The relationship between the critical shear stress for the onset of flow instabilities and the work of adhesion at the interface has been evaluated experimentally for a series of polyolefins on several steels, brasses, and coated steels. The critical shear stress was considerably affected by the chemical nature of the die. Low-surface-energy materials were found to produce smooth extrudates presumably by inducing slippage at the wall. Steel, tungsten carbide, and brass surfaces promoted sharkskin defect at shear stresses above the first critical shear stress. A linear relationship between the critical shear stress and the work of adhesion was found to be valid for values of work of adhesion smaller than approximately 30 mN/m. This indicates that slippage occurs due to a breakdown of the adhesion at the interface. For values of work of adhesion greater than approximately 30 mN/m a stronger interaction at the interface may induce a cohesive failure at the interface and subsequently, extrudate distortions.

An asymptotic formula is obtained for the total-energy increment during quasistatic growth of a semiin finite crack in an anisotropic elastic plane under complex loading. It is assumed that the shear loads are much larger than the tearing loads. The shape of the slightly curved crack was determined using the Griffith criterion in two versions: global and local. It is shown, in particular, that the first version leads to an improbable result. __________ Translated from Prikladnaya Mekhanika i Tekhnicheskaya Fizika, Vol. 47, No. 5, pp. 119–130, September–October, 2006.  相似文献

A new family of propylene-ethylene copolymers developed by The Dow Chemical Company has narrow molecular weight distributions for industrial polymers and broad chemical composition distributions. This molecular architecture makes possible high filler loadings while maintaining good processability. To provide a fundamental understanding of the lower than expected viscosity, a study of the shear rheological behavior of two series of composites was performed. The composites consist of stearate-coated calcium carbonate particles suspended in a propylene-ethylene copolymer. The matrix in one series was a new copolymer, and in the other series, it was a traditional metallocene copolymer. For both systems, the viscosity increases dramatically with increasing filler loading; however, the viscosity is lower in the case of the composites of the new copolymer. The stearate coating on the calcium carbonate particles decreases the adhesion of the polymer to the filler surface, allowing particle-matrix interfacial slip. A high temperature atomic force microscopy study has indicated the existence of ethylene-enriched zones in the matrix immediately surrounding the particles in the new copolymer. We hypothesize that these high ethylene content chains around the particle surface enhance particle-matrix interfacial slip resulting in the lower composite viscosity.  相似文献

Boger fluids are dilute polymer solutions exhibiting high elasticity at low apparent shear rates, which leads to high extrudate swell. Numerical simulations have been undertaken for the flow of three Boger fluids (including benchmark Fluid M1), obeying an integral constitutive equation of the K-BKZ type, capable of describing the behavior of dilute polymer solutions. Their rheology is well captured by the integral model. The flow simulations are performed for planar and axisymmetric geometries without or with gravity. The results provide the extrudate swell and the excess pressure losses (exit correction), as well as the shape and extent of the free surface. All these quantities increase rapidly and monotonically with increasing elasticity level measured by the stress ratio, SR. It was found that the main reason for the high extrudate swelling is high normal stresses exhibited in shear flow (namely, the first normal-stress difference, N1). Surprisingly, the elongational parameter of the model or a second normal-stress difference N2 do not affect the results appreciably. Gravity serves to lower the swelling considerably, and makes the simulations easier and in overall agreement with previous experiments.

The sharkskin surface instability is commonly observed in the extrusion of polymer melts. We present a series of experiments in which a specifically designed rectangular slit die with insulated and independently heated sides and is used to induce precise temperature gradients across a flowing polyethylene melt. Our previous experiments demonstrated that the character of the surface distortions produced by the sharkskin instability was a function of the die wall temperature and therefore the extrudate had viscoelastic properties at the surface. In this paper, we explore the role of temperature and viscoelastic property gradients near the capillary wall. The amplitude of the sharkskin instability is quantified and plotted against apparent shear and extension rates. Analysis of the data demonstrates that the amplitude and frequency of the instability is independent of bulk temperature and temperature gradient and is dependent only on wall temperature. The data are normalized using a dimensionless Weissenberg number based on the extension rate to collapse the data collected over all temperatures and gradients onto a single master curve. We conclude with an example of a rectangular extrudate exhibiting varying surface roughness due to differential die heating and discuss the implications of our observations on the sharkskin surface instability mechanism and on commercial applications.  相似文献

The influence of extrusion under strong slip conditions on the extensional properties of linear low-density polyethylene was studied in this work. The material was extruded at two different temperatures under strong slip and no slip conditions, and was subsequently subjected to uniaxial elongational flow by means of a Rheotens device. Strong slip was evident through the elimination of sharkskin distortions and the stick-slip instability, as well as by the electrification of the extrudates. The extrudate swell was smaller in the presence of slip when comparing with no slip conditions at constant apparent shear rate, but it was found to be a unique function of the shear stress if comparison was performed at constant stress. The draw ratio and melt strength of the filaments obtained under slip conditions were larger compared to those without slip. In addition, draw resonance was postponed to higher draw ratios during the extrusion with strong slip at constant apparent shear rate. It is suggested that slip of the polymer at the die wall decreases the shear stress in the bulk, and therefore, restricts the disentanglement and orientation of macromolecules during flow, which subsequently produces the increase in draw ratio and melt strength during stretching.  相似文献

A new test method is developed for studying mixed-mode interfacial failure of thin films using laser generated stress waves. Guided by recent parametric studies of laser-induced tensile spallation, we successfully extend this technique to achieve mixed-mode loading conditions. By allowing an initial longitudinal wave to mode convert at an oblique surface, a high amplitude shear wave is generated in a fused silica substrate and propagated toward the thin-film surface. A shear wave is obtained with amplitude large enough to fail an Al film/fused silica interface and the corresponding shear stress calculated from high-speed interferometric displacement measurements. Examination of the interfaces failed under mixed-mode conditions reveals significant wrinkling and tearing of the film, in great contrast to blister patterns observed in similar Al films failed under tensile loading.  相似文献

Long glass fiber-filled polypropylene (PP) composites are produced by pultrusion, and the extrudate is cut at different lengths producing composites containing long fibers of controlled length. The rheological properties of such composites in the molten state have been studied using different rheometers. A capillary rheometer has been constructed and mounted on a molding-injection machine. The shear viscosity of filled PP determined from the capillary rheometer, after corrections for entrance effects, was found to be very close to that of unfilled PP. However, large excess pressure losses at the capillary entrance were observed and these data have been used to obtain an apparent elongational viscosity. The apparent elongational viscosity was shown to be considerably larger than the shear viscosity for PP and filled PP, and it increased markedly with fiber length and fiber content. Rotational rheometers with a parallel-plate geometry were used to investigate the viscoelastic properties of these composites and their behavior was found to be non-linear, exhibiting a yield stress. A model is proposed to describe the shear viscosity from a solid-like behavior at low stresses to fluid-like behavior at high shear stresses taking into account fiber content and orientation. A modified model, proposed for elongational flow, describes relatively well the apparent elongational data.  相似文献

This study investigates the use of both the amplitude and time-of-flight based pulsed ultrasonic polar scan (P-UPS) for the nondestructive detection and evaluation of fatigue damage in fabric reinforced composites. Several thermoplastic carbon fabric reinforced PPS specimens (CETEX), loaded under various fatigue conditions, have been scanned at multiple material spots according to the P-UPS technique in order to extract material degradation in a quantitative way. The P-UPS results indicate that shear dominated fatigued carbon/PPS goes with a reduction of shear properties combined with large fiber distortions. The P-UPS results of the tension-tension fatigued carbon/PPS samples on the other hand reveal a directional degradation of the stiffness properties, reaching a maximum reduction of ?12.8 % along the loading direction. The P-UPS extracted damage characteristics are fully supported by simulations, conventional destructive tests as well as visual inspection. The results demonstrate the excellent capability of the P-UPS method for nondestructively assessing and quantifying both shear-dominated and tension-tension fatigue damage in fabric reinforced plastics.  相似文献

The gross melt fracture defect is related to the flow instabilities developed in the contraction region. To mitigate these upstream instabilities, a convergent radial flow in the die entrance has been created. In fact, the ultimate objective of the present work is to examine the effect of the clearance width of radial flow on the appearance and development of gross melt fracture defect. So, capillary rheometer experiments were performed with linear polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) oil.As for the influence of radial flow width on the morphology of gross melt fracture defect, extrudate photographs show that this imperfection can be mitigated since its frequency is higher and amplitude smaller when the gap of radial flow decreases. Such results may be related both to shear and elongational components of radial flow. Actually, when gap width is very small compared to the external diameter of radial flow, shear deformations become more enhanced with respect to the elongational deformations and thus the helical gross melt fracture becomes more like a surface defect than volume defect.  相似文献

Instabilities in viscoelastic flows   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Viscoelastic instabilities are of practical importance, and are the subject of growing interest. Reviewed here are the fresh developments as well as earlier work in this area, organized into the following categories: instabilities in Taylor-Couette flows, instabilities in cone-and-plate and plate-and-plate flows, instabilities in parallel shear flows, extrudate distortions and fracture, instabilities in shear flows with interfaces, instabilities in extensional flows, instabilities in multidimensional flows, and thermohydrodynamic instabilities. Emphasized in the review are comparisons between theory and experiment and suggested directions for future work.  相似文献

We characterize the transient shear rheology of polystyrene/carbon nanofiber composites. Our experimental measurements of the composites show increasing stress overshoot responses to transient shear as the carbon nanofiber concentration increases. We also find the steady state viscosity reached at long times during application of a constant shear rate increases with increasing carbon nanofiber concentration. Flow reversal experiments show the effects of nanofiber orientation and structural evolution on the composite's rheological response. We present a microstructurally based constitutive model where all but two parameters are determined by rheological characterization of the pure polymer and the shape and concentration of the nanoparticles. The Folgar-Tucker constant, CI, is treated as a fitting parameter, while several definitions for the shape factors A, B, C and F are evaluated. We make note of the effects each parameter has on the model's predictions. We find that the constitutive model is in agreement with our experimentally measured transient shear rheology of the PS/CNF melt composites for the CNF concentrations and shear rates presented.  相似文献

Six samples of polypropylene produced by Montepolimeri were carefully characterized in dilute solution and studied, with a capillary extrusion rheometer, in large ranges of shear and temperature. The extrudate swelling behaviour is found to be regular as far as its shear stress and temperature dependence is concerned, but the influence of molecular weight is abnormal. With increasing molecular weight the amount of elastic recovery (as measured by the extrudate swell) decreases markedly and the shear modulusG (obtained from the data by making use of simplifying assumptions) appears to be an increasing function ofM w at all the shear stress investigated. No similar results appear to be reported in the literature.Presented in part at the VIIIth Intern. Congress on Rheology, Naples, September 1–5, 1980.  相似文献

Rheological properties of three different nanocomposites, consisting of graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane grafted reduced graphene oxide (rGO-POSS) as nanofillers and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), were investigated by large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS). The viscoelastic nonlinearity of the three nanofluids groups was studied by Lissajous curves, local nonlinear viscoelastic moduli of an oscillatory shear cycle, and Fourier transform rheology as a function of filler concentration and increasing and decreasing strain magnitude. The nonlinear behavior of the nanofluids was compared to understand the variation of internal microstructures. Firstly, GO/PDMS composites behave with higher moduli and smaller linear viscoelastic range comparing to that of other two composites. Secondly, the elastic stress Lissajous curves of these composites changed from elliptic to rectangular with round the corner with increasing the filler level and strain amplitude. Thirdly, all these three nanofluids exhibited intra-cycle strain stiffening with increasing strains and shear thickening at intermediate strain and then shearing thinning with increasing strain further. Fourthly, higher harmonic intensity of rGO/PDMS increased with increasing strain and came to a plateau, while that of other two nanofluids reached a maximum and then decreased. It suggested that different surface functionalization of nanoparticles will present different rheological behavior due to formed different network and LAOS could be used as a potential helpful method to characterize rheological properties of nanocomposites, especially at higher shear strain.  相似文献

The influence of the loading path on the failure locus of a composite lamina subjected to transverse compression and out-of-plane shear is analyzed through computational micromechanics. This is carried out using the finite element simulation of a representative volume element of the microstructure, which takes into account explicitly fiber and matrix spatial distribution within the lamina. In addition, the actual failure mechanisms (plastic deformation of the matrix and interface decohesion) are included in the simulations through the corresponding constitutive models. Two different interface strength values were chosen to explore the limiting cases of composites with strong or weak interfaces. It was found that failure locus was independent of the loading path for the three cases analyzed (pseudo-radial, compression followed by shear and shear followed by compression) in the composites with strong and weak interfaces. This result was attributed to the fact that the dominant failure mechanism in each material was the same in transverse compression and in shear. Failure is also controlled by the same mechanisms under a combination of both stresses and the failure locus depended mainly on the magnitude of the stresses that trigger fracture rather than in the loading path to reach the critical condition.  相似文献

In the present paper results of a series of plate impact experiments designed to study spall strength in glass–fiber reinforced polymer composites (GRP) are presented. Two GRP architectures are investigated—S2 glass woven roving in Cycom 4102 polyester resin matrix and a balanced 5-harness satin weave E-glass in a Ciba epoxy (LY564) matrix. The GRP specimens were shock loaded using an 82.5 mm bore single-stage gas-gun. A velocity interferometer was used to measure the particle velocity profile at the rear (free) surface of the target plate. The spall strength of the GRP was obtained as a function of the normal component of the impact stress and the applied shear-strain by subjecting the GRP specimens to normal shock compression and combined shock compression and shear loading, respectively. The spall strengths of the two GRP composites were observed to decrease with increasing levels of normal shock compression. Moreover, superposition of shear-strain on the normal shock compression was found to be highly detrimental to the spall strength. The E-glass reinforced GRP composite was found to have a much higher level of spall strength under both normal shock compression and combined compression and shear loading when compared to the S2-glass GRP composite. The maximum spall strength of the E-glass GRP composite was found to be 119.5 MPa, while the maximum spall strength for the S2 glass GRP composite was only 53.7 MPa. These relatively low spall strength levels of the S2-glass and the E-glass fiber reinforced composites have important implications to the design and development of GRP-based light-weight integral armor.  相似文献
