Proper design of a birdcage coil plays a very important role in obtaining high-resolution small animal magnetic resonance imaging. The RF field homogeneity and the coil filling factor directly affect the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) and therefore limit the resolution. It has been shown that a conductive end-cap placed on one side of the coil can improve the RF field inhomogeneity near this area. This also contributes to an increase in the S/N by reducing the length of the RF coil. While this is true near the end-cap, the distal half of the coil still suffers from poor homogeneity and S/N. Consequently, such a shortfall may hinder small animal whole body imaging. In order to improve the coil performance for a larger imaging volume, we designed a new small animal birdcage RF coil by adding a detachable second end-cap to the open end. The performance of single end and double end RF coils was compared experimentally. The results indicate that the double end-cap can provide superior uniformity along the long axis of the coil. Furthermore, if one wishes to obtain the same homogeneity within a given volume, a double end-cap would have less than half of the length of the single end-cap coil leading to a superior S/N performance.  相似文献

Unilateral magnetic resonance techniques, where magnet and radio frequency (RF) coil are placed on one side of the sample, can provide valuable information about a sample which otherwise cannot be accommodated in conventional high spectral resolution magnetic resonance systems. A unilateral magnetic resonance imaging approach utilizing the stray field from a disc magnet and a butterfly geometry RF coil is described. The coil excites spins in a volume centered around an arc through the sample. Translating the RF coil relative to the magnet and recording the signal at each translational location creates a projection of the signal in a tomographic slice through the sample. Rotating the RF coil relative to the sample and repeating the translation creates projections through the sample at different angles. Backprojecting this information yields an image. A proof of concept device operating on this principle at 12.4 MHz was constructed and characterized. Projections through three phantoms are presented with a 1.2-4 cm field of view, thickness of 102 microm, and at a distance of 3mm from the RF coil and 14 mm from the magnet. The edge spread function (ESF) was measured resulting in a 4mm full width at half maximum (FWHM) line spread function (LSF) estimation using a Gaussian model. An example of one reconstructed image is presented.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique is widely used to capture the images of the liquid items inside the human body. The radio-frequency (RF) coil is one of the important modules present inside an MRI system, which plays a major role in image quality. In this work, a microstrip-based high-pass RF birdcage coil is proposed for 1.5 T MRI. The cylindrical-shaped birdcage coil consists of 12 microstrip radiating elements and tuning capacitors to achieve a resonance at 63.85 MHz. The coil is made up of 10 mm polytetrafluoroethylene substrate coated by a conducting transmission line of desired length and width. A finite difference time domain simulation is carried out to analyze the return loss (S11), magnetic field homogeneity and Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) parameters of the RF coil. The SAR values of the proposed microstrip-based 1.5 T birdcage coil was compared with 3 T RF birdcage coil. The simulation results indicate the proposed birdcage coil structure gives optimal values of S11, magnetic field homogeneity and SAR.  相似文献

In clinical magnetic resonance imaging(MRI),the design of the radiofrequency(RF) coil is very important. For certain applications, the appropriate coil can produce an improved image quality. However,it is difficult to achieve a uniform B1 field and a high signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) simultaneously. In this article,we design an interventional transmitter-and-receiver RF coil for cerebral surgery. This coil adopts a disassembly structure that can be assembled and disassembled repeatedly on the cerebral surgery gantry to reduce the amount of interference from the MRI during surgery. The simulation results and the imaging experiments demonstrate that this coil can produce a uniform RF field,a high SNR,and a large imaging range to meet the requirements of the cerebral surgery.  相似文献

Purpose

To investigate intracranial microvascular images with transceiver radio-frequency (RF) coils at ultra-high field 7 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Materials and methods

We designed several types of RF coils for the study of 7 T magnetic resonance angiography and analyzed quantitatively each coil's performance in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) profiles to evaluate the usefulness of RF coils for microvascular imaging applications. We also obtained the microvascular images with different resolutions and parallel imaging technique.

Results

The overlapped 6-channel (ch) transceiver coil exhibited the highest performance for angiographic imaging. Although other multi-channel coils, such as 4- or 8-ch, were also suitable for fast imaging, these coils performed poorly in homogeneity or SNR for angiographic imaging. Furthermore, the 8-ch coil was poor in SNR at the center of the brain, while it had the highest SNR at the periphery.

Conclusion

The present study has demonstrated that the overlapped 6-ch coil with large-size loop coils provided the best performance for microvascular imaging or angiography with the ultra-high-field 7 T MRI, mainly because of its long penetration depth together with high SNR.

The monopole coil and loop coil have orthogonal radiofrequency (RF) fields and thus are intrinsically decoupled electromagnetically if they are laid out appropriately. In this study, we proposed a hybrid monopole/loop technique which could combine the advantages of both loop arrays and monopole arrays. To investigate this technique, a hybrid RF coil array containing four monopole channels and four loop channels was developed for human head magnetic resonance (MR) imaging at 7 T. In vivo MR imaging and g-factor results using monopole-only channels, loop-only channels and all channels of the hybrid array were acquired and evaluated. Compared with the monopole-only and loop-only channels, the proposed hybrid array has the higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and better parallel imaging performance. Sufficient electromagnetic decoupling and diverse RF magnetic field (B1) distributions of monopole channels and loop channels may contribute to this performance improvement. From experimental results, the hybrid monopole/loop array has low g-factor and excellent SNR at both periphery and center of the brain, which is valuable for human head imaging at ultrahigh fields.  相似文献

The advantages of open, vertical-field, magnetic resonance-guided, focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS) are attractive. The inverse technique using the bi-boundary conditions is proposed to design a uterine-oriented intraoperative RF coil with an ultrasound aperture for the MRgFUS system. In the current proposed scheme, the desired magnetic field of the RF coil was set to completely overlap the target organ. The current density distribution on the RF coil surface, accounting for the expected magnetic field, was solved using the inverse technique. The stream function was available through the ‘discretization’ of the current density distribution on the RF coil surface. The coil windings were obtained from the contour plot of the stream function. As a modification of previous designs, the bi-boundary conditions are proposed in the inverse technique for the existence of the ultrasound aperture. Based on the obtained coil windings, a prototype coil was constructed. MR imaging of the phantom and the human body was performed to show the efficacy of the prototype coil. The results of temperature measurement using the prototype coil in a 0.4-T MR system were satisfactory. The performance of the prototype coil improved compared with the previously reported design.  相似文献

Applications of low-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems (<0.3 T) are limited due to the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) being lower than that provided by systems based on superconductive magnets (≥1.5 T). Therefore, the design of radiofrequency (RF) coils for low-field MRI requires careful consideration as significant gains in SNR can be achieved with the proper design of the RF coil. This article describes an analytical method for the optimization of solenoidal coils. Coil and sample losses are analyzed to provide maximum SNR and optimum B1 field homogeneity. The calculations are performed for solenoidal coils optimized for the human head at 0.2 T, but the method could also be applied to any solenoidal coil for imaging other anatomical regions at low field. Several coils were constructed to compare experimental and theoretical results. A head magnetic resonance image obtained at 0.2 T with the optimum design is presented.  相似文献

While magnetic resonance images essentially contain a map of the both circularly polarized components of the RF transverse magnetic fields (B(1) field), the thermal heat and electromagnetic power deposition is generated by the associated electric fields. Measurement of electric field distributions/intensities across a sample yields an indirect indication of possible cause of heating within the sample and potentially enables the detection of "hot spots," which can be present within inhomogeneous radiofrequency (RF) fields, such as the case with magnetic resonance imaging at high field strength. As a result, establishing a valid technique for direct measurements of the electric field and its correlation, obtained using computational electromagnetics, is essential in assessing (1) the safety of the RF coil designs and (2) the validity of the calculations. In this work, a probe was built and used to measure the transverse electric field (E(1) field) distributions within an empty 8 T (tuned to 340 MHz) RF head coil and within a saline water phantom loaded in the same coil. The measured E(1) field distributions were favorably compared to the distributions obtained utilizing a finite difference time domain in-house package.  相似文献

Sodium magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is a promising technique for detecting changes of proteoglycan (PG) content in cartilage associated with knee osteoarthritis. Despite its potential clinical benefit, sodium MR imaging in vivo is challenging because of intrinsically low sodium concentration and low MR signal sensitivity. Some of the challenges in sodium MR imaging may be eliminated by the use of a high-sensitivity radiofrequency (RF) coil, specifically, a dual-tuned (DT) proton/sodium RF coil which facilitates the co-registration of sodium and proton MR images and the evaluation of both physiochemical and structural properties of knee cartilage. Nevertheless, implementation of a DT proton/sodium RF coil is technically difficult because of the coupling effect between the coil elements (particularly at high field) and the required compact design with improved coil sensitivity. In this study, we applied a multitransceiver RF coil design to develop a DT proton/sodium coil for knee cartilage imaging at 3 T. With the new design, the size of the coil was minimized, and a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was achieved. DT coil exhibited high levels of reflection S11 (~-21 dB) and transmission coefficient S12 (~-19 dB) for both the proton and sodium coils. High SNR (range 27-38) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) (range 15-21) were achieved in sodium MR imaging of knee cartilage in vivo at 3-mm(3) isotropic resolution. This DT coil performance was comparable to that measured using a sodium-only birdcage coil (SNR of 28 and CNR of 20). Clinical evaluation of the DT coil on four normal subjects demonstrated a consistent acquisition of high-resolution proton images and measurement of relative sodium concentrations of knee cartilages without repositioning of the subjects during the same MR scanning session.  相似文献

Non-human primates (NHPs) are vital models for neuroscience research. These animals have been widely used in behavioral, electrophysiological, molecular, and more recently, multimodal neuroimaging and neuro-engineering studies. Several RF coil arrays have been designed for functional, high-resolution brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), but few have been designed to accommodate multimodal devices. In the present study, a 16-channel array coil was constructed for brain imaging of macaques at 3 Tesla (3 T). To construct this coil, a close-fitting helmet-shaped form was designed to host 16 coil loops for whole-brain coverage. This assembly is mountable onto stereotaxic head frame bars, and the coil functions while the monkey is in the sphinx position with a clear line of vision of stimuli presented from outside of the MRI system. In addition, 4 openings were allocated in the coil housing, allowing multimodal devices to directly access visual cortical regions such as V1-V4 and MT. Coil performance was evaluated in an anesthetized macaque by quantifying and comparing signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), noise correlations, and g-factor maps to a vendor-supplied human pediatric coil frequently used for NHP MRI. The result from in vivo experiments showed that the NHP coil was well-decoupled, had higher SNRs in cortical regions, and improved data acquisition acceleration capability compared with a vendor-supplied human pediatric coil that has been frequently used in macaque MRI studies. Furthermore, whole-brain anatomic imaging, diffusion tensor imaging and functional brain imaging have also been conducted: the details of brain anatomical structure, such as cerebellum and brainstem, can be clearly visualized in T2-SPACE images; b0 SNR calculated from b0 maps was higher than the human pediatric coil in all regions of interest (ROIs); the time-course SNR (tSNR) map calculated for GRE-EPI images demonstrates that the presented coil can be used for high-resolution functional imaging at 3 T.  相似文献

Deterioration of radiofrequency (RF) inhomogeneity with increasing static magnetic field in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of the fundamental challenges preventing their clinical rendition and posing safety hazards. Variation in RF coil designs could help redistribute RF energy absorption over the imaged object. This work is intended to determine experimentally the difference in RF heating produced within a human head phantom by in situ measurement of RF inhomogeneity as a function of coil design utilized at 8 T. The heating patterns of 1/4 wavelength (long) and 1/8 wavelength 11-cm (short) transverse electromagnetic (TEM) coils loaded with a homogeneous human head phantom at 340 MHz were evaluated. In addition, different transmit/receive (T/R) configurations were used in search for the possibility of "hot-spot" formation. Fluoroptic thermometry was used to measure temperatures in multiple positions in a head phantom made of ground turkey breast for RF powers corresponding to a specific absorption rate (SAR) of 4.0 W/kg for 10 min. Numerical simulations were performed to study the general RF power deposition patterns in phantoms at 340 MHz including the effects of field polarization. The temperature increases varied from 0 to 0.8 degrees C for the long RF coil, while the short RF coil produced a maximum temperature change of 0.5 degrees C. Similar to ultra high-field electromagnetic simulations, these measurements revealed low peripheral and high deep-tissue heating at 8 T. The findings indicated that the largest temperature changes for both cases were less than 1 degrees C. While these results showed an increase in localized heating due to RF pulses at 8 T, they highlight that RF inhomogeneity could be redistributed using different RF coil designs through which the hot spots could be made cooler.  相似文献

We obtained a magnetic resonance image of 1 microm resolution and 75 microm(3) voxel volume for a phantom filled with hydrocarbon oil within an hour at 14.1 T. For this work, a specially designed probe with a high sensitivity RF coil and gradient coils generating over 1000 G/cm was built. The optimal pulse sequence was analyzed in consideration of the bandwidth, diffusion coefficients, and T(1) and T(2) relaxations of the medium. The system was applied to the in vivo imaging of a geranium leaf stem to get the images of 2 microm resolution and 200 microm(3) voxel volume.  相似文献

Study of human pathologies and acquisition of anatomical images without any surgical intervention inside human body is possible because of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which is the keystone technique to characterize the psychology and neurochemistry of human body. However, for clinical trials, the study and cure of human diseases are followed by medical investigations of different animal anatomies. By employing different imaging techniques to animal anatomical models during their clinical trials yielded in exceptional image acquisition without any surgical invasion in the model, which resulted in noninvasive technique as compared to surgical invasion and opened the possibility to study human pathologies more precisely. This work exploits the notable properties of unique combination of multi-circular hybridized surface coils which can be used as hybridized magnetic metamaterial hat (HMMH). HMMH not only strengthens the uniformity of radio frequency (RF) rotational symmetry around its axis but also improves the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for rat’s brain imaging at 7-T MRI. We analyzed a periodic array of strongly coupled circular copper coils attached on circular coil shaped printed circuit board (PCB) substrate. In the design, some copper coils were inspired by the slot cavity loaded with parametric elements (capacitor and inductor). In addition, coils in the form of HMMH exploited the advantages of the hybrid modes which exhibited better and deeper RF sensitivity into the region of interest (ROI) as compared to single loop RF coil by exciting two Eigen modes simultaneously which resulted in homogenized magnetic field (B-field) and enhanced SNR at ROI. At resonance, the value of relative negative permeability, μ r  = ?7 + j11 was achieved at 300 MHz for 7-T MRI. Furthermore, image quality at ROI was optimized by varying rat’s head position under magnetic resonance (MR) coil of MRI apparatus and in the presence or absence of HMMH. Design configuration and circuit model analysis were also done.  相似文献

Quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies of small samples such as a single cell or cell clusters require application of radiofrequency (RF) coils that provide homogenous B1 field distribution and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).We present a novel design of an MRI RF volume microcoil based on a microstrip structure. The coil consists of two parallel microstrip elements conducting RF currents in the opposite directions, thus creating homogenous RF field within the space between the microstrips. The construction of the microcoil is simple, efficient and cost-effective.Theoretical calculations and finite element method simulations were used to optimize the coil geometry to achieve optimal B1 and SNR distributions within the sample and predict parameters of the coil. The theoretical calculations were confirmed with MR images of a 1-mm-diameter capillary and a plant obtained with the double microstrip RF microcoil at 11.7 T. The in-plane resolution of MR images was 24 μm×24 μm.  相似文献
