This article provides a summary of the development of ionic liquids as stationary phases for gas chromatography beginning with early work on packed columns that established details of the retention mechanism and established working methods to characterize selectivity differences compared with molecular stationary phases through the modern development of multi-centered cation and cross-linked ionic liquids for high-temperature applications in capillary gas chromatography. Since there are many reviews on ionic liquids dealing with all aspects of their chemical and physical properties, the emphasis in this article is placed on the role of gas chromatography played in the design of ionic liquids of low melting point, high thermal stability, high viscosity, and variable selectivity for separations. Ionic liquids provide unprecedented opportunities for extending the selectivity range and temperature-operating range of columns for gas chromatography, an area of separation science that has otherwise been almost stagnant for over a decade.  相似文献

<正>One chloride-terminated ionic liquid(CTIL) and two hydroxyl-terminated ionic liquids(HTILs) were synthesized and used as stationary phases for capillary gas chromatography(CGC).Molecular interactions of these stationary phases were evaluated by Abraham solvation parameter model, indicating that the CTIL exhibits remarkably strong H-bond basicity and the HTILs possess both H-bond basicity and acidity. The molecular interactions were further confirmed by separation of a complex mixture consisting of ketones, aldehydes, esters, alcohols and aromatic compounds. It was found that the obtained solvation parameters correlate well with the chromatographic performances of the analytes in terms of elution order and resolution. The well correlated relationship between the solvation parameters and the selectivity of the CTIL and HTILs stationary phases is quite helpful in predicting and understanding the retention behaviors of different types of analytes on these stationary phases.  相似文献

Polycationic ionic liquids (ILs) are an attractive class of ILs with great potential applicability as gas chromatography stationary phases. A family of hexacationic imidazolium ILs derived from the cycloalkanol family was chemically first prepared in a straightforward manner and then applied for analytical separation purposes. Four tuneable engineering vectors, namely cation ring size structure, anion nature, spatial disposition of cycloalkanol substituents and O‐substitution, were considered as experimental parameters for the design of the desired ionic liquids. A total number of five new phases based on a common benzene core respectively exhibited column efficiencies around to 2500 plates/m, broad operating temperature ranges and also, even more importantly, good thermal stabilities (bleeding temperature between 260 and 365°C), finding variations in the selectivity and analytes elution orders depending on the IL structures. Their solvation characteristics were evaluated using the Abraham solvation parameter model, establishing clear correlations between their cation structure and retention capability with respect to certain analytes. The study of relationships between the ILs structure and solvation parameters gives us an idea of the IL stationary phase to be used for specific separations.  相似文献

Seven new functionalized polymerizable ionic liquids were chemically prepared, and later applied for the preparation of polymeric stationary phases in gas chromatography. These coated GC columns, which exhibited good thermal stabilities (240–300 °C) and very high efficiencies (3120–4200 plates/m), have been characterized using the Abraham solvation parameter model. The chromatographic behavior of these polymeric IL columns has been deeply studied observing excellent selectivities in the separation of many organic substances such as alkanes, ketones, alcohols, amines or esters in mixtures of polar and non polar solvents or fragrances. Remarkably, the challenging separation of xylene isomers has been possible using a bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide based imidazolium IL coated column as a gas chromatography stationary phase.  相似文献

Ionic liquids (ILs) are a class of ionic, nonmolecular solvents which remain in liquid state at temperatures below 100 °C. ILs possess a variety of properties including low to negligible vapor pressure, high thermal stability, miscibility with water or a variety of organic solvents, and variable viscosity. IL-modified silica as novel high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) stationary phases have attracted considerable attention for their differential behavior and low free-silanol activity. Indeed, around 21 surface-confined ionic liquids (SCIL) stationary phases have been developed in the last six years. Their chromatographic behavior has been studied, and, despite the presence of a positive charge on the stationary phase, they showed considerable promise for the separation of neutral solutes (not only basic analytes), when operated in reversed phase mode. This aspect points to the potential for truly multimodal stationary phases. This review attempts to summarize the state-of-the-art about SCIL phases including their preparation, chromatographic behavior, and analytical performance.  相似文献

<正>The present study describes guanidinium-based ionic liquids(GBILs) as stationary phases for capillary gas chromatography (CGC) and to the best of our knowledge,no related reports are available up to now.In this study,a hexaalkylguanidinium ionic liquid(DOTMG-NTf_2) was synthesized and coated statically onto capillary columns.Selectivity of the stationary phase was evaluated by separating Grob test mixture, test mixture, alcohols mixture, and fatty acid methyl esters mixture, and thermal stability was investigated as well. The present study demonstrates that GBILs as CGC stationary phases exhibit satisfactory selectivity and thermal stability and have a great potential as new candidates for CGC stationary phases.  相似文献

Due to the special performance of “dual nature” and synthetic flexibility, ionic liquids (ILs) have been an attractive research subject of stationary phases for gas chromatography (GC). In this work, a novel ionic liquid (IL) bonded polysiloxane ([PSOMIM][NTf2]) with anion of bis-trifluoromethanesulfonylimide (NTf2) was synthesized, and another one with chloride anion ([PSOMIM][Cl]) was also prepared for the purpose of comparison. The thermo-stability of the product was evaluated by thermogravimetric (TG) test and the result indicated that [PSOMIM][NTf2] did not decompose slightly until 380 °C. Then the solvation behaviors of the ILs were characterized using solvation parameter model. Subsequently, [PSOMIM][NTf2] and [PSOMIM][Cl] were used as stationary phases to prepare capillary columns for GC, respectively. The column efficiency of [PSOMIM][NTf2] column was 4776 plates/m (k = 3.64 ± 0.08, naphthalene), and that of the other one was 3170 plates/m (k = 2.84 ± 0.11, naphthalene). The selectivity of the novel stationary phases for analytes, including Grob reagent, aromatic positional isomers was further evaluated. Furthermore, the chromatograms of n-alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on [PSOMIM][NTf2] column were compared with that on [PSOMIM][Cl] column. [PSOMIM][NTf2] stationary phase also exerted good selectivity for fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and aromatic amines.  相似文献

We present the results of investigations on the possibility of the application of the asphaltene fraction isolated from the oxidized residue from vacuum distillation of crude oil as a stationary phase for gas chromatography. The results of the investigation revealed that the asphaltene stationary phases can find use for the separation of a wide range of volatile organic compounds. The experimental values of Rohrschneider/McReynolds constants characterize the asphaltenes as stationary phases of medium polarity and selectivity similar to commercially available phases based on alkyl phthalates. Isolation of asphaltenes from the material obtained under controlled process conditions allows the production of a stationary phase having reproducible sorption properties and chromatographic columns having the same selectivity. Unique selectivity and high thermal stability make asphaltenes attractive as a material for stationary phases for gas chromatography. A low production cost from a readily available raw material (oxidized petroleum bitumens) is an important economic factor in case of application of the asphaltene stationary phases for preparative and process separations.  相似文献

In recent years, room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) have proven to be of great interest to analytical chemists. One important development is the use of RTILs as highly thermally stable GLC stationary phases. To date, nearly all of the RTIL stationary phases have been nitrogen-based (ammonium, pyrrolidinium, imidazolium, etc.). In this work, eight new monocationic and three new dicationic phosphonium-based RTILs are used as gas–liquid chromatography (GLC) stationary phases. Inverse gas chromatography (GC) analyses are used to study the solvation properties of the phosphonium RTILs through a linear solvation energy model. This model describes the multiple solvation interactions that the phosphonium RTILs can undergo and is useful in understanding their properties. In addition, the phosphonium-based stationary phases are used to separate complex analyte mixtures by GLC. Results show that the small differences in the solvent properties of the phosphonium ILs compared with ammonium-based ILs will allow for different and unique separation selectivities. Also, the phosphonium-based stationary phases tend to be more thermally stable than nitrogen-based ILs, which is an advantage in many GC applications.  相似文献

Partition coefficients of organic compounds in four ionic liquids: 1-ethanol-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, 1-ethanol-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, 1,3-dimethylimidazolium dimethylphosphate and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium diethylphosphate were measured using inverse gas chromatography from 303.3 to 332.55 K. The influence of gas–liquid and gas–solid interfacial adsorption of different solutes on ionic liquids was also studied. Most of the polar solutes were retained largely by partition while light hydrocarbons were retained predominantly by interfacial adsorption on the ionic liquids studied in this work. The solvation characteristics of the ionic liquids were evaluated using the Abraham solvation parameter model.  相似文献

Ionic liquids are salts that are liquid at or near room temperature. Their wide liquid range, good thermal stability, and very low vapor pressure make them attractive for numerous applications. The general approach to creating ionic liquids is to employ a large, unreactive, low symmetry cation with and an anion that largely controls the physical and chemical properties. The most common cations used in ionic liquids are N-alkylpyridinium and N,N′-dialkylimidazolium. Another very effective cation for the creation of ionic liquids is tetraalkylphosphonium, [PR1R2R3R4]+. The alkyl groups, Rn, generally are large and not all the same. The halide salts of several phosphonium cations are available as starting materials for metathesis reactions used to prepare ionic liquids. The large phosphonium cations can combine with relatively large anions to make viscous but free flowing liquids with formula mass greater than 1000 g mol−1. Some other more massive salts are waxes and glasses. The synthesis and the physical, chemical, and optical properties of phosphonium-ionic liquids having anions with a wide range of masses were measured and are reported here.  相似文献

A polymeric ionic liquid (PIL) poly(1-vinyl-3-hexylimidazolium chloride) (poly(ViHIm+Cl)) was designed as a coating material for solid phase microextraction (SPME) to extract polar compounds including volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and alcohols. The extracted analytes were analyzed by using gas chromatography (GC) coupled with flame ionization detection (FID). Extraction parameters of the HS–SPME–GC–FID method, such as ionic strength, extraction temperature, pH and extraction time were optimized. Calibration studies were carried out under the optimized conditions to further evaluate the performance of the PIL-based SPME coating. For comparison purposes, the PIL poly(1-vinyl-3-hexylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide) (poly(ViHIm+NTf2)) was also used as the SPME coating to extract the same analytes. The results showed that the poly(ViHIm+Cl) PIL coating had higher selectivity towards more polar analytes due to the presence of the Cl anion which provides higher hydrogen bond basicity than the NTf2 anion. The limits of detection (LODs) determined by the designed poly(ViHIm+Cl) PIL coating ranged from 0.02 μg L−1 for octanoic acid and decanoic acid and 7.5 μg L−1 for 2-nitrophenol, with precision values (as relative standard deviation) lower than 14%. The observed performance of the poly(ViHIm+Cl) PIL coating was comparable to previously reported work in which commercial or novel materials were used as SPME coatings. The selectivity of the developed PIL coatings was also evaluated using heptane as the matrix solvent. This work demonstrates that the selectivity of PIL-based SPME coatings can be simply tuned by incorporating different counteranions to the sorbent coating.  相似文献

Mesomorphic biphenylcarboxylate esters were coupled via flexible aliphatic hydrocarbon spacers to a polysiloxane backbone. The influence of spacer length, percent mesomorphic substitution, and crosslinking of the stationary phase on liquid-crystalline transition temperatures and on chromatographic performance was investigated. Unique selectivity and good efficiency over a wide temperature range for gum and cross-linked liquid-crystalline phases were demonstrated by the separation of various isomeric polycyclic aromatic compounds.  相似文献

Summary The organic molten salt, 1-ethylpyridinium bromide, is suitable for use as a stationary phase in gas chromatography. It has a usable liquid temperature range of 110 to 160°C. It undergoes a single phase transition at 110°C which corresponds to the bulk melting point. Below the melting point the phase may be used as a selective adsorbent, although column efficiency and peak symmetry deteriorate as the temperature is lowered from the melting point. Above the melting point, ethylpyridinium bromide can be used to separate a wide variety of organic compounds retaining strongly those compounds possessing large dipole or hydrogen bonding functional groups.  相似文献

GC stationary phases composed of binary mixtures of two polymeric ionic liquids (PILs), namely, poly(1‐vinyl‐3‐hexylimidazolium) bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide (poly(ViHIm‐NTf2))/poly(1‐vinyl‐3‐hexylimidazolium) chloride (poly(ViHIm‐Cl)) and poly(1‐vinyl‐3‐hexadecylimidazolium) bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide (poly(ViHDIm‐NTf2))/poly(1‐vinyl‐3‐hexadecylimidazolium) chloride (poly(ViHDIm‐Cl)), were evaluated in terms of their on‐set bleed temperature and separation selectivity. A total of six neat or binary PIL stationary phases were characterized using the solvation parameter model to investigate the effects of the polymeric cation and anion and PIL composition on the system constants of the resulting stationary phases. The hydrogen bond basicity of the mixed poly(ViHIm‐NTf2)/poly(ViHIm‐Cl) stationary phases was enriched linearly with the increase in the poly(ViHIm‐Cl) content. Results revealed that tuning the composition of the stationary phase allowed for fine control of the retention factors and separation selectivity for alcohols and carboxylic acids as well as selected ketones, aldehydes, and aromatic compounds. A reversal of elution order was observed for particular classes of analytes when the weight percentage of the chloride‐based PIL was increased.  相似文献

<正>A guanidinium ionic liquid,N,N,N',N'-tetrahexyl-N",N"-dimethylguanidinium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonylimide(THDMGNTf_2), was synthesized and used as stationary phase for capillary gas chromatography. In comparison with imidazolium ionic liquid stationary phase, the present new stationary phase exhibits quite different selectivity and behaves more like a low polar stationary phase. The guanidinium ionic liquid of THDMG-NTf_2 exhibited better separation of Grab test mixture than imidazolium ionic liquid of 1-octyl-3-butylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonylimide(OBIM-NTf_2).Solvation parameter model was also used to evaluate the selectivity of THDMG-NTf_2.Additionally,essential oil of Magnolia biondii Pamp was analyzed to further evaluate the selectivity of THDMG-NTf_2 for a sample of complicated components.Satisfactory separation of the essential oil was achieved on a THDMG-NTf_2 column(10 m) while using a commercial column(30 m) as reference. The present study shows that the guanidinium ionic liquid possesses novel chromatographic selectivity and has great potential for wide applications.  相似文献

Summary Room temperature ionic liquids (RTIL) are molten salts with melting points well below room temperature. 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride is a typical example of such RTIL. It was used as a solvent to dissolve permethylated-β-cyclodextrin (BPM) and dimethylated-?cyclodextrin (BDM) to prepare stationary phases for capillary columns in gas chromatography for chiral separation. The RTIL containing columns were compared to commercial columns containing the same chiral selectors. A set of 64 chiral compounds separated by the commercial BPM column was tested on the RTIL BPM column. Only 21 were enantioresolved. Similarly, a set of 80 compounds separated by the commercial BDM column was passed on the RTIL BDM column with only 16 positive separations. It is proposed that the imidazolium ion pair could make an inclusion complex with the cyclodextrin cavity, blocking it for chiral recognition. All the chiral compounds recognized by the RTIL columns had their asymmetric carbon that was part of a ring structure. The retention factors of the derivatized solutes were lower on the RTIL columns than those obtained on the commercial equivalent column. The peak efficiencies obtained with the RTIL capillary were significantly higher than that obtained with the commercial column. These observations may contribute to the knowledge of the mechanism of cyclodextrin-based GC enantioselective separations.  相似文献
