Nylon‐6,6 nanofibers were electrospun at an elongation rate of the order of 1000 s?1 and a cross‐sectional area reduction of the order of 0.33 × 105. The influence of these process peculiarities on the intrinsic structure and mechanical properties of the electrospun nanofibers is studied in the present work. Individual electrospun nanofibers with an average diameter of 550 nm were collected at take‐up velocities of 5 and 20 m/s and subsequently tested to assess their overall stress–strain characteristics; the testing included an evaluation of Young's modulus and the nanofibers' mechanical strength. The results for the as‐spun nanofibers were compared to the stress–strain characteristics of the melt‐extruded microfibers, which underwent postprocessing. For the nanofibers that were collected at 5 m/s the average elongation‐at‐break was 66%, the mechanical strength was 110 MPa, and Young's modulus was 453 MPa, for take‐up velocity of 20 m/s—61%, 150 and 950 MPa, respectively. The nanofibers displayed α‐crystalline phase (with triclinic cell structure). © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 44: 1482–1489, 2006  相似文献

Isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of nylon‐46 were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry. The equilibrium melting enthalpy and the equilibrium melting temperature of nylon‐46 were determined to be 155.58 J/g and 307.10 °C, respectively. The isothermal crystallization process was described by the Avrami equation. The lateral surface free energy and the end surface free energy of nylon‐46 were calculated to be 8.28 and 138.54 erg/cm2, respectively. The work of chain folding was determined to be 7.12 kcal/mol. The activation energies were determined to be 568.25 and 337.80 kJ/mol for isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization, respectively. A convenient method was applied to describe the nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of nylon‐46 by a combination of the Avrami and Ozawa equations. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The monomer concentration for the cationic ring‐opening polymerization of 2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline in N,N‐dimethylacetamide was optimized utilizing high‐throughput experimentation methods. Detailed 1H‐NMR spectroscopic investigations were performed to understand the mechanistic aspects of the observed concentration effects. Finally, the improved polymerization concentration was applied for the synthesis of higher molecular weight (> 10,000 Da) poly(2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline)s. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel star‐shaped poly(p‐dioxanone) was synthesized by the ring‐opening polymerization of p‐dioxanone initiated by pentaerythritol with stannous octoate as a catalyst in bulk. The effect of the molar ratio of the monomer to the initiator on the polymerization was studied. The polymers were characterized with 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The thermal properties of the polymers were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. Glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) functionalized acrylonitrile‐butadiene‐styrene (ABS) copolymers have been prepared via an emulsion polymerization process. The epoxy‐functionalized ABS (e‐ABS) particles were used to toughen nylon‐6. Molau tests and FTIR results showed the reactions between nylon‐6 and e‐ABS have taken place. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) displayed the compatibilization reaction between epoxy groups of e‐ABS and nylon‐6 chain ends (amine or carboxyl groups), which improve disperse morphology of e‐ABS in the nylon‐6 matrix. The presence of only a small amount of GMA (1 wt %) within the e‐ABS copolymer was sufficient to induce a pronounced improvement of the impact strength of nylon‐6 blends; whereas further increase of the GMA contents in e‐ABS resulted in lower impact strength because of the crosslinking reaction between nylon‐6 and e‐ABS, resulting in agglomeration of the ABS particles. SEM results showed shear yielding of the nylon‐6 matrix and cavitation of rubber particles were the major toughening mechanisms. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An exploratory pioneering study on the fabrication of nylon‐6/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites with the aid of water as an intercalating/exfoliating agent via melt compounding in a twin‐screw extruder was conducted. Commercial nylon‐6 pellets and pristine MMT powder were directly fed into the hopper of the extruder. Water was then injected into the extruder downstream. After interactions with the nylon‐6 melt/pristine MMT system, water was removed from the extruder further downstream via a venting gate. As such, no third‐component residual was left within the extrudates. Transmission electron microscopy micrographs showed that pristine MMT was uniformly dispersed in the nylon‐6 matrix. The contact time between water and the nylon‐6/pristine MMT system inside the extruder was so short that nylon‐6 was subjected to very little hydrolysis, if any. The resultant nanocomposites showed higher stiffness, superior tensile strength, and improved thermal stability in comparison with their counterparts obtained without water assistance and the nylon‐6/organic MMT nanocomposites. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of partially melted nylon‐1212 was investigated with differential scanning calorimetry. Because of partial melting, the pre‐existing crystals changed the crystallization mechanism and had a strong effect on the crystallization process. The Avrami exponent and interfacial free energy of the chain‐folded surface of partially melted nylon‐1212 were higher than those of completely melted nylon‐1212. The work of chain folding was determined to be 5.9 kcal/mol. The activation energy of the isothermal crystallization process was determined to be 399.1 kJ/mol, far higher than that of complete melting. The crystallization rate coefficient and Jeziorny analysis indicated that the ability of nonisothermal crystallization for partially melted nylon‐1212 was enhanced. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We successfully formed a series of inclusion complexes (ICs) between an α‐cyclodextrin (α‐CD) host and two kinds of guest polymers, nylon‐6 and nylon‐66. An attempt to achieve an intimate blend between nylon‐6 and nylon‐66 through the formation and dissociation of their common α‐CD IC was made. The formation of all nylon ICs was verified with wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and cross‐polarized/magic‐angle‐spinning 13C NMR spectroscopy. The experimental results demonstrated that α‐CD could only host single nylon polymer chains in the IC channels, either nylon‐6 or nylon‐66 in their own complexes, and presumably either nylon in neighboring channels of their common IC. The IC‐coalesced blend of nylon‐6 and nylon‐66 was obtained after the removal of the host cyclodextrin from their common IC with dimethyl sulfoxide. The spectroscopic results (FTIR and 13C NMR) illustrated that there was a degree of intimate miscibility existing in the IC‐coalesced blend, but not in the solution‐cast physical blend, although X‐ray diffraction patterns showed that the crystal structure of the IC‐coalesced blend was similar to that of the physical blend. DSC thermal profiles suggested that nylon‐66 first formed crystals during coalescence and that the subsequent crystallization of nylon‐6 was greatly affected by the nylon‐66 crystallites because of the close proximity of the two components in portions of the coalesced blend. DSC observations also demonstrated that the melting of the coalesced blend did not lead to complete phase separation of the nylon‐6 and nylon‐66 components. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Carbohydrate‐modified polysiloxanes have been presented several times within the last decade. In this work, a new route to carbohydrate‐segmented polysiloxanes is presented. A series of allyl‐group‐containing bifunctional carbohydrate derivatives was synthesized and reacted with hydrodimethylsilyl‐terminated polysiloxane in hydrosilylation reactions with Speier's catalyst. The carbohydrate monomers and the resulting materials were fully characterized with 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of rod–coil diblock copolymers, consisting of poly{2,5‐bis[(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene} as a rigid segment and poly(n‐butyl acrylate) as a flexible part, were successfully prepared through two inverse procedures by atom transfer radical polymerization. The copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR and gel permeation chromatography and had high molecular weights and relatively narrow polydispersities (polydispersity index < 1.20). All the block copolymers synthesized had two distinct glass‐transition temperatures according to differential scanning calorimetry. A polarizing optical microscopy investigation demonstrated the liquid crystallinity of the diblock copolymers. The self‐assembly behaviors in dilute solutions was studied by transmission electron microscopy. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 5935–5943, 2005  相似文献

alt‐Copoly[1,9‐decaphenylpentasiloxanylene/1,3‐bis(ethylene)tetramethyldisiloxanylene], alt‐copoly[1,9‐decaphenylpentasiloxanylene/1,5‐bis(ethylene)hexamethyltrisiloxanylene], alt‐copoly[1,9‐decaphenylpentasiloxanylene/1,7‐bis(ethylene)octamethyltetrasiloxanylene], and alt‐copoly[1,9‐decaphenylpentasiloxanylene/1,9‐bis(ethylene)decamethylpentasiloxanylene] were synthesized by Pt‐catalyzed hydrosilylation reactions of 1,9 divinyldecaphenylpentasiloxanes with a series of oligodimethylsiloxanes. The molecular weights of these copolymers were determined by gel permeation chromatography. Their glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) were obtained by differential scanning calorimetry. The thermal stabilities of the copolymers were measured by thermogravimetric analysis. The structures of the copolymers were verified by 1H, 13C, and 29Si NMR as well as IR and UV spectroscopy. The copolymers displayed high thermal stabilities and a single Tg, indicating that phase separation between the two short blocks did not occur. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two series of terpolymers, one of o‐/m‐toluidine and aniline with o‐aminobenzoic acid and the other of o‐/m‐toluidine and aniline with m‐aminobenzenesulfonic acid, have been synthesized by oxidative polymerization via an emulsion method with ammonium persulfate as the oxidant and HCl as the external dopant. The terpolymers exhibit excellent solubility and retain the high conductivity (∼1 S cm−1) characteristic of the unsubstituted homopolymer, polyaniline. The terpolymers also possess higher thermal stability than polyaniline. This can be attributed to the presence of internal doping groups and substituents, which introduce flexibility to the otherwise rigid polyaniline backbone. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of poly(trimethylenecarbonate‐ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(p‐dioxanone) copolymers were prepared with varying feed rations by using two step polymerization reactions. Poly(trimethylenecarbonate)(ε‐caprolactone) random copolymer was synthesized with stannous‐2‐ethylhexanoate and followed by adding p‐dioxanone monomer as the other block. The ring opening polymerization was carried out at high temperature and long reaction time to get high molecular weight polymers. The monofilament fibers were obtained using conventional melting spun methods. The copolymers were identified by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The physicochemical properties, such as viscosity, molecular weight, melting point, glass transition temperature, and crystallinity, were studied. The hydrolytic degradation of copolymers was studied in a phosphate buffer solution, pH = 7.2, 37 °C, and a biological absorbable test was performed in rats. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Monofunctional polylactones were prepared by Bu2Sn(OMe)2‐initiated ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone (εCL) followed by acylation with bromoacetylbromide. Telechelic polylactones and polylactides were prepared via ring‐expansion polymerization with 2,2‐dibutyl‐2‐stanna‐1,3‐dioxepane (DSDOP) or 2,2‐dibutyl‐2‐stanna‐pentaoxacyclotridecane (Bu2SnTEG) as cyclic initiator. In situ combination of the polymerization with condensation by means of bromoacetylbromide yielded polylactones having bromoacetate endgroups. These endgroups were subjected to nucleophilic substitution with 3‐mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane (3‐MPTMS). Analogous experiments were conducted with dl‐lactide. The telechelic trimethoxysilyl‐endcapped polylactones were characterized by viscosity, 1H and 13C NMR‐spectroscopy, and MALDI‐TOF mass spectrometry. The mass spectra revealed small amounts of cyclic oligolactones as byproducts in all samples. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 3667–3674, 2005  相似文献

A systematic study of the influence of the α‐olefin size, the catalyst stereospecificity and the reaction temperature was done on the catalytic activity and tacticity of poly‐α‐olefins from 1‐hexene to 1‐octadecene. The metallocenes used were rac‐Et[Ind2]ZrCl2 ( 1 ) and Me2C[Cp(9‐Flu)]ZrCl2 ( 2 ) to obtain isotactic and syndiotactic polyolefins. Some catalysts giving atactic polymers were also used in order to study all the possible 13C NMR pentades. Catalytic activities increased and isotacticity and syndiotacticity decreased with temperature, but no real trend was found with the α‐olefin size. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of new side‐chain cholesteric elastomers derived from cholesteryl 4‐(10‐undecylen‐1‐yloxy)‐4′‐ethoxybenzoate and phenyl 4,4′‐bis(10‐undecylen‐1‐yloxybenzoyloxy‐p‐ethoxybenzoate) was synthesized. The chemical structures of the monomers were confirmed by elemental analyses, Fourier transform infrared, and 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra. The mesomorphic properties of elastomers were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarizing optical microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction measurements. The influence of the content of the crosslinking unit on the phase behavior of the elastomers was examined. Monomer M1 showed a cholesteric phase, and M2 displayed smectic and nematic phases. The elastomers containing <15 mol % of the crosslinking units revealed reversible mesomorphic phase transition, wide mesophase temperature ranges, and high thermal stability. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 4‐Chloro‐3‐methyl phenyl methacrylate (CMPM) and 8‐quinolinyl methacrylate (8‐QMA) were synthesized through the reaction of 4‐chloro‐3‐methyl phenol and 8‐hydroxy quinoline, respectively, with methacryloyl chloride. The homopolymers and copolymers were prepared by free‐radical polymerization with azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator at 70 °C. Copolymers of CMPM and 8‐QMA of different compositions were prepared. The monomers were characterized with IR spectroscopy and 1H NMR techniques. The copolymers were characterized with IR spectroscopy. UV spectroscopy was used to obtain the compositions of the copolymers. The monomer reactivity ratios were calculated with the Fineman–Ross method. The molecular weights and polydispersity values of the copolymers were determined with gel permeation chromatography. The thermal stability of the polymers was evaluated with thermogravimetric analysis under a nitrogen atmosphere. The homopolymers and copolymers were tested for their antimicrobial activity againstbacteria, fungi, and yeast. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A boron‐containing styrenic monomer, 5‐benzyl‐2‐phenyl‐5‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐[1,3,2]‐dioxaborinane, was synthesized to study the influence of boron on the properties of the homopolymer and copolymer with styrene. A similar monomer without boron was also prepared and polymerized so that the properties of its polymer could be compared with the aforementioned boron‐containing polymers. These monomers were characterized by elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared, and 1H and 13C NMR. The thermal degradation of boron‐containing styrenic polymers was studied by means of Fourier transform infrared, which showed the presence of boric acid as char. The flame‐retardant effect was assessed by the measurement of the limiting oxygen indices and char yields during heating in nitrogen and air. The boron‐containing polymers had higher limiting oxygen indices and gave greater yields of char than those without boron. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dihydroxyl capped biodegradable poly(DTC‐b‐PEG‐b‐DTC) (BCB) triblock copolymer and poly(TMC‐b‐DTC‐b‐PEG‐b‐DTC‐b‐TMC) (ABCBA) pentablock copolymer have been synthesized by PEG and BCB copolymer as macroinitiator in the presence of yttrium tris(2,6‐di‐tert‐butyl‐4‐methylphenolate). The copolymers without random segments have been thoroughly characterized by 1H, 13C‐NMR, SEC, and DSC. Molecular weights of the obtained copolymers are dependent on the amount of PEGs and coincide with the theoretical values. The exchange reaction of yttrium alkoxide and hydroxyl end group is essential for controlling the products' molecular weight. Their thermal behaviors are relevant to the chain lengths of PEG and PDTC segments. The Monte Carlo method has been developed to estimate the chain propagation constant and exchange reaction constant. In average, one exchange reaction will occur after approximately six monomer molecules insert into the growing chain. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Effects of ferrite nanoparticles (0.1–20 wt %) on the rheological and other physical properties of nylon‐66 were investigated. The presence of ferrite nanoparticles less than 1 wt % increased the crystallization temperature (Tc) by 4.2 °C with ferrite content, but further addition decreased Tc. The onset temperature of degradation was increased by 7.3 °C at only 0.1 wt % loading of ferrite, after which the thermal stability of nylon‐66 was decreased with ferrite content. The incorporation of ferrite nanoparticles more than 5 wt % increased the dynamic viscosity (η′) with the loading level. Further, it produced notably shear thickening behavior in the low frequency, after which high degree of shear thinning was followed with ferrite content. In the Cole–Cole plot, the nanocomposites with ferrite lower than 5 wt % presented a single master curve, while further addition gave rise to a deviation from the curve. The relaxation time (λ) was increased with ferrite content and the difference of λ between nylon‐66 and its nanocomposite was greater at lower frequency. The tensile strength was a little increased up to 1 wt % loading, after which it was decreased with increasing the loading level. In addition, the introduction of the nanoparticles increased tensile modulus and decreased the ductility with ferrite content. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
