One of a new generation of combat models is examined to determine how its behaviour differs from older approaches based on first-order linear differential equations. This new methodology, which uses ‘cellular automaton’ or ‘agent-based’ models, has been around for a decade, prompting closer scrutiny. The method gives entities within a combat simulation the autonomy to react to circumstances in their local area. The reaction is determined by each entity's ‘personality’. It is found that the automata tend to either fight as a massed force, or form dispersed patterns of clusters within clusters. Such a pattern is known as a ‘fractal’. By adopting this pattern, a non-intuitive relationship between the kill probability of the automata and the force attrition rate develops. This provides a compelling example of how the result presented by earlier workers—that automaton models may evolve into fractal distributions—can have significance for operational researchers.  相似文献

A huge body of empirical and theoretical literature has emerged on the relationship between foreign exchange (FX) uncertainty and international trade. Empirical findings about the impact of FX uncertainty on trade figures are at best weak and often ambiguous with respect to its direction. Almost all empirical contributions assume and estimate a linear relationship. Possible nonlinearity or state dependence of causal links between FX uncertainty and trade has been mostly ignored yet. In addition, widely used regression models have not been evaluated in terms of ex‐ante forecasting. In this paper we analyse the impact of FX uncertainty on sectoral categories of multilateral exports and imports for 15 industrialized economies. We particularly provide a comparison of linear and non‐linear models with respect to ex‐ante forecasting. In terms of average ranks of absolute forecast errors non‐linear models outperform both, a common linear model and some specification building on the assumption that FX uncertainty and trade growth are uncorrelated. Our results support the view that the relationship of interest might be non‐linear and, moreover, lacks of homogeneity across countries, economic sectors and when contrasting imports vs exports. The satellite‐to‐satellite tracking (SST) problems are characterized from mathematical point of view. Uniqueness results are formulated. Moreover, the basic relations are developed between (scalar) approximation of the earth's gravitational potential by ‘scalar basis systems’ and (vectorial) approximation of the gravitational field by ‘vectorial basis systems’. Finally, the mathematical justification is given for approximating the external geopotential field by finite linear combinations of certain gradient fields (for example, gradient fields of multi‐poles) consistent to a given set of SST data. ABSTRACT. We utilize a spatial bioeconomic model to investigate the impacts of creating reserves on limited‐entry fisheries. We find that reserve creation can produce win‐win situations where aggregate biomass and the common license (lease) price increase. These situations arise in biological systems where dispersal processes are prevalent and the fishery prior to reserve creation is operating at effort levels in a neighborhood of open‐access levels. We also illustrate that using strictly biological criteria for siting reserves (e.g., setting aside the most biological productive areas) will likely induce the most vociferous objections from the fishing industry. In general, we find that the dispersal rate and the degree the patches are connected play a significant role on the net impacts on the fishing sector.  相似文献

Solutions of large sparse linear systems of equations are usually obtained iteratively by constructing a smaller dimensional subspace such as a Krylov subspace. The convergence of these methods is sometimes hampered by the presence of small eigenvalues, in which case, some form of deflation can help improve convergence. The method presented in this paper enables the solution to be approximated by focusing the attention directly on the ‘small’ eigenspace (‘singular vector’ space). It is based on embedding the solution of the linear system within the eigenvalue problem (singular value problem) in order to facilitate the direct use of methods such as implicitly restarted Arnoldi or Jacobi–Davidson for the linear system solution. The proposed method, called ‘solution by null‐space approximation and projection’ (SNAP), differs from other similar approaches in that it converts the non‐homogeneous system into a homogeneous one by constructing an annihilator of the right‐hand side. The solution then lies in the null space of the resulting matrix. We examine the construction of a sequence of approximate null spaces using a Jacobi–Davidson style singular value decomposition method, called restarted SNAP‐JD, from which an approximate solution can be obtained. Relevant theory is discussed and the method is illustrated by numerical examples where SNAP is compared with both GMRES and GMRES‐IR. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We present a reservation price model to examine the joint impacts of natural disturbances and stumpage price uncertainty on the optimal harvesting decision for even‐aged forest stands. We consider a landowner who manages a loblolly pine stand to produce timber and amenities, under age‐dependent risk of wildfires and uncertainty in future timber prices. We show that the incorporation of risk of wildfires decreases the optimal reservation prices. The inclusion of risk of wildfires leads to lower land values and reduces the mean harvest age compared with the case of no‐risk of wildfires. Higher economic gains are obtained with the reservation price strategy compared with the deterministic rotation age model—a difference in the land value of $2,326 ha?1 (21%) between the two approaches.   • Our adaptive harvest strategy shows that the incorporation of risk of wildfires decreases the optimal reservation prices compared with the case of no‐risk of wildfires.
  • Low reservation prices—a price that makes the landowner indifferent between harvesting or waiting longer—result in lower economic benefits for landowners and potential conversions of lands to nonforest use.
  • Forest management practices oriented to reduce the effects of catastrophic disturbances, for example, creating a more complex forest structure with different stand densities, become imperative to ensure the sustainability of forestlands in the US South.
  • Our analysis also suggests that the valuation of forestry investments should consider not only the risk of catastrophic events but also uncertainty in future timber prices. Higher appraisals of land value are obtained when timber price uncertainty is explicitly recognized, providing financial incentives for landowners to invest in forestry.

Whenever simulation requires much computer time, interpolation is needed. Simulationists use different interpolation techniques (eg linear regression), but this paper focuses on Kriging. This technique was originally developed in geostatistics by DG Krige, and has recently been widely applied in deterministic simulation. This paper, however, focuses on random or stochastic simulation. Essentially, Kriging gives more weight to ‘neighbouring’ observations. There are several types of Kriging; this paper discusses—besides Ordinary Kriging—a novel type, which ‘detrends’ data through the use of linear regression. Results are presented for two examples of input/output behaviour of the underlying random simulation model: Ordinary and Detrended Kriging give quite acceptable predictions; traditional linear regression gives the worst results.  相似文献

Non‐linear variability in financial markets can emerge from several mechanisms, including simultaneity and time‐varying coefficients. In simultaneous equation systems, the reduced‐form coefficients that determine the behaviour of jointly dependent variables are products and ratios of the original structural coefficients. If the coefficients are stochastic, the resulting multiplicative interactions will result in high degrees of non‐linearity. Processes generated in this way will scale as fractals: they will exhibit intermittent outliers and scaling symmetries, i.e. proportionality relationships between fluctuations at different separation distances. A model is specified in which both the exchange rate itself and the exchange rate residual exhibit simultaneity. The exchange rate depends on other exchange rates, while the residual depends on the other residuals. The model is then simulated using embedding noise from a t‐distribution. The simulations replicate the observed properties of exchange rates, heavy‐tailed distributions and long memory in the variance. A forecasting algorithm is specified in two stages. The first stage is a model for the actual process. In the second stage the residuals are modelled as a function of the predicted rate of change. The first and second stage models are then combined. This algorithm exploits the scaling symmetry: the residual is proportional to the predicted rate of change at separation distances corresponding to the forecast horizon. The procedure is tested empirically on three exchange rates. At a daily frequency and a 1‐day forecast horizon, two‐stage models reduce the forecast error by one fourth. At a 5‐day horizon, the improvement is 10–15 percent. At a weekly frequency, the improvement at the 1‐week horizon is on the order of 30–40 percent. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The study tries to show one line of how the German didactical tradition has evolved in response to new theoretical ideas and new—empirical—research approaches in mathematics education. First, the classical mathematical didactics, notably ‘stoffdidaktik’ as one (besides other) specific German tradition are described. The critiques raised against ‘stoffdidaktik’ concepts [for example, forms of ‘progressive mathematisation’, ‘actively discovering learning processes’ and ‘guided reinvention’ (cf. Freudenthal, Wittmann)] changed the basic views on the roles that ‘mathematical knowledge’, ‘teacher’ and ‘student’ have to play in teaching–learning processes; this conceptual change was supported by empirical studies on the professional knowledge and activities of mathematics teachers [for example, empirical studies of teacher thinking (cf. Bromme)] and of students’ conceptions and misconceptions (for example, psychological research on students’ mathematical thinking). With the interpretative empirical research on everyday mathematical teaching–learning situations (for example, the work of the research group around Bauersfeld) a new research paradigm for mathematics education was constituted: the cultural system of mathematical interaction (for instance, in the classroom) between teacher and students.  相似文献

Two‐grid methods constitute the building blocks of multigrid methods, which are among the most efficient solution techniques for solving large sparse systems of linear equations. In this paper, an analysis is developed that does not require any symmetry property. Several equivalent expressions are provided that characterize all eigenvalues of the iteration matrix. In the symmetric positive‐definite (SPD) case, these expressions reproduce the sharp two‐grid convergence estimate obtained by Falgout, Vassilevski and Zikatanov (Numer. Linear Algebra Appl. 2005; 12 :471–494), and also previous algebraic bounds, which can be seen as corollaries of this estimate. These results allow to measure the convergence by checking ‘approximation properties’. In this work, proper extensions of the latter to the nonsymmetric case are presented. Sometimes approximation properties for the SPD case are summarized in loose terms; e.g.: Interpolation must be able to approximate an eigenvector with error bound proportional to the size of the eigenvalue (SIAM J. Sci. Comp. 2000; 22 :1570–1592). It is shown that this can be applied to nonsymmetric problems too, understanding ‘size’ as ‘modulus’. Eventually, an analysis is developed, for the nonsymmetric case, of the theoretical foundations of ‘compatible relaxation’, according to which a Fine/Coarse partitioning may be checked and possibly improved. The mixed (Dirichlet–Neumann) boundary‐value problem for the ‘Laplace’ linear differential equation with variable coefficient is reduced to boundary‐domain integro‐differential or integral equations (BDIDEs or BDIEs) based on a specially constructed parametrix. The BDIDEs/BDIEs contain integral operators defined on the domain under consideration as well as potential‐type operators defined on open sub‐manifolds of the boundary and acting on the trace and/or co‐normal derivative of the unknown solution or on an auxiliary function. Some of the considered BDIDEs are to be supplemented by the original boundary conditions, thus constituting boundary‐domain integro‐differential problems (BDIDPs). Solvability, solution uniqueness, and equivalence of the BDIEs/BDIDEs/BDIDPs to the original BVP, as well as invertibility of the associated operators are investigated in appropriate Sobolev spaces. This paper is concerned with the development of a ‘best’ rank one transitive approximation to a general paired comparison matrix in a least‐squares sense. A direct attack on the non‐linear problem is frequently replaced by a sub‐optimal linear problem and, here, the best procedure of this kind is obtained. The Newton–Kantorovich method for the solution of the non‐linear problem is also studied, including the role of the best linear approximation as a starting point for this method. ‘Applicable mathematics’ is based on the idea that mathematics provides a source of models of proposed and postulated states of affairs. The use of the model is essentially to simulate exploration of the possibilities of the situation to which the model relates. Two main areas where this ‘investigation of the implications of possibilities’ is needed are in discussing putative scientific hypotheses and in discussing the implications of proposed or suggested social and technical innovation. Much of what has been customarily called ‘pure mathematics’ can be regarded as second‐order applicable mathematics, i.e. mathematics which adds to and strengthens our over‐all model building capability.

This paper is on the convergence analysis for two‐grid and multigrid methods for linear systems arising from conforming linear finite element discretization of the second‐order elliptic equations with anisotropic diffusion. The multigrid algorithm with a line smoother is known to behave well when the discretization grid is aligned with the anisotropic direction; however, this is not the case with a nonaligned grid. The analysis in this paper is mainly focused on two‐level algorithms. For aligned grids, a lower bound is given for a pointwise smoother, and this bound shows a deterioration in the convergence rate, whereas for ‘maximally’ nonaligned grids (with no edges in the triangulation parallel to the direction of the anisotropy), the pointwise smoother results in a robust convergence. With a specially designed block smoother, we show that, for both aligned and nonaligned grids, the convergence is uniform with respect to the anisotropy ratio and the mesh size in the energy norm. There are several ways of formulating the uncertainty principle for the Fourier transform on ? n . Roughly speaking, the uncertainty principle says that if a functionf is ‘concentrated’ then its Fourier transform $\tilde f$ cannot be ‘concentrated’ unlessf is identically zero. Of course, in the above, we should be precise about what we mean by ‘concentration’. There are several ways of measuring ‘concentration’ and depending on the definition we get a host of uncertainty principles. As several authors have shown, some of these uncertainty principles seem to be a general feature of harmonic analysis on connected locally compact groups. In this paper, we show how various uncertainty principles take form in the case of some locally compact groups including ? n , the Heisenberg group, the reduced Heisenberg groups and the Euclidean motion group of the plane.  相似文献

This paper deals with restricted linear state space models for dynamic style analysis with time‐varying selectivity measurement. Implementation and interpretation of the models are pertinently discussed. Empirical contributions lie on the understanding of how managers of Brazilian US Dollar/Real exchange‐rate funds behaved along 2001 and 2002, a period of some political turbulence especially due to the 2002 Brazilian presidential election.
