Ethylene/styrene copolymerizations using Cp′TiCl2(O‐2,6‐iPr2C6H3) [Cp′ = Cp* (C5Me5, 1 ), 1,2,4‐Me3C5H2 ( 2 ), tert‐BuC5H4 ( 3 )]‐MAO catalyst systems were explored under various conditions. Complexes 2 and 3 exhibited both high catalytic activities (activity: 504–6810 kg‐polymer/mol‐Ti h) and efficient styrene incorporations at 25, 40°C (ethylene 6 atm), affording relatively high molecular weight poly (ethylene‐co‐styrene)s with unimodal molecular weight distributions as well as with uniform styrene distributions (Mw = 6.12–13.6 × 104, Mw/Mn = 1.50–1.71, styrene 31.7–51.9 mol %). By‐productions of syndiotactic polystyrene (SPS) were observed, when the copolymerizations by 1 – 3 ‐MAO catalyst systems were performed at 55, 70 °C (ethylene 6 atm, SPS 9.0–68.9 wt %); the ratios of the copolymer/SPS were affected by the polymerization temperature, the [styrene]/[ethylene] feed molar ratios in the reaction mixture, and by both the cyclopentadienyl fragment (Cp′) and anionic ancillary donor ligand (L) in Cp′TiCl2(L) (L = Cl, O‐2,6‐iPr2C6H3 or N=CtBu2) employed. Co‐presence of the catalytically‐active species for both the copolymerization and the homopolymerization was thus suggested even in the presence of ethylene; the ratios were influenced by various factors (catalyst precursors, temperature, styrene/ethylene feed molar ratio, etc.). © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Catalytic activity of Me2SiCp*NtBuMX2/(CPh3)(B(C6F5)4) [MTi, XCH3 (1); MZr, X=iBu (2)] systems in the ethylene/styrene (E/S) feed was examined. Experimental data revealed high activity for the catalytic system (1) for copolymerization ethylene with styrene, whereas the system with enhanced catalytic activity for ethylene homopolymerization (2) was temporarily blocked in the styrene presence yielding, even at high styrene content, homopolyethylene as the final product. Properties of thus obtained polymers were analyzed. Catalytic system (1) occurred very sensitive to S/E ratio in the comonomers feed. The 10‐fold acceleration for ethylene consumption was shown in two experimental sets conducted at S/E = 1.3 ratio, 1 bar, and 7.5 bar ethylene pressure, respectively. The consequent enhancement in S/E ratio resulted in slowing down both ethylene consumption and catalyst deactivation rates. Atactic polystyrene was formed at high styrene content with the catalyst (1). Catalytic system (1) allowed design of products with the highest styrene content (20 mol %) at low ethylene pressure, moderate temperature, and high S/E ratio. The apparent activation energy estimated from the initial rates of ethylene consumption was 54.6 kJ/mol. Analysis of apparent reactivity factors (rE = 9 and rS = 0.04; rE × rS = 0.4) and 13C‐NMR copolymer spectra revealed an alternating tendency of the comonomers for active center incorporation. DSC measurements showed considerable decrease of melting points and crystallinity even for copolymers with low styrene content. The catalyst produced relatively high–molecular weight copolymers (140–150 kg/mol) even at 80°C. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 37: 1083–1093, 1999  相似文献

Tandem catalysis offers a promising synthetic route to the production of linear low‐density polyethylene. This article reports the use of homogeneous tandem catalytic systems for the synthesis of ethylene/1‐hexene copolymers from ethylene stock as the sole monomer. The reported catalytic systems employ the tandem action between an ethylene trimerization catalyst, (η5‐C5H4CMe2C6H5)TiCl3 ( 1 )/modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO), and a copolymerization metallocene catalyst, [(η5‐C5Me4)SiMe2(tBuN)]TiCl2 ( 2 )/MMAO or rac‐Me2Si(2‐MeBenz[e]Ind)2ZrCl2 ( 3 )/MMAO. During the reaction, 1 /MMAO in situ generates 1‐hexene with high activity and high selectivity, and simultaneously 2 /MMAO or 3 /MMAO copolymerizes ethylene with the produced 1‐hexene to generate butyl‐branched polyethylene. We have demonstrated that, by the simple manipulation of the catalyst molar ratio and polymerization conditions, a series of branched polyethylenes with melting temperatures of 60–128 °C, crystallinities of 5.4–53%, and hexene percentages of 0.3–14.2 can be efficiently produced. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We investigated the catalytic performance of both bridged unsubstituted [rac‐EtInd2ZrMe2, rac‐Me2SiInd2ZrMe2] and 2‐substituted [rac‐Et(2‐MeInd)2ZrMe2), rac‐Me2Si(2‐MeInd)2ZrMe2] dimethylbisindenylzirconocenes activated with triisobutyl aluminum (TIBA) as a single activator in (a) homopolymerizations of ethylene and propylene, (b) copolymerization of ethylene with propylene and hexene‐1, and (c) copolymerization of propylene with hexene‐1 (at AlTIBA/Zr = 100‐300 mol/mol). Unsubstituted catalysts were inactive in homopolymerizations of ethylene and propylene and copolymerization of propylene with hexene‐1 but exhibited high activity in copolymerizations of ethylene with propylene and hexene‐1. 2‐Substituted zirconocenes activated with TIBA were active in homopolymerizations of ethylene and propylene and exhibited high activity in copolymerization of ethylene with propylene and hexene‐1, and in copolymerization of propylene with hexene‐1. Comparative microstructural analysis of ethylene‐propylene copolymers prepared over rac‐Me2SiInd2ZrMe2 activated with TIBA or Me2NHPhB(C6F5)4 has shown that the copolymers formed upon activation with TIBA are statistical in nature with some tendency to alternation, whereas those with borate activated system show a tendency to formation of comonomer blocks. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article discusses a chemical route to prepare new ethylene/propylene copolymers (EP) containing a terminal reactive group, such as ?‐CH3 and OH. The chemistry involves metallocene‐mediated ethylene/propylene copolymerization in the presence of a consecutive chain transfer agent—a mixture of hydrogen and styrene derivatives carrying a CH3 (p‐MS) or a silane‐protected OH (St‐OSi). The major challenge is to find suitable reaction conditions that can simultaneously carry out effective ethylene/propylene copolymerization and incorporation of the styrenic molecule (St‐f) at the polymer chain end, in other words, altering the St‐f incorporation mode from copolymerization to chain transfer. A systematic study was conducted to examine several metallocene catalyst systems and reaction conditions. Both [(C5Me4)SiMe2N(t‐Bu)]TiCl2 and rac‐Et(Ind)2ZrCl2, under certain H2 pressures, were found to be suitable catalyst systems to perform the combined task. A broad range of St‐f terminated EP copolymers (EP‐t‐p‐MS and EP‐t‐St‐OH), with various compositions and molecular weights, have been prepared with polymer molecular weight inversely proportional to the molar ratio of [St‐f]/[monomer]. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To further extend temperature range of application and low temperature performance of the ethylene‐styrene copolymers, a series of poly(ethylene‐styrene‐propylene) samples with varying monomer compositions and relatively low glass‐transition temperatures (Tg = −28 – 22 °C) were synthesized by Me2Si(Me4Cp)(N‐t‐Bu)TiCl2/MMAO system. Since the 13C NMR spectra of the terpolymers were complex and some new resonances were present, 2D‐1H/13C heteronuclear single quantum coherence and heteronuclear multiple bond correlation experiments were conducted. A complete 13C NMR characterization of these terpolymers was performed qualitatively and quantitatively, including chemical shifts, triad sequence distributions, and monomer average sequence lengths. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The copolymerization of ethylene and styrene can be efficiently carried out by using Cp*TiCl2 (N = Ct Bu2)/MAO (Cp*=η 5‐C5Me5 ) system, yielding the poly(ethylene‐co ‐styrene)s with isolated styrene units. In order to investigate the reasons for formation of the structure, the mechanism of copolymerization, especially the selective insertion of ethylene and styrene, is studied in detail by density functional theory (DFT ) method. At the initiation stage, insertion of ethylene is kinetically more favorable than insertion of styrene, and insertion of styrene kinetically and thermodynamically prefers 2,1‐insertion. That is different from the conventional half‐titanocene system, in which the 1,2‐insertion is favorable. At chain propagation stage, the computational results suggest that the continuous insertion of styrene is hard to occur at room temperature due to the high free energy barriers (28.90 and 35.04 kcal/mol for 1,2‐insertion, and 29.15 and 34.00 kcal/mol for 2,1‐insertion) and thermodynamically unfavorable factors in two different conditions. That is mainly attributed to the steric hindrance between the coming styrene and chain‐end styrene or ketimide ligand. The computational results are in good agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

In this work, ethylene‐1‐hexene copolymers were synthesized with a tandem catalysis system that consisted of a new trimerization catalyst bis(2‐dodecylsulfanyl‐ethyl) amine‐CrCl3/MAO ( 1 /MAO) and copolymerization catalyst Et(Ind)2ZrCl2/MAO ( 2 /MAO) at atmosphere pressure. Catalyst 1 trimerized ethylene with high activity and excellent selectivity in the presence of a relatively low amount of MAO. Catalyst 2 incorporated the 1‐hexene content and produced ethylene‐1‐hexene copolymer from an ethylene‐only stock in the same reactor. Adjusting the Cr/Zr ratio and reaction temperature yielded various branching densities and thus melting temperatures. However, broad DSC curves were observed when low temperatures and/or high Cr/Zr ratios were employed due to an accumulation of 1‐hexene component and composition drifting during the copolymerization. It was found that a short pretrimerization period resulted in more homogeneous materials that gave unimodal DSC curves. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of Me4Cp–amido complexes {[η51‐(Me4C5)SiMe2NR]TiCl2; R = t‐Bu, 1 ; C6H5, 2 ; C6F5, 3 ; SO2Ph, 4 ; or SO2Me, 5 } were prepared and investigated for olefin polymerization in the presence of methylaluminoxane (MAO). X‐ray crystallography of complexes 3 and 4 revealed very long Ti N bonds relative to the bonds of 1 . These complexes were employed for ethylene–styrene copolymerizations, styrene homopolymerizations, and propylene homopolymerizations in the presence of MAO. The productivities of the catalysts derived from 3 – 5 were much lower than the productivity of the catalyst derived from 1 for the propylene polymerizations and ethylene–styrene copolymerizations, whereas the styrene polymerization activities were much higher for the catalysts derived from 3 – 5 than for the catalyst derived from 1 . The polymerization behavior of the catalysts derived from the metallocenes 3 – 5 were more reminiscent of monocyclopentadienyl titanocene Cp′TiX3/MAO catalysts than of CpATiX2/MAO catalysts such as 1 containing alkylamido ligands. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The copolymerization of propylene with 1‐hexene, 1‐octene, 1‐decene, and 1‐dodecene was carried out with silica‐supported rac‐Me2Si(Ind)2ZrCl2 as a catalyst. The copolymerization activities of the homogeneous and supported catalysts and the microstructures of the resulting copolymers were compared. The activity of the supported catalyst was only one‐half to one‐eighth of that of the homogeneous catalyst, depending on the comonomer type. The supported catalyst copolymerized more comonomer into the polymer chain than the homogeneous catalyst at the same monomer feed ratio. Data of reactivity ratios showed that the depression in the activity of propylene instead of an enhancement in the activity of olefinic comonomer was responsible for this phenomenon. We also found that copolymerization with α‐olefins and supporting the metallocene on a carrier improved the stereoregularity and regioregularity of the copolymers. The melting temperature of all the copolymers decreased linearly with growing comonomer content, regardless of the comonomer type and catalyst system. Low mobility of the propagation chain in the supported catalyst was suggested as the reason for the different polymerization behaviors of the supported catalyst with the homogeneous system. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The use of functional groups bearing silica/poly(styrene‐co‐4‐vinylpyridine) core–shell particles as a support for a zirconocene catalyst in ethylene polymerization was studied. Several factors affecting the behavior of the supported catalyst and the properties of the resulting polymer, such as time, temperature, Al/N (molar ratio), and Al/Zr (molar ratio), were examined. The conditions of the supported catalyst preparation were more important than those of the ethylene polymerization. The state of the supported catalyst itself played a decisive role in both the catalytic behavior of the supported catalyst and the properties of polyethylene (PE). IR and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to follow the formation of the supports. The formation of cationic active species is hypothesized, and the performance of the core–shell‐particle‐supported zirconocene catalyst is discussed as well. The bulk density of the PE formed was higher than that of the polymer obtained from homogeneous and polymer‐supported Cp2ZrCl2/methylaluminoxane catalyst systems. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Olefin polymerizations catalyzed by Cp′TiCl2(O‐2,6‐iPr2C6H3) ( 1 – 5 ; Cp′ = cyclopentadienyl group), RuCl2(ethylene)(pybox) { 7 ; pybox = 2,6‐bis[(4S)‐4‐isopropyl‐2‐oxazolin‐2‐yl]pyridine}, and FeCl2(pybox) ( 8 ) were investigated in the presence of a cocatalyst. The Cp*TiCl2(O‐2,6‐iPr2C6H3) ( 5 )–methylaluminoxane (MAO) catalyst exhibited remarkable catalytic activity for both ethylene and 1‐hexene polymerizations, and the effect of the substituents on the cyclopentadienyl group was an important factor for the catalytic activity. A high level of 1‐hexene incorporation and a lower rE · rH value with 5 than with [Me2Si(C5Me4)(NtBu)]TiCl2 ( 6 ) were obtained, despite the rather wide bond angle of Cp Ti O (120.5°) of 5 compared with the bond angle of Cp Ti N of 6 (107.6°). The 7 –MAO catalyst exhibited moderate catalytic activity for ethylene homopolymerization and ethylene/1‐hexene copolymerization, and the resultant copolymer incorporated 1‐hexene. The 8 –MAO catalyst also exhibited activity for ethylene polymerization, and an attempted ethylene/1‐hexene copolymerization gave linear polyethylene. The efficient polymerization of a norbornene macromonomer bearing a ring‐opened poly(norbornene) substituent was accomplished by ringopening metathesis polymerization with the well‐defined Mo(CHCMe2Ph)(N‐2,6‐iPr2C6H3)[OCMe(CF3)2]2 ( 10 ). The key step for the macromonomer synthesis was the exclusive end‐capping of the ring‐opened poly(norbornene) with p‐Me3SiOC6H4CHO, and the use of 10 was effective for this polymerization proceeding with complete conversion. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A density functional theory (B3LYP) computational study of the ethylene–styrene copolymerization process using meso‐Et(H4Ind)2Zr(CH3)2 as the catalyst is presented. The monomer insertion barriers in meso species are evaluated and compared with previously obtained barriers in rac diastereoisomers. Differences related to ethylene homopolymerization and ethylene–styrene copolymerization activities as well as styrene incorporation into the copolymer are found between the meso and rac diastereoisomers. Nevertheless, a migratory insertion mechanism seems to hold for both diastereoisomeric species. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 4752–4761, 2006  相似文献

Two representative bulk polymers, polyolefin (PO) and polystyrene (PS), were molecularly connected to form PO‐block‐PS by sequentially performing coordination and anionic polymerizations in one pot. Ethylene/1‐octene copolymerization was performed using a typical ansa‐metallocene catalyst, rac‐[Me2Si(2‐methylindenyl)]2ZrCl2, in the presence of (benzyl)2zinc to grow PO‐chains at the Zn site. Anionic styrene polymerization was subsequently performed using nBuLi·(tmeda) (tmeda, N,N,N′,N′‐tetramethylethylenediamine) initiator to consecutively grow PS‐chains at the Zn site. The composition and the molecular weight of the PO‐blocks were controllable depending on the feed amounts of 1‐octene and (benzyl)2zinc (1‐octene fraction: ~20, ~40 wt %; PO‐Mw, 77,000–174,000) and the PS‐block size was also controlled (PS‐Mn, ~21,000) with the complete conversion of the styrene monomer. Formation of block copolymers was evident in the GPC curves, TEM images, and strain‐stress curves. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2016 , 54, 3110–3118  相似文献

Novel block–graft copolymers [poly(styrene‐b‐ethylene‐co‐butylene‐b‐styrene)‐g‐poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)] were synthesized by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA) with chloromethylated poly(styrene‐b‐ethylene‐co‐butylene‐b‐styrene) (SEBS) as a macromolecular initiator. The copolymers were composed of triblock SEBS as the backbone and tBA as grafts attached to the polystyrene end blocks. The macromolecular initiator (chloromethylated SEBS) was prepared by successive hydrogenation and chloromethylation of SEBS. The degree of chloromethylation, ranging from 1.6 to 36.5 mol % according to the styrene units in SEBS, was attained with adjustments in the amount of SnCl4 and the reaction time with a slight effect on the monodispersity of the starting material (SEBS). The ATRP mechanism of the copolymerization was supported by the kinetic data and the linear increase in the molecular weights of the products with conversion. The graft density was controlled with changes in the functionality of the chloromethylated SEBS. The average length of the graft chain, ranging from a few repeat units to about two hundred, was adjusted with changes in the reaction time and alterations in the initiator/catalyst/ligand molar ratio. Incomplete initiation was detected at a low conversion; moreover, for initiators with low functionality, sluggish initiation was overcome with suitable reaction conditions. The block–graft copolymers were hydrolyzed into amphiphilic ones containing poly(acrylic acid) grafts. The aggregation behavior of the amphiphilic copolymers was studied with dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy, and the aggregates showed a variety of morphologies. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. With CuBr/tetramethylguanidino‐tris(2‐aminoethyl)amine (TMG3‐TREN) as the catalyst, the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate, n‐butyl acrylate, styrene, and acrylonitrile was conducted. The catalyst concentration of 0.5 equiv with respect to the initiator was enough to prepare well‐defined poly(methyl methacrylate) in bulk from methyl methacrylate monomer. For ATRP of n‐butyl acrylate, the catalyst behaved in a manner similar to that reported for CuBr/tris[2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine. A minimum of 0.05 equiv of the catalyst with respect to the initiator was required to synthesize the homopolymer of the desired molecular weight and low polydispersity at the ambient temperature. In the case of styrene, ATRP with this catalyst occurred only when a 1:1 catalyst/initiator ratio was used in the presence of Cu(0) in ethylene carbonate. The polymerization of acrylonitrile with CuBr/TMG3‐TREN was conducted successfully with a catalyst concentration of 50% with respect to the initiator in ethylene carbonate. End‐group analysis for the determination of the high degree of functionality of the homopolymers synthesized by the new catalyst was determined by NMR spectroscopy. The isotactic parameter calculated for each system indicated that the homopolymers were predominantly syndiotactic, signifying that the tacticity remained the same, as already reported for ATRP. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An efficient introduction of vinyl group into poly (ethylene‐co‐styrene) or poly(ethylene‐co?1‐hexene) has been achieved by the incorporation of 3,3′‐divinylbiphenyl (DVBP) in terpolymerization of ethylene, styrene, or 1‐hexene with DVBP using aryloxo‐modified half‐titanocenes, Cp′TiCl2(O?2,6‐iPr2C6H3) [Cp′ = Cp*, tBuC5H4, 1,2,4‐Me3C5H2], in the presence of MAO cocatalyst, affording high‐molecular‐weight polymers with unimodal distributions. Efficient comonomer incorporations have been achieved by these catalysts, and the content of each comonomer could be varied by its initial concentration charged. The postpolymerization of styrene was initiated from the vinyl group remained in the side chain by treatment with n‐BuLi. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. The copolymerization of styrene and 1,3‐butadiene (Bd) or isoprene (Ip) was carried out with half‐sandwich titanium(IV) Cp′TiCl3 catalysts (where Cp′ is cyclopentadienyl 1 , indenyl 2 , or pentamethylcyclopentadienyl 3 ) with methylaluminoxane as a cocatalyst. For the copolymerization with Bd, catalyst 3 gave the copolymers containing the highest amount of Bd among the catalysts used. The resulting copolymers were composed of a styrene–Bd multiblock sequence. High melting points were observed in the copolymers prepared with catalyst 1 . The structures of hydrogenated poly(styrene‐co‐Bd) were studied by 13C NMR spectroscopy, and the long styrene sequence length was detected in the copolymers prepared with catalyst 1 . For styrene/Ip copolymerization, random copolymers were obtained. Among the used catalysts, catalyst 1 gave the copolymers containing the highest amount of Ip. The copolymers prepared with catalyst 1 showed a steep melting point depression with increasing Ip content because of the high ratio of 1,4‐inserted Ip units and/or the low molecular weights of the copolymers. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article reports a synthetic method for a norbornene–ethylene–styrene (N‐E‐S) terpolymer, which has not been well investigated so far, via incorporation of styrene (S) into vinyl‐type norbornene–ethylene (N‐E) copolymers catalyzed by a substituted ansa‐fluorenylamidodimethyltitanium [Me2Si(3,6‐tBu2Flu)(tBuN)]TiMe2 catalyst ( I ) activated with a [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4]/Al(iBu)3 cocatalyst at room temperature in toluene. The resulting terpolymerization product contained the targeted N‐E‐S terpolymer and the contaminated homopolymers, which were then able to be completely removed by solvent fractionation techniques. While homopolystyrene was easily extracted by fractionation with methylethylketone as a soluble part, homopolyethylene and a trace amount of homopolynorbornene could be perfectly separated by fractionation with chloroform as insoluble parts. The detail characterizations of a chloroform‐soluble polymer with gel permeation chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance, and differential scanning calorimetry analyses proved that it contained a true N‐E‐S terpolymer with long N‐E sequences incorporated with isolated or short styrene sequences. The homogeneity of the morphology together with a single glass transition temperature that proportionally decreased with the increase of the styrene contents indicated that the N‐E‐S terpolymer obtained in this work is a random polymer with an amorphous structure. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The radical ring‐opening copolymerization of 2‐isopropenyl‐3‐phenyloxirane (1) with styrene (St) was examined to obtain the copolymer [copoly(1‐St)] with a vinyl ether moiety in the main chain. The copolymers were obtained in moderate yields by copolymerization in various feed ratios of 1 and St over 120 °C; the number‐average molecular weights (Mn) were estimated to be 1800–4200 by gel permeation chromatography analysis. The ratio of the vinyl ether and St units of copoly(1‐St) was estimated with the 1H NMR spectra and varied from 1/7 to 1/14 according to the initial feed ratio of 1 and St. The haloalkoxylation of copoly(1‐St) with ethylene glycol in the presence of N‐chlorosuccinimide produced a new copolymer with alcohol groups and chlorine atoms in the side group in a high yield. The Mn value of the haloalkoxylated polymer was almost the same as that of the starting copoly(1‐St). The incorporated halogen was determined by elemental analysis. The analytical result indicated that over 88% of the vinyl ether groups participated in the haloalkoxylation. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 3729–3735, 2000  相似文献
