Ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) flame retarded by ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and pentaerythritol (PER) was cross-linked by electron beam irradiation. The effects of vinyl acetate content and electron beam irradiation on the flame retardancy, mechanical and thermal properties of EVA composites were investigated. The volatilized products of EVA/APP/PER composites were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis/infrared spectrometry. As VA content increased, the volatilized products increased in the second decomposition step, but decreased in the third decomposition step. For all samples, the increase of irradiation dose could improve both the gel content and the Limit Oxygen Index (LOI, the minimum oxygen concentration by volume for maintaining the burning of a material) values of irradiated composites. The mechanical and thermal properties of the irradiated EVA composites were also evidently improved at appropriate irradiation dose as compared with those of unirradiated EVA composites, whereas these properties decrease at higher irradiation dose because of the electron beam irradiation-induced oxidative degradation or chain scission.  相似文献

The flammability characteristics and synergistic effect of hydrotalcite with microencapsulated red phosphorus (MRP) in halogen-free flame retardant ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) composite have been studied by cone calorimeter test (CCT), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI) and UL-94 test. The results obtained by comparing the flame retardancy of hydrotalcite with magnesium hydroxide (MH) and aluminium hydroxide (AH) for their EVA composites showed that hydrotalcite has higher flame retardant effect than MH and AH at the same loading level. The CCT tests indicated that the heat release rate (HRR) and mass loss rate (MLR) of EVA composite blended with hydrotalcite greatly decreased compared with those blended with MH and AH. The LOI values of EVA/hydrotalcite composites are 3-4% higher than those of the corresponding MH composites at 40-60 wt% loading levels, and 6% higher than that of the corresponding AH composite at 40 wt% loading level. Moreover, the addition of a given amount of MRP apparently resulted in the increase of LOI value and decrease of the HRR and MLR as well the loading of hydrotalcite in EVA blend while keeping the V-0 rating in UL-94 test. However, the smoke release increased during the combustion of EVA/hydrotalcite blend containing MRP.  相似文献

CaCO3-containing oil sludge (OS) is a by-product from petroleum industry, with great amount of production. Therefore, an effective processing methods for CaCO3-containing OS is urgently needed. Herein, ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) composites based on CaCO3-containing OS and carbon black (CB) were prepared by melt blending method. The combustion behavior and thermal stability of flame-retardant EVA/OS/CB composites were investigated by cone calorimeter test, limiting oxygen index (LOI), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), smoke density test (SDT), and thermogravimetry-Fourier infrared spectrometry. The heat release rate and smoke production rate of the ternary composites containing 3% CB significantly decreased compared with the EVA/OS composites and pure EVA. Moreover, addition of a certain amount of CB could evidently increase LOI values. The morphologies and structures of the residues, revealed by SEM, ascertained that a better carbonaceous protective layer was formed on the ternary composites than the EVA/OS composite. It was obtained from SDT that CB in the material could retard the smoke production with the application of the pilot flame. The EVA/OS/CB composites assumed a higher thermal stability than the EVA/OS composites and pure EVA.

Nanocarbon black (CB) was introduced into ethylene-vinyl acetate/brucite (EM) composites to investigate the synergistic effect of CB and metal hydroxide on improving the flame retardancy of EVA. Flammability properties of the as-prepared EVA composites were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 test and cone calorimetry test. The results indicated that the optimum mass ratio of CB/brucite was 1/54, at which the EVA composites displayed dramatic improvement on thermal stability and flame retardancy. The LOI value was as high as 35.3%, the UL-94 passed the V-0 rating, and the peak heat release rate reduced 79% in comparison with pure EVA. Based on the morphology and structure analysis for residue chars, the flame-retardant mechanism was attributed mainly to the positive synergistic effect of CB and brucite on promoting the formation of better carbon protective layer during combustion.

In this work, Fe‐montmorillonite (Fe‐MMT) is synthesized and used as a synergistic agent in ethylene vinyl acetate/magnesium hydroxide (EVA/MH) flame retardant formulations. The synergistic effect of Fe‐MMT with magnesium hydroxide (MH) as the halogen‐free flame retardant for ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) is studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting the oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94, and cone calorimetry test. Compared with that of Na‐MMT, it indicates that the synergistic effects of Fe‐MMT enhance the LOI value of EVA/MH polymer and improve the thermal stability and reduce the heat release rate (HRR). The structure and morphology of nanocomposites are studied by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The mechanical properties of the EVA composites have also been studied here, indicating that the use of Fe‐MMT reduces the amount of inorganic fillers. MH hence enhances the mechanical properties of the EVA composite while keeping the UL‐94 V‐0 rating. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Synthetic hydromagnesite obtained from an industrial by-product was evaluated as a non-halogenated flame retardant. It was used in combination with aluminium hydroxide (ATH) and compared with commercial flame retardants like magnesium hydroxide (MH) and natural hydromagnesite-huntite (U) in a polyolefin system of low-density polyethylene/poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (LDPE/EVA).The thermal stability and flame behaviour of the halogen free flame retarded composites were studied by thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), epiradiateur and cone calorimeter. It has been shown that synthetic hydromagnesite could be an alternative solution to the use of MH in non-halogenated flame retardant systems in EVA.  相似文献

The photoinitiated crosslinking of halogen‐free flame retarded linear low density polyethylene/poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate) blends (LLDPE/EVA) with the intumescent flame retardant (IFR) of phosphorous‐nitrogen compound (NP) in the presence of photoinitiator and crosslinker and their characterization of related properties have been investigated by gel determination, heat extension test, cone calorimeter test (CCT), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transfer infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mechanical properties measurements, limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94, and water resistance test. The data from the gel content and heat extension rate (HER) show that the LLDPE/EVA/IFR blends filled with NP are readily crosslinked to a gel content of above 75% and the HER values reach about 50% by UV‐irradiation of 5 sec under suitable amount of photoinitiator and crosslinker. The data obtained from the CCT and LOI indicate that photocrosslinking can considerably decrease the heat release rates (HRR) by 10–15%, prolongate the combustion time, and increase two LOI values for the LLDPE/EVA/NP blends UV irradiated for 5 sec. The results from TGA and the dynamic FTIR spectra give the evidence that the photocrosslinked LLDPE/EVA/NP samples show slower thermal degradation rate and higher thermo‐oxidative degradation temperature than the uncrosslinked LLDPE/EVA/NP samples. The morphological structures of charred residues observed by SEM give the positive evidence that the compact charred layers formed from the photocrosslinked LLDPE/EVA/NP samples play an important role in the enhancement of flame retardant and thermal properties. The data from the mechanical tests and water‐resistant measurements show that photocrosslinking can considerably improve the mechanical and water‐resistant properties of LLDPE/EVA/NP samples. The synergistic effects of zinc oxide (ZnO) with layered double hydroxides (LDH) in ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer/LDH (EVA/LDH) composites have been studied using thermal analysis (TG), limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 tests, and cone calorimeter test (CCT). The results from the UL-94 tests show that the ZnO can also act as flame retardant synergistic agents in the EVA/LDH composites. The CCT data indicated that the addition of ZnO in EVA/LDH system can greatly reduce the heat release rate. The TG data show that the ZnO can increase the thermal degradation temperature and the charred residues after burning.  相似文献

The synergistic effects of layered double hydroxide (LDH) with hyperfine magnesium hydroxide (HFMH) in halogen-free flame retardant ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA)/HFMH/LDH nanocomposites have been studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), mechanical properties' tests, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). The XRD results show that the exfoliated EVA/HFMH/LDH can be obtained by controlling the LDH loading. The TEM images give the evidence that the organic-modified LDH (OM-LDH) can act as a disperser and help HFMH particles to disperse homogeneously in the EVA matrix. The TGA data demonstrate that the addition of LDH can raise 5-18 °C thermal degradation temperatures of EVA/HFMH/LDH nanocomposite samples with 5-15 phr OM-LDH compared with that of the control EVA/HFMH sample when 50% weight loss is selected as a point of comparison. The LOI and mechanical tests show that the LDH can act as flame retardant synergist and compatilizer to apparently increase the LOI and elongation at break values of EVA/HFMH/LDH nanocomposites. The DMTA data verify that the Tg value (−10 °C) of the EVA/HFMH/LDH nanocomposite sample with 15 phr LDH is much lower than that (Tg = −2 °C) of the control EVA/HFMH sample without LDH and approximates to the Tg value (−12 °C) of pure EVA, which indicates that the nanocomposites with LDH have more flexibility than that of the EVA/HFMH composites.  相似文献

A novel polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane containing 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO-POSS) has been incorporated into polycarbonate (PC) composites in order to study its effect on mechanical and thermal properties and flame retardancy. The mechanical and thermal properties of the DOPO-POSS/PC composites have been investigated by tensile and flexural testing, DSC, and DMA. Slight enhancements of yield stress, and flexural strength and modulus, and obvious decreases of fracture strength and strain of the DOPO-POSS/PC composites were observed with an increase in DOPO-POSS loading. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the composites were reduced with increasing DOPO-POSS loading. The morphology of the PC composites was evaluated by SEM, which indicated that the DOPO-POSS was dispersed with a particle size of 100-250 nm in the PC matrix. The thermal degradation behaviour and flame retardancies of PC composites with different DOPO-POSS loadings were investigated by TGA, LOI, UL-94 standard, and cone calorimetry. The composite had an LOI value of 30.5 and a UL-94 rating V-0 when the content of DOPO-POSS was 4%.  相似文献

Urea formaldehyde microsphere (UFM) was prepared and used with organic montmorillonite (OMMT) to modify the flame retardant efficiency of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA)/intumescent flame retardant (IFR) composites. The results show that single IFR may modify the flame retardancy of EVA, but its efficiency is not good enough. The EVA composite containing 21 wt% IFR is just classified the UL_94 V2 and has a limiting oxygen index (LOI) 24.7 vol%. Combining UFM with IFR does not improve the flame retardancy of EVA/IFR composites, and blending OMMT with IFR only improves its LOI. Adding 2 wt% UFM, 2 wt% OMMT, and 17 wt% IFR into EVA, it obtains the UL_94 V0 without melt dripping and a LOI 29.0 vol%. Also, the peak heat release rate and total heat release decrease a lot. Good synergistic effects among IFR, UFM, and OMMT improve the char residues and modify the char micromorphology of EVA composites, which provide better protect for the underlying resin.  相似文献

A new biobased flame retardant (MHPA) with remarkable compatibility was synthesized via a facile and low-cost neutralization reaction of magnesium hydroxide (MH) and phytic acid (PA). By blending the prepared MHPA into ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), the fire retardancy, smoke suppression and mechanical properties of the composites were significantly improved. When 50 wt% of MH was added into EVA matrix, the value of limiting oxygen index (LOI) reached 26.1%. Whereas, when 10 wt% MH in the EVA composites (with initial 50 wt% MH) was replaced by MHPA, the resulted EVA composites had a LOI value of 30.8%, indicating high efficiency of addition of MHPA to improve flame retardancy. Moreover, the heat release rate (HRR) and total smoke production (TSP) of the EVA composites reduced by 54.4% and 27.6%, respectively, suggesting that incorporation of MHPA could effectively hinder rapid degradation of EVA composites during burning process. The fire-retardant mechanism may reside in that the MHPA combined with MH can present the excellent carbonization and expansion effects. This study illustrates that the biobased MHPA has a broad application prospect to develop flame-retardant EVA composites.  相似文献

A novel intumescent flame retardant, containing ammonium polyphosphate (APP), and poly(hexamethylene terephthalamide) (PA6T), was prepared for flame retarding polypropylene (PP). The flame retardation of the PP composites was characterized by limiting oxygen index (LOI). The thermal degradation of the composites was investigated by means of thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and TG coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR). The morphology of the char obtained after combustion of the composites was studied by scanning electron microscopy. It has been found the intumescent flame retardant showed good flame retardancy, with the LOI value of the PA6T/APP/PP (5/25/70) system increasing from 17.5 to 32. Meanwhile, the TG and TG-FTIR work indicated that PA6T could be effective as a carbonization agent and there was a synergistic reaction between PA6T and APP, which effectively promoted the char formation of the PP composites. Moreover, it was revealed that uniform and compact intumescent char layer was formed after combustion of the intumescent flame retarded PP composites.  相似文献

The natural basalt fiber (BF) was incorporated into EVA composites with environmental‐friendly nickel alginate‐brucite based flame retardant (NiFR), to further improve the flame‐retardant effect and mechanical properties. The flame retardancy of EVA composites were characterized by LOI, UL 94, and cone test. With 55 wt% loading, 3BF/52NiFR had the highest LOI value of 31.9 vol.% in all fiber reinforced composites and pass UL 94V‐0 ratting. And comparing to 55B composite with untreated brucite, 3BF/52NiFR decreased peak of heat release rate by 47.8%, total heat release by 21.9%, and total smoke production by 35.5% and kept more residue 54.0% during cone test. Moreover, 3BF/52NiFR also enhanced the mechanical properties of composites by better compatibility with EVA matrix. BF/NiFR exert synergistic flame‐retardant effect major in promoting charring effect in condensed phase during combustion. The fire‐resisted and rigid BF into the char layer reinforced the intensity of protective barrier which prolonged the residence time of pyrolysis carbonaceous groups degraded from EVA matrix, resulting in less heat and smoke release.  相似文献

Nano-Mg(OH)2 (nanometre magnesium hydroxide, nano-MH) was successfully introduced into the esterification and polycondensation system by in situ polymerization to obtain PET/magnesium salt composites (PETMS). The thermal properties and flame retardancy of PETMS were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), UL-94 vertical burning and limited oxygen index (LOI) test. The DSC and TGA results show that magnesium salts in the PET matrix have little effect on the thermal properties of PET, but a significant effect on the thermal stabilities of the composites. The results of LOI and UL-94 test show PETMS have higher LOI values (≥25%) and V-0 rating without melt dripping in the UL-94 test, indicating that PETMS have good flame retardancy and anti-dripping property. Moreover, the residues of magnesium salts and composites after TGA test were also studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to better understand the mechanism of flame retardancy, which reveals that magnesium salts accelerate the degradation of PET and catalyze the formation of char. The SEM results show the morphological structures of the char effectively protect the composites’ internal structures and inhibit the heat, smoke transmission and reduce the fuel gases when the fire contacts them.  相似文献

The synergistic effects and mechanism of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) with magnesium hydroxide (MH) in halogen-free flame retardant EVA/MH/MWNT nanocomposites have been studied by cone calorimeter test (CCT), limiting oxygen index (LOI), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), torque test, morphological evolution experiment, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The data obtained from the CCT, LOI, and TGA show that suitable amount of MWNTs has synergistic effects with MH in the EVA/MH/MWNT nanocomposites. The MWNTs can considerably decrease the heat release rates and mass loss rate by about 50-60%, prolongate the combustion time to near two times, and increase the LOI values by 5% when 2 wt% MWNTs substitute for the MH in the EVA/MH/MWNT samples. The TGA data also show that the synergistic effects of MWNTs with MH apparently increase the thermal degradation temperatures and final charred residues of the EVA/MH/MWNT samples. The experimental observations from the torque, morphological evolution tests, and SEM give positive evidences that the synergistic mechanism of MWNTs with MH can be described to: (i) the increase of melt viscosity because of network structure formation of MWNTs in the EVA/MH matrix; (ii) the enhancement of thermo-oxidation stability due to the MWNTs' mechanical strength and integrity of the charred layers in the EVA/MH/MWNT nanocomposites; (iii) the formation of compact charred layers promoted by MWNTs acted as heat barrier and thermal insulation. All the above-mentioned factors efficiently enhance thermal and flame retardant properties and protect the EVA/MH/MWNT nanocomposite materials to be burning.  相似文献

In this work, 12‐tungestocobaltic acid based organic–inorganic hybrid material, [Bmim]6CoW12O40 (CoW) was synthesized and applied as a synergist in polypropylene (PP)/intumescent flame retardant (IFR) composites. The flame retardant properties were investigated by the limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 vertical burning test, thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA), cone calorimeter and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) etc. The results showed that the PP composites with 16 wt% IFR and 1 wt% CoW achieves the UL‐94 V‐0 rating and gets a LOI value 28.0. However, only add no less than 25 wt% single IFR, can the PP composites obtain the UL‐94 V‐0 rating, which suggests that CoW has good synergistic effects on flame retardancy of PP/IFR composites. In addition, the SEM and cone calorimeter tests indicated the CoW improves the quality of char layer. The rate of char formation has been enhanced also because of the existence of CoW. It is the combination of a better char quality and a high rate of char formation promoted by CoW that results in the excellent flame retardancy of PP/IFR composites. Aluminum salts of phosphinic acid mixture of diisobutylphosphinic acid and monoisobutylphosphinic acid (HPA-2TBA-Al) and glass fibres were compounded with polyamide 6 to prepare a series of flame retardant GF/PA6 composites via melt blending. The flame retardance and burning behaviors of the composites were investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test (UL-94), and Cone calorimeter test. The thermal properties and decomposition kinetics were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) under N2 atmosphere. Addition of HPA-2TBA-Al results in an increased LOI value, a UL-94 V-0 rating together with a decrease in both the values of PHRR and THR in Cone calorimetric analysis. Visual observations and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) after flame retardant tests confirmed the char-formation which acts as a fire barrier in condense phase. Analysis of cone calorimeter data indicates that gas phase flame retardant mechanism exists in the GFPA6/HPA-2TBA-Al system.  相似文献

The flammability characteristics and flame retardant mechanism of phosphate-intercalated hydrotalcite (MgAl-PO4) in the halogen-free flame retardant ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) blends have been studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transfer infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, cone calorimeter test (CCT), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI) and UL-94 tests. The results show that the hydrotalcite MgAl-PO4 intercalated by phosphate possesses the enhanced thermal stability and flame retardant properties compared with ordinary carbonate-intercalated hydrotalcite MgAl-CO3 in the EVA blends. The CCT tests indicate that the heat release rate (HRR) and mass loss rate (MLR) values of the EVA/MgAl-PO4 samples are much lower than those of the EVA/MgAl-CO3 samples. The TGA data show that the thermal degradation rates of MgAl-PO4 and EVA/MgAl-PO4 samples are much slower and leave more charred residues than those of MgAl-CO3 and its corresponding EVA blends. The LOI values of EVA/MgAl-PO4 samples are 2% higher than those of the corresponding EVA/MgAl-CO3 samples at the range of 40–60 wt% loadings, while the EVA sample with 55 wt% MgAl-PO4 can reach the UL-94 V-1 rating. The dynamic FTIR spectra reveal that the flame retardant mechanism of MgAl-PO4 can be ascribed to its catalysis degradation of the EVA resin, which promotes the formation of charred layers with the P–O–P and P–O–C complexes in the condensed phase. The SEM observations give further evidence of this mechanism that the compact charred layers formed from the EVA/MgAl-PO4 sample effectively protect the underlying polymer from burning.  相似文献

As‐received sepiolite/epoxy systems and Fe3O4‐doped sepiolite/epoxy systems were prepared, and the contents of sepiolite and Fe3O4‐doped sepiolite were kept as 2 and 4 wt%, respectively. Compared with sepiolite, the effect of Fe3O4‐doped sepiolite on the flame retardancy, combustion properties, thermal degradation, thermal degradation kinetics and thermomechanical properties of epoxy resin was investigated systematically by limiting oxygen index (LOI), cone calorimeter (Cone), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Some interesting results had been acquired. The addition of sepiolite decreased heat release rate, total smoke production and smoke production rate, and obviously improved LOI values of epoxy composites. Compared with sepiolite, the addition of Fe3O4‐doped sepiolite further reduced parameters mentioned above of epoxy composites, and further enhanced LOI values and char residues after cone test. There might be a synergistic effect between sepiolite and Fe3O4 on flame retardant epoxy composite. TGA results indicated that the addition of sepiolite had a slight effect on the thermal degradation of epoxy composites; however, the addition of Fe3O4‐doped sepiolite accelerated the thermal degradation of epoxy composites. DMA results showed that the addition of both sepiolite and Fe3O4‐doped sepiolite increased the glass transition temperature (Tg) of epoxy composite. The results obtained in this paper supplied an effective solution for developing excellent flame retardant properties of polymeric materials. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
