This paper introduces a continuum, i.e. non‐discrete, upstream‐bias formulation that rests on the physics and mathematics of acoustics and convection. The formulation induces the upstream‐bias at the differential equation level, within a characteristics‐bias system associated with the Euler equations with general equilibrium equations of state. For low subsonic Mach numbers, this formulation returns a consistent upstream‐bias approximation for the non‐linear acoustics equations. For supersonic Mach numbers, the formulation smoothly becomes an upstream‐bias approximation of the entire Euler flux. With the objective of minimizing induced artificial diffusion, the formulation non‐linearly induces upstream‐bias, essentially locally, in regions of solution discontinuities, whereas it decreases the upstream‐bias in regions of solution smoothness. The discrete equations originate from a finite element discretization of the characteristic‐bias system and are integrated in time within a compact block tridiagonal matrix statement by way of an implicit non‐linearly stable Runge–Kutta algorithm for stiff systems. As documented by several computational results that reflect available exact solutions, the acoustics–convection solver induces low artificial diffusion and generates essentially non‐oscillatory solutions that automatically preserve a constant enthalpy, as well as smoothness of both enthalpy and mass flux across normal shocks. The second of a two‐paper series, this paper details a solver for the characteristics‐bias system from the acoustics–convection upstream resolution algorithm for the Euler and Navier–Stokes equations. An integral formulation leads to several surface integrals that allow effective enforcement of boundary conditions. Also presented is a new multi‐dimensional procedure to enforce a pressure boundary condition at a subsonic outlet, a procedure that remains accurate and stable. A classical finite element Galerkin discretization of the integral formulation on any prescribed grid directly yields an optimal discretely conservative upstream approximation for the Euler and Navier–Stokes equations, an approximation that remains multi‐dimensional independently of the orientation of the reference axes and computational cells. The time‐dependent discrete equations are then integrated in time via an implicit Runge–Kutta procedure that in this paper is proven to remain absolutely non‐linearly stable for the spatially‐discrete Euler and Navier–Stokes equations and shown to converge rapidly to steady states, with maximum Courant number exceeding 100 for the linearized version. Even on relatively coarse grids, the acoustics–convection upstream resolution algorithm generates essentially non‐oscillatory solutions for subsonic, transonic and supersonic flows, encompassing oblique‐ and interacting‐shock fields that converge within 40 time steps and reflect reference exact solutions. We propose in this study a numerically accurate and computationally efficient convection–diffusion–reaction finite difference scheme to discretize the full‐vector and semi‐vector optical waveguide equations. The scheme formulated in a grid stencil of five nodal points for solving the three‐dimensional waveguide equations employs the locally analytic solution. In this three‐dimensional study, calculations were carried out for the investigation of wave propagation in diffused channel, rectangular and rib types of optical waveguide. A series of numerical schemes: first‐order upstream, Lax–Friedrichs; second‐order upstream, central difference, Lax–Wendroff, Beam–Warming, Fromm; third‐order QUICK, QUICKEST and high resolution flux‐corrected transport and total variation diminishing (TVD) methods are compared for one‐dimensional convection–diffusion problems. Numerical results show that the modified TVD Lax–Friedrichs method is the most competent method for convectively dominated problems with a steep spatial gradient of the variables. In this paper, a block incomplete lower–upper (BILU) decomposition method is incorporated with a multiblock three‐dimensional Euler/Navier–Stokes solver for simulation of hovering rotor tip vortices and rotor wake convection. Results of both Euler and Navier–Stokes simulations are obtained and compared with experimental observations. The comparisons include surface pressure distributions and tip vortex trajectories. The comparisons suggest that resolution of the boundary layer is important for the accurate evaluation of the blade surface loading, but is less so for the correct prediction of the vortex trajectory. Numerical tests show that, using Courant–Friedrichs–Lewy (CFL) number of 10 or 30 with the developed BILU implicit scheme can be 6–7 times faster than an explicit scheme. The importance of solution acceleration schemes that increase the permitted time‐step is illustrated by comparing the evolving wake structures at different stages of the calculation. In contrast to fixed wing simulations, the extent of the wake structures is shown to require resolution of large physical time. This observation explains the poor performance that is obtained when employing convergence acceleration strategies originally intended for solution of equilibrium problems, such as the multigrid methods. Using the upstream polynomial approximation a series of accurate two‐dimensional explicit numerical schemes is developed for the solution of the convection–diffusion equation. A third‐order polynomial approximation (TOP) of the convection term and a consistent second‐order approximation of the diffusion term are combined in a single‐step flux‐difference algorithm. Stability analysis confirms that the TOP‐12 scheme satisfies the CFL condition for two dimensions. Using smaller and narrower flux stencils compared to algorithms of similar accuracy, the TOP‐12 scheme is more efficient in terms of computations per single node. Numerical tests and comparison with other well‐known algorithms show a high performance of the developed schemes. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents a convection–diffusion‐reaction (CDR) model for solving magnetic induction equations and incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. For purposes of increasing the prediction accuracy, the general solution to the one‐dimensional constant‐coefficient CDR equation is employed. For purposes of extending this discrete formulation to two‐dimensional analysis, the alternating direction implicit solution algorithm is applied. Numerical tests that are amenable to analytic solutions were performed in order to validate the proposed scheme. Results show good agreement with the analytic solutions and high rate of convergence. Like many magnetohydrodynamic studies, the Hartmann–Poiseuille problem is considered as a benchmark test to validate the code. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents a detailed multi‐methods comparison of the spatial errors associated with finite difference, finite element and finite volume semi‐discretizations of the scalar advection–diffusion equation. The errors are reported in terms of non‐dimensional phase and group speed, discrete diffusivity, artificial diffusivity, and grid‐induced anisotropy. It is demonstrated that Fourier analysis provides an automatic process for separating the discrete advective operator into its symmetric and skew‐symmetric components and characterizing the spectral behaviour of each operator. For each of the numerical methods considered, asymptotic truncation error and resolution estimates are presented for the limiting cases of pure advection and pure diffusion. It is demonstrated that streamline upwind Petrov–Galerkin and its control‐volume finite element analogue, the streamline upwind control‐volume method, produce both an artificial diffusivity and a concomitant phase speed adjustment in addition to the usual semi‐discrete artifacts observed in the phase speed, group speed and diffusivity. The Galerkin finite element method and its streamline upwind derivatives are shown to exhibit super‐convergent behaviour in terms of phase and group speed when a consistent mass matrix is used in the formulation. In contrast, the CVFEM method and its streamline upwind derivatives yield strictly second‐order behaviour. In Part II of this paper, we consider two‐dimensional semi‐discretizations of the advection–diffusion equation and also assess the affects of grid‐induced anisotropy observed in the non‐dimensional phase speed, and the discrete and artificial diffusivities. Although this work can only be considered a first step in a comprehensive multi‐methods analysis and comparison, it serves to identify some of the relative strengths and weaknesses of multiple numerical methods in a common analysis framework. A high‐order accurate solution method for complex geometries is developed for two‐dimensional flows using the stream function–vorticity formulation. High‐order accurate spectrally optimized compact schemes along with appropriate boundary schemes are used for spatial discretization while a two‐level backward Euler implicit scheme is used for the time integration. The linear system of equations for stream function and vorticity are solved by an inner iteration while contravariant velocities constitute outer iterations. The effect of curvilinear grids on the solution accuracy is studied. The method is used to compute Cartesian and inclined driven cavity, flow in a triangular cavity and viscous flow in constricted channel. Benchmark‐like accuracy is obtained in all the problems with fewer grid points compared to reported studies. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We propose, in this paper, a finite volume scheme to compute the solution of the convection–diffusion equation on unstructured and possibly non‐conforming grids. The diffusive fluxes are approximated using the recently published SUSHI scheme in its cell centred version, that reaches a second‐order spatial convergence rate for the Laplace equation on any unstructured two‐dimensional/three‐dimensional grids. As in the MUSCL method, the numerical convective fluxes are built with a prediction‐limitation process, which ensures that the discrete maximum principle is satisfied for pure convection problems. The limitation does not involve any geometrical reconstruction, thus allowing the use of completely general grids, in any space dimension. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper we present a class of semi‐discretization finite difference schemes for solving the transient convection–diffusion equation in two dimensions. The distinct feature of these scheme developments is to transform the unsteady convection–diffusion (CD) equation to the inhomogeneous steady convection–diffusion‐reaction (CDR) equation after using different time‐stepping schemes for the time derivative term. For the sake of saving memory, the alternating direction implicit scheme of Peaceman and Rachford is employed so that all calculations can be carried out within the one‐dimensional framework. For the sake of increasing accuracy, the exact solution for the one‐dimensional CDR equation is employed in the development of each scheme. Therefore, the numerical error is attributed primarily to the temporal approximation for the one‐dimensional problem. Development of the proposed time‐stepping schemes is rooted in the Taylor series expansion. All higher‐order time derivatives are replaced with spatial derivatives through use of the model differential equation under investigation. Spatial derivatives with orders higher than two are not taken into account for retaining the linear production term in the convection–diffusion‐reaction differential system. The proposed schemes with second, third and fourth temporal accuracy orders have been theoretically explored by conducting Fourier and dispersion analyses and numerically validated by solving three test problems with analytic solutions. A non‐dissipative and very accurate one‐dimensional upwind leapfrog method was successfully extended to higher‐order and multi‐dimensional acoustic equations. The governing equations in characteristic form and staggered grid were utilized to preserve the accuracy. Fourier analysis was performed to find the accurate scheme for acoustics and the resultant two‐dimensional methods were successfully applied to several classical test cases. We present an eigen‐decomposition of the quasi‐linear convective flux formulation of the completely coupled Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes and turbulence model equations. Based on these results, we formulate different approximate Riemann solvers that can be used as numerical flux functions in a DG discretization. The effect of the different strategies on the solution accuracy is investigated with numerical examples. The actual computations are performed using a p‐multigrid algorithm. To this end, we formulate a framework with a backward‐Euler smoother in which the linear systems are solved with a general preconditioned Krylov method. We present matrix‐free implementations and memory‐lean line‐Jacobi preconditioners and compare the effects of some parameter choices. In particular, p‐multigrid is found to be less efficient than might be expected from recent findings by other authors. This might be due to the consideration of turbulent flow. The weak Lagrange–Galerkin finite element method for the two‐dimensional shallow water equations on adaptive unstructured grids is presented. The equations are written in conservation form and the domains are discretized using triangular elements. Lagrangian methods integrate the governing equations along the characteristic curves, thus being well suited for resolving the non‐linearities introduced by the advection operator of the fluid dynamics equations. An additional fortuitous consequence of using Lagrangian methods is that the resulting spatial operator is self‐adjoint, thereby justifying the use of a Galerkin formulation; this formulation has been proven to be optimal for such differential operators. The weak Lagrange–Galerkin method automatically takes into account the dilation of the control volume, thereby resulting in a conservative scheme. The use of linear triangular elements permits the construction of accurate (by virtue of the second‐order spatial and temporal accuracies of the scheme) and efficient (by virtue of the less stringent Courant–Friedrich–Lewy (CFL) condition of Lagrangian methods) schemes on adaptive unstructured triangular grids. Lagrangian methods are natural candidates for use with adaptive unstructured grids because the resolution of the grid can be increased without having to decrease the time step in order to satisfy stability. An advancing front adaptive unstructured triangular mesh generator is presented. The highlight of this algorithm is that the weak Lagrange–Galerkin method is used to project the conservation variables from the old mesh onto the newly adapted mesh. In addition, two new schemes for computing the characteristic curves are presented: a composite mid‐point rule and a general family of Runge–Kutta schemes. Results for the two‐dimensional advection equation with and without time‐dependent velocity fields are illustrated to confirm the accuracy of the particle trajectories. Results for the two‐dimensional shallow water equations on a non‐linear soliton wave are presented to illustrate the power and flexibility of this strategy. A particle–gridless hybrid method for the analysis of incompressible flows is presented. The numerical scheme consists of Lagrangian and Eulerian phases as in an arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) method, where a new‐time physical property at an arbitrary position is determined by introducing an artificial velocity. For the Lagrangian calculation, the moving‐particle semi‐implicit (MPS) method is used. Diffusion and pressure gradient terms of the Navier–Stokes equation are calculated using the particle interaction models of the MPS method. As an incompressible condition, divergence of velocity is used while the particle number density is kept constant in the MPS method. For the Eulerian calculation, an accurate and stable convection scheme is developed. This convection scheme is based on a flow directional local grid so that it can be applied to multi‐dimensional convection problems easily. A two‐dimensional pure convection problem is calculated and a more accurate and stable solution is obtained compared with other schemes. The particle–gridless hybrid method is applied to the analysis of sloshing problems. The amplitude and period of sloshing are predicted accurately by the present method. The range of the occurrence of self‐induced sloshing predicted by the present method shows good agreement with the experimental data. Calculations have succeeded even for the higher injection velocity range, where the grid method fails to simulate. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has established itself as an alternative approach to solve the fluid flow equations. In this work we combine LBM with the conventional finite volume method (FVM), and propose a non‐iterative hybrid method for the simulation of compressible flows. LBM is used to calculate the inter‐cell face fluxes and FVM is used to calculate the node parameters. The hybrid method is benchmarked for several one‐dimensional and two‐dimensional test cases. The results obtained by the hybrid method show a steeper and more accurate shock profile as compared with the results obtained by the widely used Godunov scheme or by a representative flux vector splitting scheme. Additional features of the proposed scheme are that it can be implemented on a non‐uniform grid, study of multi‐fluid problems is possible, and it is easily extendable to multi‐dimensions. These features have been demonstrated in this work. The proposed method is therefore robust and can possibly be applied to a variety of compressible flow situations. In this paper, proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is combined with the Petrov–Galerkin least squares mixed finite element (PLSMFE) method to derive an optimizing reduced PLSMFE formulation for the non‐stationary conduction–convection problems. Error estimates between the optimizing reduced PLSMFE solutions based on POD and classical PLSMFE solutions are presented. The optimizing reduced PLSMFE formulation can circumvent the constraint of Babu?ka–Brezzi condition so that the combination of finite element subspaces can be chosen freely and allow optimal‐order error estimates to be obtained. Numerical simulation examples have shown that the errors between the optimizing reduced PLSMFE solutions and the classical PLSMFE solutions are consistent with theoretical results. Moreover, they have also shown the feasibility and efficiency of the POD method. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, we develop a finite element model for solving the convection–diffusion‐reaction equation in two dimensions with an aim to enhance the scheme stability without compromising consistency. Reducing errors of false diffusion type is achieved by adding an artificial term to get rid of three leading mixed derivative terms in the Petrov–Galerkin formulation. The finite element model of the Petrov–Galerkin type, while maintaining convective stability, is modified to suppress oscillations about the sharp layer by employing the M‐matrix theory. To validate this monotonic model, we consider test problems which are amenable to analytic solutions. Good agreement is obtained with both one‐ and two‐dimensional problems, thus validating the method. Other problems suitable for benchmarking the proposed model are also investigated. Problems in the characteristic‐wise flux‐split based finite difference method when compressible flows with contact discontinuities or material interfaces are computed were presented and analyzed. The current analysis showed the following: (i) Even with the local characteristic decomposition technique, numerical errors could be caused by point‐wise flux vector splitting (FVS) methods, such as the Steger–Warming FVS or the van Leer FVS. Therefore, the Lax–Friedrichs type FVS method is required. (ii) If the isobars of a material are vertical lines, the combination of using the local characteristic decomposition and the global Lax–Friedrichs FVS can avoid velocity and pressure oscillations of contact discontinuities in this material for weighted essentially non‐oscillatory (WENO) schemes. (iii) For problems with material interfaces, the quasi‐conservative approach can be realized using characteristic‐wise flux‐split based finite difference WENO schemes if nonlinear WENO schemes in genuinely nonlinear characteristic fields can be guaranteed to be the same and the decomposition equation representing material interfaces is discretized properly. This paper presents a stabilized extended finite element method (XFEM) based fluid formulation to embed arbitrary fluid patches into a fixed background fluid mesh. The new approach is highly beneficial when it comes to computational grid generation for complex domains, as it allows locally increased resolutions independent from size and structure of the background mesh. Motivating applications for such a domain decomposition technique are complex fluid‐structure interaction problems, where an additional boundary layer mesh is used to accurately capture the flow around the structure. The objective of this work is to provide an accurate and robust XFEM‐based coupling for low‐ as well as high‐Reynolds‐number flows. Our formulation is built from the following essential ingredients: Coupling conditions on the embedded interface are imposed weakly using Nitsche's method supported by extra terms to guarantee mass conservation and to control the convective mass transport across the interface for transient viscous‐dominated and convection‐dominated flows. Residual‐based fluid stabilizations in the interior of the fluid subdomains and accompanying face‐oriented fluid and ghost‐penalty stabilizations in the interface zone stabilize the formulation in the entire fluid domain. A detailed numerical study of our stabilized embedded fluid formulation, including an investigation of variants of Nitsche's method for viscous flows, shows optimal error convergence for viscous‐dominated and convection‐dominated flow problems independent of the interface position. Challenging two‐dimensional and three‐dimensional numerical examples highlight the robustness of our approach in all flow regimes: benchmark computations for laminar flow around a cylinder, a turbulent driven cavity flow at Re = 10000 and the flow interacting with a three‐dimensional flexible wall.
