Anionic polymerization of N‐methoxymethyl‐N‐isopropylacrylamide ( 1 ) was carried out with 1,1‐diphenyl‐3‐methylpentyllithium and diphenylmethyllithium, ‐potassium, and ‐cesium in THF at ?78 °C for 2 h in the presence of Et2Zn. The poly( 1 )s were quantitatively obtained and possessed the predicted molecular weights based on the feed molar ratios between monomer to initiators and narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn = 1.1). The living character of propagating carbanion of poly( 1 ) either at 0 or ?78 °C was confirmed by the quantitative efficiency of the sequential block copolymerization using N,N‐diethylacrylamide as a second monomer. The methoxymethyl group of the resulting poly( 1 ) was completely removed to give a well‐defined poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide), poly(NIPAM), via the acidic hydrolysis. The racemo diad contents in the poly(NIPAM)s could be widely changed from 15 to 83% by choosing the initiator systems for 1 . The poly(NIPAM)s obtained with Li+/Et2Zn initiator system possessed syndiotactic‐rich configurations (r = 75–83%), while either atactic (r = 50%) or isotactic poly(NIPAM) (r = 15–22%) was generated with K+/Et2Zn or Li+/LiCl initiator system, respectively. Atactic and syndiotactic poly(NIPAM)s (42 < r < 83%) were water‐soluble, whereas isotactic‐rich one (r < 31%) was insoluble in water. The cloud points of the aqueous solution of poly(NIPAM)s increased from 32 to 37 °C with the r‐contents. These indicated the significant effect of stereoregularity of the poly(NIPAM) on the water‐solubility and the cloud point in water © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of narrowly distributed poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) with molecular weight ranging from 8 × 104 to 2.3 × 107 g/mol were prepared by a combination of free radical polymerization and fractional precipitation. An ultrasensitive differential scanning calorimetry was used to study the effect of molecular weight on the thermal volume transition of these PNIPAM samples. The specific heat peak of the transition temperature (Tp,0) was obtained by extrapolation to zero heating rate (HR) because of the linear dependence of the transition temperature (Tp) on the HR. The relation between Tp,0 and the degree of polymerization (N) was investigated. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 48: 1388–1393, 2010  相似文献

A novel poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA)/PNIPA interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) was synthesized and characterized. In comparison with conventional PNIPA hydrogels, the shrinking rate of the IPN hydrogel increased when gels, swollen at 20 °C, were immersed in 50 °C water. The phase‐transition temperature of the IPN gel remained unchangeable because of the same chemical constituent in the PNIPA gel. The reswelling kinetics were slower than those of the PNIPA hydrogel because of the higher crosslinking density of the IPN hydrogel. The IPN hydrogel had better mechanical strength because of its higher crosslinking density and polymer volume fraction. The release behavior of 5‐fluorouracil (5‐Fu) from the IPN hydrogel showed that, at a lower temperature, the release of 5‐Fu was controlled by the diffusion of water molecules in the gel network. At a higher temperature, 5‐Fu inside the gel could not diffuse into the medium after a burst release caused by the release of the drug on the surface of the gel. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm‐b‐PEO‐b‐PNIPAAm) triblock copolymer was synthesized via the reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer/macromolecular design via the interchange of xanthate (RAFT/MADIX) process with xanthate‐terminated poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as the macromolecular chain transfer agent. The successful synthesis of the ABA triblock copolymer inspired the preparation of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PNIPAAm‐b‐PEO) copolymer networks with N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide as the crosslinking agent with the similar approach. With the RAFT/MADIX process, PEO chains were successfully blocked into poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) networks. The unique architecture of PNIPAAm‐b‐PEO networks allows investigating the effect of the blocked PEO chains on the deswelling and reswelling behavior of PNIPAAm hydrogels. It was found that with the inclusion of PEO chains into the PNIPAAm networks as midblocks, the swelling ratios of the hydrogels were significantly enhanced. Furthermore, the PNIPAAm‐b‐PEO hydrogels displayed faster response to the external temperature changes than the control PNIPAAm hydrogel. The accelerated deswelling and reswelling behaviors have been interpreted based on the formation of PEO microdomains in the PNIPAAm networks, which could act as the hydrophilic tunnels to facilitate the diffusion of water molecules in the PNIPAAm networks. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Exothermic nonreversing process is predicted to present in the phase transition of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM). By employing TOPEM‐DSC, exothermic nonreversing heat flow peak is observed for the first time, and it usually appears under nonquasi‐static conditions. The exothermic nonreversing heat flow is proved to be from the formation of hydrogen bonds by the comparative studies on the phase transition of poly(N,N‐diethylacrylamide) (PDEAM) and cyclic heating and cooling of PDEAM and PNIPAM. Further TOPEM‐DSC studies on the phase transition of poly(NIPAM‐co‐DEAM) and poly(NIPAM‐co‐AAm) prove that hydrophobic force rather than hydrogen bonding is the main driving force for the phase transition, and hydrophobic force is also the driving force for the formation of inter‐ and intrachain hydrogen bonding. However, the phase transition driven by only hydrophobic force is a slow process. The combined action of hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic force makes the phase transition occur much faster. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. The hydrophobic interaction between hydrophobically modified acrylamide copolymer (HMPAM) and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) in aqueous solutions was investigated. The results show that the solution properties of HMPAM are significantly influenced by the addition of PNIPAM. In dilute regime, the intrinsic viscosity of HMPAM in 0.025 wt % PNIPAM/0.1 M NaCl mixed solution is 17.52 dL g?1, about 2 times 8.66 dL g?1, that in 0.1 M NaCl solution, which is due to the attractive interaction between the hydrophobic parts of PNIPAM and HMPAM molecules. In semidilute regime, below the saturation concentration, the addition of PNIPAM can lead to both the apparent viscosity and the modulus of HMPAM solutions increasing, which is attributed to the number of aggregation junctions increasing, responsible for the increase of the contribution of the reversible network to the viscosity increase, the β value. In addition, a thermothickening behavior for the HMPAM/PNIPAM mixed solution is observed with increasing temperature over 15–30 °C, which is consistent with the large increase of the Huggins coefficient of HMPAM in the presence of PNIPAM from 1.95 to 7.59 as temperature increases from 25 to 30 °C. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PIPAAm), which is a well‐known temperature‐responsive polymer, is modified on substrates by various methods. At 37 °C, PIPAAm modified surface is hydrophobic and allows cells to adhere to and proliferate on the surface. By reducing temperature below the lower critical solution temperature of PIPAAm, the surface turns to hydrophilic and allows cells to detach themselves from the surface spontaneously. With this technology, cell sheet engineering is established several years ago. This review focuses on the preparations and characteristics of PIPAAm‐modified surfaces, and discusses the effect of surface properties on cell adhesion and deadhesion. In addition, the recent improvement of PIPAAm‐modified surfaces for cell culture and the clinical applications of cell sheets harvested from the surfaces are also mentioned. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of sequential full interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) based on poly (N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) and negatively charged poly(N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone) (PNVP) was described and their swelling, drug release, and diffusion studies were investigated. PNIPAAm was used as a host network. According to swelling experiments, IPNs gave relatively lower swelling ratios compared to PNIPAAm hydrogel due to the higher cross‐linking density. Lidocaine (LD) was used as a model drug for the investigation of drug release behavior of IPNs. LD uptake of the IPNs were found to increase from 24 to 166 (mg LD / g dry gel) with increasing amount of PNIPAAm and AMPS contents in the IPN structure. It was observed that the specific interaction between drug and AMPS co‐monomer influenced the drug release profile. In the diffusion transport mechanism study in water, the results indicated that the swelling exponents n for all IPNs are in the range from 0.50 to 0.72. This implies that the swelling transport mechanism was transferred from Fickian to non‐Fickian transport, with increasing AMPS content and NIPAAm character in the IPN structure. In addition, diffusion of LD within the IPNs showed similar trend. The incorporation of AMPS leads to an increase in electrostatic interaction between charge sites on carboxylate ions and cationic LD molecules. Therefore, the highest diffusion coefficient (D) of drug was found for IPN2 sample. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this study, the effect of the level of crosslinking on the properties of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) hydrogels was investigated in terms of their lower critical solution temperature (LCST), interior morphology, equilibrium swelling, and deswelling and swelling kinetics. The thermal analysis showed that PNIPAAm hydrogels, having a wide range of crosslinking levels, exhibited almost the same LCSTs, and this was different from what the conventional theory would have predicted. Scanning electron micrographs revealed that the interior network structure of the PNIPAAm matrix became more porous with an increase in the level of crosslinking. This more porous matrix provided numerous water channels for water diffusion in or out of the matrix and, therefore, an improved response rate to the external temperature changes during the deswelling process and the swelling process. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel temperature‐ and pH‐responsive graft copolymers, poly(L ‐glutamic acid)‐g‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide), were synthesized by coupling amino‐semitelechelic poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) with N‐hydroxysuccinimide‐activated poly(L ‐glutamic acid). The graft copolymers and their precursors were characterized, by ESI‐FTICR Mass Spectrum, intrinsic viscosity measurements and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). The phase‐transition and aggregation behaviors of the graft copolymers in aqueous solutions were investigated by the turbidity measurements and dynamic laser scattering. The solution behavior of the copolymers showed dependence on both temperature and pH. The cloud point (CP) of the copolymer solution at pH 5.0–7.4 was slightly higher than that of the solution of the PNIPAM homopolymer because of the hydrophilic nature of the poly(glutamic acid) (PGA) backbone. The CP markedly decreased when the pH was lowered from 5 to 4.2, caused by the decrease in hydrophilicity of the PGA backbone. At a temperature above the lower critical solution temperature of the PNIPAM chain, the copolymers formed amphiphilic core‐shell aggregates at pH 4.5–7.4 and the particle size was reduced with decreasing pH. In contrast, larger hydrophobic aggregates were formed at pH 4.2. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 4140–4150, 2008  相似文献

Interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) strategy was developed to fabricate novel hydrogels composed of cellulose and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) with high mechanical strength and adjustable thermosensitivity. Cellulose hydrogels were prepared by chemically cross‐linking cellulose in NaOH/urea aqueous solution, which were employed as the first network. The second network was subsequently obtained by in situ polymerization/cross‐linking of N‐isopropylacrylamide in the cellulose hydrogels. The results from FTIR and solid 13C NMR indicated that the two networks co‐existed in the IPN hydrogels, which exhibited uniform porous structure, as a result of good compatibility. The mechanical and swelling properties of IPN hydrogels were strongly dependent on the weight ratio of two networks. Their temperature‐sensitive behaviors and deswelling kinetics were also discussed. This work created double network hydrogels, which combined the advantages of natural polymer and synthesized PNIPAAm collectively in one system, leading to the controllable temperature response and improvement in the physical properties. The addition of mixture of polystyrene‐b‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PS‐b‐PNIPAM) and polystyrene homopolymer (h‐PS) in tetrahydrofuran dropwise into water leads to nanoparticles with a PS core and a thermally sensitive PNIPAM shell. The effects of the ratio of the homopolymer to copolymer and temperature on the formation and stabilization of the dispersion were investigated by using a combination of static and dynamic laser light scattering. PNIPAM shell continuously collapses as temperature increases in the range 20–40 °C. Such formed particles are stable even at temperatures much higher than lower critical solution temperature (LCST ~ 32 °C) of PNIPAM. Our results reveal that the area occupied per hydrophilic PNIPAM chain on the hydrophobic PS core remains nearly a constant regardless of the amount of h‐PS in the polymer mixture. This clearly indicates that the surface area occupied per hydrophilic group is a critical parameter for stabilizing particles dispersed in water. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Mixed micelle formation between two oppositely charged diblock copolymers that have a common thermosensitive nonionic block of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAM) has been studied. The block copolymer mixed solutions were investigated under equimolar charge conditions as a function of both temperature and total polymer concentrations by turbidimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, two‐dimensional proton nuclear magnetic nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (2D 1H NMR NOESY), dynamic light scattering, and small angle X‐ray scattering measurements. Well‐defined and electroneutral cylindrical micelles were formed with a radius and a length of about 3 nm and 35 nm, respectively. In the micelles, the charged blocks built up a core, which was surrounded by a corona of PNIPAAM chains. The 2D 1H NMR NOESY experiments showed that a minor block mixing occurred between the core blocks and the PNIPAAM blocks. By approaching the lower critical solution temperature of PNIPAAM, the PNIPAAM chains collapsed, which induced aggregation of the micelles. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Phase transition and mobility of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) chains with three different types of end groups (hydroxyl, carbon–carbon double bond, and camphoric sulfonic groups) have been studied by measurements of the normal 1H NMR spectrum, spin–spin relaxation time, and 2D NOESY spectrum. It is found that at room temperature not only the end group parts but also the part of the PNIPA chain with hydroxyl end group have higher mobility than corresponding parts of PNIPA with double bond and camphoric sulfonic end groups. The lower critical solution temperatures (LCST) of PNIPAs modified with hydrophilic hydroxyl and hydrophobic double bond end groups are inversely dependent and directly dependent on the molecular weight of polymer respectively, whereas the LCST of PNIPA with the camphoric sulfonic end group bearing both hydrophobic and hydrophilic structures is independent of the molecular weight. The double bond end groups collapse simultaneously with inner segments of the PNIPA chain, whereas the hydroxyl and camphoric sulfonic end groups still exhibit higher mobility and do not shrink tightly after heating‐induced collapsing of inner segments. It is suggested that the hydroxyl and camphoric sulfonic end groups locate on the surface of globules, but the double bond end groups are probably buried inside the globules. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Spherical single‐chain‐particles of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) were prepared in aqueous solution above the lower critical solution temperature upon the addition of sodium dodecyl sulfate. The size of the single‐chain‐particles was investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy and viscosity measurements of the corresponding solutions, indicating the absence of inter‐chain entanglements among the single‐chain‐particles.

To shed new light on the mechanisms of saccharide stereochemistry effect on macromolecules in aqueous solutions, we studied the effect of three monosaccharide stereoisomers, glucose, galactose, and mannose, on the swelling of Poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) hydrogels. We equilibrated PNIPA hydrogels in sugar solutions of different concentrations at 25 °C, and determined gel volume and mass swelling ratios, and sugar concentration imbalance. The volume‐phase‐transition occurred at molal concentrations of 0.587 ± 0.004 (galactose), 0.724 ± 0.003 (glucose), and 0.846 ± 0.004 (mannose). The same order of sugars emerged for the gel‐swelling and the magnitude of the sugar concentration‐imbalance, which correlated with sugar isentropic molar compressibility and hydration number. The more hydrated the sugar, the worse a cosolvent it is for the polymer, hence the larger the deswelling and the more negative the sugar concentration imbalance. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: Robust thermosensitive PAH‐g‐PNIPAAm/PSS particles were prepared by addition of a poly(allylamine)‐graft‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) particle suspension into poly(styrene sulfonate) solution above the LCST of PAH‐g‐PNIPAAm. Scanning force microscopy revealed stable and well‐separated particles in water at room temperature. The zeta‐potential showed a negative surface charge of the particles. Their thermosensitive behavior was demonstrated by dynamic light scattering. The release of rhodamine 6G loaded particles could respond to the incubation temperature.

Thermoresponsive colloidal microgels were prepared by polymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) in the presence of a crosslinking monomer, N,N‐methylenebisacrylamide, in water with varying concentrations (<CMC) of an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS). Volume phase transitions of the prepared microgels were studied in D2O by 1H NMR spectroscopy including the measurements of spin–lattice (T1) and spin–spin (T2) relaxation times for the protons of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) at temperature range 22–50 °C. In addition, microcalorimetry, turbidometry, dynamic light scattering, and electrophoretic mobility measurements were used to characterize the aqueous microgels. As expected, increasing SDS concentration in the polymerization batch decreased the hydrodynamic size of an aqueous microgel. Structures with high mobilities at temperatures above the LCST of PNIPAM were observed in the microgels prepared with small amount of SDS, as indicated by the relaxation times of different PNIPAM protons. It was concluded that the high mobility at high temperatures is in connection to a mobile surface layer with polyelectrolyte nature and with high local LCST. High SDS concentration in the synthesis was observed to prevent the formation of permanent, solid PNIPAM particles. The results from different characterization methods indicated that PNIPAM microgels prepared in high SDS concentrations appear to be more homogeneously structured than their correspondences prepared in low SDS concentration. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Exfoliated montmorillonite (MMT)/poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) and MMT/poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐acrylamide) [P(NIPAAm‐co‐AAm)] nanocomposites were fabricated by soap‐free emulsion polymerization. Interestingly, as the content of MMT was increased from 0 to 10 wt %, the glass transition temperature of MMT/PNIPAAm was decreased from 145 to 122 °C, whereas that of the MMT/P(NIPAAm‐co‐AAm) increased from 95 to 153 °C. Although the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of 32 °C for the MMT/PNIPAAm nanocomposites in aqueous solutions was slightly increased with the content of MMT, that of the MMT/P(NIPAAm‐co‐AAm) was decreased from 70 to 65 °C. A mechanism that the hydrogen bonds between the amide groups of PNIPAAm were interfered by the exfoliated MMT nano‐platelets for the MMT/PNIPAAm nanocomposites and the preferred absorption of acrylamide units to the MMT nanoplatelets rather than N‐isopropylacrylamide in the MMT/P(NIPAAm‐co‐AAm) nanocomposites was suggested to interpret these unusual transition behavior. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
