We have calculated Compton profiles of multiply ionized oxygen atoms with electronic configurations 1sm2sn2pq, m=1−2,n=0−2,q=0−4. The values of the Compton profiles from the present calculation can be used to determine the doubly differential electron production cross sections in recent ion-atom collision experiments with oxygen ions in the rest frame of the target atoms. The calculations have been performed in impulse approximation using numerical Hartree-Fock wave functions. Compton profiles of neutral oxygen atoms, available in the literature, are in excellent agreement with the present calculation. The variation of Compton profile with the degree of ionization is investigated.  相似文献

In a previous paper this author examined the Born expansion and isolated those parts of the expansion that contribute most significantly to the scattering amplitude for large momentum transfer collisions in inelastic collisions from the ground state of both hydrogen and helium. It turned out that certain terms where the scattering electron interacts once with the nucleus and once with the other electron dominate. The physical reason is that large momentum transfer collisions require the nucleus to take the bulk of the incident momentum but require an interaction with the one of the bound electrons to change the state of the atom. The arguments are quite general and this paper will extend this analysis by comparing the inelastic results obtained by this method for hydrogen and helium to a close coupling calculation with many intermediate states. Further, we will extend this analysis to the correction to the 1st Born result for elastic electron-hydrogen and electron-helium collisions and provide some results for scattering from the initial metastable states of hydrogen for large momentum transfer collisions. A comparison of the results of this analytic approach will be made to the numerical close coupling approach and experiments where available. The agreement is remarkable.  相似文献

Electron momentum spectroscopy (EMS) study of the neon valence satellites is reported. The experiments were performed at impact energies of 1250, 1450 and 1670 eV using a multichannel spectrometer that features high sensitivity. Binding energy spectra up to 100 eV and momentum profiles for the 2p−1 and 2s−1 primary transitions as well as the satellites are presented. The results are used to examine impact energy dependence of the relative intensities and shapes of the satellite momentum profiles. The results are also used to determine symmetries and spectroscopic factors of the satellites, and are compared with the previous experiments by EMS and photoelectron spectroscopy and sophisticated theoretical calculations. The present study has largely resolved controversies in the previous studies.  相似文献

Laser-induced fluorescence by means of a cw dye laser has been used for investigating the velocity distribution of sputtered Zr atoms in the ground state. In order to evaluate the data the excitation probability of the atoms in the observation volume has been measured. The velocity distribution of Zr atoms for irradiation with Ar+-ions as well as light ions at normal and oblique angle (70°) of incidence is presented.  相似文献

We report the experimental observation of alignment to orientation conversion in the 7D3/2 and 9D3/2 states of Cs in the presence of an external dc electric field and without the influence of magnetic fields or atomic collisions. Initial alignment of angular momentum states was created by two-step excitation with linearly polarized laser radiation. The appearance of transverse orientation of angular momentum was confirmed by the observation of circularly polarized light. We present experimentally measured signals and compare them with the results of a detailed theoretical model based on the optical Bloch equations. The effect is odd under time reversal and should be taken into account in ever more sensitive searches for an electron electric dipole moment.  相似文献

This paper is devoted to the study of a new atomic cavity consisting of a single horizontal concave mirror placed in the earth gravitational field. Gravity, by bending the atomic trajectories, plays the role of a second mirror closing the cavity. We first discuss the stability criterion for this cavity, assuming that the mirror has a parabolic shape. We then derive the quantum mechanical modes of such a configuration, with particular emphasis on the paraxial (i.e., close to vertical) motion. Sulfur atoms are produced in the excited 3s 23p 4 1 D 2 and 3s 23p 4 1 S 0 levels by two-photon photodissociation of CS2 in the gas phase in the region 285–305 nm. These excited atoms are detected by three-photon (two to resonance) ionisation at selected laser wavelengths. Many new transitions have been observed which have not been reported previously. The new dark states that have been accessed by two-photon absorption have been characterised and the energy levels with respect to the ground 3 P 2 state have been determined. Configuration interaction between 6p 3 P 1, 6p 5 P 1, and 4p1 P 1 states, and also between 6p 3 P 2, 6p 5 P 2, and 4p1 D 2 states has been observed. It is found that intermediate states reached from the 1 S 0 level through two-photon absorption lie above the first ionisation potential of S+(4 S 0). It is proposed that autoionisation into the 4 S 0+e continuum is a dominant mechanism in the decay of these levels, although ionisation by a further photon absorption is not ruled out.  相似文献

The main properties of longitudinal and transverse electric field ionizers for fast Rydberg atoms n=21–40 have been investigated. The dispersion and the background due to collisional processes between fast atoms and residual gas molecules have been measured and calculated. The kinetic energy spread of ions formed by field ionization of Rydberg atoms and their trajectories have been calculated. The potassium beam energy was 3.9 keV.  相似文献

As it is known [1] an intense laser field can induce atom-atom interaction according to a dipole-dipole R –3 law. Such an interaction depends on the angle between light polarization and interatomic vector-position R. This angular dependence may produce an anisotropy in the spatial density distribution of the confined sample of cold atoms. We develop the main relations and apply them to the case of an atomic cloud of cold trapped neutral atoms with the density higher than or of the order of –3, where is the wavelength of light. The results presented here show the effect of such an interaction in a density regime of high experimental interest.  相似文献

The electron momentum distribution and Compton profiles of the rare earth element Eu was measured using HPGe photon detector. The target atoms were excited by means of 59.54 keV gamma rays from Am-241 radioactive source of strength 300 mCi. Elemental foil of uniform aerial density, and purity better than 99.9% was used as target. The data were recorded and analyzed using a 4 K multichannel analyzer. These data duly corrected for instrumental resolution effects, sample absorption, energy dependence of the differential Compton cross-section and double scattering, and compared with theoretical renormalized free atom (RFA) values.  相似文献

We demonstrate two schemes for the coherent excitation of Rydberg atoms in an ultracold gas of rubidium atoms employing the three-level ladder system 5S1/2-5P3/2-n?j. In the first approach rapid adiabatic passage with pulsed laser fields yields Rydberg excitation probabilities of 90% in the center of the laser focus. In a second experiment two-photon Rydberg excitation with continuous-wave fields is applied which results in Rabi oscillations between the ground and Rydberg state. The experiments represent a prerequisite for the control of interactions in ultracold Rydberg gases and the application of ultracold Rydberg gases for quantum information processing.  相似文献

The isotropic Compton profile of iridium, measured using 59.54 keVγ-rays, is reported in this paper. The results are compared with the theoretical Compton profiles from APW method with and without incorporating electron correlation effects. It is seen that correlation effects improve the agreement between the experiment and theory. Comparison with the renormalized-free-atom (RFA) model calculations has also been made. Behaviour ofd-band electrons in Ir and some other 5d transition metals is discussed in terms of broadening in their Compton profiles.  相似文献

Two-level atoms bouncing in a stable gravitational cavity are considered, where the atomic mirror at the bottom of the bounces is an evanescent wave caused by an internally reflected intense Gaussian-mode laser beam. We consider the broadening mechanisms of the atoms from their initially tightly spaced position distribution, using a phenomenological semi-classical model, which includes spontaneous emission. A fully quantum model, which neglects spontaneous emission, is derived, and the broadening of the atomic wave function in the quantum model is compared with the broadening of the atomic distribution in an analogous classical simulation where spontaneous emission is similarly neglected. We find that the broadening is correctly described by the classical simulations in the horizontal directions, while it significantly underestimates the broadening in the vertical direction.Dedicated to H. Possibilities of trapping ground state atoms in static fields are studied. It is shown that it is impossible to trap ground state particles at rest using arbitrary combinations of electric, magnetic, and gravitational fields, a result which is a considerable generalization of Wing's theorem. Similarly, it is impossible to make a thin lens for ground state atoms using static fields. Confinement of ground state particles in dynamic equilibrium can be achieved. Axially symmetric storage rings with electric or magnetic fields are possible and should be experimentally feasible. Such storage rings have the important advantage that ground state particles can be confined, hence loss of atoms by two-body collisions is avoided.  相似文献

Using optical dipole forces we have realized controlled transport of a single or any desired small number of neutral atoms over a distance of a centimeter with sub-micrometer precision. A standing wave dipole trap is loaded with a prescribed number of cesium atoms from a magneto-optical trap. Mutual detuning of the counter-propagating laser beams moves the interference pattern, allowing us to accelerate and stop the atoms at preselected points along the standing wave. The transportation efficiency is close to 100%. This optical ‘single-atom conveyor belt’ represents a versatile tool for future experiments requiring deterministic delivery of a prescribed number of atoms on demand. We have demonstrated that a cobalt single crystal can be used to make a remarkably smooth retro-reflector for cold paramagnetic atoms. The crystal is cut so that its surface lies in the (0001) plane and the atoms are reflected by the magnetic field above the surface due to the self-organized pattern of magnetic domains in the material. We find that the reflectivity for suitably polarized atoms exceeds 90% and may well be unity. We use the angular spread of a reflected atom cloud to measure the roughness of the mirror. We find that the angular variation of the equivalent hard reflecting surface is (3.1±0.3°)rms for atoms dropped onto the mirror from a height of 2 cm. We theoretically show that the process of inner-shell photoionization in an atom A, followed by the spontaneous sequential emission of two Auger electrons, produces various kinds of spin-entangled states of three flying electronic qubits. All properties of these states are completely pre-determined by the total spin quantum numbers of the electronic states of four atomic species (i.e., A, A+, A2+, A3+) participating in this process in the Russell-Saunders coupling. These tripartite states are readily characterized experimentally by measuring only energies of the three emitted electrons, without requiring any entanglement witness or other such protocols.  相似文献

Energy distributions of the electrons ejected from the evaporated film surfaces of LiF, LiCl, LiBr, NaF and NaCl by the impact of metastable He and Ne atoms have been measured. The observed distribution curves have two distinct structures: one peak is identified as the valence band structure caused by Penning ionization, while the other peak is ascribed to scattered electrons. The positions of the valence band peaks are shifted to lower ionization energy from the corresponding photoelectron peaks (by 0.1–1.5 eV depending on the substance). In contrast to the photoelectron spectra, the structure attributable to conduction bands appears only very weakly. The relative intensity of the peak caused by scattered electrons is either strong or weak depending on the combination of the metastable atom and the sample. The interpretation of this observation is that the scattered electron peak is enhanced when the energy of the metastable atom exceeds twice the band gap energy, i.e. when the electron—electron scattering of Penning electrons in the solid is feasible.  相似文献
