The sessile drop method has been used to study the wettability of hexagonal boron nitride, sapphire, quartz, and polycrystalline silicon carbide by melted sodium chloride in a reducing He–H2 atmosphere. Melted NaCl completely spreads over sapphire and quartz surfaces and form finite contact angles equal to 51° ± 10° and 77° ± 5° on silicon carbide and hexagonal boron nitride, respectively. The calculated works of salt adhesion to the ceramic substrates increase with the magnitude of the ionic component of ceramic material surface energy.  相似文献

The aim of the present investigation was to compare the in vitro bacterial retention on saliva-coated implant materials (pure titanium grade 2 (cp-Ti) and a titanium alloy (Ti–6Al–4V) surfaces), presenting similar surface roughness, and to assess the influence of physico-chemical surface properties of bacterial strain and implant materials on in vitro bacterial adherence. Two bacterial strains (one hydrophilic strain and one hydrophobic strain) were used and the following were evaluated: bacterial cell adherence, SFE values as well as the Lifshitz-van-der Waals, the Lewis acid base components of SFE, the interfacial free energy and the non-dispersive interactions according to two complementary contact angle measurement methods: the sessile drop method and the captive bubble method.

Our results showed similar patterns of adherent bacterial cells on saliva-coated cp-Ti and saliva-coated Ti–6Al–4V. These findings could suggest that bacterial colonization (i.e. plaque formation) is similar on saliva-coated cp-Ti and Ti–6Al–4V surfaces and indicate that both materials could be suitable for use as transgingival abutment or healing implant components. The same physico-chemical properties exhibited by saliva-coated cp-Ti and TA6V, as shown by the sessile drop method and the captive bubble method, could explain this similar bacterial colonisation. Therefore, higher values of total surface free energy of saliva-coated cp-Ti and saliva-coated TA6V samples (γSV ≈65 mJ/m2) were reported using the captive bubble method indicating a less hydrophobic character of these surfaces than with the sessile drop method (γS ≈44.50 mJ/m2) and consequently possible differences in oral bacterial retention according the theory described by Absolom et al.

The number of adherent hydrophobic S. sanguinis cells was two-fold higher than that of hydrophilic S. constellatus cells. Our results confirm that physico-chemical surface properties of oral bacterial strains play a role in bacterial retention to implant materials in the presence of adsorbed salivary proteins.  相似文献

The spreading kinetics of molten polyethylene was studied on a flat type A glass surface. Empirical equations are known in the literature which fit the experimental data only at short times. We present a relationship between the surface free energy and the shape of the melt drop interpreted by the θ contact angle. Relating the experimental θ values obtained at different times with the surface free energy (F), we obtain curves F,t. Using isothermal data at 150°C, we could fit them with a linear relationship between In (F-F)/(F0-F) and In t/t0, where o and ∞ are related to initial and equilibrium conditions.  相似文献

Novel oxy-sulfide glass system xPbS-(73 ? x) Bi2O3–27B2O3 with 6.06 ≤ x ≤ 36.35 named lead sulfide bismuth borate (LSBB) was prepared using normal melt and quench-casting technique. Phase transition temperatures t g, t x, t pi, and t l were noted from the DTA curves. Glass transition temperature t g varied from 306 ± 2 to 336 ± 2 °C and the onset of crystallization temperatures t x was between 331 ± 2 and 402 ± 2 °C. The glasses melted in the range 523 ± 2 to 597 ± 2 °C. The ratio t g /t l showed that compositions reported conform to the two-third law of glass formation. Hruby’s coefficient H r witnessed the thermal stability of the system and that LSBB4 was most stable and glass formability factor k gl showed that composition LSBB1–LSBB6 can easily corroborate vitreous state. The direct band gap energy varied from 1.56 to 3.07 eV, while indirect band gap energy for the fundamental absorption edge was 0.21–1.31 eV. Absorption edges obeyed Urbach rule. A broad range of band tailing was exhibited confirming amorphous state of the system.  相似文献

The wetting of alumina by pure liquid aluminum was investigated over the temperature range 900–1300°C by the sessile drop method under a dynamic vacuum of 10?4–10?5 Pa. When the substrate is carbon coated, the terminal contact angle is reduced to 40° at 1300°C for times longer than 4500 s. In the absence of carbon, the final angle is 82° for the same conditions. Reactive wetting is suggested by the observation of undercutting of the substrate and ridge formation at the leading edge of the liquid aluminum in all carbon‐coated samples. Based on energy considerations, the following is among the thermodynamically favorable reactions: 4Al + 3C → Al4C3. Possible mechanisms for the observed carbon‐enhanced wettability in the system are discussed. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Relationships between formulation, bulk properties, and surface properties are investigated on series of copolymers prepared with hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA), methylmethacrylate (MMA), and ethylmethacrylate (EMA) monomers, and on the homopolymers PMMA and PHEMA. The bulk water content, swelling ratio, and static (sessile drop and captive bubble) and dynamic (Wilhelmy plate technique) contact angles and the electrokinetic potential (streaming potential) are measured. The bulk water content and swelling ratio of HEMA copolymers are proportional to the amount of HEMA and are linearly correlated to the contact angle hysteresis. Periodic instabilities in the wetting cycles, similar to Haines jumps, are observed with HEMA copolymers and support a bidirectional relaxation of the hydrophilic groups respectively towards external water and capillary water. The origin of the electrokinetic potential of these nonionizable polymers is attributed to specific adsorption of [Formula: see text] ions. Its dependence on surface hydrophobicity and statistical length of the side-chains is interpreted in terms of the properties of water molecules near the interface.  相似文献

Contact angle hysteresis of a sessile drop on a substrate consists of continuous invasion of liquid phase with the advancing angle (θ(a)) and contact line pinning of liquid phase retreat until the receding angle (θ(r)) is reached. Receding pinning is generally attributed to localized defects that are more wettable than the rest of the surface. However, the defect model cannot explain advancing pinning of liquid phase invasion driven by a deflating bubble and continuous retreat of liquid phase driven by the inflating bubble. A simple thermodynamic model based on adhesion hysteresis is proposed to explain anomalous contact angle hysteresis of a captive bubble quantitatively. The adhesion model involves two solid–liquid interfacial tensions (γ(sl) > γ(sl)′). Young’s equation with γ(sl) gives the advancing angle θ(a) while that with γ(sl)′ due to surface rearrangement yields the receding angle θ(r). Our analytical analysis indicates that contact line pinning represents frustration in surface free energy, and the equilibrium shape corresponds to a nondifferential minimum instead of a local minimum. On the basis of our thermodynamic model, Surface Evolver simulations are performed to reproduce both advancing and receding behavior associated with a captive bubble on the acrylic glass.  相似文献

Triglyceride wetting properties on solid surfaces of different hydro-phobicities were investigated using three different methods, namely, the sessile drop method for static contact angle measurements, the Wilhelmy method for dynamic contact angle measurements, and the captive bubble method to investigate thin triglyceride film stability. For solid surfaces having a surface free energy higher than the surface tension of triglycerides (tributyrin, tricaprylin, and triolein), a qualitative correlation was observed between wetting and solid/triglyceride relative hydrophobicities. On surfaces presenting extreme hydrophobic or hydrophilic properties, medium-chain triglycerides had a behavior similar to that of long-chain unsaturated ones. On a high-energy surface (glass), tricaprylin showed an autophobic effect subsequent to molecular adsorption in trident conformation on the solid, observed with the three methods. Thin triglyceride films between an air bubble and a solid surface were stable for a short time, for solids with a surface free energy larger than the triglyceride surface tension. If the solid surface had a lower surface free energy, the thin film collapsed after a time interval which increased with triglyceride viscosity. Copyright 2000 Academic Press.  相似文献

Superhydrophobic polycaprolactone (PCL) membranes with hierarchical structure were fabricated via alternate electrospinning/electrospraying techniques. Electrospun PCL/methyl silicone oil (PCL/MSO) nanofibers were employed as substrate. PCL/MSO‐PCL microspheres (PCL/MSO‐PCLMS) hierarchical membrane was prepared via electrosprayed PCLMS as an additional layer on the substrate. Field emission scanning electron microscopy images showed the formation of hierarchical PCL/MSO‐PCLMS membranes. Compared to pure PCL fibers substrate (120 ± 1.3°), the water contact angle (WCA) of MSO‐modified PCL membrane was 142 ± 0.7°. The most interesting observation was that the WCA of PCLMS without any modification could be achieved to 146 ± 2.8°. On this basis, PCL/MSO‐PCLMS hierarchical membrane possessed superhydrophobic surface with 150 ± 0.6° of WCA. The excellent surface roughness and air‐pocket capacity of hierarchical membranes would make the membranes more hydrophobic. The maximum oil (n‐hexane) adsorption capacity of PCL/MSO‐PCLMS membrane was 32.53 g g?1. Oil–water separation efficiencies of the superhydrophobic membranes were all higher than 99.93% after 10 cycles. The hierarchically structured PCL superhydrophobic membranes indicate the potential applications of environmentally friendly biopolymers as separation membranes. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. The wetting behavior of vapor phase photografted hydrophilic acrylic monomers was evaluated by the three most commonly employed techniques, i.e., the captive bubble, the sessile drop, and the Wilhelmy plate technique. The measured contact angles and the overall wetting behavior were discussed in light of the non-ideal nature of these surfaces. It was found that the peculiar nature of hydrophilic grafted surfaces is carefully reflected in the experimentally measurable contact angles. While in the case of the captive bubble the hydrophilic and rough nature of these coatings prevent the bubble-surface contact, in the case of the sessile drop the measured contact angles follow the behavior predicted by contact angle hysteresis theories. Wilhelmy plate measurements, performed as sequential scanning loops, show velocity-dependent effects which are linked to the composition, morphology and mobility of the grafted surfaces.  相似文献

Paper samples were rendered superhydrophobic with Alkyl Ketene Dimer using (1) Airblasting with cryo ground micro particles, (2) crystallizing from organic solvents and (3) spraying with Rapid Expansion of Supercritical Solutions (RESS) technique. The papers were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy, contact angle to water measurements and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). Advancing contact angles were in the region of 150°–160° and receding contact angles were in the region of 110°–130°. Diagrams showing the drop base diameter vs. the contact angle when water is pumped into, and then withdrawn from, a sessile drop show that a stick slip pattern is present in the advancing phase for a non coated internally sized paper. Papers rendered superhydrophobic with the RESS technique showed a much less pronounced stick slip pattern in the advancing phase but still a stick slip pattern in the receding phase.  相似文献

Zwitterionic and cationic polyelectrolyte brushes were prepared by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization of 2-methacryloyloxy- ethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and 2-(N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), respectively. The poly(DMAEMA) brush was treated with methyl iodide to form poly[2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyltrimethylammonium iodide] [poly(METAI)]. The effects of ionic strength on brush structure and surface properties of densely grafted polyelectrolyte brushes were analyzed by contact angle measurements, neutron reflectivity (NR) and macroscopic friction tests. Both polyelectrolyte brushes exhibited hydrophilic properties. The contact angle of the poly(MPC) brush surface against water was ca. 0° in air and the contact angle of the air bubble in water was ca. 170°. The air bubble in water hardly attached to the poly(MPC) brush surface, indicating super hydrophilic characteristics. NR measurements of poly(MPC) and poly(METAI) brushes showed that the grafted polymer chains were extended from the substrate surface in a good solvent such as water. Interestingly, NR study did not reveal the shrinkage of the brush chain in salt solution. The polyelectrolyte brushes immersed in both water and NaCl solution at various concentrations showed a low friction coefficient and low adhesion force.  相似文献

Perfluorocarbon monomers such as C2F4, C2F6, C4F10, and mixtures thereof with H2, were subjected to plasma polymerization and deposited onto low-density polyethylene (LDPE) substrates. The effect of plasma conditions, surface characteristics, and surface dynamics of plasma polymers on their ability to improve the resistance to water vapor permeation was investigated. An optimum discharge energy density was found for a monomer which provided the greatest reduction water vapor permeability. Although all of the plasma polymers show higher hydrophobicity than polyethylene, the reduction in water vapor permeability is not uniquely related to water contact angle. The surface-dynamic stability of a plasma polymer surface was found to be the key factor in determining the barrier performance of the plasma polymer. The extent of change of surface-configuration after water immersion strongly correlated with the improvement in the water vapor permeation resistance. Plasma polymers with the higher surface-dynamic stability provided the better water barrier coating applied on LDPE films. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Angle‐resolved XPS data (elemental quantification and high‐energy‐resolution C 1s) are presented for ten polymers with side‐chains of the form ? OCO(CF2)yF, ? COO(CH2)2OCO(CF2)yF (y = 1, 2, 3) and ? COO(CH2)x(CF2)yF (x = 1, y = 1, 2, 3; x = 2, y = 8). Particular attention was paid to charge compensation and speed of data acquisition, with co‐addition from multiple fresh samples to give spectra with good energy resolution and good signal‐to‐noise ratio free from the effects of x‐ray‐induced degradation. Water contact angles for the polymers are also reported. The XPS data demonstrate preferential surface segregation of fluorine‐containing groups for all but the shortest side‐chain polymer, where the ? OCOCF3 side‐chain either does not surface segregate or is too short for surface segregation to be detectable by angle‐resolved XPS. In the other polymers studied the relative positions of functional groups in the side‐chains correlate with the angle‐resolved behaviour of the corresponding C 1s components. This shows that the surface side‐chains are oriented towards the polymer surface. For the ? COO(CH2)2OCO(CF2)yF (y = 1) side‐chain, the angle‐resolved C 1s data suggest reduced ordering and linearity compared with y = 2 and 3. For any particular series of polymers, e.g. ? COO(CH2)x(CF2)yF, the water contact angles increase with y, consistent with burying of the hydrophilic ester groups as y increases. For any particular value of y the sequence of water contact angles is ? COO(CH2)x(CF2)yF > ? OCO(CF2)yF ~ ? COO(CH2)2OCO(CF2)yF, suggesting greater ordering and density of fluorocarbon species at the surface of the ? COO(CH2)x(CF2)yF side‐chain polymers compared with the other polymers studied. For the ? COO(CH2)2(CF2)8F polymer a water contact angle of 124° is measured, which is greater than that of poly(tetrafluoroethene). The ? COO(CH2)2OCO(CF2)F polymer is unusual in that it shows a particularly low water contact angle (83° ), suggesting that the probe fluid is able to sense both ester groups, consistent with the reduced ordering of the side‐chain detected by angle‐resolved XPS. Semicrystalline poly(bis‐trifluoroethoxymethyl)oxetane, P(B‐3FOx), was prepared by cationic ring‐opening polymerization at ?5 °C with Mn up to 21 kDa. Differences in cooling rates from the melt have substantial effects on crystal phase, percent crystallinity, surface topography, and wetting behavior. DSC and WAXD show that cooling from the melt at slow rates (<5 °C/min) gives α‐P(B‐3FOx) with ΔHf = 22–27 J/g. Quenching from the melt results in β‐P(B‐3FOx) for which a mesophase structure is suggested. β‐P(B‐3FOx) melts at 53 °C followed by recrystallization to α‐P(B‐3FOx). Solution casting from THF results in third phase, γ‐P(B‐3FOx). TM‐AFM and SEM imaging for α‐P(B‐3FOx) showed that cold crystallization at 25 °C brought about increased crystallinity and surface topologies characterized by sharp asperities and lath‐shaped crystals. Spontaneous surface roughening of α‐P(B‐3FOx) results in a discontinuous three‐phase contact line with water and an increase in water sessile drop contact angle from 106° to 136°. The ~30° increase in water contact angle was attributed primarily to a topological change from a relatively smooth surface (Wenzel state) to an asperity‐rich surface yielding a discontinuous three‐phase contact line (composite of Wenzel and Cassie‐Baxter state). The oleophobicity for this polymer, which contains only a single ? CF3 end group on each side chain, compares favorably with more highly fluorinated acrylates. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hemocompatibility is an essential aspect of blood contacting polymers. Knowledge of the relationship between polymer structure and hemocompatibility is important in designing such polymers. In this work, the effect of swelling behavior and states of water on the hemocompatibility of poly(acrylonitrile-co-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PANCNVP) films was studied. Platelet adhesion and plasma recalcification time tests were used to evaluate the hemocompatibility of the films. Considering the importance of surface properties on the hemocompatibility of polymers, static water contact angles were measured by both sessile drop and captive bubble methods. It was found that, on the film surface of PANCNVP with a higher NVP content, adhered platelets were remarkably suppressed and the recalcification time was longer. The total water content adsorbed on the PANCNVP film was determined through swelling experiments performed at temperatures of interest. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis were used to probe the states of water in the films. Based on the results from these experiments, it was hypothesized that the better hemocompatibility of PANCNVP films with higher NVP contents was due to their higher free water content, because water molecule exchange at the polymer/liquid interface, facilitated by a high free water content, is unfavorable for the formation of surface bound water, which causes poor hemocompatibility. Polished copper (Cu) surfaces modified with 1H,1H,2H,2H‐perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane (PFTS) have been shown to be very hydrophobic and stable. Mechanically polished, oxidized, and PFTS‐reacted Cu surfaces were characterized by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, which confirmed the presence of perfluorinated alkyl chains. For a PFTS‐modified Cu surface (PFTS/Cu), the sessile drop static contact angle of pure water at ambient temperature and high relative humidity (RH) was measured to be more than 125° and the Zisman critical surface energy to be typically less than 16 mN/m. Ellipsometry showed the thickness of the PFTS/Cu film to be typically less than 25 nm. Stability tests indicated that the PFTS/Cu film could survive in pure boiling water for one hour, boiling nitric acid (pH 1.5 or 1.8) for 30 min, sodium hydroxide solution (pH 12, 70 °C) for 30 min, and autoclave conditions (steam at 134 °C and 3 atm) for 15 min. The more commonly used self‐assembled monolayer (SAM) modifications of Cu surfaces, e.g. thiol compounds, are significantly less stable than PFTS/Cu. The extremely hydrophobic and stable PFTS/Cu could be a very good candidate for corrosion inhibition and/or heat exchangers exploiting condensation. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Spiropyran derivatives containing variable–length linking chains and either tri- or mono-alkoxysilane end groups were synthesized. Thin films on glass slides were formed with mixture of the spiropyran compounds and either octadecyltrimethoxysilane or octadecyldimethylmethoxysilane. The photochemistry of the spiropyran in the films was investigated by UV-Vis spectroscopy. Irradiation forms the merocyanine, which is detected by absorption spectroscopy. The rate of the thermal reversion of the merocyanine to the spiropyran was studied and found to show no dependence on chain length and resemble that found in solid polymers, not solution. Sessile drop contact angle measurements show a decrease from 70±3 to 63±2° for films prepared from 4, and a drop from 50 to 46±2 degrees for films prepared from 6 upon irradiation with UV light. Evaluation of this system as a surface to control the realignment of the nematic liquid crystal in a nematic liquid crystal proved unsuccessful, though the surface energy of the system can be changed solely by irradiation with light.  相似文献

A novel electrochemical route for the preparation of hydrophobic fluorinated amorphous carbon (a-C:F) films with nanostructured surfaces on single crystal silicon substrate was reported. The films were investigated in terms of the surface morphology, chemical composition, microstructure and hydrophobic behavior. The results showed that a highly uniform and densely packed bamboo shoot-like nanostructure was obtained without any use of template. The incorporation of fluorine presented mainly in the forms of CF2 chains and CCFx (x = 1, 2) in the films. Sessile drop water contact angle measurements showed that the contact angle of a-C:F films deposited by electrochemical route was about 145°, which can be attributed to the lower surface energy of CFx groups and higher diffusion resistance of the special nanostructured surface to water. Moreover, the related growth mechanism of the resulting films in liquid-phase electrodeposition is discussed as well.  相似文献
