A decoherence-free subspace (DFS) is an important class of quantum-error-correcting (QEC) codes that have been proposed for fault-tolerant quantum computation. The applications of QEC techniques, however, are not limited to quantum-information processing (QIP). Here we demonstrate how QEC codes may be used to improve experimental designs of quantum devices to achieve noise suppression. In particular, neutron interferometry is used as a test bed to show the potential for adding quantum error correction to quantum measurements. We built a five-blade neutron interferometer that incorporates both a standard Mach-Zender configuration and a configuration based on a DFS. Experiments verify that the DFS interferometer is protected against low-frequency mechanical vibrations. We anticipate these improvements will increase the range of applications for matter-wave interferometry.

We show how to realize long-distance quantum communication using a long-lived quantum memory, which is embedded in a decoherence-free subspace (DFS). Neutral atoms were used in the present scheme, whose interactions are catalyzed by single photons or weak coherent light. The generation, purification and swapping of logical entangled states are performed with help of cavity-assisted photon scattering which is robust to random variation in the atom-photon coupling rate.

This Letter presents a two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) approach for constructing a two-logical-qubit decoherence-free subspace (DFS) by using four multiple-quantum coherences of a CH3 spin system as logical qubits. The three protons in this spin system are magnetically equivalent and can only be used as a single qubit in one-dimensional NMR. We have experimentally demonstrated that our DFS can protect against more types of decoherences than those of the one composed of four noisy physical qubits all with different chemical shifts. This idea may provide new insights into extending qubit systems in the sense that it effectively utilizes the magnetically equivalent nuclei.

We propose a scheme to implement quantum computation in decoherence-free subspace with superconducting devices inside a cavity by unconventional geometric manipulation. Universal single-qubit gates in encoded qubit can be achieved with cavity assisted interaction. A measurement-based two-qubit Controlled-Not gate is produced with parity measurements assisted by an auxiliary superconducting device and followed by prescribed single-qubit gates. The measurement of currents on two parallel devices can realize a projective measurement, which is equivalent to the parity measurement on the involved devices.

We propose a new approach to the implementation of quantum gates in which decoherence during the gate operations is strongly reduced. This is achieved by making use of an environment induced quantum Zeno effect that confines the dynamics effectively to a decoherence-free subspace.

We used quantum process tomography to investigate and identify the function of a nonideal two-qubit quantum-state filter subject to various degrees of decoherence. We present a simple decoherence model that explains the experimental results and point out that a beam splitter followed by a postselection process is not, as commonly believed, a singlet-state filter. In the ideal case it is a triplet-state filter.

A scheme is proposed to implement distributed quantum computation in decoherence-free subspaces (DFSs) via adiabatic passage. The logical single-qubit is encoded in two atoms trapped in a single-mode cavity and the cavities are connected by an optical fiber. Our scheme is immune from the decoherence due to dephasing in virtue of encoding scheme and the decoherence due to spontaneous emission from excited states as the system in our scheme evolves along a dark state. Furthermore, the decoherence due to photon decay is greatly suppressed since the fiber mode remains in a vacuum state and the populations of the cavities’ modes being excited can be negligible under certain condition. It is shown that the minimum fidelity of the resultant gate operation for an arbitrary input state could be over 0.97.

We show how realistic cavity-assisted interaction between neutral atoms and coherent optical pulses, and measurement techniques, combined with optical transportation of atoms, allow for a universal set of quantum gates acting on decoherence--free subspace in a deterministic way. The logical qubits are immunized to the dominant source of decoherece-dephasing, while the influences of additional errors are shown by numerical simulations. We analyze the performance and stability of all required operations and emphasize that all techniques are feasible with current experimental technology.

We demonstrate how to perform quantum phase gate with cavity QED system in decoherence-free subspace by using only linear optics elements and photon detectors. The qubits are encoded in the singlet state of the atoms in cavities among spatially separated nodes, and the quantum interference of polarized photons decayed from the optical cavities is used to realized the desired quantum operation among distant nodes. In comparison with previous schemes, the distinct advantage is that the gate fidelity could not only resist collective noises, but also immune from atomic spontaneous emission, cavity decay, and imperfection of the photodetectors. We also discuss the experimental feasibility of our scheme.

We give a brief review on the quantum information processing in decoherence-free subspace (DFS). We show how to realize the initialization of the entangled quantum states, information transfer and teleportation of quantum states, two-qubit Grover search and how to construct the quantum network in DFS, within the cavity QED regime based on a cavity-assisted interaction by single-photon pulses.

We propose a scheme for realizing conventional geometric quantum phase gates in the context of cavity QED. During the operation neither the atomic system nor the cavity mode is excited, which is important in view of decoherence. The scheme does not require detection of photons, so the gate operation is deterministic and the influence of photodetection imperfection is eliminated. Taking advantage of the geometric manipulation, the phase gate is resilient to fluctuations of experimental parameters.

We propose a scheme for implementation of a universal set of quantum logic gates in decoherence-free subspace with atoms trapped in distant cavities connected by optical fibers. The selective dispersive couplings between the ground states and the first-excited states of the atom-cavity-fiber system produce a state-dependent Stark shift, which can be used to implement nonlocal phase gates between two logic qubits. The single-logic-qubit quantum gates are achieved by the local two-atom collision and the Stark shift of a single atom.During all the logic operations, the logic qubits remain in decoherence-free subspace and thus the operation is immune to collective dephasing.

We report the experimental demonstration of a one-way quantum protocol reliably operating in the presence of decoherence. Information is protected by designing an appropriate decoherence-free sub-space for a cluster state resource. We demonstrate our scheme in an all-optical setup, encoding the information into the polarization states of four photons. A measurement-based one-way information-transfer protocol is performed with the photons exposed to severe symmetric phase-damping noise. Remarkable protection of information is accomplished, delivering nearly ideal outcomes.

For a practical quantum computer to operate, it is essential to properly manage decoherence. One important technique for doing this is the use of "decoherence-free subspaces" (DFSs), which have recently been demonstrated. Here we present the first use of DFSs to improve the performance of a quantum algorithm. An optical implementation of the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm can be made insensitive to a particular class of phase noise by encoding information in the appropriate subspaces; we observe a reduction of the error rate from 35% to 7%, essentially its value in the absence of noise.

We experimentally demonstrate optimal entanglement distillation from two forms of two-qubit mixed states under local filtering operations according to the constructive method introduced by [F. Verstraete, Phys. Rev. A 64, 010101(R) (2001)10.1103/PhysRevA.64.010101]. In principle, our setup can be easily applied to distilling entanglement from arbitrary two-qubit partially mixed states. We also test the violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shinmony-Holt inequality for the distilled state from the first form of mixed state to show its "hidden nonlocality."

Rev.

We present a scheme for implementing a three-qubit phase gate via manipulating rf superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) qubits in the decoherence-free subspace with respect to cavity decay. Through appropriate changes of the coupling constants between rf SQUIDs and cavity, the scheme can be realized only in one step. A high fidelity is obtained even in the presence of decoherence.

Quantum controlled teleportation is the transmission of the quantum state under the supervision of a third party. This paper presents the theoretical and experimental results of an arbitrary two-qubit quantum controlled teleportation scheme, in which the sender Alice only needs to perform two Bell state measurements and the receiver Bob can perform an appropriate unitary operation to reconstruct the arbitrary two-qubit states under the control of the supervisor Charlie. The operation process of the scheme is verified on the IBM quantum experience platform, and the accuracy of the transmitted quantum state is further checked by performing quantum state tomography. Meanwhile, a good fidelity is obtained by using the theoretical density matrix and the experimental density matrix. A sequence of photonic states is introduced to analyze the possible intercept-replace-resend, intercept-measure-resend, and entanglement-measure-resend attacks on this scheme. The results proved that our scheme is highly secure.

We report the first experimental realization of an approximate partial transpose for photonic two-qubit systems. The proposed scheme is based on the local operation on single copies of quantum states and classical communication, and therefore can be easily applied for other quantum information tasks within current technologies. Direct detection of entanglement, i.e., without performing quantum state tomography, using the partial transpose operation, is also demonstrated.
