To study the brittle–ductile transition (BDT) of polypropylene (PP)/ethylene–propylene–diene monomer (EPDM) blends induced by size, temperature, and time, the toughness of the PP/EPDM blends was investigated over wide ranges of EPDM content, temperature, and strain rate. The toughness of the blends was determined from the tensile fracture energy of the side‐edge notched samples. The concept of interparticle distance (ID) was introduced into this study to probe the size effect on the BDT of PP/EPDM blends, whereas the effect of time corresponded to that of strain rate. The BDT induced by size, temperature, and time was observed in the fracture energy versus ID, temperature, and strain rate. The critical BDT temperatures for various EPDM contents at different initial strain rates were obtained from these transitions. The critical interparticle distance (IDc) increased nonlinearly with increasing temperature, and when the initial strain rate was lower, the IDc was larger. Moreover, the variation of the reciprocal of the initial strain rate with the reciprocal of temperature followed different straight lines for various EPDM contents. These straight lines were with the same slope. Furthermore, a diagram at critical BDT points in three dimensions (ID, T, and initial strain rate) was given for the PP/EPDM blends. The brittle and ductile zones are clearly shown in this diagram. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 42: 1433–1440, 2004  相似文献

Blends of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide)/nylon 6 alloys based on ethylene-propylene-diene elastomer (EPDM) grafted with maleic anhydride (MA) (EPDM-g-MA), EPDM grafted with glycidyl methacrylate (EPDM-g-GMA), and styrene-ethylene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer grafted with MA (SEBS-g-MA) were prepared via melt extruction, and morphology, mechanical properties, and rheology were studied. The compatibilizing effects of functionalized elastomers on the PPO/nylon 6 alloys were proved by DSC analysis and confirmed by the significant improvement in the notched Izod impact strength. Toughening was resulted from the smaller particle size and finer dispersion of EPDM in the PPO/nylon 6 matrix as well as a novel network structure of SEBS-g-MA domain in matrix. The notched Izod impact strength of the blends exhibited an optimum value when the extent of MA or GMA graft ratio of EPDM varied, which was an order of magnitude higher than the non-toughened alloys. The morphology revealed that the size of EPDM particles decreased with an increase in graft ratio of MA or GMA onto EPDM. Rheology investigation indicated that the MA or GMA moieties on EPDM reacted with the amine groups of nylon 6, which increased the molecular weight and the degree of branching, and thus resulted in an increase in the viscosity of the blends. This proved the reactive compatibilization between functionalized EPDM and PPO/nylon 6 matrix.  相似文献

The properties of chlorosulphonated polyethylene (CSM) rubber, acrylonitrile rubber (NBR) and their blend (50/50 w/w) were studied. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) studies supported that CSM/NBR rubber blend is self curable, when cross-linking takes place between acrylonitrile groups of NBR and –SO2Cl groups or in situ generated allyl chloride moieties of CSM. The thermal stability of vulcanizates was analyzed in nitrogen by thermogravimetry. It was found that the initial degradation temperature of elastomer based on CSM rubber is lower than of pure NBR rubber. By adding NBR to CSM rubbers, the degradation temperature of crosslinked material increased, indicating higher thermal stability. The activation energy for the degradation are determined using the Arrhenius equation The activation energies for the rubber blends are higher than for elastomers based on pure rubbers. It was found that the mass loss of the blends at any temperature was between those of the pure rubbers. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used for the glass transition temperature determination. It is estimated thermodynamic immiscibility of NBR/CSM blend based on noticed two different glass transition temperatures, corresponding to CSM and NBR rubbers.  相似文献

Modification of epoxy resin using reactive liquid (ATBN) rubber   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Epoxy resins are widely utilised as high performance thermosetting resins for many industrial applications but unfortunately some are characterised by a relatively low toughness. In this respect, many efforts have been made to improve the toughness of cured epoxy resins by the introduction of rigid particles, reactive rubbers, interpenetrating polymer networks and engineering thermoplastics within the matrix. In the present work liquid amine-terminated butadiene acrylonitrile (ATBN) copolymers containing 16% acrylonitrile is added at different contents to improve the toughness of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A epoxy resin using polyaminoimidazoline as a curing agent. The chemical reactions suspected to take place during the modification of the epoxy resin were monitored and evidenced using a Fourier transform infrared. The glass transition temperature (Tg) was measured using a differential scanning calorimeter. The mechanical behaviour of the modified epoxy resin was evaluated in terms of Izod impact strength (IS), critical stress intensity factor, and tensile properties at different modifier contents. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to elucidate the mechanisms of deformation and toughening in addition to other morphological features. Finally, the adhesive properties of the modified epoxy resin were measured in terms of tensile shear strength (TSS).When modifying epoxy resin with liquid rubber (ATBN), all reactivity characteristics (gel time and temperature, cure time and exotherm peak) decreased. The infrared analysis evidenced the occurrence of a chemical reaction between the two components. Addition of ATBN led to a decrease in either the glass transition temperature and stress at break accompanied with an increase in elongation at break and the appearance of some yielding. As expected, the tensile modulus decreased slightly from 1.85 to about 1.34 GPa with increasing ATBN content; whereas a 3-fold increase in Izod IS was obtained by just adding 12.5 phr ATBN compared to the unfilled resin. It is obvious that upon addition of ATBN, the Izod IS increased drastically from 0.85 to 2.86 kJ/m2 and from 4.19 to 14.26 kJ/m2 for notched and unnotched specimens respectively while KIC varies from 0.91 to 1.49 MPa m1/2 (1.5-fold increase). Concerning the adhesive properties, the TSS increased from 9.14 to 15.96 MPa just by adding 5 phr ATBN. Finally SEM analysis results suggest rubber particles cavitation and localised plastic shear yielding induced by the presence of the dispersed rubber particles within the epoxy matrix as the prevailing toughening mechanism.  相似文献

The mechanical properties and the crystal morphological structures of the dynamically photocrosslinked polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) blends have been studied by means of mechanical tests, wide-angle X-ray diffraction(WAXD), and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The dynamically photocrosslinking of the PP/EPDM blends can improve the mechanical properties considerably, especially the notched Izod impact strength at low temperatures. The data obtained from the mechanical tests show that the notched Izod impact strength of the dynamically photocrosslinked sample with 30% EPDM at -20℃ is about six times that of the uncrosslinked sample with the same EPDM component. The results from the gel content, the results of WAXD, and the DSC measurements reveal the enhanced mechanism of the impact strength for the dynamically photocrosslinked PP/EPDM blends as follows: (1) There exists the crosslinking of the EPDM phase in the photocrosslinked PP/EPDM blends ; (2) The β-type crystal structureof PP is formed and the content of α-type crystal decreases with increasing the EPDM component; (3) The graft copolymer of PP-g-EPDM is formed at the interface between the PP and EPDM components. All the above changes of the crystal morphological structures are favorable for increasing the compatibility and enhancing the toughness of the PP/EPDM blends at low temperatures.  相似文献

One-pot hydrothermal reduction of graphene oxide (GO) in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) suspension was performed, wherein GO surface were functionalized by free radicals generated from NMP molecules. The NMP functionalized reduced GO (NMPG) nanosheets were then incorporated into epoxy matrix to prepare epoxy composites. The significant improvement of 100 and 240% in fracture toughness (critical intensity factor, KIC) and fracture energy (critical strain energy release rate, GIC) achieved from single edge notched bending (SENB) test revealed the excellent toughening ability of NMPG. The improved compatibility and interfacial interaction between the epoxy matrix and NMPG yielded∼28, 19 and 51% improvement in tensile strength, Young's and storage modulus, respectively. Thermal stability of pure epoxy and its composites was determined at 5, 10 and 50% weight loss, which showed 30, 27.5 and 29 °C improvement with 0.2 wt% NMPG loading. The work provides a simple method to prepare graphene-based epoxy composites with improved performance.  相似文献

A new series of monoepoxide terminated controlled epoxy networks (CENs) and a corresponding soluble fraction polymer (SFP) were prepared to further investigate the effects of chain termination on epoxy thermoset structure‐property relationships. CENs having an initial molecular weight between crosslinks (Mc,i) of ~3000 g/mol using phenylglycidyl ether (PGE) as the chain terminator have thermal and mechanical properties consistent with previously studied monophenol terminated CENs. Glass transition temperature (Tg) decreases monotonically with PGE concentration (ε), whereas fracture toughness decreases sharply at a critical PGE concentration (εc). A PGE terminated SFP was prepared corresponding to the soluble fraction expected for the CEN composition at εc. The SFP behaves as a weak antiplasticizer in these epoxy thermosets; Tg is reduced and follows the inverse rule of mixtures, and fracture toughness is slightly reduced. By difference it is inferred that most of the deterioration of epoxy thermoset properties resulting from incorporation of chain terminators above εc is a result of the presence of nonelastically active pendant chains and by the increase in Mc. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: Aiming the development of high toughness polymer materials, blends of poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) and poly(butadiene-co-acrylonitrile) (NBR) rubbers, with contents of acrylonitrile (AN) varying from 21 to 45%, were prepared by casting, coprecipitation and monoscrew extrusion followed by injection molding. SAN/NBR blends, prepared in the compositions (w/w) 90/10, 80/20, 70/30, 60/40, and 50/50, were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Izod impact tests. DSC analyses showed that blends with 33% AN NBR prepared by casting, and with 39% AN NBR prepared by coprecipitation, are partially miscible at 60/40, 70/30 and 80/20 (SAN/NBR) compositions and immiscible for 50/50 compositions. On the other hand, 90/10 SAN/NBR systems were totally miscible. The blends with 45% AN NBR prepared by coprecipitation showed partial miscibility to 50/50, 60/40, 70/30 and 90/10 compositions and total miscibility to 80/20 composition. The NBR addition results in a significant increase in the impact resistance, strongly dependent on the blend composition and the NBR AN content. The best result of impact resistance — 75.2 ± 8.6 (kJ · m−2) — was obtained for SAN/NBR 50/50, using 45% AN NBR. This value is 15.7 times bigger than that for pure SAN -4.8 ± 0.7 (kJ · m−2).  相似文献

Polylactide (PLA) was plasticized by polyethylene glycols (PEGs) with five different molecular weights (Mw = 200–20,000 g/mol). The effects of content and molecular weight of PEG on the crystallization and impact properties of PLA were studied by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and V‐notched impact tests, respectively. The results revealed that PEG‐10,000 could significantly improve the crystallization capacity and impact toughness of PLA. When the PEG‐10,000 content ranged from 0 to 20 wt%, the increases in both V‐notched Izod and Charpy impact strengths of PLA/PEG‐10,000 blends were 206.10% and 137.25%, respectively. Meanwhile, the crystallinity of PLA/PEG‐10,000 blends increased from 3.95% to 43.42%. For 10 wt% PEG content, the crystallization and impact properties of PLA/PEG blends mainly depended upon PEG molecular weight. With increasing the Mw of PEG, the crystallinity and impact strength of PLA/PEG blends first decreased and then increased. The introduction of PEG reduced the intermolecular force and enhanced the mobility of PLA chains, thus improving the crystallization capacity and flexibility of PLA.

The study deals with the morphological and thermal analysis of binary rubber blends of acrylonitrile-co-butadiene rubber (NBR) with another polymer. Either ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), chlorosulphonated polyethylene (CSM), or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has been selected for the second phase. Depending on the relative polarity and interaction parameter of the components, the binary blends showed development of a bi-phasic morphology through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Use of different types of thermal analysis techniques revealed that these blends are generally incompatible excepting one of NBR and PVC. Derivative differential scanning calorimetry (DDSC), in place of conventional DSC, has been used to characterize the compatibility behavior of the blends. NBR–PVC shows appearance of only one glass transition temperature (T g) averaging the individual T g’s of the blend components. The partially missible blend of NBR and CSM shows a broadening of T g interval between the phase components, while the immiscible blends of either NBR–EPDM or NBR–EVA do not show any change in T g values corresponding to the individual rubbers of their blend. The experimental T g values were also compared with those calculated theoretically by Fox equation and observed to match closely with each other. Studies have also been made to evaluate the thermal stability of these blends by thermo-gravimetric analysis (TG) and evaluation of activation energy of respective decomposition processes by Flynn and Wall method. Thermo-mechanical analysis (TMA) was found to be effective for comparison of creep recovery and dimensional stability of the blends both at sub-ambient as well as at elevated temperatures.  相似文献

In this work, a considerable low‐temperature toughness enhancement of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was achieved by adding 30 wt% ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber (EPDM) as well as traces of β‐nucleating agent (β‐NAs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The impact strength of the iPP/30 wt% EPDM blend with 0.1 wt% β‐NAs reached 6.57 kJ/m2 at ?20°C, over 2.5 times of pure iPP. A slightly improved impact strength was further found in the β‐nucleated iPP/30 wt% EPDM at the presence of 0.05 wt% CNTs. The presence of traces of CNTs, β‐NAs, and EPDM displayed synergistic low‐temperature toughness reinforcement effect on the iPP blends. The underlying toughening mechanism was attributed to the formation of a great amount of voids and plastic deformation of iPP matrix affected by CNTs, β‐NAs, and EPDM. Our work provided a feasible strategy to significantly increase the low‐temperature toughness of iPP.  相似文献

The previous works on solubility of curatives in rubbers were mainly carried out in natural rubber. Not too much information available on dissimilar rubbers and this is important because most of the compounds today are blends of dissimilar rubbers. Although solubility can be expected to certain level by the previous studies, the current work provides a much precise view in the solubility behavior of curatives. Solubility of sulphur and several accelerators N-cyclohexylbenzothiazole-2-sulphenamide (CBS), N-dicyclohexylbenzothiazole-2-sulphenamide (DCBS), and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) is measured in dicumyl peroxide vulcanised Styrene-Butadiene rubber (SBR), Acrylonitrile-Butadiene rubber (NBR) and Ethylene-Propylene-Diene rubber (EPDM) rubber at room temperature and at 60 °C. The experimental results can be correlated with the calculated solubility parameters δ, as determined using the method of Hoftijzer and Van Krevelen. Results of are used to judge the solubility of curatives in a specific rubber in blends.  相似文献

The intumescent flame retardant (IFR) filled polypropylene (PP) composites were prepared using a twin‐screw extruder. The tensile and impact fracture behavior of the composites were measured at room temperature. It was found that the Young's modulus increased roughly, while the tensile strength decreased slightly with increasing the IFR weight fraction; the toughening effect of the filler on the PP resin was significant. Both the V‐notched Izod impact strength and the V‐notched Charpy impact strength of the PP/IFR composites showed a nonlinear increase with increasing the filler weight fraction (φf) as φf was less than 20%, then it decreased. The limited oxygen index of the composites increases nonlinearly with increasing φf. The relationship between them obeyed a quadratic equation. The impact fracture surface was observed by means of a scanning electronic microscope to understand the toughening mechanisms for the composite systems. Novel epoxy nanocomposites based on a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy, an epoxy functionalized hyperbranched polymer (HTTE) and nano‐Al2O3 were synthesized with the aim of determining the effect of the nano‐Al2O3 particles and HTTE on the structure and properties of epoxy nanocomposites. The mechanical properties, thermal conductivity, bulk resistivity, and thermal stability of the nano‐Al2O3/HTTE/DGEBA ternary composites were evaluated and compared with the corresponding matrix. The improvement in impact properties of these nanocomposites was explained in terms of fracture surface analysis by SEM. The results indicate that the incorporation of nanoparticles and hyperbranched epoxy effectively improved the toughness of epoxy composites without sacrificing thermal conductivity and bulk resistivity compared to the neat epoxy and Al2O3/DGEBA, obtaining a well dispersion of nanoparticles in epoxy matrix and solving the drawbacks for single fillers filled epoxy nanocomposite. The effects of the hyperbranched polyester with hydroxyl end groups (HBPE‐OH) on the curing behavior and toughening performance of a commercial epoxy resin (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, DGEBA) were presented. The addition of HBPE‐OH into DGEBA strongly increased its curing rate and conversion of epoxide group due to the catalytic effect of hydroxyl groups in HBPE‐OH and the low viscosity of the blend at curing temperature. The improvements on impact strength and critical stress intensity factor (or fracture toughness, K1c) were observed with adding HBPE‐OH. The impact strength was 8.04 kJ m?1 when HBPE‐OH reached 15 wt% and the K1c value was approximately two times the value of pure epoxy resin when HBPE‐OH content was 20 wt%. The morphology of the blends was also investigated, which indicated that HBPE‐OH particles, as a second phase in the epoxy matrix, combined with each other as the concentration of HBPE‐OH increased. In this study, thermal and mechanical properties of novel nanocomposite, epoxy resin reinforced with octadecylamine functionalized graphene oxide (GO-ODA) and Sasobit, prepared via creative vacuum shock technique, were investigated. By introducing 1, 3 and 5 wt% Sasobit to the neat epoxy resin, the tensile strength increased remarkably by 104%, 315% and 266%, respectively due to the unique stiff and crystalline structure of Sasobit. In addition, considerable enhancement of 125% in Young's modulus, 351% in toughness, 562% in impact resistance, ~19 °C in thermal stability and ~7 °C in glass transition temperature of epoxy resin with 3 wt% Sasobit loading was demonstrated. The composite containing 3 wt% Sasobit alone, were found to have even superior properties than GO-ODA/epoxy nanocomposite, as surprisingly 3, 2.9, 2.2 and 2 times more improvement, respectively in tensile strength, toughness, impact strength and thermal stability of epoxy resin compared to reinforcement with GO-ODA were obtained.  相似文献

In this work, polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM)/butadiene acrylonitrile rubber (NBR) TPVs with different EPDM/NBR ratios were prepared by the core-shell dynamic vulcanization. The relationship between the core-shell structure and mechanical properties of the TPVs were thoroughly investigated. The formation of core-shell structure by adding NBR is conducive to the mechanical properties of the TPVs. The ratio of EPDM to NBR has an important effect on the structure and performances of the final products, and there is a critical ratio for this effect change. Transmission electron microscope (TEM), tensile test, reprocessing test, ageing test, rheological behavior test and stress relaxation were used to characterize the morphology and properties of the TPVs in detail. It was found that when the ratio of EPDM/NBR was 2:4, the tensile strength increased by ~14% compared with PP/EPDM TPV without NBR. Meanwhile, the reprocessing properties, rheological characteristics and instantaneous tensile deformation, etc. all exhibited sudden changes at this critical ratio.  相似文献

Positron annihilation lifetime measurements were performed on pure polypropylene (PP), ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) rubber, and their blends PP/EPDM with a series of EPDM volume fraction ϕ (= 10–40%). A numerical Laplace inversion technique (i.e., CONTIN algorithm), was employed to obtain the probability distribution functions (PDF) of free-volume radius. We observed that, first, the average free-volume radius in PP/EPDM blends is generally same as that in PP and is much smaller than that in EPDM. Second, the standard deviation σR or the width of the free-volume radius PDF in the blend decreases with ϕ in the region of ϕ = 10ndash;30%, and it increases when ϕ increases from 30% to 40%. The difference in the σR of the blend and the calculated value σc R according to the simple-mixing rule of PP and EPDM is interpreted by the existence of the two-phase interaction (i.e., the residual thermal pressure and shear stress between PP and EPDM phases in the PP/EPDM blends). The correlation between σR, which indicates the interaction of two phases, and the impact strength of PP/EPDM blends was found and discussed. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
