Compactness of Hankel operators and analytic discs in the boundary of pseudoconvex domains

Using several complex variables techniques, we investigate the interplay between the geometry of the boundary and compactness of Hankel operators. Let β be a function smooth up to the boundary on a smooth bounded pseudoconvex domain Ω⊂Cn. We show that, if Ω is convex or the Levi form of the boundary of Ω is of rank at least n−2, then compactness of the Hankel operator Hβ implies that β is holomorphic “along” analytic discs in the boundary. Furthermore, when Ω is convex in C² we show that the condition on β is necessary and sufficient for compactness of Hβ.     

Continuity and Schatten-von Neumann p-class membership of Hankel operators with anti-holomorphic symbols on (generalized) Fock spaces

In this paper we investigate Hankel operators with anti-holomorphic symbols ∈L²(C,m|z|), where are general Fock spaces. We will show that is not continuous if the corresponding symbol is not a polynomial . For polynomial symbols we will give necessary and sufficient conditions for continuity and compactness in terms of N and m. For monomials we will give a complete characterization of the Schatten-von Neumann p-class membership for p>0. Namely in case 2k<m the Hankel operators are in the Schatten-von Neumann p-class iff p>2m/(m−2k); and in case 2k?m they are not in the Schatten-von Neumann p-class.

Descriptive properties of families of autohomeomorphisms of the unit interval

Let H⊂C[0,1] stand for the Polish space of all increasing autohomeomorphisms of [0,1]. We show that the family of all strictly singular autohomeomorphisms is -complete. This confirms a suggestion of Graf, Mauldin and Williams. Some related results are also included.     

Generalized Navier-Stokes equations with initial data in local Q-type spaces

In this paper, we establish a link between Leray mollified solutions of the three-dimensional generalized Navier-Stokes equations and mild solutions for initial data in the adherence of the test functions for the norm of . This result applies to the usual incompressible Navier-Stokes equations.     

Short proofs of summation and transformation formulas for basic hypergeometric series

We show that several terminating summation and transformation formulas for basic hypergeometric series can be proved in a straightforward way. Along the same line, new finite forms of Jacobi's triple product identity and Watson's quintuple product identity are also proved.     

Remarks on the formula for γ-interior

The paper presents a formula for the γ-interior of a set under special conditions for , more general than those in the previous paper [Acta Math. Hungar. 80 (1998) 89-93]. There are also some applications.     

On the complexity of the multicut problem in bounded tree-width graphs and digraphs

Given an edge- or vertex-weighted graph or digraph and a list of source-sink pairs, the minimum multicut problem consists in selecting a minimum weight set of edges or vertices whose removal leaves no path from each source to the corresponding sink. This is a classical NP-hard problem, and we show that the edge version becomes tractable in bounded tree-width graphs if the number of source-sink pairs is fixed, but remains NP-hard in directed acyclic graphs and APX-hard in bounded tree-width and bounded degree unweighted digraphs. The vertex version, although tractable in trees, is proved to be NP-hard in unweighted cacti of bounded degree and bounded path-width.     

On the commutator of the Marcinkiewicz integral

boundedness is considered for the commutator of higher-dimensional Marcinkiewicz integral. Some conditions implying the and the boundedness for the commutator of the Marcinkiewicz integral are obtained.     

Growth conditions, compact perturbations and operator subdecomposability, with applications to generalized Cesàro operators

We adapt recent results of Albrecht and Ricker to obtain conditions under which growth constraints on the left resolvent of a Banach space operator are preserved under suitable perturbations. As an application, we establish Bishop's property (β) for certain generalized Cesàro operators on the classical Hardy spaces Hp, 1<p<∞. Our methods also apply to unilateral weighted shifts whose weight sequence converges sufficiently rapidly as well as to perturbations of restrictions of a class of generalized scalar operators.     

Multiple solutions for elliptic problems with asymmetric nonlinearity

Majorization of regular measures and weights with finite and positive critical exponent

For the sets , 1?p<∞, of positive finite Borel measures μ on the real axis with the set of algebraic polynomials P dense in Lp(R,dμ), we establish a majorization principle of their “boundaries,” i.e. for every there exists such that dμ/dν?1. A corresponding principle holds for the sets , p>0, of non-negative upper semi-continuous on R functions (weights) w such that P is dense in the space : For every there exists such that w?ω.     

Multiplicity of characteristics with Lagrangian boundary values on symmetric star-shaped hypersurfaces

In this paper, the multiplicity of Lagrangian orbits on C² smooth compact symmetric star-shaped hypersurfaces with respect to the origin in R2n is studied. These Lagrangian orbits begin from one Lagrangian subspace and end on another. An infinitely many existence result is proved via Z₂-index theory. This is a multiplicity result about the Arnold Chord Conjecture in some sense, and is a generalization of the problem about the multiplicity of Lagrangian orbits beginning from and ending on the same Lagrangian subspace which was considered in the authors' previous paper [F. Guo, C. Liu, Multiplicity of Lagrangian orbits on symmetric star-shaped hypersurfaces, Nonlinear Anal. 69 (4) (2008) 1425-1436].     

The role of directional compactness in the existence and computation of contingent epiderivatives

This paper underlines the role of directional compactness in the scalarization of graphical derivatives of set-valued maps taking values in infinite-dimensional spaces. Two main theorems are given. The first one states the equivalence of contingent epiderivatives and τw-contingent epiderivatives for directionally compact maps. The second main result proves a variational characterization for the contingent epiderivative of stable and directionally compact maps taking values in general image spaces, extending known results in finite-dimensional and reflexive Banach spaces. The hypotheses given are minimal as is shown by means of several examples. Connections of these theorems with other results of the literature are also provided.     

On certain spaces of vector measures of bounded variation

If (Σ,X) is a measurable space and X a Banach space we investigate the X-inheritance of copies of ?_∞ in certain subspaces Δ(Σ,X) of bvca(Σ,X), the Banach space of all X-valued countable additive measures of bounded variation equipped with the variation norm. Among the consequences of our main theorem we get a theorem of J. Mendoza on the X-inheritance of copies of ?_∞ in the Bochner space L₁(μ,X) and other of the author on the X-inheritance of copies of ?_∞ in bvca(Σ,X).     

Boundedness of singular integral operators with variable kernels

Linear operators with compact supports, probability measures and Milyutin maps

The notion of a regular operator with compact supports between function spaces is introduced. On that base we obtain a characterization of absolute extensors for 0-dimensional spaces in terms of regular extension operators having compact supports. Milyutin maps are also considered and it is established that some topological properties, like paracompactness, metrizability and κ-metrizability, are preserved under Milyutin maps.     

Dilation equations and Markov operators

Using the theory of Markov operators, we give a new proof of the known fact saying that for every positive integers N and k>1, and for every nonnegative reals c₀,…,cN satisfying the first sum rule the dilation equation

     

The quantitative difference between countable compactness and compactness

We establish here some inequalities between distances of pointwise bounded subsets H of RX to the space of real-valued continuous functions C(X) that allow us to examine the quantitative difference between (pointwise) countable compactness and compactness of H relative to C(X). We prove, amongst other things, that if X is a countably K-determined space the worst distance of the pointwise closure of H to C(X) is at most 5 times the worst distance of the sets of cluster points of sequences in H to C(X): here distance refers to the metric of uniform convergence in RX. We study the quantitative behavior of sequences in H approximating points in . As a particular case we obtain the results known about angelicity for these Cp(X) spaces obtained by Orihuela. We indeed prove our results for spaces C(X,Z) (hence for Banach-valued functions) and we give examples that show when our estimates are sharp.
