In this work, a novel method to fabricate polymer spheres encapsulated in polymer films by breaking embedded electrospun fibers (BEEF) was developed. Polymer fibers were first prepared by electrospinning and embedded in other polymer films using a three‐layer deposition method. After thermal annealing, the electrospun fibers transform into individual spheres with regular spacing and sizes. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS) are both used as the fiber or film materials. The transformation process can be observed in‐situ by optical microscope (OM) and is similar to the Plateau–Rayleigh instability. The growth rates of the surface undulation of the fibers are calculated, and higher growth rates are observed at higher annealing temperatures. The sizes of the encapsulated polymer spheres agree well with the theoretical predictions. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Phys. 2016 , 54, 2463–2470  相似文献

Polymer nanodielectrics have become attractive for practical applications such as electric energy storage and electromechanical actuation. However, to enhance the apparent dielectric constant of polymer nanodielectrics, a significant amount (>30 vol %) of spherical particles needs to be incorporated into the polymer matrix. As a consequence, melt-processing of polymer nanodielectrics into uniform thin films becomes difficult at such a high filler content, and electric breakdown strength will greatly decrease. In this work, we describe a three-phase composite approach towards high energy density nanodielectrics at low filling ratios. In this approach, a highly polarizable tetrameric metallophthalocyanine (TMPc) initiator is coated onto 68 nm BaTiO3 nanoparticles, from which poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) brushes are grafted using atom transfer radical polymerization for the nanoparticles to be uniformly dispersed in a poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) [P(VDF-HFP)] matrix. For comparison, two-phase P(VDF-HFP)/BaTiO3 composites without the TMPc interfacial layer are also prepared. Owing to the high polarizability of the TMPc interface layer, the three-phase composite films exhibit higher dielectric constant and thus higher energy density than the two-phase composite films at volume-filling ratios below 5 vol %. Therefore, these high energy density three-phase nanodielectrics with a low filling ratio are promising for melt-processing into thin dielectric films. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. A systematic approach and a new scheme for the evaluation of the as–is encapsulation of CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots into polymer matrices is proposed, aiming to the implementation of thin film photonic integrated structures. Work focuses on quantum dots capped by hexadecylamine and trioctylphosphine oxide with no ligand exchange or other intermediate processing steps involved. The polymers studied include poly(methyl–methacrylate) (PMMA), polystyrene and acrylic polymers incorporating long alkyl chains, which are expected to promote the compatibility of the quantum dot ligands to that of the polymer chains. In this approach, the variation of photoluminescence properties of the nanocomposite thin films is measured versus increased concentration of the quantum dots, so as to evaluate the suitability of each polymer structure as an efficient host. Furthermore, the refractive index of the quantum dots/polymer nanocomposite thin films are also estimated using white light reflectance spectroscopy data, as appropriate for the integration of photonic devices. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The thermomechanical behavior of polymer nanocomposites is mostly governed by interfacial properties which rely on particle–polymer interactions, particle loading, and dispersion state. We recently showed that poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) adsorbed nanoparticles in poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) matrices displayed an unusual thermal stiffening response. The molecular origin of this unique stiffening behavior resulted from the enhanced PEO mobility within glassy PMMA chains adsorbed on nanoparticles. In addition, dynamic asymmetry and chemical heterogeneities existing in the interfacial layers around particles were shown to improve the reinforcement of composites as a result of good interchain mixing. Here, the role of chain rigidity in this interfacially controlled reinforcement in PEO composites is investigated. We show that particles adsorbed with less rigid polymers improve the mechanical properties of composites. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Phys. 2019 , 57, 9–14  相似文献

Microwave annealing enables rapid (60 s) ordering and orientation of block copolymer films. The developed morphology in polystyrene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS‐b‐PMMA) thin films depends on details of the heating rate that is controlled by microwave output energy as well as the sample location in the microwave. Over a wide heating rate (1.1–2.7 °C/s), perpendicular orientation of the cylindrical mesostructure at the surface is >50% after 60 s, but goes through a maximum at 1.8 °C/s leading to approximately 97% perpendicular cylinders at the surface. The propagation of this perpendicular surface morphology through the film thickness is also dependent upon the microwave annealing conditions. The surface structure evolves with the microwave annealing time from imperfect ordering to perpendicular cylinders to parallel cylinders as the annealing time increases. This work demonstrates the importance of controlling the heating rate during microwave annealing, which will be critical for optimizing microwave conditions for directed self‐assembly. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Printed electronics is a rapidly developing field of research which covers any electronic devices or circuits that can be processed using direct printing techniques. Among those printing techniques, inkjet printing is a technique of increasing interest for organic field‐effect transistors (FETs) due to its fully data driven and direct patterning. In this work, the morphology of semi‐conducting polymer/insulating polymer blends from inkjet printing and their FET properties have been investigated. We attempted to optimize the morphology of the blends by the addition of a co‐solvent to the blend solution prior to film deposition. By varying the boiling temperature of the co‐solvent, blend films are fabricated with varying domain purity and different degree of semi‐conducting polymer ordering. The morphologies of all the as‐cast samples from inkjet printing and subsequently thermally annealed samples are characterized by grazing incidence wide angle x‐ray scattering and small angle neutron scattering. The results indicate that the sample where a low boiling temperature co‐solvent is used exhibits a lower degree of semi‐conducting polymer ordering and less pure domains, resulting in a decrease of hole mobility. The morphologies that are formed when high boiling temperature co‐solvent is used, however, give a higher degree of semi‐conducting polymer ordering along with higher domain purity, significantly improving hole mobility up to 1.44 cm2 V?1 s?1 at VDS = 40 V. More importantly, with thermal annealing, all the samples exhibit similar semi‐conducting polymer ordering and domain sizes while the domain purity significantly varies. This work is a unique example that demonstrates the importance of domain purity in the optimization of morphology and FET performance, which is previous unavailable. It also provides a novel process that can efficiently control the morphology of semi‐conducting polymer/insulating polymer mixtures during deposition to maximize FET performance from inkjet printing. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nanoparticles provide an attractive route to modifying polymer thin film properties, yet controlling the dispersion and morphology of functionalized nanoparticle filled films is often difficult. Block copolymers can provide an ideal template for directed assembly of nanoparticles under controlled nanoparticle‐polymer interactions. Previously we observed that neat films of cylinder forming poly(styrene‐b‐methyl methacrylate) PS‐b‐PMMA block copolymer (c‐BCP) orient vertically with dynamic sharp thermal cold zone annealing (CZA‐S) over wide range of CZA‐S speed (0.1–10) μm/s. Here, we introduce a low concentration (1–5 wt %) of nanoparticles of phenolic group functionalized CdS (fCdS‐NP), to PMMA cylinder forming polystyrene‐b‐poly (methyl methacrylate) block copolymer (c‐BCP) films. Addition of the fCdS‐NP induces a vertical to horizontal orientation transition at low CZA‐S speed, V = 5 μm/s. The orientation flip studies were analyzed using AFM and GISAXS. These results confirm generality of our previously observed orientation transition in c‐BCP under low speed CZA‐S with other nanoparticles (gold [Au‐NP], fulleropyrrolidine [NCPF‐NP]) in the same concentration range, but reveal new aspects not previously examined: (1) A novel observation of significant vertical order recovery from 5–10% vertical cylindrical fraction at V = 5 μm/s to 46–63% vertical cylindrical fraction occurring at high CZA‐S speed, V = 10 μm/s for the fCdS nanoparticle filled films. (2) We rule out the possibility that a nanoparticle wetting layer on the substrate is responsible for the vertical to horizontal flipping transition. (3) We demonstrate that the orientation flipping results can be achieved in a nanoparticle block copolymer system where the nanoparticles are apparently better‐dispersed within only one (matrix PS) domain unlike our previous nanoparticle system studied. We consider facile processing conditions to fabricate functionalized nanoparticles filled PS‐PMMA block copolymer films with controlled anisotropy, a useful strategy in the design of next generation electronic and photonic materials. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In order to explore the degree of contact between hydrophilic blocks and the substrate, the dewetting behavior of Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films of polystyrene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS‐b‐PMMA) induced by PMMA‐selective acetone vapor were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) for the first time. With the annealing of acetone vapor, the LB films of PS‐b‐PMMA undergo the swelling and coalescing of aggregates, the formation of bicontinuous patterns, the formation of droplets, and the periodic increase and decrease of droplets. The emergence of the bicontinuous patterns indicates that the dewetting occurs via the spinodal dewetting mechanism. The periodic droplet evolution is a novel phenomenon observed for the first time and quite different from the single droplet evolution of spin‐coated films, which is probably due to the degree of contact between PMMA blocks and the substrate in the LB films being larger than that in the latter. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An embedment of metal nanoparticles of well‐defined sizes in thin polymer films is of significant interest for a number of practical applications, in particular, for preparing materials with tunable plasmonic properties. In this article, we present a fabrication route for metal–polymer composites based on cluster beam technique allowing the formation of monocrystalline size‐selected silver nanoparticles with a ±5–7% precision of diameter and controllable embedment into poly (methyl methacrylate). It is shown that the soft‐landed silver clusters preserve almost spherical shape with a slight tendency to flattening upon impact. By controlling the polymer hardness (from viscous to soft state) prior the cluster deposition and annealing conditions after the deposition the degree of immersion of the nanoparticles into polymer can be tuned, thus, making it possible to create composites with either particles partly or fully embedded into the film. Good size selection and rather homogeneous dispersion of nanoparticles in the thin polymer film lead to excellent plasmonic properties characterized by the narrow band and high quality factor of localized surface plasmon resonance. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of confinement on glass transition temperature (Tg) and physical aging are measured in polystyrene (PS), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (P2VP) nanocomposites containing 10- to 15-nm-diameter silica nanospheres or 47-nm-diameter alumina nanospheres. Nanocomposites are made by spin coating films from sonicated solutions of polymer, nanofiller, and dye. The Tgs and physical aging rates are measured by fluorescence of trace levels of dye in the films. At 0.1–10 vol % nanofiller, Tg values can be enhanced or depressed relative to neat, bulk Tg (Tg,bulk) or invariant with nanofiller content. For alumina nanocomposites, Tg increases relative to Tg,bulk by as much as 16 K in P2VP, decreases by as much as 5 K in PMMA, and is invariant in PS. By analogy with thin polymer films, these results are explained by wetted P2VP–nanofiller interfaces with attractive interactions, nonwetted PMMA–nanofiller interfaces (free space at the interface), and wetted PS–nanofiller interfaces lacking attractive interactions, respectively. The presence of wetted or nonwetted interfaces is controlled by choice of solvent. For example, 0.1–0.6 vol % silica/PMMA nanocomposites exhibit Tg enhancements as large as 5 K or Tg reductions as large as 17 K relative to Tg,bulk when films are made from methyl ethyl ketone or acetic acid solutions, respectively. A factor of 17 reduction of physical aging rate relative to that of neat, bulk P2VP is demonstrated in a 4 vol % alumina/P2VP nanocomposite. This suggests that a strategy for achieving nonequilibrium, glassy polymeric systems that are stable or nearly stable to physical aging is to incorporate well-dispersed nanoparticles possessing attractive interfacial interactions with the polymer. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The objective of the study is to formulate exclusive block copolymer (BCP) nanocomposites by dispersing bcp end‐grafted nanoparticles (bcp‐g‐nps) of PMMA‐b‐PS‐g‐TiO2 within PS‐b‐PMMA matrix. PMMA‐b‐PS‐g‐TiO2 is synthesized using a “grafting‐to” approach and characterized by XPS and TGA to establish that the copolymer chains were bonded to NPs. Good dispersion of bcp‐g‐nps in PMMA and PS‐PMMA bcp films is observed, in contrast to poor dispersion in PS films. In PS‐PMMA films, the compatible and identical bcp nature of the end‐grafted polymer, and large NP size caused it to span across entire PS‐PMMA domains. Poor and good dispersion in PS and PMMA matrices, respectively, can be rationalized by the fact that NPs interactions are driven by the PMMA at the outer corona of the bcp‐g‐nps. Developing bcp‐g‐nps as a strategic route to preparation of highly dispersed high permittivity NPs like titanium dioxide (TiO2) in bcp matrix can have important ramifications for energy storage devices. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The loss of optical transparency when polymer films are immersed in water, which is called “water whitening,” severely limits their use as clear barrier coatings. It is found that this problem is particularly acute in films deposited from polymers synthesized via emulsion polymerization using surfactants. Water whitening is less severe in secondary dispersion (SD) polymers, which are made by dispersing solution polymers in water without the use of surfactants. NMR relaxometry in combination with optical transmission analysis and electron microscopy reveal that some of the water sorbed in emulsion polymer films is contained within nanosized “pockets” or bubbles that scatter light. In contrast, the water in SD polymer films is mainly confined at particle interfaces, where it scatters light less strongly and its molecular mobility is reduced. The addition of surfactant to a SD creates a periodic structure that displays a stop band in the optical transmission. The total amount of sorbed water is not a good indicator of polymers prone to water whitening. Instead, the particular locations of the water within the film must be considered. Both the amount of water and the size of the local water regions (as are probed by NMR relaxometry) are found to determine water whitening. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Phase behaviors induced by solvent annealing in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(styrene‐ran‐acrylonitrile) (SAN) blend ultrathin films have been investigated by atomic force microscopy and grazing incidence small‐angle X‐ray scattering. Our results indicate that both the phase separation within the blend and the dewetting of the film induced by composition fluctuation take place upon the selective solvent annealing, producing complex structures containing upper droplets (of one phase) and mimic‐films (of the other rich‐phase). The use of acetic acid (the selective solvent for PMMA) generates PMMA mimic‐film and SAN droplets, while the introduction of DMF (exhibiting better solubility for SAN) vapor results in the formation of SAN mimic‐film and PMMA droplets. Essentially, the interaction at polymer/substrate interface, resultant wettability of selected component, solubility of PMMA and SAN in adopted solvent dominate not only the phase separation and the dewetting of the whole film but also the synergism of them. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymer/nanoparticle composite films are receiving growing attention thanks to their potential for application in ultra-thin electronic and optical devices. Polymer blend demixing has been shown to be a suitable technique for the structuring of polymer thin films and the patterning of nanoparticles (NP) within them. In this work we show that the morphology of thin polymer films made by spin-casting a polymer blend solution containing NP fillers on a surface depends strongly on the concentration of NP fillers. More specifically, polystyrene/polymethylmethacrylate (PS/PMMA) films formed from a toluene solution, and which demix following a nucleation and growth mechanism, were studied. It was found that both the height and the surface density of PMMA domains increased as the concentration of CoPt:Cu NPs in the film was increased. We find that similar effects are induced in a NP-free PS/PMMA demixed film upon increasing the molecular weight of the PS molecules. This suggests that under certain conditions the NPs and the polymer molecules in the blend do not behave as separate species but form aggregates.  相似文献

We investigate effects of two spin-coating parameters, relative humidity (5% < or = RH < or = 80%) in ambient atmosphere and water content (3 wt % < or = f(H2O) < or = 20 wt %) in solution (rich in tetrahydrofuran), on the structure of breath figures (BF) formed in spin-cast films of polar poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and PMMA mixed with nonpolar polystyrene (PS). Film morphologies, examined with atomic and lateral force microscopy, are analyzed with integral geometry analysis to yield morphological BF measures. In PMMA, water added to solution has much stronger impact than that from moisture on formed BFs, which could be ordered (with conformational entropy S approximately 0.9-1.0). In PMMA/PS, BFs decorate exclusively polar PMMA domains, resulting in morphologies with two length scales (sub-micrometer BFs and domains >10 microm). This suggests a novel strategy for herarchic structure formation in multicomponent polymer films. In PS/PMMA, BFs are better developed than in pure PMMA spin-coated in identical conditions. These observations show that the air boundary layer facing the spin-cast polymer film (region) is more important than the ambient atmosphere.  相似文献

Polymer composites composed of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and silica (14 nm diameter) have been investigated. The influences of sample preparation and processing have been probed. Two types of sample preparation methods were investigated: (i) solution mixture of PMMA and silica in methyl ethyl ketone and (ii) in situ synthesis of PMMA in the presence of silica. After removing all solvent or monomer, as confirmed using thermogravimetric analysis, and after compression molding, drops in Tg of 5–15 °C were observed for all composites (2–12% w/w silica) and even pure polymer reference samples. However, after additional annealing for 72 h at 140 °C, all previously observed drops in Tg disappeared, and the intrinsic Tg of bulk, pure PMMA was again observed. This is indicative of nonequilibrium trapped voids being present in the as‐molded samples. Field‐emission scanning electron microscopy was used to show well‐dispersed particles, and dynamic mechanical analysis was used to probe the mechanical properties (i.e., storage modulus) of the fully equilibrated composites. Even though no equilibrium Tg changes were observed, the addition of silica to the PMMA matrices was observed to improve the mechanical properties of the glassy polymer host. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A procedure for the formation of intimate blends of three binary polymer systems polycarbonate (PC)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), PC/poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and PMMA/PVAc is described. PC/PMMA, PC/PVAc, and PMMA/PVAc pairs were included in γ‐cyclodextrin (γ‐CD) channels and were then simultaneously coalesced from their common γ‐CD inclusion compounds (ICs) to obtain intimately mixed blends. The formation of ICs between polymer pairs and γ‐CD were confirmed by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was observed [solution 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)] that the ratios of polymers in coalesced PC/PMMA and PC/PVAc binary blends are significantly different than the starting ratios, and PC was found to be preferentially included in γ‐CD channels when compared with PMMA or PVAc. Physical mixtures of polymer pairs were also prepared by coprecipitation and solution casting methods for comparison. DSC, solid‐state 1H NMR, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and direct insertion probe pyrolysis mass spectrometry (DIP‐MS) data indicated that the PC/PMMA, PC/PVAc, and PMMA/PVAc binary polymer blends were homogeneously mixed when they were coalesced from their ICs. A single, common glass transition temperature (Tg) recorded by DSC heating scans strongly suggested the presence of a homogeneous amorphous phase in the coalesced binary polymer blends, which is retained after thermal cycling to 270 °C. The physical mixture samples showed two distinct Tgs and 1H T values for the polymer components, which indicated phase‐separated blends with domain sizes above 5 nm, while the coalesced blends exhibited uniform 1H spin‐lattice relaxation values, indicating intimate blending in the coalesced samples. The TGA results of coalesced and physical binary blends of PC/PMMA and PC/PVAc reveal that in the presence of PC, the thermal stability of both PMMA and PVAc increases. Yet, the presence of PMMA and PVAc decreases the thermal stability of PC itself. DIP‐MS observations suggested that the degradation mechanisms of the polymers changed in the coalesced blends, which was attributed to the presence of molecular interactions between the well‐mixed polymer components in the coalesced samples. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cast‐hybrid films composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and silver nitrate were treated according to three different ways, thermal annealing, UV‐irradiation, and chemical reduction by a borohydride solution, to obtain PVA/silver nanocomposite films. The nanostructuration process was studied as a function of the treatment conditions, and discussed as a function of the mobility state of the polymer chains in the nanocomposite matrix during treatment. A homogeneous dispersion of crystalline silver nanoparticles was obtained by thermal annealing above Tg and below Tm and UV‐lamp irradiation below Tg. For these two treatments, the major processing parameters were the annealing temperature and time and the UV‐exposure time, respectively. For low‐conversion rate in Ag(0), the films evolved upon ageing at room temperature. Totally different morphology and Ag(0) conversion were achieved by chemical reduction in a borohydride solution. All the silver ions were reduced into Ag(0), and crystalline silver nanoparticles layers parallel to the film surface were observed after the treatment. This morphology was related to the high‐swollen state of the polymer matrix during treatment. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 2062–2071, 2008  相似文献

Based on a low‐cost fabrication routine microstructured conducting polymer films of poly (dioctylfluorene‐co‐benzothiadiazole) (F8BT) are prepared without any heat treatment or vacuum steps. The influence of thermal annealing at temperatures below the glass transition temperature of F8BT on such microstructured channel structures is investigated. In the applied structuring routine, a F8BT film is spin coated on a channel‐type hard master structure and afterwards floated on a flat support. Thereby, the properties of the final polymeric structures, for example channel width and height, can be tuned by simply varying the polymer concentration in solution and using the same master structure. With in situ grazing incidence small angle X‐ray scattering and imaging ellipsometry the installed channel structure and the influence of thermal treatment are probed. A complex interplay between a macroscopic polymer flow (reduced channel heights) and a molecular rearrangement (formation of mesoscopic crystallites) takes place during thermal annealing. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, a novel zwitterionic conjugated polyelectrolyte containing tetraphenylethene unit was synthesized via Pd‐catalyzed Sonogashira reaction. The resulting polymer (P2), which exhibited typical aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) properties, was weakly fluorescent in dilute DMSO solution and showed bright fluorescence emissions when aggregated in DMSO/water mixtures or fabricated into conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPNs). The nanoparticles from P2 could be prepared by reprecipitation method with an average diameter around 23 nm. Notably, the cell‐staining efficiencies of lipid‐P2 nanoparticles could be enhanced with lipid encapsulation and these nanoparticles were endocytosed via caveolae‐mediated and clathrin‐mediated endocytosis pathways. Furthermore, the lipid‐P2 nanoparticles with low cytotoxicity, high photostability and efficient cell staining ability could be employed for in vitro detection of Fe3+ ions in A549 cells. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
