Radiological impacts of phosphate rocks mining and manufacture could be significant due to the elevated radioactivity contents of the naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM), such as 238U series, 232Th series and 40K, in some phosphate deposits. Over the last decades, the land reclamation and agriculture activities in Saudi Arabia and other countries have been widely expanded. Therefore, the usage of chemical fertilizers is increased. Selected phosphate fertilizers samples were collected and the specific activities of NORM were measured using a gamma ray spectrometer based on a hyper pure germanium detector and alpha spectrometer based on surface barrier detector. The obtained results show remarkable wide variations in the radioactivity contents of the different phosphate fertilizer samples. The mean (ranges) of specific activities for 226Ra, 210Po, 232Th and 40K, and radium equivalent activity are 75 (3–283), 25 (0.5–110), 23 (2–74), 2818 (9–6501) Bq/kg and 283 (7–589) Bq/kg, respectively. Based on dose calculations, the increment of the public radiation exposure due to the regular agricultural usage of phosphate fertilizers is negligible. Its average value 1 m above the ground is about 0.12 nGy/h where the world average value due to the NORM in soil is 51 nGy/h. Direct radiation exposures of the farmers due to phosphate fertilizers application was not considered in our study.  相似文献

The activity concentrations of gamma emitting radionuclides were measured in surface soil samples from the Thrace region. 232Th, 238U, 226Ra, 40K and 137Cs activities and physico-chemical parameters of the soil samples were determined in samples collected from 73 sampling stations. Radionuclide concentrations measured were compared with those found in the samples from other locations of Turkey and from different countries. The average activity concentrations of 232Th, 238U, 226Ra, 40K and 137Cs were found to be 24.71 ± 8.79, 22.30 ± 7.93, 32.09±12.44, 509.00±160.05, 32.74±29.24 Bq kg?1, respectively. The mean value of the annual effective dose equivalent from the outdoor terrestrial gamma radiation was calculated as 57.2 μ Sv.  相似文献

The activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K have been measured by gamma spectroscopy in samples of soil collected from the different zones of around Huelva (Spain). The average activity concentrations of 226Ra (Bq kg?1) in the active phosphogypsum (PG) stacks, unrestored and restored zones were 647, 573 and 83 respectively. The corresponding values for 232Th and 40K (Bq kg?1) were 8, 10 and 25 and 33, 47 and 225 respectively. As a measure of radiation hazard to the occupational workers and public, the Ra equivalent activities, representative level index and dose rates due to natural radionuclides at 1 m above the ground surface were estimated. The average of absorbed dose rates due to 226Ra, 232Th and 40K (nGy/h) from active PG stacks, unrestored and restored zones are 284, 255 and 55.The calculated external γ-radiation average dose (mSv/y) received by the workers of the phosphogypsum piles are estimated to be 0.293, 0.262 and 0.057 which is far below the international agreed dose limit of 20 mSv/y (ICRP-60, 1990) for workers. Also, the radiation dose to a member of the public resulting from the use of PG is negligible compared to the average annual effective dose from natural sources (2.4 mSv/y).  相似文献

The analysis of natural radioactivity from 238U, 232Th and 40K in 357 soil samples collected from the province of Kütahya was carried out using a NaI(Tl) gamma-ray spectroscopy system at the Nuclear Physics Research Laboratory, Dumlup?nar University, Kütahya, Turkey. The specific activities of 238U, 232Th and 40K in the soil samples were evaluated. From the activity concentrations of 238U, 232Th and 40K, the total absorbed outdoor gamma-ray dose rates and the corresponding annual effective dose rates were determined. The corresponding values of the external and internal hazard indices of all the soil samples were also calculated. The external gamma-ray dose rate at 1 m above the ground was directly measured at each collected soil sample location. The results obtained in this study were compared within the limits of values obtained in other cities of Turkey, those in other countries. Radiological maps of Kütahya Province were constructed from the results of this study.  相似文献

The activity concentration of natural (238U, 232Th, and 40K) and artificial (137Cs) radionuclides was determined in 50 samples (obtained from the same station) from various species of mushrooms and soil collected from the Middle Black Sea Region (Turkey). The activities of 238U, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs were found as 84 ± 16, 45 ± 14, 570 ± 28, and 64 ± 6?Bq?kg–1 (dry weight), respectively, in the mushroom samples and as 51?±?6, 41?±?6, 201?±?11, and 44?±?4?Bq?kg–1, respectively, in the soil samples for the entire area of study. The results of all radionuclide activity measurements, except those of 238U and 232Th in the mushroom samples, are consistent with previous studies. In the soil samples, the mean values of 238U and 232Th are above the world mean, and the activity mean of 40K is below the world mean. Finally, the activity estimation was made with both the soil and mushroom samples for unmeasured points within the study area by using the ordinary kriging method. Radiological distribution maps were generated.  相似文献

Determination of the natural radioactivity has been carried out, by means of gamma-ray spectrometry system, in surface soil samples collected from various geological formations in urban areas of the northern highlands of Jordan. These highlands, extending from Yarmouk River in the north to Wadi Wala in the south, form the agriculturally important regions of Jordan. Soils of the study region, at which about 70% of the total population of the country are living, mainly originated from limestones that are locally used in construction materials, making the evaluation of environmental radioactivity and estimating the current radiation hazards to the population an interesting issue. The total average concentrations of radionuclides 226Ra, 238U, 232Th, and 40K were 42.5, 49.9, 26.7, and 291.1 Bq kg−1, respectively. Correlations made among these radionuclides prove the existence of secular equilibrium in the investigated soils. The total average absorbed dose rate in the study areas is found to be 51.5 nGy h−1, whereas the annual effective dose equivalent has an average value of 63.2 μSv y−1. The external and internal hazard indices, the radium equivalent activity, and the annual gonadal dose equivalent associated with the investigated soils do not exceed the permissible limits except for soils originated from phosphate rocks. Moreover, the radio-elemental concentrations of uranium, thorium and potassium, evaluated for the various geological features in the study areas were calculated to indicate whether relative depletion/enrichment of radioisotopes had occurred. The results of the present study were discussed and compared with internationally recommended values.  相似文献

This study was aimed at providing the baseline data of terrestrial gamma dose rates and natural radioactivity to assess the corresponding health risk in the ambient environment of the Pahang State. Terrestrial gamma radiation (TGR) from 640 locations was measured with the mean value found to be 176?±?5 nGy h?1. Ninety-eight soil samples were analysed using a high-purity germanium detector (HPGe), and the mean concentrations of the radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th and 40K are 110?±?3, 151?±?5 and 542?±?51 Bq kg?1, respectively.226Ra and 232Th concentrations were found to be three times the world average, while that of 40K is quite higher than the world average value. The acid-intrusive geological formation has the highest mean concentrations for 226Ra (215?±?6 Bq kg?1), 232Th (384?±?12 Bq kg?1) and 40K (1564?±?153 Bq kg?1). The radium equivalent activities (Req) and the external hazard index (Hex) for the various soil types were also calculated. Some of the soil types were found to have values exceeding the internationally recommended levels of 370 Bq kg?1 and the unity value, respectively.  相似文献

During the manufacturing process in the cement industry, raw materials of different levels of natural radioactivity are utilized. In this study we present the radiological impact of cements as a building material and the different raw materials used in their manufacture. A total of 218 samples of raw materials and their end product cements were collected from the cement industry of Macedonia (The Former Yugoslav Republic) during the period 2005–2007. The specific activities, evaluated by gamma spectrometry analysis, showed the highest mean specific activity in fly ash (226Ra, 107 ± 45 Bq kg?1; 232Th, 109 ± 30 Bq kg?1; 40K, 685 ± 171 Bq kg?1), which is used as a raw material. However, the final cement product usually has relatively lower activity compared with the activity of the raw material and the mean specific activity of the final cement products were lower (226Ra, 42 ± 10 Bq kg?1; 232Th, 28 ± 6 Bq kg?1; 40K, 264 ± 50 Bq kg?1). The radium equivalent activity and the hazard index were calculated for each sample to assess the radiation hazard. The mean annual effective dose originating from the cements was found to be 111 ± 22 μSv y?1, which is below the recommended EC limit of 300 μSv y?1.  相似文献

A uranium mineralized area of Stara Planina Mt., Serbia, where uranium ore was exploited for seven years was characterized radiologically. Results were compared with those for an area of background radiation in the northern part of the mountain. The terrestrial gamma dose rate due to 238U, 232Th and 40K in the area affected by mining activities was twofold higher than that of background area. The radiological situation of the affected area is not of immediate concern, except one location with elevated external hazard index where remediative measures taking into account site-specific ecological characteristics should be planned and implemented.  相似文献

Textile dyes are among the most problematic pollutants because of their toxicity on several organisms and ecosystems. Many of the chemicals used in the textile industry may represent some health concerns. The determination of the radioactivity in textile dyes is therefore very important for both human health and environment. The study was designated to determine, for the first time, the values of 238U, 232Th and 40K in nine different dyes employed in the textile industry using gamma spectrometry with a Hyper Pure Germanium (HPGe) detector. The mean activity concentrations of 238U, 232Th and 40K were 29.37?±?4.48, 1.15?±?0.13 and 565?±?4 Bq/kg, respectively. The calculated radium equivalents for all samples were lower than the maximum admissible value (370 Bq/kg). The absorbed dose rates due to the natural radioactivity of the investigated samples ranged from 2.94?±?0.05 to 166?±?3 nGy/h. So, the absorbed dose rates for all samples of textile dyes were lower than the international recommended value (55 nGy/h) except the yellow dye (166?±?3 nGy/h), which recorded a significant radiological hazard. The external hazard index was also calculated. Conclusively, the results have indicated that the textile dyes may possess a measurable amount of radioactivity that should be taken into account. Therefore, safety rules and precautions should be applied for dyes used in the textile industry and for people working in this field.  相似文献

The activity concentrations of natural 40K, 232Th, and 238U in 89 soil and 84 sediment samples collected over the entire Egyptian Nile River basin including the Nile delta are reported based on the results of epithermal neutron activation analysis. The average activity concentrations of 40K, 232Th, and 238U equal to 15.3?±?6.6, 15.6?±?11.1 and 220?±?31 Bq/kg, respectively, are significantly lower than those reported for the Upper Continental Crust, World Average Sediments as well as World Average Soils, suggesting the presence of a considerable portion of mafic material, most probably originating from the Ethiopian High Plateau. Their average activity concentrations are statistically the same in soil and sediments, indicating that the Nile sediments and soil material are of the same origin. The main goal of this study was not only to estimate the radiological hazards but also to show the influence of sedimentary material transportable by the Blue Nile from the Ethiopian High Plateau. The different hazard indices like the radium equivalent, gamma index, external hazard as well as the internal hazard show a low radiological exposure either on direct contact or if local mud bricks are used in the construction of dwellings.  相似文献

The radioactivity levels are poorly studied in non-coastal arid regions. For this reason, 38 locations covering an area of about 350 km2 in northeast Sinai, Egypt, were investigated by γ-ray spectroscopy. Moderately significant correlations among 238U, 234Th, and 226Ra isotopes and low significant correlations between the concentrations of 238U-series and 232Th in sand were obtained. No evidence of correlation was found between the concentrations of radioisotopes and pH, grain size, total organic matter content, bicarbonate or calcium carbonate concentrations of the sand samples. The mean values of soil-to-plant transfer factor were 0.15, 0.18, 1.52 and 0.74 for 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs, respectively. The range of concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K in water samples collected from five wells were<0.4–0.16,<0.4–0.13, and<0.15–1.62 Bq l?1, respectively. The mean absorbed dose rate in outdoor air at a height of 1 m above the ground surface for the sand samples was 19.4 nGy h?1. The Raeq activities of the sands are lower than the recommended maximum value of 370 Bq kg?1 criterion limit for building materials.  相似文献

The Jos Plateau has been reported to have elevated levels of natural background radiation. A few earlier studies have measured the levels of natural radioactivity for specific locations in the area. Our interest is to investigate how geology of the study area influences the activity concentrations of natural radionuclides. Thus, the activity concentrations of terrestrial radionuclides in soil samples collected across the geological formations of the Jos Plateau were determined by gamma spectrometry technique. The mean activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were found to exceed their corresponding world reference values of 35, 40 and 400?Bq?kg?1, respectively. Data were compared using statistical methods, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post hoc tests. The results revealed in some instances significant influences of geological types on the activity concentrations in the area. The spatial distribution maps of activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were geostatistically interpolated by ordinary Kriging method using ArcGIS software.  相似文献

The results of activity concentration measurements of natural occurring radioactive nuclides 238U, 235U, 232Th, 226Ra, and 40K in surface soil samples collected in the area of cities Tuzla and Lukavac, northeast region of Bosnia and Herzegovina were presented. Soil sampling was conducted at the localities that are situated in the vicinity of industrial zones of these cities. The measured activity was in the range from (8?±?4) to (95?±?28) Bq kg–1 for 238U, from (0.41?±?0.06) to (4.6?±?0.7) Bq kg–1 for 235U, from (7?±?1) to (66?±?7) Bq kg–1 for 232Th, from (6?±?1) to (55?±?6) Bq kg–1 for 226Ra, and from (83?±?12) to (546?±?55) Bq kg–1 for 40K. In order to evaluate the radiological hazard of the natural radioactivity for people living near industrial zones, the absorbed dose rate, the annual effective dose and the radium equivalent activity have been calculated and compared with the internationally approved values.  相似文献

Measurements of indoor radon levels and gamma dose rates were performed in 42 workplaces in Ioannina, north-western Greece. Radon concentrations followed a log-normal distribution with an arithmetic mean of 95 ± 51 Bq m?3. In all cases, radon levels were below 400 Bq m?3, which is the action level implemented by the Greek Regulation for Radiation Protection, in accordance with the European Commission recommendation. Comparing summer and winter measurements, no statistically significant seasonal variation was established. However, radon concentrations measured in basement and ground floor workplaces were significantly higher (p < 0.01) than those measured in the first and upper floors. Annual effective dose rates from inhalation of radon and its decay products were estimated to be in the range from 0.13 to 1.36 mSv y?1 with a mean value of 0.62 mSv y?1. Indoor exposure to natural gamma radiation entailed an average effective dose rate of 0.13 mSv y?1, of which approximately 62% was due to terrestrial and the rest due to cosmic sources. The reported data contribute to the assessment of radon distribution and dose estimate at the national level.  相似文献

An extensive study was conducted to determine the activity concentrations of natural and artificial radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs in soil samples of each governate of Jordan. A total of 370 samples have been measured using a high-purity germanium detector. The activity concentration for 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs has mean values of 42?±?3, 23?±?3, 309?±?21, and 3.7?±?0.9 Bq kg–1, respectively. The highest mean activity concentration for 226Ra was found to be 138?±?4 Bq kg–1 in the Alkarak governate. In the Ajloun and Jarash governates, the highest mean activity concentration was 35?±?3 Bq kg–1 for 232Th, and 14.2?±?1.9 Bq kg–1 for 137Cs, respectively. Geological influence on the activity concentrations was investigated using the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and independent samples. The ANOVA results indicate that there are strong significant differences between the activity concentrations of 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs based on geological formations the radionuclides occur. The main contribution to gamma dose rate was due to 226Ra activity concentration. Radium equivalent and external hazard index are associated with a mean value of 98 Bq kg–1, and 0.266, respectively.  相似文献

238U and 232Th concentrations as well as 222Rn and 220Rn α-activities per unit volume were measured in various natural honey samples collected from different regions in Morocco using CR-39 and LR-115 type II solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs). These radionuclides were also measured in soils, plant flowers and nectar solutions corresponding to the honey samples studied. In addition, these radionuclides were measured in different imported honey samples. The measured 238U, 232Th, 222Rn and 220Rn concentrations ranged from (1.5±0.1) mBq kg−1 to (10.6±0.6) mBq kg−1, (1.1±0.1) mBq kg−1 to (4.2±0.2) mBq kg−1, (1.5±0.1) Bq kg−1 to (10.6±0.6) Bq kg−1 and (1.1±0.1) Bq kg−1 to (4.2±0.2) Bq kg−1 for the honey samples studied, respectively. Annual 238U, 232Th and 222Rn intakes by Moroccan adults from the consumption of honey were assessed. The influence of the nature of soil and plant on the 238U and 232Th contents of the studied honey samples was investigated. These measurements were completed by an investigation of the 238U and 232Th transfer between soils and plant flowers and that between plant flowers and honey, and also by the investigation of the influence of pollution due to different material dusts on 238U, 232Th and 222Rn in the honey samples studied. Committed equivalent doses due to the annual intake of 238U, 232Th and 222Rn were evaluated in the organs of adult members of the Moroccan rural population from the ingestion of the honey samples. The maximum total committed effective dose due to 238U, 232Th and 222Rn from the ingestion of natural honey by the Moroccan rural population was found to be equal to 0.64 μ Sv y−1.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The specific activities of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K of 26 samples of granite produced in Xinjiang of China were measured by a high-purity germanium detector, and their radiological hazards of radium equivalent, external hazard index, internal hazard index, absorbed dose rate, annual effective dose rate, gamma index and alpha index were evaluated. The results indicate that the overall average specific activities of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K obtained in the investigated samples are below the world’s average granite values. The average radium equivalent is within the recommended limit of 370?Bq?kg?1. The results obtained further show that the mean values of external hazard index, internal hazard index, absorbed dose rate, annual effective dose rate, gamma index and alpha index are 0.65, 0.77, 111.7?nGy?h?1, 0.55 mSv?y?1, 0.89 and 0.23, respectively. These mean values established that radiological hazards are also found to be below the international recommended values. The results are compared with granite samples from other countries or China-Taiwan province. It can be noticed that the specific activity values of granite samples produced in China are lower or similar to that of other countries or China-Taiwan province, however there are higher specific activity values for 226Ra and 232Th in individual samples, which need to provide proper radiation monitoring before use considering the long term health effect.  相似文献

The activity concentrations of the natural radionuclides namely 238Ra, 232Th and 40K are measured for soil samples collected from different locations of Faridkot and Mansa districts of Punjab. HPGe detector, based on high-resolution gamma spectrometry system is used for the measurement of activity concentration. The range of activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in the soil from the studied areas varies from 21.42 Bq kg−1 to 40.23 Bq kg−1, 61.01 Bq kg−1 to 142.34 Bq kg−1 and 227.11 Bq kg−1 to 357.13 Bq kg−1 with overall mean values of 27.17 Bq kg−1, 95.22 Bq kg−1 and 312.76 Bq kg−1, respectively. Radium equivalent activities are calculated for the analyzed samples to assess the radiation hazards arising due to the use of these soil samples in the construction of dwellings. The absorbed dose rate calculated from activity concentration of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K ranges between 9.87 and 18.55, 38.01 and 88.68 and 9.40 and 14.79 nGy h−1, respectively. The total absorbed dose in the study area ranges from 61.10 nGy h−1 to 112.86 nGy h−1 with an average value of 84.80 nGy h−1. The calculated values of external hazard index (H ex) for the soil samples of the study area range from 0.36 to 0.68. Since these values are lower than unity, according to the Radiation Protection 112 (European Commission, 1999) report, soil from these regions is safe and can be used as construction material without posing any significant radiological threat to population. The corresponding average annual effective dose for indoor and outdoor measured in the study area are 0.42 mSv and 0.10 mSv respectively.   相似文献
