The polymer systems are discussed in the framework of the Landau-Ginzburg model. The model is derived from the mesoscopic Edwards Hamiltonian via the conditional partition function. We discuss flexible, semiflexible and rigid polymers. The following systems are studied: polymer blends, flexible diblock and multi-block copolymer melts, random copolymer melts, ring polymers, rigid-flexible diblock copolymer melts, mixtures of copolymers and homopolymers and mixtures of liquid crystalline polymers. Three methods are used to study the systems: mean-field model, self consistent one-loop approximation and self consistent field theory. The following problems are studied and discussed: the phase diagrams, scattering intensities and correlation functions, single chain statistics and behavior of single chains close to critical points, fluctuations induced shift of phase boundaries. In particular we shall discuss shrinking of the polymer chains close to the critical point in polymer blends, size of the Ginzburg region in polymer blends and shift of the critical temperature. In the rigid-flexible diblock copolymers we shall discuss the density nematic order parameter correlation function. The correlation functions in this system are found to oscillate with the characteristic period equal to the length of the rigid part of the diblock copolymer. The density and nematic order parameter measured along the given direction are anticorrelated. In the flexible diblock copolymer system we shall discuss various phases including the double diamond and gyroid structures. The single chain statistics in the disordered phase of a flexible diblock copolymer system is shown to deviate from the Gaussian statistics due to fluctuations. In the one loop approximation one shows that the diblock copolymer chain is stretched in the point where two incompatible blocks meet but also that each block shrinks close to the microphase separation transition. The stretching outweights shrinking and the net result is the increase of the radius of gyration above the Gaussian value. Certain properties of homopolymer/copolymer systems are discussed. Diblock copolymers solubilize two incompatible homopolymers by forming a monolayer interface between them. The interface has a positive saddle splay modulus which means that the interfaces in the disordered phase should be characterized by a negative Gaussian curvature. We also show that in such a mixture the Lifshitz tricritical point is encountered. The properties of this unusual point are presented. The Lifshitz, equimaxima and disorder lines are shown to provide a useful tool for studying local ordering in polymer mixtures. In the liquid crystalline mixtures the isotropic nematic phase transition is discussed. We concentrate on static, equilibrium properties of the polymer systems.  相似文献

The early stages of phase evolution, not available for nanometer polymer blend films spin-cast from solutions of incompatible mixtures, have been examined for films prepared from nanoparticles of deuterated polystyrene/ poly(methyl methacrylate) blends (1:1 mass fraction of dPS/PMMA) with PS-PMMA diblock copolymer additives. The initial phase arrangement, confined to the size of nanoparticles, has provided the homogeneity of the initial film composition. The early stages of structure formation, promoted by annealing and traced with atomic and lateral force microscopy (AFM, LFM) as well as secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS), resulted in bilayers, observed commonly for as-prepared solvent-cast blends. The initiated capillary instability of the upper dPS-rich layer depended on copolymer additives, which enhanced the lateral structures pinning the dewetting process.  相似文献

Binary blends of a diblock copolymer (AB) and an incompatible homopolymer (C) confined in spherical cavities are studied using a simulated annealing technique. The phase behavior of the blends is examined for four typical cases, representing the different selectivity of the pore surface to the A, B, and C species. The internal morphology of the spherical polymeric particles is controlled by the homopolymer volume fraction, the degree of confinement, and the composition of the copolymer. Inside a particle, the homopolymers segregate to form one or, under some conditions, two domains; thus, the homopolymers may act as an additional controlling parameter of the shape and symmetry of the copolymer domain. A rich array of confinement-induced novel diblock copolymer morphologies is predicted. In particular, core-shell particles with the copolymers as the shell wrapping around a homopolymer core or a copolymer-homopolymer combined core and Janus-like particles with the copolymers and the homopolymers on different sides are obtained.  相似文献

We describe the surface segregation of polypeptide-based block copolymer micelles to produce stimuli-responsive nanostructures at the polymer blend/air interface. Such structures were obtained by simultaneous surface migration and self assembly at the surface of diblock copolymer/homopolymer blends. We employed blends composed of homopolymer (PS) and an amphiphilic block copolymer polystyrene-b-poly(l-glutamic acid) (PS-b-PGA). The surface was functionalized based on the preferential segregation to the polymer blend/air interface of the hydrophilic PGA block of the diblock copolymer upon annealing to water vapor. The surface migration of the diblock copolymer to the interface was demonstrated both by XPS and contact angle measurements. As a consequence, the PGA interfacial attraction leads to a large surface excess on diblock copolymer which in turn, through macrophase and microphase separation, produced separated domains at the surface with regions composed either of homo or block copolymer. Herein we demonstrate that the use of asymmetric diblock copolymers with a higher content in PS lead to spherical micellar assemblies randomly distributed at the surface. As observed by AFM imaging the blend composition, i.e. the amount of block copolymer within the blend influences the density of micelles at the surface. Finally, when exposed to water, the pH affects the surface morphology. The PGA segments are collapsed at low pH values and extended at pH values above 4.8, thus inducing variations on the topography of the films at the nanometer scale.

This paper reports on the interfacial behaviour of block and graft copolymers used as compatibilizers in immiscible polymer blends. A limited residence time of the copolymer at the interface has been shown in both reactive blending and blend compatibilization by preformed copolymers. Polystyrene (PS)/polyamide6 (PA6), polyphenylene oxide (PPO)/PA6 and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)/PA6 blends have been reactively compatibilized by a styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer SMA. The extent of miscibility of SMA with PS, PPO and PMMA is a key criterion for the stability of the graft copolymer at the interface. For the first 10 to 15 minutes of mixing, the in situ formed copolymer is able to decrease the particle size of the dispersed phase and to prevent it from coalescencing. However, upon increasing mixing time, the copolymer leaves the interface which results in phase coalescence. In PS/LDPE blends compatibilized by preformed PS/hydrogenated polybutadiene (hPB) block copolymers, a tapered diblock stabilizes efficiently a co-continuous two-phase morphology, in contrast to a triblock copolymer that was unable to prevent phase coarsening during annealing at 180°C for 150 minutes.  相似文献

Interfacial agents used in the compatibilization of immiscible polymer blends often consist of block copolymers containing at least one segment compatible with each of the two phases of the blend. This work examines the influence of the molecular weight, architecture, and chemical composition of the interfacial agent on its ability to emulsify a polymer blend. The system chosen is a blend containing 80% polystyrene and 20% ethylene-propylene rubber, compatibilized by diblock copolymers of poly(styrene-hydrogenated butadiene). The emulsification curve, which relates the dispersed phase particle size to the concentration of interfacial agent added to the system, was used as a tool to characterize the efficacy of the different interfacial agents. The observed behavior is similar to that of classical emulsions: a rapid drop in phase size at low concentrations of interfacial modifier, followed by a levelling off to an equilibrium diameter value once a “critical” concentration has been reached. For systems compatibilized by symmetrical diblocks (i.e., containing approximately 50% styrene by weight), the volume average particle diameter decreased from 2.7 μm for the unmodified system to about 0.4 μm once interfacial saturation is reached. The critical concentration for emulsification decreased with increasing interfacial agent molecular weight, due to the higher interfacial area occupied by longer molecules; however, this parameter did not affect the equilibrium particle diameter. The asymmetrical diblock copolymer (30% styrene) was found to be less effective than the symmetrical ones over the entire range of concentrations studied (5 to 35% modifier, based on the volume of the minor phase). Asymmetrical diblock copolymers would tend to form micelles, whereas symmetrical copolymers are less constrained at the interface. No significant difference was observed between the emulsifying capability of tapered and pure diblocks of similar composition and molecular weight. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Electrical conductivity of carbon black (CB) filled polymer blends which are incompatible with each other was studied as a function of the polymer's blend ratio. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) analysis shows that CB distributes unevenly in each component of a polymer blend. TEM photographs of phase structure of solvent extracted HDPE/PMMA blend and solvent extraction experiments of PMMA/PP blend detect the blend ratio at which the structural continuity of filler rich phase is formed. The electrical conductivity of polymer blends is found to be determined by two factors. One is the concentration of CB in the filler rich phase and the other is the structural continuity of this phase. This double percolation affects the conductivity of conductive particle filled polymer blends.  相似文献

A systematic investigation of the dynamic mechanical properties of high-density polyethylene (HDPE)/high-impact polystyrene (HIPS)/copolymer blends was carried out. Blends of 80/20 weight percent of HDPE/HIPS were prepared in the melt state at 180°C in a batch mixer. Synthesized pure diblock (H77) and tapered diblock (H35) copolymers of hydrogenated polybutadiene (HPB) and polystyrene (PS) were added at different concentrations (1, 3, and 5 wt %), and the dynamic mechanical properties were investigated. The results show that: (1) both the tapered and the pure diblock copolymers enhance the phase dispersion and the interphase interactions; (2) structure and molecular weight are both important parameters in the molecular design of copolymers; (3) important effects occur when only small amounts of copolymer are added (up to the interface saturation concentration SC); (4) a micellar structure formation is possible when the copolymer is in excess in the blend; (5) the effect of the copolymer structure on the SC and the critical micellar concentration (CMC) is more pronounced than the effect of molecular weight. These concentrations are found to be lower for the tapered diblock copolymer. The analysis of the dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) results obtained for the 20/80 HDPE/HIPS blend leads to the conclusion that the copolymers also enhance the interactions between heterogeneous phases. Similar conclusions based on electron microscopy were reported in the literature. DMTA shows great potential to relate macroscopic observations to the state of a copolymer in an immiscible blend.  相似文献

Flow‐induced phase separation in binary blends of end‐associating polymers is studied analytically. To describe the conformational and orientational properties of a polymer chain a simple dumbbell model is applied. It is demonstrated that the association rate for formation of associated diblock copolymer‐like chains decreases with an increase of flow rate. This is due to the extra‐stretching of the associated chain compared with the two initial homopolymer chains. The decrease in the fraction of associated diblock copolymer‐like chains makes the homogeneous state less stable, so the effect of flow manifests itself in the enhancement of the segregation tendency in these kind of associated polymer blends.  相似文献

The compatibilization effect of polystyrene (PS)‐poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) diblock copolymer (PS‐b‐PDMS) and the effect of rheological properties of PS and PDMS on phase structure of PS/PDMS blends were investigated using a selective extraction technique and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The dual‐phase continuity of PS/PDMS blends takes place in a wide composition range. The formation and the onset of a cocontinuous phase structure largely depend on blend composition, viscosity ratio of the constituent components, and addition of diblock copolymers. The width of the concentration region of the cocontinuous structure is narrowed with increasing the viscosity ratio of the blends and in the presence of the small amount diblock copolymers. Quiescent annealing shifts the onset values of continuity. The experimental results are compared with the volume fraction of phase inversion calculated with various theoretical models, but none of the models can account quantitatively for the observed data.

A novel PGTA diblock copolymer containing electroactive TEA and mPEG is described. Biodegradable PLLA/PGTA polymer blends are shown to be electroactive. Nanopores of different sizes can be formed on the surface of the polymer blends. An MTT assay shows that the PLLA/PGTA blends exhibited reduced cytotoxicity as compared to TEA due to the introduction of the biocompatible PLLA moiety. Cell culture results show that the cells grow better when they were adhered to the surface of the PLLA/PGTA blends. The 80/20 wt.-% PLLA/PGTA blend shows the best biocompatibility and an electroactivity that accelerates the differentiation of rat C6 glioma cells.  相似文献

The dynamics of phase separation in the presence of a diblock copolymer have been studied using ternary and quaternary models of spinodal decomposition. The ternary model treats the block copolymer as a third component that is compatible with each of the mutually incompatible homopolymers. The quaternary model treats the block copolymer as a pair of specially constrained homopolymers. Both models predict core-shell morphologies with the copolymer concentrated at the interface. Both models predict larger domain sizes and less sharp phase boundaries in the early stages of spinodal decomposition. In the late stages, domain sizes are largest for the system of homopolymers without copolymer and smallest when a system containing copolymer is modeled as a quaternary blend. The scaling exponent observed for the quaternary model was s = 0.25 ± 0.02 compared to s ≅ 0.3 for the homopolymers without copolymer and for the ternary model. The quaternary model predicts internal phase separation within a pure diblock copolymer, whenever the corresponding homopolymers are sufficiently incompatible. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Time-resolved light-scattering measurements have been conducted to investigate the influence of a diblock copolymer additive on the phase boundaries and the kinetics of the phase separation of a polymer blend. The blend studied was a polystyrene-d8/polybutadiene (PSD/PB) mixture with a diblock copolymer composed of the same homopolymers. It was observed that the critical temperature of the blend, which has an upper critical solution temperature (UCST), decreased with increasing copolymer content and the kinetics of the phase separation via a spinodal decomposition mechanism slowed down in the presence of the copolymer. The features of the spinodal peak position and intensity as a function of time with and without copolymer additive were analyzed for near and off-critical compositions in various temperature jumps. The intermediate and late-stage growth rates do not follow a universal scaling function with the addition of diblock copolymers. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In this article, the preparation of nanosized core-shell particles to induce ductility in polystyrene (PS) is described. FTIR spectroscopy, solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and DSC were used to examine the extent of miscibility of PS and poly(butylacrylate)-b-polyolefin diblock copolymers in a blend in which PS was chemically modified by copolymerization with 0.5–5 mol % of p-(hexafluoro-2-hydroxy isopropyl) styrene (HFS). Hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyl-groups and the carbonyl-groups of polybutylacrylate enhanced the miscibility and lead to randomly distributed polyolefin particles surrounded by a homogeneous PBA/PS matrix. Morphological parameters such as the size of the dispersed phase or extent of interpenetration between the components are controllable simply by changing the amount of interacting groups in the blend. The mechanical properties of the prepared blends were also studied. The intrinsic deformation behavior was investigated by compression tests, whereas the microscopic mode of deformation was studied by time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering. It was shown that the macroscopic strain at break depends to a large extent on the diblock copolymer content and the degree of demixing between the rubber shell and PS matrix. Brittle behavior was observed for PS blends that contain more than 3 mol % HFS and show complete miscibility between the PS matrix and acrylate shell. For the blends showing partial miscibility, the compression tests demonstrated a pronounced decrease in strain softening with increasing diblock copolymer concentration. Furthermore, it was illustrated that dependent on the degree of demixing the microscopic deformation mode changes from crazing to cavitation induced shear yielding. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of styrene-ethylene/propylene (SEP) diblock copolymer on the morphology and mechanical propertiesof polypropylene/polystyrene (PP/PS) blends were investigated. The results showed that SEP diblock copolymer, acting as acompatibilizer in PP/PS immiscible blends, can diminish the coalescence of the dispersed particles, reduce their averageparticle size, change their phase morphologies significantly, and increase the mechanical properties. It was found that SEP has better compatibilization effects on the PP/PS (20/80) blends.  相似文献

The effects of adding A–B diblock copolymer to a polymer blend (A/B) on phase‐separation kinetics and morphology have been investigated in a fixed shallow‐quench condition (ΔT = 1.5 °C) by in situ time‐resolved light scattering and phase‐contrast optical microscopy. A shear‐quench technique was used in this study instead of a conventional temperature‐quench method. Mixtures of nearly monodisperse low relative‐molecular masses of polybutadiene (Mw = 2.8 kg/mol), polystyrene (Mw = 2.6 kg/mol), and a near‐symmetric butadiene–styrene diblock copolymer (Mw = 6.3 kg/mol) as an interfacial modifier were studied. We observed that the addition of the diblock copolymer could either retard or accelerate the phase‐separation kinetics depending on the concentration of the diblock copolymer in the homopolymer blends. In contrast to the conventional temperature quench, we observed complex phase‐separation kinetics in the intermediate and late stages of phase separation by the shear‐quench technique. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
