPr; L2‐H : R = Ph] have been synthesized by reaction of L1‐H and L2‐H with [M(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2)] (M = Y and Sc). All the new complexes [(o‐C6H4PR2) 2 PM(CH2SiMe3)2(THF)n] [M = Y, R = iPr (1), R = Ph (2); M = Sc, R = iPr (3), R = Ph (4)] were studied as initiators for the ring opening polymerization of lactide. The yttrium complexes ( 1 and 2 ) exhibited high activity and good polymerization control, shown by the linear fits in the plot of number‐averaged molecular weight (Mn) versus the percentage conversion and versus the monomer/initiator ratio and by the low polydispersity index values. Interestingly, very good molar‐mass control was observed even when L ‐Lactide was polymerized in the absence of solvent at 130 °C. A good molar‐mass control but lower activities were observed in the polymerization reaction of lactide promoted by the analogous scandium complexes 3 and 4 . © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of enolic Schiff base aluminum(III) complexes LAlR (where L=NNOO-tetradentate enolic Schiff base ligand) containing ligands that differ in their steric and electronic properties were synthesized. Their single crystals showed that these complexes are five-coordinated around the aluminum center. Their coordination geometries are between square pyramidal and trigonal bipyramidal. Their catalytic properties in the solution polymerization of racemic lactide (rac-LA) were examined. The modifications in the auxiliary ligand exhibited a dramatic influence on the catalytic performance. Lengthening the backbone from C(2) alkylene to C(3) alkylene resulted in remarkable enhancement of both the stereoselectivity and the polymerization rate because of the increasing flexibility of the diimine backbone. Electron-withdrawing substituents in the diketone also highly improved the activity and the stereoselectivity. Among these complexes, 4 b had the highest activity and the stereoselectivity owing to the C(3) alkylene backbone and the two gem-methyl groups on the middle carbon atom. The value of the polymerization rate constant (k(p)) catalyzed by 4 b in 70 degrees C was 1.90 L mol(-1) min(-1), the activation energy of the polymerization (35.4 kJ mol(-1)) was calculated according to the Arrhenius equation. Other factors that influenced the polymerization, such as the polymerization time, the temperature, and the monomer concentration, are also discussed in detail.  相似文献

A series of tertiary aminosquaramides as bifunctional organocatalysts in the ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of l ‐lactide (l ‐LA) were developed, allowing the activation of both the l ‐LA monomer and the alcohol group of the initiator/propagating species. Further, the impact of tertiary nitrogen substituents on catalytic activity in ROP of l ‐LA was explored. The tertiary aminosquaramide— an air‐stable and moisture‐stable catalyst—exhibited superior activity in contest with thiourea counterpart when both were equipped with a similar tertiary amine group. Kinetic and chain‐extension experiments indicated that the formed poly(l ‐LA) is featured with narrow polydispersity and high end‐group fidelity, hallmarks of a living polymerization process. The initiator efficiency was further executed at ease by preparation of an ABA triblock copolymer poly (l ‐LA)‐b‐poly (ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly (l ‐LA) in the presence of a dual‐headed PEG macroinitiator. 1H NMR titration experiments suggested a bifunctional catalytic mechanism, wherein both the l ‐LA monomer and the propagating hydroxyl group were activated en route to polymerization. The 1H NMR, SEC, and MALDI‐TOF MS measurements validated the quantitative incorporation of the initiator in the polymeric chains and enchainment over competitive trans‐esterification reaction. Overall, the structure‐activity relationships were surveyed to uncover aminosquaramide as a new bifunctional dual hydrogen‐bond donor catalyst for living ROP of l ‐LA. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel poly(l ‐lactide) (PLLA)/poly(d ‐lactide) (PDLA)/poly(tetrahydrofuran) (PTHF) multiblock copolymers with designed molecular structure were synthesized by a two‐stage procedure. Well‐defined PDLA‐PLLA‐PTHF‐PLLA‐PDLA pentablock copolymers were prepared by sequential ring opening polymerization of l ‐ and d ‐lactides starting from PTHF glycol, with the length of the (equimolar) PLLA and PDLA blocks being varied. Then, these dihydroxyl‐terminated pentamers were transformed into multiblock copolymers by melt chain‐extension with hexamethylene diisocyanate–being the first time that the coupling of pentablock units is reported. The successful formation of macromolecular chains with a multiblock and well‐defined architecture was demonstrated by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The thermal properties and structuring of the resulting materials were investigated by means of DSC and WAXD measurements and DMA analysis. Stereocomplexation was found to be promoted during solution and melt crystallization. This approach affords materials combining the high rigidity and strength (other than improved thermal resistance) of the hard stereocomplex crystallites with the flexibility imparted by the soft block, whereby their properties can be finely tailored through the composition of the basic pentablock units without limitations on the final molecular weight. The adopted reaction conditions make this process highly appealing in view of the possibility to perform it in extruder. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Highly isotactic polylactide or poly(lactic acid) is synthesized in a ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of racemic lactide with achiral salen- and homosalen-aluminum complexes (salenH(2)=N,N'-bis(salicylidene)ethylene-1,2-diamine; homosalenH(2)=N,N'-bis(salicylidene)trimethylene-1,3-diamine). A systematic exploration of ligands demonstrates the importance of the steric influence of the Schiff base moiety on the degree of isotacticity and the backbone for high activity. The complexes prepared in situ are pure enough to apply to the polymerizations without purification. The crystal structures of the key complexes are elucidated by X-ray diffraction, which confirms that they are chiral. However, analysis of the (1)H and (13)C NMR spectra unambiguously demonstrates that their conformations are so flexible that the chiral environment of the complexes cannot be maintained in solution at 25 degrees C and that the complexes are achiral under the polymerization conditions. The flexibility of the backbone in the propagation steps is also documented. Hence, the isotacticity of the polymer occurs due to a chain-end control mechanism. The highest reactivity in the present system is obtained with the homosalen ligand with 2,2-dimethyl substituents in the backbone (ArCH==NCH(2)CMe(2)CH(2)N==CHAr), whereas tBuMe(2)Si substituents at the 3-positions of the salicylidene moieties lead to the highest selectivity (P(meso)=0.9(8); T(m)=210 degrees C). The ratio of the rate constants in the ROPs of racemic lactide and L-lactide is found to correlate with the stereoselectivity in the present system. The complex can be utilized in bulk polymerization, which is the most attractive in industry, although with some loss of stereoselectivity at high temperature, and the afforded polymer shows a higher melting temperature (P(meso)=0.9(2), T(m) up to 189 degrees C) than that of homochiral poly(L-lactide) (T(m)=162-180 degrees C). The "livingness" of the bulk polymerization at 130 degrees C is maintained even at a high conversion (97-98 %) and for an extended polymerization time (1-2 h).  相似文献

A comparison of tributyltin chloride, dibutyltin dichloride, and butyltin trichloride as catalysts of ring‐opening polymerizations (ROPs) of l‐lactides at 160 °C in bulk reveals increasing reactivity in the above order, but only the least reactive catalysts, Bu3SnCl, yield a uniform reaction product, namely cyclic poly(L‐lactide)s with weight average molecular weights (Mw's) in the range of 40,000–80,000. A comparison of dimethyltin , dibutyltin , and diphenyltin dichlorides resulted in the following order of reactivity: Me2SnCl2 < Bu2SnCl2 < <Ph2SnCl2. In this series also, the most reactive catalyst yields cyclic polylactides, but the extent of cyclization varies with the molecular weight. The formation of cyclic polylactides is explained by ROP combined with simultaneous polycondensation involving end‐to‐end cyclization (ROPPOC method). ROP of meso‐lactide at 80 or 60 °C yields even‐numbered linear chains as main products, a result supporting the ROPPOC mechanism. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. The use of poly(lactide)‐based materials is, in part, limited by their physical and mechanical properties. This article reviews the methods that have been employed to enable enhancement of the materials properties through synthetic manipulation of the polymer structure including block copolymer synthesis and modification of the lactide monomer structure, focusing on the application of ring‐opening polymerization. In turn the effect of these structural modifications on the properties of the resultant materials are reported.

Meso‐Lactide was polymerized in bulk at 60, 80, and 100 °C by means of three different types of catalysts: dibutyltin sulfides (2,2‐dibutyl‐2‐stanna‐1,3‐dithiolane and 2,2′‐dibutyl‐2‐stanna‐1,3‐dithiane), dibutyltin derivatives of substituted catechols (BuCa, CyCa, and BzCa), and dibutyltin derivatives of 2,2′dihydroxybiphenyl (SnBi) and 2,2′‐dihydroxy‐1,1′‐binaphthyl (SnNa). Only the latter two catalysts were active at 60 °C. The architecture of the resulting polylactides depends very much on the structure of the catalyst and on the temperature. At the lowest temperature (60 °C), SnBi and SnNa mainly yielded even‐numbered linear chains, but SnNa also yielded even‐numbered cycles at 100 °C and short reaction times. In contrast, BuCa, CyCa, and BzCa mainly yielded odd‐numbered cycles, although the same catalysts yielded even‐numbered linear chains when benzylalcohol was added. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Three different, new germanium initiators were used for ring‐opening polymerization of L ‐lactide. Chlorobenzene and 120 °C was a usable polymerization system for solution polymerization, and the results from the polymerizations depended on the initiator structure and bulkiness around the insertion site. The average molecular weights as measured by size exclusion chromatography increased linearly with the monomer conversion, and the molecular weight dispersity was around 1.2 for initiators 1 and 2 , whereas it was around 1.4 for initiator 3 . The average molecular weight of poly(L ‐lactide) could be controlled with all three initiators by adding different ratios of monomer and initiator. The reaction rate for the solution polymerization was, however, overall extremely slow. With an initial monomer concentration of 1 M and a monomer‐to‐initiator ratio of 50, the conversion was 93% after 161 h for the fastest initiator. In bulk polymerization, 160 °C, the conversion was 90% after 10 h. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 41: 3074–3082, 2003  相似文献

Cationic copolymerization of racemic‐β‐butyrolactone (β‐BL) with l,l ‐lactide (LA) initiated by alcohol and catalyzed by trifluoromethanesulfonic acid proceeding by activated monomer (AM) mechanism was investigated. Although both comonomers were present from the beginning in the reaction mixture, polymerization proceeded in sequential manner, with poly‐BL formed at the first stage acting as a macroinitiator for the subsequent polymerization of LA. Such course of copolymerization was confirmed by following the consumption of both comonomers throughout the process as well as by observing the changes of growing chain‐end structure using 1H NMR. 13C NMR analysis and thermogravimetry revealed the block structure of resulting copolymers. The proposed mechanism of copolymerization was confirmed by the studies of changes of 1H NMR chemical shift of acidic proton in the course of copolymerization, providing an indication that indeed protonated species and hydroxyl groups are present throughout the process, as required for AM mechanism. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The block glycopolymer, poly(2‐(α‐d ‐mannopyranosyloxy)ethyl methacrylate)‐b‐poly(l ‐lactide) (PManEMA‐b‐PLLA), was synthesized via a coupling approach. PLLA having an ethynyl group was successfully synthesized via ring‐opening polymerization using 2‐propyn‐1‐ol as an initiator. The ethynyl functionality of the resulting polymer was confirmed by MALDI‐TOF mass spectroscopy. In contrast, PManEMA having an azide group was prepared via AGET ATRP using 2‐azidopropyl 2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropanoate as an initiator. The azide functionality of the resulting polymer was confirmed by IR spectroscopy. The Cu(I)‐catalyzed 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition between PLLA and PManEMA was performed to afford PManEMA‐b‐PLLA. The block structure was confirmed by 1H NMR spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography. The aggregating properties of the block glycopolymer, PManEMA16kb‐PLLA6.4k (M n,PManEMA = 16,000, M n,PLLA = 6400) was examined by 1H NMR spectroscopy, fluorometry using pyrene, and dynamic light scattering. The block glycopolymer formed complicated aggregates at concentrations above 21 mg·L?1 in water. The d ‐mannose presenting property of the aggregates was also characterized by turbidimetric assay using concanavalin A. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Various half‐titanocene complexes of the ATiCl2Nu type, where A is the pentamethylcyclopentadienyl (Cp*) or indenyl (Ind) group and Nu a nucleophile (ethoxy group or chloride), were used for the polymerization of L ‐lactide, LLA. In the cases where Nu is an ethoxy group, a 5% excess of ATiCl3 was used to accelerate the polymerization reaction. These systems were proven to be very efficient initiators for the ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of LLA in toluene at 130 °C. Kinetic studies revealed that in most cases the polymerization yield was quantitative and the molecular weight increased linearly with time, leading to well‐defined PLLA with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.1). LLA was also polymerized by the in situ formation of the initiating system after mixing IndTiCl3, benzyl alcohol, BzOH, and NEt3. The thermal properties of the produced polymers were examined by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The activation energy of the thermal decomposition was calculated by the Ozawa–Flynn–Wall and Kissinger methods. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2013  相似文献
