We present subexponential parameterized algorithms on planar graphs for a family of problems of the following shape: given a graph, find a connected (induced) subgraph with bounded maximum degree and with maximum number of edges (or vertices). These problems are natural generalisations of the Longest Path problem. Our approach uses bidimensionality theory combined with novel dynamic programming techniques over branch decompositions of the input graph. These techniques can be applied to a more general family of problems that deal with finding connected subgraphs under certain degree constraints.  相似文献

Let H be a family of connected graphs. A graph G is said to be H-free if G is H-free for every graph H in H. In Aldred et al. (2010) [1], it was pointed that there is a family of connected graphs H not containing any induced subgraph of the claw having the property that the set of H-free connected graphs containing a claw is finite, provided also that those graphs have minimum degree at least 2 and maximum degree at least 3. In the same work, it was also asked whether there are other families with the same property. In this paper, we answer this question by solving a wider problem. We consider not only claw-free graphs but the more general class of star-free graphs. Concretely, given t≥3, we characterize all the graph families H such that every large enough H-free connected graph is K1,t-free. Additionally, for the case t=3, we show the families that one gets when adding the condition ∣H∣≤k for each positive integer k.  相似文献

A graph H is said to be light in a family H of graphs if each graph GH containing a subgraph isomorphic to H contains also an isomorphic copy of H such that each its vertex has the degree (in G) bounded above by a finite number φ(H,H) depending only on H and H. We prove that in the family of all 3-connected plane graphs of minimum degree 5 (or minimum face size 5, respectively), the paths with certain small graphs attached to one of its ends are light.  相似文献

One of the basic results in graph theory is Dirac's theorem, that every graph of order n?3 and minimum degree ?n/2 is Hamiltonian. This may be restated as: if a graph of order n and minimum degree ?n/2 contains a cycle C then it contains a spanning cycle, which is just a spanning subdivision of C. We show that the same conclusion is true if instead of C, we choose any graph H such that every connected component of H is non-trivial and contains at most one cycle. The degree bound can be improved to (n-t)/2 if H has t components that are trees.We attempt a similar generalization of the Corrádi-Hajnal theorem that every graph of order ?3k and minimum degree ?2k contains k disjoint cycles. Again, this may be restated as: every graph of order ?3k and minimum degree ?2k contains a subdivision of kK3. We show that if H is any graph of order n with k components, each of which is a cycle or a non-trivial tree, then every graph of order ?n and minimum degree ?n-k contains a subdivision of H.  相似文献

We have proved that every 3-connected planar graph G either contains a path on k vertices each of which has degree at most 5k or does not contain any path on k vertices; the bound 5k is the best possible. Moreover, for every connected planar graph H other than a path and for every integer m ≥ 3 there is a 3-connected planar graph G such that each copy of H in G contains a vertex of degree at least m.  相似文献

An arc of a graph is an oriented edge and a 3-arc is a 4-tuple (v, u, x, y) of vertices such that both (v, u, x) and (u, x, y) are paths of length two. The 3-arc graph of a graph G is defined to have vertices the arcs of G such that two arcs uv, xy are adjacent if and only if (v, u, x, y) is a 3-arc of G. We prove that any connected 3-arc graph is hamiltonian, and all iterative 3-arc graphs of any connected graph of minimum degree at least three are hamiltonian. As a corollary we obtain that any vertex-transitive graph which is isomorphic to the 3-arc graph of a connected arc-transitive graph of degree at least three must be hamiltonian. This confirms the conjecture, for this family of vertex-transitive graphs, that all vertex-transitive graphs with finitely many exceptions are hamiltonian. We also prove that if a graph with at least four vertices is Hamilton-connected, then so are its iterative 3-arc graphs.  相似文献

Let k be a non-negative integer. A branch vertex of a tree is a vertex of degree at least three. We show two sufficient conditions for a connected claw-free graph to have a spanning tree with a bounded number of branch vertices: (i) A connected claw-free graph has a spanning tree with at most k branch vertices if its independence number is at most 2k + 2. (ii) A connected claw-free graph of order n has a spanning tree with at most one branch vertex if the degree sum of any five independent vertices is at least n ? 2. A graph H is imbedded in a graph G if a subset of the vertices of G determines a subgraph isomorphic to H. If λ(G) is the least eigenvalue of G and kR(H) = lim supd→∞ {λ(G)| H imbedded in G; G regular and connected; diam(G) > d; deg(G) > d}, then λ(H) ? 2 ≤ kR(H) ≤ λ(H) with these bounds being the best possible. Let h denote the maximum degree of a connected graph H, and let χ(H) denote its chromatic, number. Brooks' Theorem asserts that if h ≥ 3, then χ(H) ≤ h, unless H is the complete graph Kh+1. We show that when H is not Kh+1, there is an h-coloring of H in which a maximum independent set is monochromatic. We characterize those graphs H having an h-coloring in which some color class consists of vertices of degree h in H. Again, without any loss of generality, this color class may be assumed to be maximum with respect to the condition that its vertices have degree h.  相似文献

A connected graph is said to be unoriented Laplacian maximizing if the spectral radius of its unoriented Laplacian matrix attains the maximum among all connected graphs with the same number of vertices and the same number of edges. A graph is said to be threshold (maximal) if its degree sequence is not majorized by the degree sequence of any other graph (and, in addition, the graph is connected). It is proved that an unoriented Laplacian maximizing graph is maximal and also that there are precisely two unoriented Laplacian maximizing graphs of a given order and with nullity 3. Our treatment depends on the following known characterization: a graph G is threshold (maximal) if and only if for every pair of vertices u,v of G, the sets N(u)?{v},N(v)?{u}, where N(u) denotes the neighbor set of u in G, are comparable with respect to the inclusion relation (and, in addition, the graph is connected). A conjecture about graphs that maximize the unoriented Laplacian matrix among all graphs with the same number of vertices and the same number of edges is also posed.  相似文献

We consider the existence of Hamiltonian cycles for the locally connected graphs with a bounded vertex degree. For a graph G, let Δ(G) and δ(G) denote the maximum and minimum vertex degrees, respectively. We explicitly describe all connected, locally connected graphs with Δ(G)?4. We show that every connected, locally connected graph with Δ(G)=5 and δ(G)?3 is fully cycle extendable which extends the results of Kikust [P.B. Kikust, The existence of the Hamiltonian circuit in a regular graph of degree 5, Latvian Math. Annual 16 (1975) 33-38] and Hendry [G.R.T. Hendry, A strengthening of Kikust’s theorem, J. Graph Theory 13 (1989) 257-260] on full cycle extendability of the connected, locally connected graphs with the maximum vertex degree bounded by 5. Furthermore, we prove that problem Hamilton Cycle for the locally connected graphs with Δ(G)?7 is NP-complete.  相似文献

By the signless Laplacian of a (simple) graph G we mean the matrix Q(G)=D(G)+A(G), where A(G),D(G) denote respectively the adjacency matrix and the diagonal matrix of vertex degrees of G. For every pair of positive integers n,k, it is proved that if 3?k?n-3, then Hn,k, the graph obtained from the star K1,n-1 by joining a vertex of degree 1 to k+1 other vertices of degree 1, is the unique connected graph that maximizes the largest signless Laplacian eigenvalue over all connected graphs with n vertices and n+k edges.  相似文献

Wei discovered that the independence number of a graph G is at least Σv(1 + d(v))?1. It is proved here that if G is a connected triangle-free graph on n ≥ 3 vertices and if G is neither an odd cycle nor an odd path, then the bound above can be increased by nΔ(Δ + 1), where Δ is the maximum degree. This new bound is sharp for even cycles and for three other graphs. These results relate nicely to some algorithms for finding large independent sets. They also have a natural matrix theory interpretation. A survey of other known lower bounds on the independence number is presented.  相似文献

Given a connected undirected graph G, the Degree Preserving Spanning Tree Problem (DPSTP) consists in finding a spanning tree T of G that maximizes the number of vertices that have the same degree in T and in G. In this paper, we introduce Integer Programming formulations, valid inequalities and a Branch-and-cut algorithm for the DPSTP. Reinforced with new valid inequalities, the upper bounds provided by the formulation behind our Branch-and-cut method dominate previous DPSTP bounds in the literature.  相似文献

An H1,{H2}-factor of a graph G is a spanning subgraph of G with exactly one component isomorphic to the graph H1 and all other components (if there are any) isomorphic to the graph H2. We completely characterise the class of connected almost claw-free graphs that have a P7,{P2}-factor, where P7 and P2 denote the paths on seven and two vertices, respectively. We apply this result to parallel knock-out schemes for almost claw-free graphs. These schemes proceed in rounds in each of which each surviving vertex eliminates one of its surviving neighbours. A graph is reducible if such a scheme eliminates every vertex in the graph. Using our characterisation, we are able to classify all reducible almost claw-free graphs, and we can show that every reducible almost claw-free graph is reducible in at most two rounds. This leads to a quadratic time algorithm for determining if an almost claw-free graph is reducible (which is a generalisation and improvement upon the previous strongest result that showed that there was a O(n5.376) time algorithm for claw-free graphs on n vertices).  相似文献

A connected even [2,2s]-factor of a graph G is a connected factor with all vertices of degree i (i=2,4,…,2s), where s?1 is an integer. In this paper, we show that every supereulerian K1,s-free graph (s?2) contains a connected even [2,2s-2]-factor, hereby generalizing the result that every 4-connected claw-free graph has a connected [2,4]-factor by Broersma, Kriesell and Ryjacek.  相似文献

Let H be a subgroup of a group G. Suppose that (G,H) is a Hecke pair and that H is finitely generated by a finite symmetric set of size k. Then G/H can be seen as a graph (possibly with loops and multiple edges) whose connected components form a family (Xi)iI of finite k-regular graphs. We prove that for every graph H with the minimum degree δ?5, the third iterated line graph L3(H) of H contains as a minor. Using this fact we prove that if G is a connected graph distinct from a path, then there is a number kG such that for every i?kG the i-iterated line graph of G is -linked. This paper concerns finite, edge-transitive direct and strong products, as well as infinite weak Cartesian products. We prove that the direct product of two connected, non-bipartite graphs is edge-transitive if and only if both factors are edge-transitive and at least one is arc-transitive, or one factor is edge-transitive and the other is a complete graph with loops at each vertex. Also, a strong product is edge-transitive if and only if all factors are complete graphs. In addition, a connected, infinite non-trivial Cartesian product graph G is edge-transitive if and only if it is vertex-transitive and if G is a finite weak Cartesian power of a connected, edge- and vertex-transitive graph H, or if G is the weak Cartesian power of a connected, bipartite, edge-transitive graph H that is not vertex-transitive.  相似文献
