In this paper we introduce binary knapsack problems where the objective function is nonlinear, and investigate their Lagrangean and continuous relaxations. Some of our results generalize previously known theorems concerning linear and quadratic knapsack problems. We investigate in particular the case in which the objective function is supermodular. Under this hypothesis, although the problem remains NP-hard, we show that its Lagrangean dual and its continuous relaxation can be solved in polynomial time. We also comment on the complexity of recognizing supermodular functions. The particular case in which the knapsack constraint is of the cardinality type is also addressed and some properties of its optimal value as a function of the right hand side are derived.Work done while the authors were visiting Rutgers University.  相似文献

We propose relaxation heuristics for the problem of maximum profit assignment of n tasks to m agents (n > m), such that each task is assigned to only one agent subject to capacity constraints on the agents. Using Lagrangian or surrogate relaxation, the heuristics perform a subgradient search obtaining feasible solutions. Relaxation considers a vector of multipliers for the capacity constraints. The resolution of the Lagrangian is then immediate. For the surrogate, the resulting problem is a multiple choice knapsack that is again relaxed for continuous values of the variables, and solved in polynomial time. Relaxation multipliers are used with an improved heuristic of Martello and Toth or a new constructive heuristic to find good feasible solutions. Six heuristics are tested with problems of the literature and random generated problems. Best results are less than 0.5% from the optimal, with reasonable computational times for an AT/386 computer. It seems promising even for problems with correlated coefficients.  相似文献

Two heuristics for the 0–1 multidimensional knapsack problem (MKP) are presented. The first one uses surrogate relaxation, and the relaxed problem is solved via a modified dynamic-programming algorithm. The heuristics provides a feasible solution for (MKP). The second one combines a limited-branch-and-cut-procedure with the previous approach, and tries to improve the bound obtained by exploring some nodes that have been rejected by the modified dynamic-programming algorithm. Computational experiences show that our approaches give better results than the existing heuristics, and thus permit one to obtain a smaller gap between the solution provided and an optimal solution.  相似文献

This paper considers a general class of continuous, nonlinear, and nonseparable knapsack problems, special cases of which arise in numerous operations and financial contexts. We develop important properties of optimal solutions for this problem class, based on the properties of a closely related class of linear programs. Using these properties, we provide a solution method that runs in polynomial time in the number of decision variables, while also depending on the time required to solve a particular one-dimensional optimization problem. Thus, for the many applications in which this one-dimensional function is reasonably well behaved (e.g., unimodal), the resulting algorithm runs in polynomial time. We next develop a related solution approach to a class of continuous, nonlinear, and nonseparable multiple-choice knapsack problems. This algorithm runs in polynomial time in both the number of variables and the number of variants per item, while again dependent on the complexity of the same one-dimensional optimization problem as for the knapsack problem. Computational testing demonstrates the power of the proposed algorithms over a commercial global optimization software package.  相似文献

Quadratic knapsack problem has a central role in integer and nonlinear optimization, which has been intensively studied due to its immediate applications in many fields and theoretical reasons. Although quadratic knapsack problem can be solved using traditional nonlinear optimization methods, specialized algorithms are much faster and more reliable than the nonlinear programming solvers. In this paper, we study a mixed linear and quadratic knapsack with a convex separable objective function subject to a single linear constraint and box constraints. We investigate the structural properties of the studied problem, and develop a simple method for solving the continuous version of the problem based on bi-section search, and then we present heuristics for solving the integer version of the problem. Numerical experiments are conducted to show the effectiveness of the proposed solution methods by comparing our methods with some state of the art linear and quadratic convex solvers.  相似文献

Lagrangean techniques have been widely applied to the uncapacitated plant location problem, and in some cases they have proven to be successfull even when capacitated problems with additional constraints are taken into account. In our paper we study the application of these techniques to the capacitated plant location problem when the model considered is a pure integer one. Several lagrangean decompositions are considered and for some of them heuristic algorithms have been designed to solve the resulting lagrangean subproblems, the heuristics consisting of a two phase procedure. The first (location phase) defines a set of multipliers from the analysis of the dual LP relaxation, and makes a choice of the plants considering the resulting subproblems as a particular case of the general assignment problems. Several heuristics have been studied for this second phase, based either on a decomposition of knapsack type subproblems through a definition of a set of penalties, or of looking into the duality gap and trying to reduce it. Discrete DC programming with convex extensible functions is studied. A natural approach for this problem is a continuous relaxation that extends the problem to a continuous domain and applies the algorithm in continuous DC programming. By employing a special form of continuous relaxation, which is named “lin-vex extension,” the produced optimal solution of the extended continuous relaxation coincides with the solution of the original discrete problem. The proposed method is demonstrated for the degree-concentrated spanning tree problem, the unfair flow problem, and the correlated knapsack problem.  相似文献

First, this paper deals with lagrangean heuristics for the 0-1 bidimensional knapsack problem. A projected subgradient algorithm is performed for solving a lagrangean dual of the problem, to improve the convergence of the classical subgradient algorithm. Secondly, a local search is introduced to improve the lower bound on the value of the biknapsack produced by lagrangean heuristics. Thirdly, a variable fixing phase is embedded in the process. Finally, the sequence of 0-1 one-dimensional knapsack instances obtained from the algorithm are solved by using reoptimization techniques in order to reduce the total computational time effort. We consider the problem of obtaining integer solutions to a minmax linear programming problem. Although this general problem is NP-complete, it is shown that a restricted version of this problem can be solved in polynomial time. For this restricted class of problems two polynomial time algorithms are suggested, one of which is strongly polynomial whenever its continuous analogue and an associated linear programming problem can be solved by a strongly polynomial algorithm. Our algorithms can also be used to obtain integer solutions for the minmax transportation problem with an inequality budget constraint. The equality constrained version of this problem is shown to be NP-complete. We also provide some new insights into the solution procedures for the continuous minmax linear programming problem.  相似文献

Knapsack problems with setups find their application in many concrete industrial and financial problems. Moreover, they also arise as subproblems in a Dantzig–Wolfe decomposition approach to more complex combinatorial optimization problems, where they need to be solved repeatedly and therefore efficiently. Here, we consider the multiple-class integer knapsack problem with setups. Items are partitioned into classes whose use implies a setup cost and associated capacity consumption. Item weights are assumed to be a multiple of their class weight. The total weight of selected items and setups is bounded. The objective is to maximize the difference between the profits of selected items and the fixed costs incurred for setting-up classes. A special case is the bounded integer knapsack problem with setups where each class holds a single item and its continuous version where a fraction of an item can be selected while incurring a full setup. The paper shows the extent to which classical results for the knapsack problem can be generalized to these variants with setups. In particular, an extension of the branch-and-bound algorithm of Horowitz and Sahni is developed for problems with positive setup costs. Our direct approach is compared experimentally with the approach proposed in the literature consisting in converting the problem into a multiple choice knapsack with pseudo-polynomial size.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a new heuristic framework, called Kernel Search, to solve the complex problem of portfolio selection with real features. The method is based on the identification of a restricted set of promising securities (kernel) and on the exact solution of the MILP problem on this set. The continuous relaxation of the problem solved on the complete set of available securities is used to identify the initial kernel and a sequence of integer problems are then solved to identify further securities to insert into the kernel. We analyze the behavior of several heuristic algorithms as implementations of the Kernel Search framework for the solution of the analyzed problem. The proposed heuristics are very effective and quite efficient. The Kernel Search has the advantage of being general and thus easily applicable to a variety of combinatorial problems.  相似文献

 A dynamic knapsack set is a natural generalization of the 0-1 knapsack set with a continuous variable studied recently. For dynamic knapsack sets a large family of facet-defining inequalities, called dynamic knapsack inequalities, are derived by fixing variables to one and then lifting. Surprisingly such inequalities have the simultaneous lifting property, and for small instances provide a significant proportion of all the facet-defining inequalities. We then consider single-item capacitated lot-sizing problems, and propose the joint study of three related sets. The first models the discrete lot-sizing problem, the second the continuous lot-sizing problem with Wagner-Whitin costs, and the third the continuous lot-sizing problem with arbitrary costs. The first set that arises is precisely a dynamic knapsack set, the second an intersection of dynamic knapsack sets, and the unrestricted problem can be viewed as both a relaxation and a restriction of the second. It follows that the dynamic knapsack inequalities and their generalizations provide strong valid inequalities for all three sets. Some limited computation results are reported as an initial test of the effectiveness of these inequalities on capacitated lot-sizing problems. The constrained compartmentalized knapsack problem can be seen as an extension of the constrained knapsack problem. However, the items are grouped into different classes so that the overall knapsack has to be divided into compartments, and each compartment is loaded with items from the same class. Moreover, building a compartment incurs a fixed cost and a fixed loss of the capacity in the original knapsack, and the compartments are lower and upper bounded. The objective is to maximize the total value of the items loaded in the overall knapsack minus the cost of the compartments. This problem has been formulated as an integer non-linear program, and in this paper, we reformulate the non-linear model as an integer linear master problem with a large number of variables. Some heuristics based on the solution of the restricted master problem are investigated. A new and more compact integer linear model is also presented, which can be solved by a branch-and-bound commercial solver that found most of the optimal solutions for the constrained compartmentalized knapsack problem. On the other hand, heuristics provide good solutions with low computational effort.  相似文献

 The bounded multiple-class binary knapsack problem is a variant of the knapsack problem where the items are partitioned into classes and the item weights in each class are a multiple of a class weight. Thus, each item has an associated multiplicity. The constraints consists of an upper bound on the total item weight that can be selected and upper bounds on the total multiplicity of items that can be selected in each class. The objective is to maximize the sum of the profits associated with the selected items. This problem arises as a sub-problem in a column generation approach to the cutting stock problem. A special case of this model, where item profits are restricted to be multiples of a class profit, corresponds to the problem obtained by transforming an integer knapsack problem into a 0-1 form. However, the transformation proposed here does not involve a duplication of solutions as the standard transformation typically does. The paper shows that the LP-relaxation of this model can be solved by a greedy algorithm in linear time, a result that extends those of Dantzig (1957) and Balas and Zemel (1980) for the 0-1 knapsack problem. Hence, one can derive exact algorithms for the multi-class binary knapsack problem by adapting existing algorithms for the 0-1 knapsack problem. Computational results are reported that compare solving a bounded integer knapsack problem by transforming it into a standard binary knapsack problem versus using the multiple-class model as a 0-1 form. The ordinary knapsack problem is to find the optimal combination of items to be packed in a knapsack under a single constraint on the total allowable resources, where all coefficients in the objective function and in the constraint are constant.In this paper, a generalized knapsack problem with coefficients depending on variable parameters is proposed and discussed. Developing an effective branch and bound algorithm for this problem, the concept of relaxation and the efficiency function introduced here will play important roles. Furthermore, a relation between the algorithm and the dynamic programming approach is discussed, and subsequently it will be shown that the ordinary 0–1 knapsack problem, the linear programming knapsack problem and the single constrained linear programming problem with upper-bounded variables are special cases of the interested problem. Finally, practical applications of the problem and its computational experiences will be shown.  相似文献

This article is a survey about recent developments in the area of test sets of families of linear integer programs. Test sets are finite subsets of the integer lattice that allow to improve any given feasible non-optimal point of an integer program by one element in the set. There are various possible ways of defining test sets depending on the view that one takes: theGraver test set is naturally derived from a study of the integral vectors in cones; theScarf test set (neighbors of the origin) is strongly connected to the study of lattice point free convex bodies; the so-calledreduced Gröbner basis of an integer program is obtained from a study of generators of polynomial ideals. This explains why the study of test sets connects various branches of mathematics. We introduce in this paper these three kinds of test sets and discuss relations between them. We also illustrate on various examples such as the minimum cost flow problem, the knapsack problem and the matroid optimization problem how these test sets may be interpreted combinatorially. From the viewpoint of integer programming a major interest in test sets is their relation to the augmentation problem. This is discussed here in detail. In particular, we derive a complexity result of the augmentation problem, we discuss an algorithm for solving the augmentation problem by computing the Graver test set and show that, in the special case of an integer knapsack problem with 3 coefficients, the augmentation problem can be solved in polynomial time.Supported by a Gerhard-Hess-Forschungsförderpreis of the German Science Foundation (DFG).  相似文献

We consider minimax optimization problems where each term in the objective function is a continuous, strictly decreasing function of a single variable and the constraints are linear. We develop relaxation-based algorithms to solve such problems. At each iteration, a relaxed minimax problem is solved, providing either an optimal solution or a better lower bound. We develop a general methodology for such relaxation schemes for the minimax optimization problem. The feasibility tests and formulation of subsequent relaxed problems can be done by using Phase I of the Simplex method and the Farkas multipliers provided by the final Simplex tableau when the corresponding problem is infeasible. Such relaxation-based algorithms are particularly attractive when the minimax optimization problem exhibits additional structure. We explore special structures for which the relaxed problem is formulated as a minimax problem with knapsack type constraints; efficient algorithms exist to solve such problems. The relaxation schemes are also adapted to solve certain resource allocation problems with substitutable resources. This paper studies a non-preemptive infinite-horizon scheduling problem with a single server and a fixed set of recurring jobs. Each job is characterized by two given positive numbers: job duration and maximum allowable time between the job completion and its next start. We show that for a feasible problem there exists a periodic schedule. We also provide necessary conditions for the feasibility, formulate an algorithm based on dynamic programming, and, since this problem is NP-hard, formulate and study heuristic algorithms. In particular, by applying the theory of Markov Decision Process, we establish natural necessary conditions for feasibility and develop heuristics, called frequency based algorithms, that outperform standard scheduling heuristics.  相似文献

One of the classical optimization models for image segmentation is the well known Markov Random Fields (MRF) model. This model is a discrete optimization problem, which is shown here to formulate many continuous models used in image segmentation. In spite of the presence of MRF in the literature, the dominant perception has been that the model is not effective for image segmentation. We show here that the reason for the non-effectiveness is due to the lack of access to the optimal solution. Instead of solving optimally, heuristics have been engaged. Those heuristic methods cannot guarantee the quality of the solution nor the running time of the algorithm. Worse still, heuristics do not link directly the input functions and parameters to the output thus obscuring what would be ideal choices of parameters and functions which are to be selected by users in each particular application context.We describe here how MRF can model and solve efficiently several known continuous models for image segmentation and describe briefly a very efficient polynomial time algorithm, which is provably fastest possible, to solve optimally the MRF problem. The MRF algorithm is enhanced here compared to the algorithm in Hochbaum (2001) by allowing the set of assigned labels to be any discrete set. Other enhancements include dynamic features that permit adjustments to the input parameters and solves optimally for these changes with minimal computation time. Several new theoretical results on the properties of the algorithm are proved here and are demonstrated for images in the context of medical and biological imaging. An interactive implementation tool for MRF is described, and its performance and flexibility in practice are demonstrated via computational experiments.We conclude that many continuous models common in image segmentation have discrete analogs to various special cases of MRF and as such are solved optimally and efficiently, rather than with the use of continuous techniques, such as PDE methods, which restrict the type of functions used and furthermore, can only guarantee convergence to a local minimum.  相似文献

In this paper we consider nonlinear integer optimization problems. Nonlinear integer programming has mainly been studied for special classes, such as convex and concave objective functions and polyhedral constraints. In this paper we follow an other approach which is not based on convexity or concavity. Studying geometric properties of the level sets and the feasible region, we identify cases in which an integer minimizer of a nonlinear program can be found by rounding (up or down) the coordinates of a solution to its continuous relaxation. We call this property rounding property. If it is satisfied, it enables us (for fixed dimension) to solve an integer programming problem in the same time complexity as its continuous relaxation. We also investigate the strong rounding property which allows rounding a solution to the continuous relaxation to the next integer solution and in turn yields that the integer version can be solved in the same time complexity as its continuous relaxation for arbitrary dimensions.  相似文献
