Glassy and rubbery epoxy-clay nanocomposites were synthesized by using various montmorillonite organoclays in order to investigate and compare the effect of the type of alkylammonium ion clay modifier on the structure and properties of the nanocomposites. The organoclays studied were the Nanomer I.28E and I.30E and the Cloisite C10A, C15A and C20A. The functionality (acidity), size and shape of backbone chain, hydrophobicity and polarity were the varying parameters of the organic modifiers that were correlated to the ability of the organoclays to form highly intercalated or exfoliated nanocomposites and to the changes observed in the mechanical (tensile measurements), thermo-mechanical (DMA) and thermal (TGA) properties of the epoxy nanocomposites. The primary alkylammonium ion modifiers with reactive/acidic hydrogen atoms, compared to the quaternary octadecyl, dihydrogenated tallow and benzyl-substituted hydrogenated tallow ammonium ions, were the most effective for the formation of exfoliated clay glassy and rubbery epoxy nanocomposites which exhibited improved properties compared to the pristine epoxy polymers.  相似文献

This work describes the role of quaternary alkylammonium amendment length on sorption mechanisms of modified bentonites for four nonionic organic compounds; benzene, carbon tetrachloride, TCE, and 1,2-DCB. Tetramethyl to tetrabutyl alkyl amendments were studied and an important mechanistic shift occurred at the propyl chain length for all four solutes studied. Three- and four-carbon-chain functional groups on the ammonium cation resulted in a linear, rather than a curvilinear isotherm. The uptake on tetrapropyl and tetrabutylammonium clays was noncompetitive in binary systems and showed negligible sensitivity to temperature variations, indicating the linear isotherms describe a partitioning uptake mechanism for these organoclays. The adsorptive organoclays (tetramethyl and tetraethylammonium clays) were fit with the Dubinin-Radushkevich equation to investigate the application of the Polanyi-Manes potential theory to organoclay adsorption. It was found that TCE and carbon tetrachloride, with similar physical and chemical characteristics, behaved according to the Polanyi-Manes theory. Benzene showed an anomalously high adsorption volume limit, possibly due to dense packing in the adsorption space or chemisorption to the short chain alkyl groups.  相似文献

High resolution thermogravimetric analysis (TG) has attracted much attention in the synthesis of organoclays and its applications. In this study, organoclays were synthesised through ion exchange of a single cationic surfactant for sodium ions, and characterised by methods including X-ray diffraction (XRD) and TG. The changes of surface properties in montmorillonite (MMT) and organoclays intercalated with surfactant were determined using XRD through the changes in the basal spacing. The TG was applied in this study to investigate more information of the configuration and structural changes in the organoclays with thermal decomposition. There are four different decompositions steps in differential thermogravimetric curves. The obtained TG steps are relevant to the arrangement of the surfactant molecules intercalated in MMT and the thermal analysis indicates the thermal stability of surfactant modified clays. This investigation provides new insights into the properties of organoclays and is important in the synthesis and processing of organoclays for environmental applications.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to compare the influence of organocations with different length of alkylammonium chain on the structural stability of clays towards mechanochemical treatment. An industrial product JP A030 (Envigeo, Inc., Slovakia) based on Jelšovy Potok bentonite (Slovakia) and three organoclays prepared from this material via ion exchange with tetramethylammonium, octyltrimethylammonium and octadecyltrimethylammonium cations (TMA-JP A030, OTMA-JP A030 and ODTMA-JP A030, respectively) were ground for 1–20 min in a high-energy planetary mill. The products were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis, thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. The long-chain organic cations apparently enhance the structural stability of bentonite during high-energy grinding.  相似文献

A unique class of nanoclays was prepared by modification of pristine clays or organoclays (Cloisite C20A) with transition metal ions (TMIs). The composition, structure, morphology and thermal properties of TMI-modified nanoclays were investigated by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), elemental analysis (EA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. The content of TMIs in modified clays was found to be close to the limiting value of ion exchange capacity. SEM and X-ray results confirmed that TMIs were located between the mineral layers instead of being adsorbed on the surface of clay particles. TGA results indicated that the TMI treatment of organoclays could significantly increase the thermal stability, which was more pronounced in air than in nitrogen. Temperature-resolved SAXS measurements revealed that the presence of TMIs increased the onset temperature of structural degradation. The higher thermal stability of TMI-modified organoclays can be attributed to the change in the thermal degradation mechanism, resulting in a decrease in the yield of volatile products and the formation of char facilitated by the presence of catalytically active TMIs.  相似文献

Four organic-modified clays based on a SWy-2 montmorillonite were prepared by embedding ammonium organic derivatives with different chelating functionalities (NH(2), COOH, SH or CS(2)) in the interlayer space of montmorillonite. Organic molecules such as (a) hexamethylenediamine, (b) 2-(dimethylamino)ethenethiol, (c) 5-aminovaleric acid and (d) hexamethylenediamine-dithiocarbamate were used for the clay modification in order to study the effect of the chelating functionality on heavy metal ions binding from aqueous solutions. The organoclays were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared (FTIR) and NMR spectroscopies. The experimental data showed that the organic molecules are intercalated into the interlamelar space with the long dimension parallel to the clay sheets. Their sorbing properties were evaluated for the removal of heavy metals, Pb, Cd and Zn, from aqueous solutions as a function of the pH. When compared with the unmodified SWy-2 montmorillonite, the modified clays show significant improvement in terms of sorbing selectivity as well as of metal loading capacity. The fit to adsorption data by a Surface Complexation Model shows that the intercalated molecules act as specific binding sites in the clay. These contribute additional sorption capacity which is additive to the variable charge edge-sites of the clay in competition with the permanent charge sites.  相似文献

The thermal behaviour of organoclays, and especially their organic treatment, is an important issue in polymer nanocomposite preparation and their fire retardant properties. The thermal behaviour of the organomodifier is strongly affected by the different composition parameters of the clays. Thus the thermal degradation, in inert and in oxidative atmosphere, of natural montmorillonite and synthetic fluorohectorite both exchanged with polar and non-polar organomodifiers was studied using a combined thermogravimetry/Fourier transform infrared and a flash pyrolysis GC-MS system. Decomposition and charring mechanisms of the organic molecules in the clays are proposed for each kind of clay and a relationship between the composition of the clays and the kinetics of the decomposition reactions is found. Furthermore, it is shown that the charring-volatilization competition on heating organoclays in the presence of oxygen depends on the structure of the clay, the confined or unconfined position of the organic molecules and their polarity.  相似文献

This paper aims at showing the interest of organoclays (clay minerals containing organic groups covalently attached to the inorganic particles) as suitable host matrices likely to immobilize enzymes onto electrode surfaces for biosensing applications. The organoclays used in this work were natural Cameroonian smectites grafted with either aminopropyl (AP) or trimethylpropylammonium (TMPA) groups. The first ones were exploited for their ability to anchor biomolecules by covalent bonding while the second category exhibited favorable electrostatic interactions with negatively charged enzymes due to ion exchange properties that were pointed out here by means of multisweep cyclic voltammetry. AP-clay materials were applied to the immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOD) and TMPA-clays for polyphenol oxidase (PPO) anchoring. When deposited onto the surface of platinum or glassy carbon electrodes as enzyme/organoclay films, these systems were evaluated as biosensing electrochemical devices for detection of glucose and catechol chosen as model analytes. The advantageous features of these organoclays were discussed by comparison to the performance of related film electrodes made of non-functionalized clays. It appeared that organoclays provide a favorable environment to enzymes activity, as highlighted from the biosensors characteristics and determination of Michaelis-Menten constants.  相似文献

Morphological and rheological properties of new ternary nanocomposites based on ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers (EVA), commercial organo-modified clays (organoclays) and purified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs), prepared via direct melt blending, have been evaluated. For sake of comparison, the corresponding binary compositions, i.e., EVA filled with either organoclays or MWNTs, have been investigated as well. While extensive exfoliation can be observed for binary EVA/clay nanocomposites, the addition of MWNTs appears to limit clay exfoliation. Rheological properties show that both clay and MWNTs increase the elastic modulus of the nanocomposites, reflecting the high degree of nanoparticle interconnectivity that can be found in these materials.  相似文献

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in combination with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high-resolution thermogravimetric analysis (HRTG) has been used to investigate the surfactant distribution within the organoclays prepared at different surfactant concentrations. This study demonstrates that the surfactant distribution within the organoclays depends strongly on the surfactant loadings. In the organoclays prepared at relative low surfactant concentrations, the surfactant cations mainly locate in the clay interlayer, whereas the surfactants occupy both the clay interlayer space and the interparticle pores in the organoclays prepared at high surfactant concentrations. This is in accordance with the dramatic pore volume decrease of organoclays compared to those of starting clays. XPS survey scans show that, at low surfactant concentration (<1.0 CEC), the ion exchange between Na+ and HDTMA+ is dominant, whereas both cations and ion pairs occur in the organoclays prepared at high concentrations (>1.0 CEC). High-resolution XPS spectra show that the modification of clay with surfactants has prominent influences on the binding energies of the atoms in both clays and surfactants, and nitrogen is the most sensitive to the surfactant distribution within the organoclays.  相似文献

Layered silicate/natural rubber composites were prepared by direct polymer melt intercalation. Na‐montmorillonite Kunipia‐F and its organic derivates (organo‐clays) prepared by ion exchange were used as clay fillers. Silica (SiO2) Ultrasil VN3, a filler commonly used in the rubber industry, was used in combination with clay fillers. The effect of clay or organo‐clay loading from 1 up to 10 phr without (0 phr) or with silica (15 phr) showed significant improvement of the tensile properties (stress at break, strain at break and modulus M100). Modification of montmorillonite by three alkylammonium cations with the same length of alkylammonium chain (18 carbons) and different structure resulted in altered reinforcing and plasticizing effects of the filler in composites with rubber matrix. A nonionic surfactant, triethylene glycol mono-n-decyl ether (C(10)E(3)), characterized by its lamellar phase state, was introduced in the interlayer of a Na-montmorillonite clay at several concentrations. The synthesized organoclays were characterized by small-angle X-ray scattering in conjunction with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and adsorption isotherms. Experiments showed that a bilayer of C(10)E(3) was intercalated into the interlayer space of the naturally exchanged Na-montmorillonite, resulting in the aggregation of the lyotropic liquid crystal state in the lamellar phase. This behavior strongly differs from previous observations of confinement of nonionic surfactants in clays where the expansion of the interlayer space was limited to two monolayers parallel to the silicate surface and cationic surfactants in clays where the intercalation of organic compounds is introduced into the clay galleries through ion exchange. The confinement of a bilayer of C(10)E(3) nonionic surfactant in clays offers new perspectives for the realization of hybrid nanomaterials, since the synthesized organoclays preserve the electrostatic characteristics of the clays, thus allowing further ion exchange while presenting at the same time a hydrophobic surface and a maximum opening of the interlayer space for the adsorption of neutral organic molecules of important size with functional properties.  相似文献

Surfactant modified montmorillonitic clays synthesized by ion exchange using the hydrothermal reaction method have been compared using XRD and thermal analysis. X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows the changes in the surface properties of organoclays through expansion with surfactant loading. A polynomial relationship exists between the basal spacing and the CEC loading described by the equation y=0.3232x(2) + 0.2052x+1.2834 with R(2)=0.9955. Different arrangements of the surfactant molecules in the organoclays are inferred from the changes in basal spacings. para-Nitrophenol also causes the expansion of the montmorillonite clay and affects the arrangements of the surfactant molecules within the clay layers. Changes in the surfactant molecular arrangements were analyzed by thermogravimetry. Additional thermal decomposition steps were observed when para-nitrophenol is adsorbed on the organoclay.  相似文献

Polyurethane acrylate (PUA)/clay nanocomposites were prepared by UV‐curing from a series of styrene‐based polymerically‐modified clays and PUA resin. Effect of the chemical structure of the polymeric surfactants on the morphology and tensile properties of nanocomposites has been explored. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) experimental results indicated that surfactants having hydroxyl or amino groups show better dispersion and some of the clay platelets were fully exfoliated. However, the composites formed from pristine clay and other polymerically‐modified clays without hydroxyl or amino groups typically contained both tactoids and intercalated structure. The mechanical properties of PUA composites were greatly improved where the organoclays dispersed well. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) were carried out to examine the thermal properties of the composites. The results showed that the loading of polymerically‐modified clays do not effect the thermal stability, but increased the Tgs of PUA/clay composites. Nanocomposites reinforced with hybrid fillers of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and clays were developed, aiming at enhancing the dispersion of nanofillers with balanced mechanical properties while lowering the cost of the final product. Polypropylene-based nanocomposites were prepared by the master batch dilution technique with varying combinations of CNTs and clays as fillers by using commercially available highly concentrated master batches of polypropylene/organoclays and polypropylene/multiwalled carbon nanotubes using high-shear twin-screw extrusion. Their mechanical and morphological properties were then evaluated. It was shown that the addition of hybrid filler to polypropylene enhanced the ductility and flexural properties of nanocomposites, confirming the synergistic effect of nanofillers as a multifunctional fillers. The novelty of this work lies in the synergy arising from the combination of two nanofillers with unique dimensions and aspect ratios as well as different dispersion characteristics, which have not been specifically considered previously.  相似文献

The H-bonding in alkylammonium complexes of phosphonate cavitands were studied by mass spectrometric methods and theoretical calculations. The alkylammonium ions included primary, secondary, and tertiary methyl- and ethylammonium ions. Their complexation with mono-, tetra-, and two di-phosphonate cavitands, which differ according to the number and position of H-bond acceptor P = O groups, was evaluated by using different competition experiments, energy-resolved CID, gas-phase H/D-exchange, and ligand-exchange reactions, together with ab initio theoretical optimization of the complexes. The phosphonate cavitands with two or more adjacent P = O groups were found to be selective towards secondary alkylammonium ions, due to simultaneous formation of two stable hydrogen bonds. In the ion-molecule reactions (both H/D- and ligand-exchange), the formation of two stable hydrogen bonds was observed either to slow down the reaction or to completely prevent it. This was, however, limited to situations where two hydrogen bonds are formed between the H-bond donor sites of the alkyl ammonium ion and the vicinal H-bond acceptor sites of the cavitand.  相似文献

We present the synthesis, characterization by IR, TGA, single crystal X-ray structure and magnetic properties of a novel series of NaCl-type frameworks of [AmineH(+)][Mn(HCOO)(3)(-)], templated by alkylammonium. The anionic NaCl-framework of [Mn(HCOO)(3)(-)] is counter-balanced by the alkylammonium cations located in the cavities of the framework to which they are hydrogen-bonded. The divalent manganese ions have octahedral geometry and are bridged by the formate in an anti-anti mode of coordination. All the compounds exhibit long-range antiferromagnetism below 9 K with a slight non-collinear arrangement of the moments. The canting, likely due to second-order spin-orbit coupling, is via a Dzyaloshinski-Moriya antisymmetric exchange mechanism. A spin-flop is observed in each case at fairly low fields. An orthorhombic to monoclinic transformation was observed for the protonated cyclotrimethyleneamine that is accompanied by localization of the cations into two positions below 240 K from the rapid dynamic flipping of the ring observed at room temperature.  相似文献

Organoclays were synthesised through ion exchange of a single surfactant for sodium ions, and characterised by a range of method including X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The change in surface properties of montmorillonite and organoclays intercalated with the surfactant, tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TDTMA) were determined using XRD through the change in basal spacing and the expansion occurred by the adsorbed p-nitrophenol. The changes of interlayer spacing were observed in TEM. In addition, the surface measurement such as specific surface area and pore volume was measured and calculated using BET method, this suggested the loaded surfactant is highly important to determine the sorption mechanism onto organoclays. The collected results of XPS provided the chemical composition of montmorillonite and organoclays, and the high-resolution XPS spectra offered the chemical states of prepared organoclays with binding energy. Using TGA and FT-IR, the confirmation of intercalated surfactant was investigated. The collected data from various techniques enable an understanding of the changes in structure and surface properties. This study is of importance to provide mechanisms for the adsorption of organic molecules, especially in contaminated environmental sites and polluted waters.  相似文献

Two different kinds of organoclays were prepared by mixing a pristine montmorillonite and a double‐chain ammonium salt in many different thermoplastic or elastomeric polymers. Independently of the chemical nature of the considered polymers, the obtained organoclays presented a basal spacing of 4 or 6 nm, when the mixing occurred in the absence or in the presence of a small amount of stearic acid (SA), respectively. X‐ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared measurements support the hypothesis that these two kinds of organoclays correspond to paraffin‐type tilted and perpendicular bi‐layer intercalates, respectively. The co‐intercalation of SA molecules with the double‐chain amphiphile is suggested, to explain the observed expansion of the clay interlayer distance. The obtained results suggest an easy way to control the organoclay structure in polymer composites. Moreover, the authors on the basis of these results propose a criticism to the extensive literature that systematically explains most d basal spacing increase observed for clays in polymer with the penetration of apolar polymer chains in the clay interlayer space. The cetyltrimethylammonium hydroxide (C16TMAOH) solution was proposed for the preparation of organoclays. Montmorillonite clay was acid activated at different acid/clay (a/c) (in mass) ratios, then treated with alkaline (sodium hydroxide) solution before being reacted with C16TMAOH solution. The acid activation caused a reduction in the number of cation exchange sites, and hence improved the exfoliation of the silicate sheets at higher pH values. The basal spacing increased significantly from 2.20 to 4.01 nm, and depended on the a/c ratios. The acid-activated clays with a/c ratios greater than 0.3 adsorbed significant amounts of C16TMA cations with a basal spacing of 4.01 nm compared with the non-acid-activated montmorillonite (2.51 nm). Meanwhile, the treatment of NaOH solution yielded clays with similar properties to that of the raw used clay. The XRF data, FT-IR, and 29Si MAS-NMR techniques confirmed that the resulting amorphous silica during the acid activation was dissolved, and accompanied by a dramatical reduction in the surface areas. Similar amounts of C16TMA cations were adsorbed, i.e., close to 1 mmol g?1, with a single basal spacing of 2.52 nm, independently of the treated acid-activated clays. The in-situ powder XRD studies revealed that an increase of the basal spacing to 4.20 nm was observed at intermediate temperatures ranging from 50 to 150 °C for organo-acid-activated clays with basal spacing of 4.01 nm, while a continuous decrease of the basal spacing was observed for organoclays with a basal spacing of 2.52 nm. At higher temperatures greater than 250 °C, the decomposition of the surfactant occurs, and the basal spacing decreases to a value of about 1.4 nm.  相似文献
