Over the past years, new technologies and specially online social networks have penetrated into the world’s population at an accelerated pace. In this paper we analyze collected data from the web application Twitter, in order to describe the structure and dynamics of the emergent social networks, based on complexity science. We focused on a Venezuelan protest that took place exclusively by Twitter during December, 2010. We found a community structure with highly connected hubs and three different kinds of user behavior that determine the information flow dynamics. We noticed that even though online social networks appear to be a pure social environment, traditional media still holds loads of influence inside the network.  相似文献

Previous research has examined how various behaviors scale in cities in relation to their population sizes. Behavior related to innovation and productivity has been found to increase per capita as the size of the city increases, a phenomenon known as superlinear scaling. Criminal behavior has also been found to scale superlinearly. Here we examine a variety of prosocial behaviors (e.g., voting and organ donation), which also would be presumed to be categorized into a single class of scaling with population. We find that, unlike productivity and innovation, prosocial behaviors do not scale in a unified manner. We argue how this might be due to the nature of interactions that are distinct for different prosocial behaviors.  相似文献

Of particular importance for public health is how to understand strategic vaccination behavior in social networks. Social learning is a central aspect of human behavior, and it thus shapes vaccination individuals’ decision-making. Here, we study two simple models to address the impact of the more rational decision-making of individuals on voluntary vaccination. In the first model, individuals are endowed with memory capacity for their past experiences of dealing with vaccination. In addition to their current payoffs, they also take account of the historical payoffs that are discounted by a memory-decaying factor. They use such overall payoffs (weighing the current payoffs and historical payoffs) to reassess their vaccination strategies. Those who have higher overall payoffs are more likely imitated by their social neighbors. In the second model, individuals do not blindly learn the strategies of neighbors; they also combine the fraction of infection in the past epidemic season. If the fraction of infection surpasses the perceived risk threshold, individuals will increase the probability of taking vaccination. Otherwise, they will decrease the probability of taking vaccination. Then we use evolutionary game theory to study the vaccination behavior of people during an epidemiological process. To do this, we propose a two-stage model: individuals make vaccination decisions during a yearly vaccination campaign, followed by an epidemic season. This forms a feedback loop between the vaccination decisions of individuals and their health outcomes, and thus payoffs. We find that the two more rational decision-making models have nontrivial impacts on the vaccination behavior of individuals, and, as a result, on the final fraction of infection. Our results highlight that, from an individual’s viewpoint, the decisions are optimal and more rational. However, from the social viewpoint, the strategies of individuals can give rise to distinct outcomes. Namely, the rational behavior of individuals plays a ‘double-edged-sword’ role on the social effects.  相似文献

Many social networks, apart from displaying scale-free characteristics observed in some instances, possess another remarkable feature that distinguishes them from those that appear in biological and technological context—assortativity. However, little or no attention has been payed to the mechanism of assortativity in modeling these networks. Inspired by individuals’ altruistic behavior in sociology, we develop a model with a different growth mechanism called “altruistic attachment”, which can reproduce not only the power law degree distribution but degree correlations. We study in detail the statistical properties of our network model, which we also demonstrate striking differences with the BA model, and can portray real social networks more precisely.  相似文献

A methodology was developed to analyze relation-based systems evolving in time by using the fundamental concepts of thermodynamics. The behavior of such systems can be tracked from the scattering matrix which is actually a network of directed vectors (or pathways) connecting subsequent values, which characterize an event, such as the index values in stock markets. A system behaves in a rigid (elastic) way to an external effect and resists permanent deformation, or it behaves in a viscous (or soft) way and deforms in an irreversible way. It was shown in the past that a formula derived using the slope of paths gives a measure about the extent of viscoelastic behavior of relation-based systems Gündüz (2009) [5] Gündüz and Gündüz (2010) [6]. In this research the ‘work’ associated with ‘elastic’ component, and ‘heat’ associated with ‘viscous’ component were discussed and elaborated. In a simple two subsequent pathway system in a scattering diagram the first vector represents ‘the cause’ and the second ‘the effect’. By using work and heat energy relations that involve force and also storage and loss modulus terms, respectively, one can calculate the energy involved in relation-based systems. The modulus values can be found from the parallel and vertical components of the second vector with respect to the first vector. Once work-like and heat-like terms were determined the internal energy is also easily found from their summation. The parallel and vertical components can also be used to calculate the magnitude of torque and torque energy in the system. Three cases, (i) the behavior of the NASDAQ-100 index, (ii) a social revolt, and (iii) the structure of a melody were analyzed for their ‘work-like’, ‘heat-like’, and ‘torque-like’ energies in the course of their evolution. NASDAQ-100 exhibits highly dissipative behavior, and its work terms are very small but heat terms are of large magnitude. Its internal energy highly fluctuates in time. In the social revolt studied work and heat terms are of comparable magnitude. The melody depicts highly organized structure, and usually has larger work terms than heat terms, but at some intervals heat terms burst out and attain very large magnitudes. Torque terms reach high values when the system is recovering from a minimum value.  相似文献

Unlike other natural network systems, assortativity can be observed in most human social networks, although it has been reported that a social dilemma situation represented by the prisoner’s dilemma favors dissortativity to enhance cooperation. We established a new coevolutionary model for both agents’ strategy and network topology, where teaching and learning agents coexist. Remarkably, this model enables agents’ enhancing cooperation more than a learners-only model on a time-frozen scale-free network and produces an underlying assortative network with a fair degree of power-law distribution. The model may imply how and why assortative networks are adaptive in human society.  相似文献

Most papers about the evolutionary game on graph assume the statistic network structure. However, in the real world, social interaction could change the relationship among people. And the change of social structure will also affect people’s strategies. We build a coevolution model of prisoner’s dilemma game and network structure to study the dynamic interaction in the real world. Differing from other coevolution models, players rewire their network connections according to the density of cooperation and other players’ payoffs. We use a parameter α to control the effect of payoff in the process of rewiring. Based on the asynchronous update rule and Monte Carlo simulation, we find that, when players prefer to rewire their links to those who are richer, the temptation can increase the cooperation density.  相似文献

Behavior patterns of online users and the effect on information filtering   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Understanding the structure and evolution of web-based user-item bipartite networks is an important task since they play a fundamental role in online information filtering. In this paper, we focus on investigating the patterns of online users’ behavior and the effect on recommendation process. Empirical analysis on the e-commercial systems show that users’ taste preferences are heterogeneous in general but their interests for niche items are highly clustered. Additionally, recommendation processes are investigated on both the real networks and the reshuffled networks in which real users’ behavior patterns can be gradually destroyed. We find that the performance of personalized recommendation methods is strongly related to the real network structure. Detailed study on each item shows that most hot items are accurately recommended and their recommendation accuracy is robust to the reshuffling process. However, the accuracy for niche items is relatively low and drops significantly after removing users’ behavior patterns. Our work is also meaningful in practical sense since it reveals an effective direction to improve the accuracy and the robustness of the existing recommender systems.  相似文献

The well-known Ising model used in statistical physics was adapted to a social dynamics context to simulate the adoption of a technological innovation. The model explicitly combines (a) an individual’s perception of the advantages of an innovation and (b) social influence from members of the decision-maker’s social network. The micro-level adoption dynamics are embedded into an agent-based model that allows exploration of macro-level patterns of technology diffusion throughout systems with different configurations (number and distributions of early adopters, social network topologies). In the present work we carry out many numerical simulations. We find that when the gap between the individual’s perception of the options is high, the adoption speed increases if the dispersion of early adopters grows. Another test was based on changing the network topology by means of stochastic connections to a common opinion reference (hub), which resulted in an increment in the adoption speed. Finally, we performed a simulation of competition between options for both regular and small world networks.  相似文献

Threshold models try to explain the consequences of social influence like the spread of fads and opinions. Along with models of epidemics, they constitute a major theoretical framework of social spreading processes. In threshold models on static networks, an individual changes her state if a certain fraction of her neighbors has done the same. When there are strong correlations in the temporal aspects of contact patterns, it is useful to represent the system as a temporal network. In such a system, not only contacts but also the time of the contacts are represented explicitly. In many cases, bursty temporal patterns slow down disease spreading. However, as we will see, this is not a universal truth for threshold models. In this work we propose an extension of Watts’s classic threshold model to temporal networks. We do this by assuming that an agent is influenced by contacts which lie a certain time into the past. I.e., the individuals are affected by contacts within a time window. In addition to thresholds in the fraction of contacts, we also investigate the number of contacts within the time window as a basis for influence. To elucidate the model’s behavior, we run the model on real and randomized empirical contact datasets.  相似文献

Mobile phone datasets allow for the analysis of human behavior on an unprecedented scale. The social network, temporal dynamics and mobile behavior of mobile phone users have often been analyzed independently from each other using mobile phone datasets. In this article, we explore the connections between various features of human behavior extracted from a large mobile phone dataset. Our observations are based on the analysis of communication data of 100,000 anonymized and randomly chosen individuals in a dataset of communications in Portugal. We show that clustering and principal component analysis allow for a significant dimension reduction with limited loss of information. The most important features are related to geographical location. In particular, we observe that most people spend most of their time at only a few locations. With the help of clustering methods, we then robustly identify home and office locations and compare the results with official census data. Finally, we analyze the geographic spread of users’ frequent locations and show that commuting distances can be reasonably well explained by a gravity model.  相似文献

In this paper, we study cooperative behavior among mobile agents; the agents have heterogenous view radii and they play the prisoner’s dilemma game with those being within their vision fields. It is found that the cooperation level is remarkably promoted when the heterogeneity of view radii is considered, and the degree distribution of the system is investigated to explain this interesting phenomenon. Moreover, we report that the cooperative behavior is best favored by low density, moderate view radius, and small moving speed. Our findings may be helpful in understanding cooperative behavior in natural and social systems consisting of mobile agents.  相似文献

Modeling students’ classroom behaviors can help educators and researchers better understand these behaviors, and further guide students toward well behaviors. Conformity refers to the tendency to change individual behavior to match group behavior. Through observation and experience, educators have accumulated much linguistic knowledge for describing and understanding students’ conformity behavior and influence. This paper presents a fuzzy logic approach for modeling participants’ classroom behaviors. The simulation results about two observed college classes show that the constructed fuzzy logic system is congruent with the observed participants’ classroom behaviors. Existing findings, as well as new findings, are verified through further simulation and analysis. The proposed fuzzy logic system helps educators quantitatively analyze and understand students’ conformity behavior in classroom.  相似文献

We present the stochastic nonlinear-map model of vehicular traffic controlled by irregular signals. The signal’s interval, the split of signal, and the offset time changes irregularly from signal to signal on a roadway. We study the effect of irregularity on dynamical behavior of vehicular traffic through a sequence of traffic lights. The vehicle exhibits the very complex behavior with varying cycle time. When the strength of irregularity is small, the arrival time does not change with irregularity for some values of cycle time, while it changes for other values of cycle time. The region in which the arrival time changes is expanding with increasing irregularity’s strength. The region map (phase diagram) is shown in the cycle time-irregularity’s strength space.  相似文献

We propose a dynamic model for describing clustering behaviors on a cyclic game, in which the same species form a cluster to compete. The rates of consuming the prey depend not only on the individual competing ability vv, but also on the two interacting cluster’s sizes. The fragmentation and coagulation rates of the clusters are related to the cohesive strength among the individuals. A new parameter uu is introduced to indicate the uniting degree. We find that the probability distribution of the clustering sizes is almost a power law in a large regime specified by the two parameters, which reflects the scale-free behavior in complex systems. In addition, the exponential magnitudes are mostly in the range of real social systems. Our simulation shows that clustering promotes biodiversity. At steady state, the amounts about the three species evolve tempestuously with asymmetric period; the aggregations about big size’s clusters to compete are obvious and on–off intermittence.  相似文献

We introduce a stochastic win-stay-lose-shift (WSLS) mechanism into evolutionary Prisoner’s Dilemma on small-world networks. At each time step, after playing with all its immediate neighbors, each individual gets a score to evaluate its performance in the game. The score is a linear combination of an individual’s total payoff (i.e., individual gain from the group) and local contribution to its neighbors (i.e., individual donation to the group). If one’s actual score is not larger than its desired score aspiration, it switches current strategy to the opposite one with the probability depending on the difference between the two scores. Under this stochastic WSLS regime, we assume that each focal individual gains its fixed score aspiration under the condition of full cooperation in its neighborhood, and find that cooperation is significantly enhanced under some certain parameters of the model by studying the evolution of cooperation. We also explore the influences of different values of learning rate and intensity of deterministic switch on the evolution of cooperation. Simulation results show that cooperation level monotonically increases with the relative weight of the local contribution to the score. For much low intensity of deterministic switch, cooperation is to a large extent independent of learning rate, and full cooperation can be reached when relative weight is not less than 0.5. Otherwise, cooperation level is affected by the value of learning rate. Besides, we find that the cooperation level is not sensitive to the topological parameters. To explain these simulation results, we provide corresponding analytical results based on mean-field approximation, and find out that simulation results are in close agreement with the analytical ones. Our work may be helpful in understanding the cooperative behavior in social systems based on this stochastic WSLS mechanism.  相似文献

Situations of conflict giving rise to social dilemmas are widespread in society. One way of studying these important phenomena is by using simplified models of individual behavior under conflicting situations such as evolutionary game theory. Starting from the observation that individuals interact through networks of acquaintances, we study the evolution of cooperation on model and real social networks through well known paradigmatic games. Using a new payoff scheme which leaves replicator dynamics invariant, we find that cooperation is sustainable in such networks, even in the difficult case of the prisoner’s dilemma. The evolution and stability of cooperation implies the condensation of game strategies into the existing community structures of the social network in which clusters of cooperators survive thanks to their higher connectivity towards other fellow cooperators.  相似文献

Patterns of human activities have attracted increasing academic interests, since the quantitative understanding of human behavior is helpful to uncover the origins of many socioeconomic phenomena. This paper focuses on behaviors of Internet users. Six large-scale systems are studied in our experiments, including the movie-watching in Netflix and MovieLens, the transaction in Ebay, the bookmark-collecting in Delicious, and the posting in FreindFeed and Twitter. Empirical analysis reveals some common statistical features of online human behavior: (1) The total number of user’s actions, the user’s activity, and the interevent time all follow heavy-tailed distributions. (2) There exists a strongly positive correlation between user’s activity and the total number of user’s actions, and a significantly negative correlation between the user’s activity and the width of the interevent time distribution. We further study the rescaling method and show that this method could to some extent eliminate the different statistics among users caused by the different activities, yet the effectiveness depends on the data sets.  相似文献

In this study, we determined the degree of order for 22 Jackson Pollock paintings using the Hausdorff–Besicovitch fractal dimension. Based on the maximum value of each multi-fractal spectrum, the artworks were classified according to the year in which they were painted. It has been reported that Pollock’s paintings are fractal and that this feature was more evident in his later works. However, our results show that the fractal dimension of these paintings ranges among values close to two. We characterize this behavior as a fractal-order transition. Based on the study of disorder-order transition in physical systems, we interpreted the fractal-order transition via the dark paint strokes in Pollock’s paintings as structured lines that follow a power law measured by the fractal dimension. We determined self-similarity in specific paintings, thereby demonstrating an important dependence on the scale of observations. We also characterized the fractal spectrum for the painting entitled Teri’s Find. We obtained similar spectra for Teri’s Find and Number 5, thereby suggesting that the fractal dimension cannot be rejected completely as a quantitative parameter for authenticating these artworks.  相似文献
