We consider a multi-item two-echelon spare part inventory system in which the central warehouse operates under an (nQ,?R) policy and the local warehouses implement order-up-to S policy, each facing a compound Poisson demand. The objective is to find the policy parameters minimizing expected system-wide inventory holding and fixed ordering costs subject to an aggregate mean response time constraint at each warehouse. In this paper, we propose four alternative approximations for the steady state performance of the system; and extend a heuristic and a lower bound proposed under Poisson demand assumption to the compound Poisson setting. In a computational study, we show that the performances of the approximations, the heuristic, and the lower bound are quite satisfactory; and the relative cost saving of setting an aggregate service level rather than individually for each part is quite high.  相似文献

Stock Rationing in a Continuous Review Two-Echelon Inventory Model   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In this paper we consider a 1-warehouse, N-retailer inventory system where demand occurs at all locations. We introduce an inventory model which allows us to set different service levels for retailers and direct customer demand at the warehouse. For each retailer a critical level is defined, such that a retailer replenishment order is delivered from warehouse stock if and only if the stock level exceeds this critical level. It is assumed that retailer replenishment orders, which are not satisfied from warehouse stock, are delivered directly from the outside supplier, instead of being backlogged. We present an analytical upper bound on the total cost of the system, and develop a heuristic method to optimize the policy parameters. Numerical experiments indicate that our technique provides a very close approximation of the exact cost. Also, we show that differentiating among the retailers and direct customer demand can yield significant cost reductions.  相似文献

We consider an inventory model for spare parts with two stockpoints, providing repairable parts for a critical component of advanced technical systems. As downtime costs for these systems are expensive, ready–for–use spare parts are kept in stock to be able to quickly respond to a breakdown of a system. We allow for lateral transshipments of parts between the stockpoints upon a demand arrival. Each stockpoint faces demands from multiple demand classes. We are interested in the optimal lateral transshipment policy. There are three ways in which a demand can by satisfied: from own stock, via a lateral transshipment, or via an emergency procedure. Using stochastic dynamic programming, we characterize and prove the structure of the optimal policy, that is, the policy for satisfying the demands which minimizes the average operating costs of the system. This optimal policy is a threshold type policy, with state-dependent thresholds at each stockpoint for every demand class. We show a partial ordering in these thresholds in the demand classes. In addition, we derive conditions under which the so-called hold back and complete pooling policies are optimal, two policies that are often assumed in the literature. Furthermore, we study several model extensions which fit in the same modeling framework.  相似文献

We consider a model to allocate stock levels at warehouses in a service parts logistics network. The network is a two-echelon distribution system with one central warehouse with infinite capacity and a number of local warehouses, each facing Poisson demands from geographically dispersed customers. Each local warehouse uses a potentially different base stock policy. The warehouses are collectively required to satisfy time-based service targets: Certain percentages of overall demand need to be satisfied from facilities within specified time windows. These service levels not only depend on the distance between customers and the warehouses, but also depend on the part availabilities at the warehouses. Moreover, the warehouses share their inventory as a way to increase achieved service levels, i.e., when a local warehouse is out of stock, demand is satisfied with an emergency shipment from another close-by warehouse. Observing that the problem of finding minimum-cost stock levels is an integer non-linear program, we develop an implicit enumeration-based method which adapts an existing inventory sharing model from the literature, prioritizes the warehouses for emergency shipments, and makes use of a lower bound. The results show that the proposed inventory sharing strategy results in considerable cost reduction when compared to the no-sharing case and the method is quite efficient for the considered test problems.  相似文献

We consider a time-based inventory control policy for a two-level supply chain with one warehouse and multiple retailers in this paper. Let the warehouse order in a fixed base replenishment interval. The retailers are required to order in intervals that are integer-ratio multiples of the base replenishment interval at the warehouse. The warehouse and the retailers each adopt an order-up-to policy, i.e. order the needed stock at a review point to raise the inventory position to a fixed order-up-to level. It is assumed that the retailers face independent Poisson demand processes and no transshipments between them are allowed. The contribution of the study is threefold. First, we assume that when facing a shortage the warehouse allocates the remaining stock to the retailers optimally to minimize system cost in the last minute before delivery and provide an approach to evaluate the exact system cost. Second, we characterize the structural properties and develop an exact optimal solution for the inventory control system. Finally, we demonstrate that the last minute optimal warehouse stock allocation rule we adopt dominates the virtual allocation rule in which warehouse stock is allocated to meet retailer demand on a first-come first-served basis with significant cost benefits. Moreover, the proposed time-based inventory control policy can perform equally well or better than the commonly used stock-based batch-ordering policy for distribution systems with multiple retailers.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the stock rationing problem of a single-item make-to-stock production/inventory system with multiple demand classes. Demand arrives as a Poisson process with a randomly distributed batch size. It is assumed that the batch demand can be partially satisfied. The facility can produce a batch up to a certain capacity at the same time. Production time follows an exponential distribution. In this paper we show how to exactly evaluate holding and shortage costs for a two-level inventory system with one warehouse and N different retailers. Lead-times (transportation times) are constant, and the retailers face different Poisson demand processes. All facilities apply continuous review (R, Q)-policies. This paper considers a single-item, two-echelon, continuous-review inventory model. A number of retailers have their stock replenished from a central warehouse. The warehouse in turn replenishes stock from an external supplier. The demand processes on the retailers are independent Poisson. Demand not met at a retailer is lost. The order quantity from each retailer on the warehouse and from the warehouse on the supplier takes the same fixed value Q, an exogenous variable determined by packaging and handling constraints. Retailer i follows a (QRi) control policy. The warehouse operates an (SQ, (S − 1)Q) policy, with non-negative integer S. If the warehouse is in stock then the lead time for retailer i is the fixed transportation time Li from the warehouse to that retailer. Otherwise retailer orders are met, after a delay, on a first-come first-served basis. The lead time on a warehouse order is fixed. Two further assumptions are made: that each retailer may only have one order outstanding at any time and that the transportation time from the warehouse to a retailer is not less than the warehouse lead time. The performance measures of interest are the average total stock in the system and the fraction of demand met in the retailers. Procedures for determining these performance measures and optimising the behaviour of the system are developed.  相似文献

We consider the inventory control problem of an independent supplier in a continuous review system. The supplier faces demand from a single customer who in turn faces Poisson demand and follows a continuous review (R, Q) policy. If no information about the inventory levels at the customer is available, reviews and ordering are usually carried out by the supplier only at points in time when a customer demand occurs. It is common to apply an installation stock reorder point policy. However, as the demand faced by the supplier is not Markovian, this policy can be improved by allowing placement of orders at any point in time. We develop a time delay policy for the supplier, wherein the supplier waits until time t after occurrence of the customer demand to place his next order. If the next customer demand occurs before this time delay, then the supplier places an order immediately. We develop an algorithm to determine the optimal time delay policy. We then evaluate the value of information about the customer’s inventory level. Our numerical study shows that if the supplier were to use the optimal time delay policy instead of the installation stock policy then the value of the customer’s inventory information is not very significant.  相似文献

This paper considers complementarity and substitutability among locations for a two-stage transshipment problem with locations being factories, warehouses, and demand centers. A direct generalization of properties known for the transportation problem would be that any two locations of different types are complements and any two locations of the same type are substitutes. Examples show that these properties need not hold for pairs of locations that include at least one warehouse. An algorithm of Nagelhout and Thompson (European J. Operational Res. 6 (1981) 149–161) for locating warehouses is based on the incorrect supposition that any two warehouses are substitutes, and an example shows that their algorithm need not generate an optimal solution as claimed. For pairs of locations that do not include a warehouse, complementarity and substitutability properties hold just as in the transportation problem.  相似文献

This paper analyzes a Mixed Continuous-Periodic Review One-Warehouse, N-Retailer inventory system for a single, consumable item. In this system, the warehouse holds stock and the retailers experience independent, stationary field demand. Each retailer follows a continuous review (Q, r) policy. However, the warehouse reviews each retailer according to a review interval T. We discuss the motivation for this warehouse policy and show how its impact on the retailers can be modeled with an (nQ, r, T) policy at the retailers and the warehouse. Then we present an approximate analytical model to predict the performance of such a system under different operating conditions. An interesting aspect of the model is the estimation of warehouse demand variance via a closed form expression derived using renewal theory. We compare the approximate model with a simulation model to test its accuracy. The comparison indicates that the approximate model predicts quite accurately in high fill rate ranges (retailer fill rates of 90% and more). Finally, we propose several extensions to this research.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider a single product, periodic review, stochastic demand inventory problem where backorders are allowed and penalized via fixed and proportional backorder costs simultaneously. Fixed backorder cost associates a one-shot penalty with stockout situations whereas proportional backorder cost corresponds to a penalty for each demanded but yet waiting to be satisfied item. We discuss the optimality of a myopic base-stock policy for the infinite horizon case. Critical number of the infinite horizon myopic policy, i.e., the base-stock level, is denoted by S. If the initial inventory is below S then the optimal policy is myopic in general, i.e., regardless of the values of model parameters and demand density. Otherwise, the sufficient condition for a myopic optimum requires some restrictions on demand density or parameter values. However, this sufficient condition is not very restrictive, in the sense that it holds immediately for Erlang demand density family. We also show that the value of S can be computed easily for the case of Erlang demand. This special case is important since most real-life demand densities with coefficient of variation not exceeding unity can well be represented by an Erlang density. Thus, the myopic policy may be considered as an approximate solution, if the exact policy is intractable. Finally, we comment on a generalization of this study for the case of phase-type demands, and identify some related research problems which utilize the results presented here.  相似文献

We consider a two-level supply chain with a number of identical, independent ‘retailers’ at the lower echelon and a single supplier at the upper echelon controlled by continuous review inventory policy (RQ). Each retailer experiences Poisson demand with constant transportation times. We assume constant lead time for replenishing supplier orders from an external warehouse to the supplier and unsatisfied retailer orders are backordered in the supplier. We assume that the unsatisfied demand is partially backordered in the identical retailers. The partially backordering policy is implemented in the identical retailers using an explicit control parameter ‘b’ which limits the maximum number of backorders allowed to be accumulated during the lead time. We develop an approximate cost function to find optimal reorder points for given batch sizes in all installations, the optimal value of b in the identical retailers and the related accuracy is assessed through simulation.  相似文献

In almost all literature on inventory models with lost sales and periodic reviews the lead time is assumed to be either an integer multiple of or less than the review period. In a lot of practical settings such restrictions are not satisfied. We develop new models allowing constant lead times of any length when demand is compound Poisson. Besides an optimal policy, we consider pure and restricted base-stock policies under new lead time and cost circumstances. Based on our numerical results we conclude that the latter policy, which imposes a restriction on the maximum order size, performs almost as well as the optimal policy. We also propose an approximation procedure to determine the base-stock levels for both policies with closed-form expressions.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the inventory system of an online retailer with compound Poisson demand. The retailer normally replenishes its inventory according to a continuous review (nQR) policy with a constant lead time. Usually demands that cannot be satisfied immediately are backordered. We also assume that the customers will accept a reasonable waiting time after they have placed their orders because of the purchasing convenience of the online system. This means that a sufficiently short waiting time incurs no shortage costs. We call this allowed waiting time “committed service time”. After this committed service time, if the retailer is still in shortage, the customer demand must either be satisfied with an emergency supply that takes no time (which is financially equivalent to a lost sale) or continue to be backordered with a time-dependent backorder cost. The committed service time gives an online retailer a buffer period to handle excess demands. Based on real-time information concerning the outstanding orders of an online retailer and the waiting times of its customers, we provide a decision rule for emergency orders that minimizes the expected costs under the assumption that no further emergency orders will occur. This decision rule is then used repeatedly as a heuristic. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the model, together with a discussion of the conditions under which the real-time decision rule provides considerable cost savings compared to traditional systems.  相似文献

A model is proposed for the simultaneous location of plants and warehouses among a given set of possible locations in order to satisfy a given demand at minimum cost. The demand of each customer may be satisfied directly from a plant or through a warehouse. The model also applies to the design of a distribution network with two levels of warehouses. A branch-and-bound algorithm, which generalizes previous work by Efroymson and Ray and others, is presented, computational experience is reported on.  相似文献

This paper considers the problem of allocating warehouse inventory to retailers where retailer orders and the replenishment of warehouse inventory occur periodically on a fixed schedule. We assume that the warehouse and the retailers have the opportunity to exchange demand information through Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). At the warehouse level, for instance, the available information on the retailer's demand may be utilized in determining the shipment quantities needed to meet the desired service level to the retailers. Unlike similar models focusing primarily on optimizing systems wide performance measures, in this paper we focus on the service level furnished to the retailers by the warehouse. To this end, three different allocation policies are considered: static, myopic, and dynamic rules characterizing the impact of available demand information on the resulting service levels. Numerical illustrations exemplify the allocation rules considered. An interesting though counter intuitive observation is that the existence of additional demand information cannot, a prior, be assumed superior.  相似文献

This paper considers a single-echelon inventory system with a warehouse facing compound Poisson customer demand. Normally the warehouse replenishes from an outside supplier according to a continuous review reorder point policy. However, it is also possible to use emergency orders. Such orders incur additional costs but have a much shorter lead time. We consider standard holding and backorder costs as well as ordering costs. A heuristic decision rule for triggering emergency orders is suggested. The decision rule minimizes the expected costs under the assumption that there is only a single possibility for an emergency replenishment, but the rule is used repeatedly as a heuristic. Given a certain reorder point policy for normal replenishments, our decision rule will always reduce the expected costs. A simulation study illustrates that the suggested technique performs well under different conditions.  相似文献

We would like to concurrently route every demand on a single path from s to the corresponding terminal without violating the capacities. There are several interesting and important variations of this unsplittable flow problem. If the necessary cut condition is satisfied, we show how to compute an unsplittable flow satisfying the demands such that the total flow through any edge exceeds its capacity by at most the maximum demand. For graphs in which all capacities are at least the maximum demand, we therefore obtain an unsplittable flow with congestion at most 2, and this result is best possible. Furthermore, we show that all demands can be routed unsplittably in 5 rounds, i.e., all demands can be collectively satisfied by the union of 5 unsplittable flows. Finally, we show that 22.6% of the total demand can be satisfied unsplittably. These results are extended to the case when the cut condition is not necessarily satisfied. We derive a 2-approximation algorithm for congestion, a 5-approximation algorithm for the number of rounds and a -approximation algorithm for the maximum routable demand. In this paper, we consider a two warehouse inventory model, an owned one (OW) and a rented one (RW). Inventory deteriorates in the two warehouses at different constant rates, demand rate is a general ramp-type function of time and shortages are partially backlogged at a constant rate. Existence and uniqueness of the optimal solution is discussed. An algorithm is developed to obtain the overall optimal replenishment policy, which would enable the manager to decide upon the feasibility of renting a warehouse. The dynamics of the model and application of the algorithm are demonstrated through numerical examples. Sensitivity analysis is conducted with respect to model parameters and some important observations are drawn.  相似文献
