Effects of gamma-ray irradiation on high density (HDPE) and low density (LDPE) polyethylenes were measured by positron annihilation at temperatures between 100 and 420 K. The effect of the irradiation on the intensity I3 and the lifetime τ3 of the longest lived component was significant below the glass transition temperature Tg, while they were little affected above Tg. For LDPE a marked minimum was observed in the I3 vs T curve. The lower edge of the minimum, corresponding to glass II and glass I transitions, was found to shift to lower temperatures by the irradiation. In HDPE both I3 and τ3 decreased on irradiation mainly due to radiation induced free radicals. The gel fraction of HDPE was small when irradiated below Tm, while it rose sharply on irradiation near Tm. Positron lifetime parameters of this highly crosslinked HDPE showed a distinct difference compared to HDPE irradiated below Tm. Usefulness of the positron annihilation method is discussed in conjunction with studying micro-structure of polymers.  相似文献

The aim of this article was to show the effects of the electron radiation dose and presence of a compatibiliser on the peak melting temperature (Tpm) of the crystalline phase, crystallinity (Xc), and melt flow rate (MFR) of granulated blends of low-density polyethylene (LDPE), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as well as of blends of LDPE, HDPE, and PP. The purpose of applying the high-energy electron radiation with doses up to 300 kGy and of adding a compatibiliser was to enhance mechanical properties of the studied blends and, at the same time, to investigate the possibility of using this technique in the processes of recycling polymeric materials. As the compatibilisers, the styrene–ethylene/butylene–styrene elastomer grafted with maleic anhydride (SEBS-g-MA) and trimethylol propane trimethacrylate (TMPTA) were utilised; they were added at the amounts of 5, 10, and 15 wt% and 1, 2, and 3 wt%, respectively. The enhancement of mechanical properties was accompanied by the following effects, discussed in this article: (i) a decrease in the peak melting temperature upon the electron radiation for the crystalline phase of LDPE, HDPE, and PP that constituted the studied granulated blends and (ii) changes in MFR upon both the electron radiation and the addition of compatibilisers.  相似文献

The radiation-induced oxidative degradation of polyethylenes (PEs) with different degrees of crystallinity was characterized after electron-beam irradiation and during storage at room temperature.UHMWPE, HDPE, LDPE, LLDPE and an ethylene-octene copolymer (Engage) were e-beam irradiated to 30 or 60 kGy in vacuum or in air and stored at room temperature in air. EPR spectroscopy was used to investigate macro-radicals produced during irradiation and their post-irradiation changes. FTIR spectroscopy was used to monitor changes in the polymer structure, induced by irradiation, and to follow post-irradiation oxidation. We found that the crystallinity and the size of the crystalline lamellae, in particular, play a major role on the post-irradiation effects. The low-crystallinity polyethylenes showed no oxidation or oxidation only to a small extent, even when irradiated and stored in air. On the contrary, development of post-irradiation oxidation was observed in HDPE and UHMWPE. We attribute these results to a different reactivity of the macro-alkyl radicals formed upon irradiation in the amorphous or in the crystalline phase. While the radicals formed in the amorphous phase decay in short time, the migration time of the radicals trapped in the crystalline phase to the amorphous one is a key factor, governing the oxidation process.  相似文献

The non-isothermal crystallization and melting of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) were observed by means of differential scanning calorimetry and compared with those of ordinary high-density polyethylene (HDPE). The crystallization temperature (T c ) and melting point (T m ) of UHMWPE were found to be higher thanT c andT m of HDPE, and the latent heat of crystallization (δH c ) and fusion (δH m ) of UHMWPE are smaller thanδH c andδH m of HDPE. The results were explained in terms of the theory of polymer crystallization and the structure characteristics of UHMWPE. The relationships between the parameters (T c ,T T ,δH c andδH m ) and the molecular weight (M) of UHMWPE are discussed. Processing of the experimental data led to the establishment of four expressions describing the above relationships.  相似文献

Radiation is currently being exploited to modify polyethylene in order to improve properties for various applications such as hip replacements. This paper thoroughly examines the effects of high energy electron beam irradiation (10 MeV) on low density polyethylene (LDPE) material. ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) testing specimens were manufactured from LDPE and subjected to a broad range of doses ranging between 25 and 400 kGy at room temperature in an air atmosphere. Extensive characterisation techniques such as modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC) and the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were conducted on the non-irradiated and irradiated samples. While considering the semicrystalline nature of LDPE during the MDSC experiment, the melting temperature (Tm) and the temperature crystallinity (Tc) were calculated. This revealed that the Tm and the Tc decreased in temperature as the irradiation dose increased. The FTIR analysis was implemented to evaluate the presence of polar species such as carbonyl groups and trans-vinylene double bond groups. The IR spectra illustrated that the concentration of characteristic bands for trans-vinylene bonds increased with increasing radiation dose indicating the formation of carbonyl bond groups. Furthermore, the results demonstrated an occurrence of oxidative degradation due to the formation of carbonyl groups at 1718 cm?1.  相似文献

We measured the relaxation times of radicals in saccharides upon γ-irradiation by means of X-band pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. We found that the field-swept signal of irradiated fructose by pulsed EPR showed three to four peaks depending on the dose. The relaxation times (T1 and T2) of the side peaks were longer than those of the main peak(s) from each irradiation, indicating that the radicals showing side peaks interact less with the surrounding environment. From relaxation time measurements of several irradiated saccharides, we conclude that T2 relaxation times decrease with the increasing irradiation dose. In contrast, T1 relaxation times show no correlation with the irradiation dose.  相似文献

Nonisothermal crystallization kinetics and melting behavior of bimodal-medium-density- polyethylene (BMDPE) and the blends of BMDPE/LDPE were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) at various scanning rates. The Avrami analysis modified by Jeziorny and a method developed by Mo were employed to describe the nonisothermal crystallization process of BMDPE. The BMDPE DSC data were analyzed by the theory of Ozawa. Kinetic parameters such as the Avrami exponent (n), the kinetic crystallization rate constant (Zc), the peak temperatures (Tp) and the half-time of crystallization (t1/2) etc. were determined at various scanning rates. The appearance of double melting peaks and the double crystallization peaks in the heating and cooling DSC curves of BMDPE/LDPE blends indicated that the BMDPE and LDPE could crystallize respectively.

Gamma-ray irradiation is a very useful tool to improve the physicochemical properties of various biodegradable polymers without the use of a heating and crosslinking agent. The purpose of this study was to investigate the degradation behavior of poly (l-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) depending on the applied gamma-ray irradiation doses. PLGA films prepared through a solvent casting method were irradiated with gamma radiation at various irradiation doses. The irradiation was performed using 60Co gamma-ray doses of 25–500 kGy at a dose rate of 10 kGy/h.The degradation of irradiated films was observed through the main chain scission. Exposure to gamma radiation dropped the average molecular weight (Mn and Mw), and weakened the mechanical strength. Thermograms of irradiated film show various changes of thermal properties in accordance with gamma-ray irradiation doses. Gamma-ray irradiation changes the morphology of the surface, and improves the wettability. In conclusion, gamma-ray irradiation will be a useful tool to control the rate of hydrolytic degradation of these PLGA films.  相似文献

Extensive thermal and relaxational behavior in the blends of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) (1-octene comonomer) with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) have been investigated to elucidate miscibility and molecular relaxations in the crystalline and amorphous phases by using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and a dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMTA). In the LLDPE/LDPE blends, two distinct endotherms during melting and crystallization by DSC were observed supporting the belief that LLDPE and LDPE exclude one another during crystallization. However, the dynamic mechanical β and γ relaxations of the blends indicate that the two constituents are miscible in the amorphous phase, while LLDPE dominates α relaxation. In the LLDPE/HDPE system, there was a single composition-dependent peak during melting and crystallization, and the heat of fusion varied linearly with composition supporting the incorporation of HDPE into the LLDPE crystals. The dynamic mechanical α, β, and γ relaxations of the blends display an intermediate behavior that indicates miscibility in both the crystalline and amorphous phases. In the LDPE/HDPE blend, the melting or crystallization peaks of LDPE were strongly influenced by HDPE. The behavior of the α relaxation was dominated by HDPE, while those of β and γ relaxations were intermediate of the constituents, which were similar to those of the LLDPE/HDPE blends. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. ESR spectra of the trapped radicals in an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) fiber irradiated by gamma rays showed well-resolved hyperfine splitting at room temperature since the c-axis of the crystallites is aligned with the fiber direction and the radicals are trapped in crystallites. The alkyl radical (?CH2??CH?CH2?) was the major product after irradiation in vacuum and in air at room temperature. Some of the alkyl radicals converted to allyl radicals (?CH2??CH?CH=CH?) and polyenyl radicals (?CH2??CH?(CH=CH)n?CH2?) during storage in vacuum. Upon storage in air atmosphere, the alkyl radicals decayed by reaction with oxygen. Of particular interest is the very slow decay rate of the alkyl radical trapped in UHMW-PE fiber, the half-life is 26 days in vacuum, and 13 days in air at room temperature, which is about 1/30 and 1/100 of that reported for high density polyethylene (HDPE), respectively. The extremely long lifetime of the alkyl radical is supposed to be caused by the large size of crystallites in UHMW-PE fiber. The rate of radical decay was accelerated by annealing at elevated temperature.  相似文献

The mechanical and physical properties of blends based essentially on nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and different ratios of high density polyethylene (HDPE) up to 25 parts per hundred part of rubber (phr) before and after electron beam irradiation were investigated. The values of tensile strength (TS), tensile modulus at 50% elongation (M50), hardness and gel fraction % (GF%) of NBR/HDPE blends were increased with both irradiation dose and by increasing the content of HDPE in the blends. On the other hand, the values of elongation at break (E b ) were decreased with both irradiation dose and the content of HDPE in the blends. By loading NBR/HDPE (100/25) blend with ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer the mechanical and physico-chemical properties were improved. Moreover, the degree of improvement is proportional to the loading content of EVA.  相似文献

Radiation crosslinking is generally used to improve the thermo-mechanical properties of the composites. A study has been carried out to investigate the effect of gamma radiation on the thermo-mechanical properties of linear low density polyethylene containing magnesium hydroxide (MH) and sepiolite (SP) as non-halogenated flame retardant additives. The developed composites are irradiated at different doses upto maximum of 150 kGy. Infrared spectra of the irradiated composites reveal the reduction in the intensity of O-H band with increase in the absorbed doses, thus indicates a distinct structural change in MH at higher doses. The thermogravimetric analysis results of unirradiated and composites irradiated at low doses (≤75 kGy) show two steps weight loss, which is changed to single step at higher doses with lower thermal stability. The melting temperature (Tm) and crystallization temperature (Tc) of irradiated composites are lowered with irradiation whereas Vicat softening temperature (VST) is increased. The increasing trend in gel content with increase in the absorbed dose confirms the presence of crosslinked network. The mechanical properties, results show significant improvement in the modulus of irradiated composites. The results also confirm that MH gradually loses its OH functionality with irradiation.  相似文献

Abstract

Some oxygen‐containing groups such as C?O and C–O were introduced onto high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) chains by an ultraviolet irradiation technique without the addition of any additives, and this method causes no chemical pollution to the environment. This groups content increases with irradiation time. Gelation took place in the HDPE irradiated for 16?hr, and the gel content also increases with irradiation time. After irradiation, the crystal shape and crystalline plane spacing of HDPE remained unchanged; the melting temperature decreased, whereas the crystallinity and hydrophilicity increased. Due to the introduction of polar groups, the interfacial interaction between sericite–tridymite–cristobalite (STC) particles and irradiated HDPE, and the mechanical properties of irradiated HDPE/STC (60/40) blend were improved. Compared with the yield and impact strength of HDPE/STC (60/40) blend, those of the corresponding blend irradiated for 16?hr were increased from 25.1?MPa and 56?J/m to 29.1?MPa and 283?J/m, respectively.  相似文献

The results are given on the effect of γ‐irradiation on properties of blends of high and low‐density polyethylene (HDPE, LDPE) with elastomers ‐ethylene/propylene/diene rubber (EPDM) and chlorinated polyethylene (CPE), and thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP). The morphological, thermal, mechanical properties (including thermosetting properties) and adhesion properties of blended composites were investigated. A special attention was paid to the applicability of the blends as thermosetting materials (TSM). The LCP used was a copolyester of poly(ethylene terephthalate) with p‐(hydroxybenzoic acid) in the ratio 40 : 60. It was found that addition of LCP essentially influenced the thermomechanical and adhesion properties of PE composites, irradiated up to the absorbed dose 150 kGy, as well as the dimensional stability of thermosetting products, made from polyethylene/elastomer mixtures. The results show that such ternary blends considerably improve the exploitation conditions of irradiated polyethylene and useful thermosetting materials can be obtained.  相似文献

The post-irradiation dielectric behaviour of different polyethylenes (PEs) has been studied by means of dielectric loss (tan δ) analysis over the wide temperature (25–325 K) and frequency (1 kHz–1 MHz) ranges. For this reason, low density polyethylene (LDPE), linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) samples were previously gamma irradiated in air to absorbed dose of 300 kGy. The irradiated samples were divided into two groups, and for the first one annealing treatment which can substantially reduce the concentration of free radicals were employed. For the second group, e.g. samples stored in air at room temperature after irradiation, post-irradiation evolution in free radical concentration, dielectric relaxation spectra and carbonyl content was investigated as a function of storage time, up to 90 days. Dielectric relaxation behaviour is related to differences in the initial structures of PEs (such as branching, crystallinity, etc.) and to the radiation-induced effects; carbonyl groups that were introduced by irradiation and/or delayed (post-irradiation) oxidation were regarded as tracer groups. Electron spin resonance (ESR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), infrared (IR) spectroscopy and gel measurements were used to determine the changes in free radical concentration, crystal fraction, oxidation and degree of network formation, respectively.  相似文献

Low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) is the preferred type of polyolefin for many medical and electrical applications because of its superior purity and cleanliness. However, the inferior thermo‐mechanical properties as compared to, for example, high‐density polyethylene (HDPE), which arise because of the lower melting temperature of LDPE, constitute a significant drawback. Here, we demonstrate that the addition of minute amounts of HDPE to a LDPE resin considerably improves the mechanical integrity above the melting temperature of LDPE. A combination of dynamic mechanical analysis and creep experiments reveals that the addition of as little as 1 to 2 wt% HDPE leads to complete form stability above the melting temperature of LDPE. The investigated LDPE/HDPE blend is found to be miscible in the melt, which facilitates the formation of a solid‐state microstructure that features a fine distribution of HDPE‐rich lamellae. The absence of creep above the melting temperature of LDPE is rationalized with the presence of tie chains and trapped entanglements that connect the few remaining crystallites. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Alginate with the weight-average molecular weight (Mw) approximately 900 kDa and ratio of M (mannuronate)/G (guluronate) about 1.3 was irradiated by gamma Co-60 in aqueous solution at doses up to 200 kGy. The irradiation dose was shown to be a function for reducing Mw and molecular weight distribution of irradiated alginates. The distribution of oligomer fractions in irradiated products was also investigated by separation using ultrafiltration membranes. The irradiated alginate with Mw approximately 14.2 kDa was found to have a positive influence for growing of barley and soybean. The irradiated oligoalginate fraction with Mw ranging from 1 to 3 kDa displayed the strongest effect on the growth and development of the mentioned plants at low concentration (20 ppm). It is suggested that oligoalginate with Mw in the range 1–3 kDa is a trigger for the growth and development of plants.  相似文献

The isothermal crystallization kinetics and melting behavior of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) in binary blends with poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) was investigated as a function of PCL molecular mass by differential scanning calorimetry and optical microscopy. The components are miscible in the melt when oligomeric PCL (Mw = 1250) is blended with PBT, whereas only partial miscibility was found in mixtures with higher molecular mass (Mw = 10,000 and 50,000). The equilibrium melting point of PBT in the homopolymer and in blends with PCL was determined through a non-linear extrapolation of the Tm = f(Tc) curve. The PBT spherulitic growth rate and bulk crystallization rate were found to increase with respect to plain PBT in blends with PCL1250 and PCL10000, whereas addition of PCL50000 causes a reduction of PBT solidification rate. The crystallization induction times were determined by differential scanning calorimetry for all the mixtures through a blank subtraction procedure that allows precise estimation of the crystallization kinetics of fast crystallizing polymers. The results have been discussed on the basis of the Hoffman-Lauritzen crystallization theory and considerations on both the transport of chains towards the crystalline growth front and the energy barrier for the formation of critical nuclei in miscible and partially miscible PBT/PCL mixtures are widely debated.  相似文献

Se96Sn4 chalcogenide glass was prepared by melt quenching technique and exposed, at room temperature, to different doses of 4, 8, 12, 24 and 33 kGy of high-energy 60Co gamma irradiation. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) was used under non-isothermal condition to determine the glass transition temperature Tg, onset Tc and peak Tp temperatures of crystallization, of un-irradiated and γ-irradiated samples, at four different heating rates. The variation of Tg with heating rates was utilized to calculate the glass transition activation energy Et for un-irradiated and γ-irradiated glass, using the methods suggested by Kissinger and Moynihan. Based on the obtained values of the characteristic temperatures Tg, Tc and Tp, thermal stability was monitored through the calculation of the S parameter and the crystallization rate factor 〈Kp〉 for irradiated and un-irradiated glass. Results reveal that, as γ-dose increases Tg increases up to 12 kGy then decreases at higher doses but remains more than that of un-irradiated glass. Meanwhile, both Et and 〈Kp〉 attain their minimum values at the same dose of 12 kGy and the glass is thermally stable at this particular dose.  相似文献
