We report on the fabrication of highly efficient fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) in non-photosensitive fibers based on nonlinear absorption of fs laser light. Up to 40 mm long gratings with a transmission of T=-25 dB at the Bragg reflection wavelength were obtained and their coupling constant determined by spectral analysis. Therefore, a phase mask scanning technique with appropriate control of the focus was established. PACS  42.60.-v; 42.62.-b; 42.65.Re; 42.79.Dj; 42.81.-i  相似文献

Using in situ Raman scattering in a confocal microscopy setup, we have observed changes in the network structure of fused silica after modifying regions inside the glass with tightly focused 800-nm 130-fs laser pulses at fluences of 5-200 J cm(-2). The Raman spectra show a large increase in the peaks at 490 and 605cm(-1), owing to 4- and 3-membered ring structures in the silica network, indicating that densification occurs after exposure to the femtosecond laser pulses. The results are consistent with the formation of a localized plasma by the laser pulse and a subsequent microexplosion inside the glass.  相似文献

High power supercontinuum (SC) is generated by focusing 800 nm and 400 nm femtosecond laser pulses in fused silica with a microlens array. It is found that the spectrum of the SC is getting broader compared with the case of a single laser pulse, and the spectral energy density between the two fundamental laser wavelengths is getting significantly higher by optimizing the phase matching angle of the BBO. It exceeds μJ/nm over 490 nm range which is from 380 nm to 870 nm, overcoming the disadvantage of relative lower power in the ranges far from the fundamental wavelength.  相似文献

Herein we present results on the femtosecond laser direct writing and optical characterization studies of two dimensional gratings in fused silica, GE 124, and Foturan glasses. Varieties of structures were achieved with varying input energy and spatial orientation of the samples. Various characterization techniques including fluorescence spectroscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, and laser confocal microscopy were employed to analyze the structural and physical modifications at the focal volume resulting in change of refractive index. Diffraction efficiencies of 9–12% were observed from the grating structures. A broad-band emission was observed in the laser-modified region of the Foturan glass. The obtained results are analyzed in the light of recent work in similar glasses and exploring the applications of such structures in the fields of photonics.  相似文献

For the first time to our knowledge, high-strength (>30 dB) first-order Bragg grating waveguides were fabricated in bulk fused silica glass in a single-scanning step by modulating a high-repetition-rate femtosecond fiber laser with an external acousto-optic modulator. The modulation induced a waveguide segmentation by delivering controlled bursts of laser pulses to define an array of partially overlapped refractive index voxels. With appropriate choice of modulation frequency and sample scanning speed, low loss waveguides could be formed at high writing speeds to yield sharp Bragg spectral resonances tunable over the 1300 to 1550 nm telecom band. Effects of acousto-optic modulation duty cycle on propagation loss and grating strength are characterized. This modulation method offers facile control and integration of multiwavelength Bragg grating devices to enhance overall functionality of optical circuits in three-dimensional geometries.  相似文献

Atomic-scale structural changes have been observed in the glass network of fused silica after modification by tightly focused 800-nm, 130-fs laser pulses at fluences between 5 and 200 J cm-2. Raman spectroscopy of the modified glass shows an increase in the 490 and 605-cm-1 peaks, indicating an increase in the number of 4- and 3-membered ring structures in the silica network. These results provide evidence that densification of the glass occurs after exposure to fs pulses. Fluorescence spectroscopy of the modified glass shows a broad fluorescence band at 630 nm, indicating the formation of non-bridging oxygen hole centers (NBOHC) by fs pulses. Waveguides that support the fundamental mode at 633 nm have been fabricated inside fused silica by scanning the glass along the fs laser beam axis. The index changes are estimated to be approximately 0.07×10-3. Received: 17 December 2001 / Accepted: 9 July 2002 / Published online: 25 October 2002 RID="*" ID="*"Corresponding author. The competition between optical breakdown (OB) and laser-pulse filamentation (FL) in bulk fused silica is investigated by using a 1-kHz femtosecond infrared laser. We measure input powers corresponding to the threshold of OB and FL in terms of external focusing conditions. The results demonstrate that OB precedes FL for tight focusing, whereas for sufficiently long focal lengths FL takes places at a lower power than OB does.  相似文献

We report a new approach to the microfabrication of permanent optical waveguide arrays inside fused silica induced by focusing infrared femtosecond laser pulses with microjoule energy. These arrays consist of waveguides limited by void-like damage zones with very loose coupling among adjacent guides, thus allowing the excitation of a single one. The proposed method shows the possibility of using created void-like structures for both the fabrication of integrated optical devices as well as for the control of previously induced refractive index change regions. The features of the local nondestructive modifications of the bulk fused silica are experimentally studied. A method for the measurement of the refractive index in a transparent sample irradiated with femtosecond laser pulses is developed. The accuracy of the refractive-index measurements achieves about 10?5, and a spatial resolution is several microns. The quantitative data on the dynamics of the permanent modification of glass as a function of the radiation energy are obtained for the first time. The spatial localization of the modified area that is predominantly determined by the laser-beam divergence is analyzed. The femtosecond interferometry is used to investigate the laser-pulse propagation in amorphous silica.  相似文献

Three-dimensional bitwise optical recording with a density of 500 Gb/cm3 in fused silica using a Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser modulated by binary digits is demonstrated. Laser pulses modulation is realized by modulating two circuits of trigger pulses signal which are used to control laser pulses trapping and switching out from cavity, respectively. Bits are optically readout in both a parallel reading (phase-contrast) and a serial reading (confocal-type) methods. The method for modulating laser pulses can also be used in all of pulsed laser systems which operate in cavity-dumping configuration.  相似文献

A deep ultraviolet femtosecond laser operating at wavelength 258 nm was demonstrated to be effective in trimming fiber Bragg gratings in telecommunication fibers. A smooth tunable resonance wavelength shift of up to 0.52 nm has been observed, corresponding to a refractive index change of ∼5 × 10−4 after an accumulated laser fluence of 63.3 kJ/cm2 at a single pulse fluence of 124 mJ/cm2. The ultrafast laser enhancement of ultraviolet photosensitivity response and modification of anisotropic index profile in silica fiber is a powerful technique to precise control of the performance of fiber Bragg grating devices for applications in optical filtering and polarization mode dispersion management.  相似文献

Results of our investigations on direct laser fabrication of blaze gratings in fused silica using a special fluorine-laser mask projection technology allowing to produce plane and smooth reflecting areas and optimum blaze geometry will be presented. In particular, it will be shown that gratings with nearly optimum blaze geometry and relatively low surface roughness of the reflecting areas can be produced. The technique is a one-step method and has a high variability with regard to grating geometry and also substrate materials. We use masks made of tantalum foil, projected onto a fused silica substrate surface with a demagnification ratio of 26:1 and also novel scattering masks made of calcium fluoride. In these masks, up to 25 times smaller transmission apertures can be manufactured allowing thus grating constants in the range of a few μm. The average surface roughness of the reflecting areas along a blaze grating line was measured to be R a=38 nm without any surface smoothing. The maximum variance of the blaze angle within one grating is about 0.5 degree.  相似文献

Fiber Bragg gratings were written in thulium-doped and undoped single-mode ZBLAN fibers by focusing femtosecond laser pulses on the fiber core through a phase mask. Maximum index modulation of the order of 1 x 10(-3) was induced in both types of fibers. Measurements of the transverse refractive index changes across the core and cladding regions indicate that the grating formation originates from a negative index change.  相似文献
