The atom transfer radical polymerizations of styrene were successfully carried out in bulk and solution, respectively, at 115 °C, with a novel photoiniferter reagent, (1‐naphthyl)methyl N,N‐diethyldithiocarbamate (NMDC), as an initiator in the presence of copper (I) bromide and N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine. The results showed that NMDC was an effective initiator with high initiation efficiency for ATRP of St. The polymerization rate was first‐order with respect to the monomer concentration and the molecular weights of the obtained polystyrene (PS) increased linearly with the monomer conversion, with very narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn = 1.07–1.29). The functionalized naphthalene‐labeled PS bearing N,N‐(diethylamino)dithiocarbamoyl group which was confirmed by 1H NMR analysis, and chain extension of the PS exhibited fluorescence and ultraviolet absorption in chloroform (CHCl3). © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Metal template synthesis is a useful methodology to make sophisticated macromolecular architectures because of the variety of metal ion coordination. To use metal template methodology, chelating functionalities should be introduced to macromolecules before complexation. In this article, we demonstrate the click‐to‐chelate approach to install chelating functionality to polystyrene (PS) and complexation with Ru(II) ions to form 3‐arm and 4‐arm star‐branched PS Ru(II) complexes. Azide‐terminated PS (PS‐N3) was readily prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization using 1‐bromoethylbenzene as an initiator followed by substitution of bromine by an azide group. The Cu(I)‐catalyzed 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition of PS‐N3 with 2‐ethynylpyridine or 2,6‐diethynylpyridine affords 2‐(1H‐1,2,3‐triazol‐4‐yl)pyridine (PS‐tapy) or 2,6‐bis(1H‐1,2,3‐triazol‐4‐yl)pyridine (PS‐bitapy) ligands bearing one or two PS chains at the first‐position of the triazole rings. Ru(II) complexes of PS‐tapy and PS‐bitapy were prepared by conventional procedure. The number‐averaged molecular weights (Mns) of these complexes were determined to be 6740 and 10,400, respectively, by size exclusion chromatography using PS standards. These Mn values indicated the formation of 3‐arm and 4‐arm star‐branched PS Ru(II) complexes [Ru(PS‐tapy)3](PF6)2 and [Ru(PS‐bitapy)2](PF6)2 on the basis of the Mn values of PS‐tapy (2090) and PS‐bitapy (4970). The structures of these complexes were also confirmed by UV–vis spectroscopy and X‐ray crystallography of the Ru(II) complexes [Ru(Bn‐tapy)3](PF6)2 and [Ru(Bn‐bitapy)2](PF6)2, which bear a benzyl group instead of a PS chain. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cationic emulsions of triblock copolymer particles comprising a poly(n‐butyl acrylate) (PnBA) central block and polystyrene (PS) outer blocks were synthesized by activator generated by electron transfer (AGET) atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Difunctional ATRP initiator, ethylene bis(2‐bromoisobutyrate) (EBBiB), was used as initiator to synthesize the ABA type poly(styrene‐bn‐butyl acrylate‐b‐styrene) (PS‐PnBA‐PS) triblock copolymer. The effects of ligand and cationic surfactant on polymerizations were also discussed. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was used to characterize the molecular weight (Mn) and molecular weight distribution (MWD) of the resultant triblock copolymers. Particle size and particle size distribution of resulted latexes were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS). The resultant latexes showed good colloidal stability with average particle size around 100–300 nm in diameter. Glass transition temperature (Tg) of copolymers was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. The novel trifunctional initiator, 1‐(4‐methyleneoxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpip‐eridinoxyl)‐3,5‐bi(bromomethyl)‐2,4,6‐trimethylbenzene (TEMPO‐2Br), was successfully synthesized and used to prepare the miktoarm star amphiphilic poly(styrene)‐(poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide))2 (PS(PNIPAAM)2) via combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMRP) techniques. Furthermore, the star amphiphilic block copolymer, poly (styrene)‐(poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐b‐4‐vinylpyridine))2 (PS(PNIPAAM‐b‐P4VP)2), was also prepared using PS(PNIPAAM)2 as the macroinitiator and 4‐vinylpyridine as the second monomer by ATRP method. The obtained polymers were well‐defined with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.29). Meanwhile, the self‐assembly behaviors of the miktoarm amphiphilic block copolymers, PS(PNIPAAM)2 and PS(PNIPAAM‐b‐P4VP)2, were also investigated. Interestingly, the aggregate morphology changed from sphere‐shaped micelles (4.7 < pH < 3.0) to a mixture of spheres and rods (1.0 < pH < 3.0), and rod‐shaped nanorods formed when pH value was below 1.0. The LCST of PS(PNIPAAM)2 (pH = 7) was about 31 °C and the LCST of PS(PNIPAAM‐b‐P4VP)2 was about 35 °C (pH = 3). © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of two well‐defined 2,2,5‐trimethyl‐4‐phenyl‐3‐azahexane‐3‐nitroxide‐terminated poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline) with narrow dispersity (Mw/Mn = 1.1) has been achieved for the first time. The insertion of the alkoxyamine end groups at one or both ends of poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline) (PMEOX) chains has been successfully done using a method based on “terminating reagent method.” These macroinitiators have molecular weights ranging from 6.3 × 103 to 9.4 × 103 g mol?1. In contrast, attempt to introduce the alkoxyamine group at one end of PMEOX chain through the “initiator method” has furnished a mixture of alkoxyamine‐graft polyoxazolines because of rearrangement of alkoxyamine occurring during the synthesis of PMEOX. The macroinitiators obtained by terminating reagent method have been used successfully for polymerization of styrene by nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMP), which exhibited all the expected features of a controlled system. The control of NMP has been proved by a good agreement between theoretical and experimental molecular weights and by narrow dispersity (Mw/Mn < 1.2). Different types of well‐defined multiblock copolymers have been prepared: diblock copolymers poly[(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline)‐b‐(styrene)] (PMEOX‐b‐PS) and, for the first time, triblock copolymers poly[(styrene)‐b‐(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline)‐b‐(styrene)] (PS‐b‐PMEOX‐b‐PS). © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. H‐shaped quintopolymer containing different five blocks: poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL), polystyrene (PS), poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as side chains and poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (PtBA) as a main chain was simply prepared from a click reaction between azide end‐functionalized PCL‐PS‐PtBA 3‐miktoarm star terpolymer and PEG–PMMA‐block copolymer with alkyne at the junction point, using Cu(I)/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as a catalyst in DMF at room temperature for 20 h. The H‐shaped quintopolymer was obtained with a number–average molecular weight (Mn) around 32,000 and low polydispersity index (Mw/Mn) 1.20 as determined by GPC analysis in THF using PS standards. The click reaction efficiency was calculated to have 60% from 1H NMR spectroscopy. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 4459–4468, 2008  相似文献

Well‐defined polymethylene‐block‐polystyrene (PM‐b‐PS) diblock copolymers were synthesized via a combination of polyhomologation of ylides and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) polymerization of styrene. Trithiocarbonate‐terminated polymethylenes (PM‐TTCB) (Mn = 1400 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.09 and Mn = 2100 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.20) were obtained via an esterification of S?1‐dodecyl‐S′‐(α,α′‐dimethyl‐α″‐acetate) trithiocarbonate with hydroxyl‐terminated polymethylene synthesized via polyhomologation of ylides followed by oxidation. Then, a series of PM‐b‐PS (Mn = 5500–34,000 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.12–1.25) diblock copolymers were obtained by RAFT polymerization of styrene using PM‐TTCB as a macromolecular chain‐transfer agent. The chain structures of all the polymers were characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), gel permeation chromatography, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The thiocarbonylthio end‐group of PM‐b‐PS was transformed into thiol group by aminolysis and confirmed by UV–vis spectroscopy. In addition, microfibers and microspheres of such diblock copolymers were fabricated by electrospinning process and observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. It is demonstrated here that three different α‐amino N‐carboxyanhydrides (NCAs), including for the first time O‐benzyl‐L ‐threonine NCA, can be polymerized in a controlled/“living” fashion without the need for transition metal catalysts or complex custom‐made glassware. Homopolymerizations in tetrahydrofuran gave monomodal distributions, high conversions, predictable Mn values and displayed first‐order kinetics. Chain extension experiments from poly(benzyl‐L ‐threonine), using N,N‐dimethylacetamide to avoid the formation of insoluble β‐sheets, was used to create a range of block copolypeptides of controlled structure. Monomodal molecular weight distributions are observed throughout and molecular weights agree well with predicted values, although polydispersities are generally higher than those observed using more experimentally challenging techniques. This method therefore represents a practical approach to the synthesis of well‐defined polypeptides without the requirement for specialized glassware or glove‐box techniques. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A dual initiator (4‐hydroxy‐butyl‐2‐bromoisobutyrate), that is, a molecule containing two functional groups capable of initiating two polymerizations occurring by different mechanisms, has been prepared. It has been used for the sequential two‐step synthesis of well‐defined block copolymers of polystyrene (PS) and poly(tetrahydrofuran) (PTHF) by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and cationic ring‐opening polymerization (CROP). This dual initiator contains a bromoisobutyrate group, which is an efficient initiator for the ATRP of styrene in combination with the Cu(0)/Cu(II)/N,N,N,N,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine catalyst system. In this way, PS with hydroxyl groups (PS‐OH) is formed. The in situ reaction of the hydroxyl groups originating from the dual initiator with trifluoromethane sulfonic anhydride gives a triflate ester initiating group for the CROP of tetrahydrofuran (THF), leading to PTHF with a tertiary bromide end group (PTHF‐Br). PS‐OH and PTHF‐Br homopolymers have been applied as macroinitiators for the CROP of THF and the ATRP of styrene, respectively. PS‐OH, used as a macroinitiator, results in a mixture of the block copolymer and remaining macroinitiator. With PTHF‐Br as a macroinitiator for the ATRP of styrene, well‐defined PTHF‐b‐PS block copolymers can be prepared. The efficiency of PS‐OH or PTHF‐Br as a macroinitiator has been investigated with matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, and NMR. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dendritic multifunctional macroinitiators having six and 12 TIPNO‐based alkoxyamines, TIPNO‐6 and TIPNO‐12 , were synthesized and used in the living radical polymerization of styrene (St), methyl acrylate (MA), N,N‐dimethylacrylamide (DMAAm), and isoprene (IP). The polymerizations of St initiated with TIPNO‐6 gave 6‐arm star polymers with narrow polydispersities of 1.14–1.18. In the polymerizations of MA initiated with TIPNO‐6 and TIPNO‐12 , the influences of added TIPNO on the polydispersity indexes (PDIs) of the resulting star polymers were first investigated, and this led to the successful formation of poly(MA) star polymers with narrow polydispersities (1.10–1.18). Moreover, the polymerizations of DMAAm and IP from TIPNO‐6 in the presence or absence of TIPNO were briefly investigated. The benzyl ether bonds of the poly(St) and poly(MA) star polymers were cleaved by treating with Me3SiI or Pd/C, and the resulting arm's parts were analyzed with SEC. The PDIs of the resulting arm parts were low (1.19–1.23), and the Mns agreed with the Mn,theor, indicating that the poly(St) and poly(MA) star polymers had well‐controlled arms. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of arborescent polymers with poly(γ‐benzyl L‐glutamate) (PBG) side chains was achieved through successive grafting reactions. The linear PBG building blocks were produced by the ring‐opening polymerization of γ‐benzyl L‐glutamic acid N‐carboxyanhydride initiated with n‐hexylamine. The polymerization conditions were optimized to minimize the loss of amino chain termini in the reaction. Acidolysis of a fraction of the benzyl groups on a linear PBG substrate and coupling with linear PBG using a carbodiimide/hydroxybenzotriazole promoter system yielded a comb‐branched or generation zero (G0) arborescent PBG. Further partial deprotection and grafting cycles led to arborescent PBG of generations G1 to G3. The solvent used in the coupling reaction had a dramatic influence on the yield of graft polymers of generations G1 and above, dimethylsulfoxide being preferable to N,N‐dimethylformamide. This grafting onto scheme yielded well‐defined (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.06), high molecular weight arborescent PBG in a few reaction cycles, with number‐average molecular weights and branching functionalities reaching over 106 and 290, respectively, for the G3 polymer. α‐Helix to coiled conformation transitions were observed from N,N‐dimethylformamide to dimethyl sulfoxide solutions, even for the highly branched polymers. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A stereoregular 2‐amino‐glycan composed of a mannosamine residue was prepared by ring‐opening polymerization of anhydro sugars. Two different monomers, 1,6‐anhydro‐2‐azido‐mannose derivative ( 3 ) and 1,6‐anhydro‐2‐(N, N‐dibenzylamino)‐mannose derivative ( 6 ), were synthesized and polymerized. Although 3 gave merely oligomers, 6 was promptly polymerized into high polymers of the number‐average molecular weight (Mn) of 2.3 × 104 to 2.9 × 104 with 1,6‐α stereoregularity. The differences of polymerizability of 3 and 6 from those of the corresponding glucose homologs were discussed. It was found that an N‐benzyl group is exceedingly suitable for protecting an amino group in the polymerization of anhydro sugars of a mannosamine type. The simultaneous removal of O‐ and N‐benzyl groups of the resulting polymers was achieved by using sodium in liquid ammonia to produce the first 2‐amino‐glycan, poly‐(1→6)‐α‐D ‐mannosamine, having high molecular weight through ring‐opening polymerization of anhydro sugars.© 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Acrylonitrile (AN) was polymerized by initiators for continuous activator regeneration (ICAR) atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The effect of the ligand, tris(2‐pyridylmethyl)amine (TPMA) and N,N,N',N'‐tetrakis(2‐pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine (TPEN), in the Cu‐based catalyst, the amount of catalyst, several alkyl halide initiators, targeted degree of polymerization, and amount of azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) added were studied. It was determined that the best conditions utilized 50 ppm of CuBr2/TPMA as the catalyst and 2‐bromopropionitrile (BPN) as the initiator. This combination resulted in 46% conversion in 10 h and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) with the narrowest molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.11–1.21). Excellent control was maintained after lowering the catalyst loading to 10 ppm, with 56% conversion in 10 h, experimental molecular weight closely matching the theoretical value, and low dispersity (Mw/Mn < 1.30). Catalyst loadings as low as 1 ppm still provided well‐controlled polymerizations of AN by ICAR ATRP, with 65% conversion in 10 h and PAN with relatively low dispersity (Mw/Mn = 1.41). High chain end functionality (CEF) was confirmed via 1H NMR analysis, for short PAN chains, and via clean chain extensions with n‐butyl acrylate (BA). © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. 3‐Arm star‐block copolymers, (polystyrene‐b‐poly(methyl methacrylate))3, (PS‐b‐PMMA)3, and (polystyrene‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol))3, (PS‐b‐PEG)3, are prepared using double‐click reactions: Huisgen and Diels–Alder, with a one‐pot technique. PS and PMMA blocks with α‐anthracene‐ω‐azide‐ and α‐maleimide‐end‐groups, respectively, are achieved using suitable initiators in ATRP of styrene and MMA, respectively. However, PEG obtained from a commercial source is reacted with 3‐acetyl‐N‐(2‐hydroxyethyl)‐7‐oxabicyclo[2.2.1]hept‐5‐ene‐2‐carboxamide (7) to give furan‐protected maleimide‐end‐functionalized PEG. Finally, PS/PMMA and PS/PEG blocks are linked efficiently with trialkyne functional linking agent 1,1,1‐tris[4‐(2‐propynyloxy)phenyl]‐ethane 2 in the presence of CuBr/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) at 120 °C for 48 h to give two samples of 3‐arm star‐block copolymers. The results of the peak splitting using a Gaussian deconvolution of the obtained GPC traces for (PS‐b‐PMMA)3 and (PS‐b‐PEG)3 displayed that the yields of target 3‐arm star‐block copolymers were found to be 88 and 82%, respectively. © Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Copper‐catalyzed controlled/living radical polymerization (LRP) of styrene (St) was conducted using the silica gel‐supported CuCl2/N,N,N′,N′,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (SG‐CuCl2/PMDETA) complex as catalyst at 110 °C in the presence of a definite amount of air. This novel approach is based on in situ generation and regeneration of Cu(I) via electron transfer reaction between phenols and Cu(II). Sodium phenoxide or p‐methoxyphenol was used as a reducing agent of Cu(II) complexes in LRP. The number–average molecular weight, Mn,GPC, increases linearly with monomer conversion and agrees well with the theoretical values up to 85% conversion The molecular weight distribution, Mw/Mn, decreases as the conversion increases and reaches values below 1.2. The catalyst was recovered in aerobic condition and reused in copper‐catalyzed LRP of St. For the second run, the number–average molecular weights increased with monomer conversion and the polydispersities decreased as the polymerization proceeded and reached to the value <1.3 at 81% conversion. The recycled catalyst retained 90% of its original activity in the subsequent polymerization. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 77–87, 2006  相似文献

The synthesis and molecular characterization of a series of conformationally asymmetric polystyrene‐block‐poly(1,3‐cyclohexadiene) (PS‐b‐PCHD) diblock copolymers (PCHD: ~90% 1,4 and ~10% 1,2), by sequential anionic copolymerization high vacuum techniques, is reported. A wide range of volume fractions (0.27 ≤ ?PS ≤ 0.91) was studied by transmission electron microscopy and small‐angle X‐ray scattering in order to explore in detail the microphase separation behavior of these flexible/semiflexible diblock copolymers. Unusual morphologies, consisting of PCHD core(PCHD‐1,4)–shell(PCHD‐1,2) cylinders in PS matrix and three‐phase (PS, PCHD‐1,4, PCHD‐1,2) four‐layer lamellae, were observed suggesting that the chain stiffness of the PCHD block and the strong dependence of the interaction parameter χ on the PCHD microstructures are important factors for the formation of this unusual microphase separation behavior in PS‐b‐PCHD diblock copolymers. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 4μ‐A2B2 star‐shaped copolymers contained polystyrene (PS), poly(isoprene) (PI), poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) or poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) arms were synthesized by a combination of Glaser coupling with living anionic polymerization (LAP) and ring‐opening polymerization (ROP). Firstly, the functionalized PS or PI with an alkyne group and a protected hydroxyl group at the same end were synthesized by LAP and then modified by propargyl bromide. Subsequently, the macro‐initiator PS or PI with two active hydroxyl groups at the junction point were synthesized by Glaser coupling in the presence of pyridine/CuBr/N,N,N ′,N ″,N ″‐penta‐methyl diethylenetri‐amine (PMDETA) system and followed by hydrolysis of protected hydroxyl groups. Poly[N‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐N,N‐dibutylamine hydrochloride] trithiocarbonate, which contains the reactive trithiocarbonate group and the appending surface‐active groups, is used as both surfactant and macromolecular reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (macro‐RAFT) agent in batch emulsion polymerization of styrene. Under the conditions at high monomer content of ~20 wt % and with the molecular weight of the macro‐RAFT agent ranging from 4.0 to 15.0 kg/mol, well‐controlled batch emulsion RAFT polymerization initiated by the hydrophilic 2‐2′‐azobis(2‐methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride is achieved. The polymerization leads to formation of nano‐sized colloids of the poly[N‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐N,N‐dibutylamine hydrochloride]‐b‐ polystyrene‐b‐poly[N‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐N,N‐dibutylamine hydrochloride] triblock copolymer. The colloids generally have core‐shell structure, in which the hydrophilic block forms the shell and the hydrophobic block forms the core. The molecular weight of the triblock copolymer linearly increases with increase in the monomer conversion, and the values are well‐consistent with the theoretical ones. The molecular weight polydispersity index of the triblock copolymer is below 1.2 at most cases of polymerization. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

The graft copolymers composed of “Y”‐shaped polystyrene‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide)2 (PS‐b‐PEO2) as side chains and hyperbranched poly(glycerol) (HPG) as core were synthesized by a combination of “click” chemistry and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) via “graft from” and “graft onto” strategies. Firstly, macroinitiators HPG‐Br were obtained by esterification of hydroxyl groups on HPG with bromoisobutyryl bromide, and then by “graft from” strategy, graft copolymers HPG‐g‐(PS‐Br) were synthesized by ATRP of St and further HPG‐g‐(PS‐N3) were prepared by azidation with NaN3. Then, the precursors (Bz‐PEO)2‐alkyne with a single alkyne group at the junction point and an inert benzyl group at each end was synthesized by sequentially ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of EO using 3‐[(1‐ethoxyethyl)‐ethoxyethyl]‐1,2‐propanediol (EEPD) and diphenylmethylpotassium (DPMK) as coinitiator, termination of living polymeric species by benzyl bromide, recovery of protected hydroxyl groups by HCl and modification by propargyl bromide. Finally, the “click” chemistry was conducted between HPG‐g‐(PS‐N3) and (Bz‐PEO)2‐alkyne in the presence of N,N,N′,N″,N”‐pentamethyl diethylenetriamine (PMDETA)/CuBr system by “graft onto” strategy, and the graft copolymers were characterized by SEC, 1H NMR and FTIR in details. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(perfluorooctyl‐ethylenoxymethylstyrene) (PFDS) and poly(1,1,2,2‐tetrahydroperfluorodecyl acrylate) (PFDA) homopolymers as well as poly(styrene)‐b‐poly(perfluorooctyl‐ethylenoxymethylstyrene) (PS‐b‐PFDS) and poly(styrene)‐b‐poly(1,1,2,2‐tetrahydroperfluorodecyl acrylate) acrylate) (PS‐b‐PFDA) block copolymers of various chain lengths were synthesized by nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization in the presence of either 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy free radical (TEMPO) in the case of FDS monomer or Ntert‐butyl‐N‐(1‐diethylphosphono‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl)‐N‐oxyl (DEPN) in the case of the FDA monomer. The molar composition of the block copolymers was determined by elemental analysis and proton NMR while the blocky structure was checked by SEC analysis in trifluorotoluene. Block copolymers PS‐b‐PFDS (3.6K/60K) and PS‐b‐PFDA (3.7K/43K) were soluble in neat CO2 at moderate pressure and temperature, indicating the formation of micelles. Similar block copolymers with a longer PS block such as PS‐b‐PFDA (9.5K/49K), corresponding to a lower CO2‐philic/CO2‐phobic balance, were insoluble in neat CO2 but could be solubilized in the presence of styrene as a cosolvent. Additionally, surface and bulk properties of PS‐b‐PFDA were investigated, indicating the same surface tension as for the PFDA homopolymer (γLV = 10.3 mN/m) and a bulk nanostructured morphology. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
