A method including cryogenic grinding, melt pressing from the molten state, and quenching was used to prepare blends of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(ethylene naphthalene 2,6‐dicarboxylate) (PEN) in which the two phases were highly dispersed. The effect of melt‐pressing times on the thermal properties and relaxation behavior of PET/PEN films were characterized with differential scanning calorimetry and dielectric spectroscopy. For short melt‐pressing times, two glass‐transition, two crystallization, and two melting peaks were observed, indicating the presence of PET‐rich and PEN‐rich phases in these blends. Longer melt‐pressing times revealed a single glass transition and a single α‐relaxation process, showing that PET–PEN block copolymers were likely to be formed during the melt pressing. The experimental findings were examined in terms of the transesterification reactions between the blend components, as revealed by 1H NMR measurements. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new series of segmented copolymers were synthesized from poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) oligomers and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) by a two‐step solution polymerization reaction. PET oligomers were obtained by glycolysis depolymerization. Structural features were defined by infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The copolymer composition was calculated via 1H NMR spectroscopy. The content of soft PEG segments was higher than that of hard PET segments. A single glass‐transition temperature was detected for all the synthesized segmented copolymers. This observation was found to be independent of the initial PET‐to‐PEG molar ratio. The molar masses of the copolymers were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 4448–4457, 2004  相似文献

Poly(ethylene terephthalate)‐co‐poly(propylene glycol) (PET‐co‐PPG) copolymers with PPG ratio ranging from 0 to 0.90 mol% were synthesized by the melt copolycondensation. The intrinsic viscosity, structure, non‐isothermal crystallization behavior, nucleation and spherulitic growth of the copolymers were investigated by Ubbelohde viscometer, Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H‐NMR), differential scanning calorimetry, and polarized optical microscopy, respectively. The non‐isothermal crystallization process of the copolymers was analyzed by Avrami, Ozawa, Mo's, Kissinger, and Dobreva methods, respectively. The results showed that the crystallizability of PET was apparently enhanced with incorporating a small amount of PPG, which first rose and then reduced with increasing amount of PPG in the copolymers at a given cooling rate. The crystallization mechanism was a three‐dimensional growth with both instantaneous and sporadic nucleation. Particularly, PET‐co‐PPG containing 0.60 mol% PPG exhibited the highest crystallizability among all the copolymers. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Poly(ethylene terephthalate)/copoly(succinic anhydride/ethylene oxide) copolymers, (PET/PES copolymers) were synthesized by the transreaction between PET and PES and characterized with GPC, 1H NMR, and DSC. Most of the copolymers obtained were random copolymers. The films cast of these copolymers were transparent. The thermal, mechanical properties, and biodegradability of the copolymers obtained were studied with respect to the composition and lengths of aliphatic and aromatic units in the copolymers. In the copolymers having high PET content, the melting points, due to the PET segment, were observed by DSC measurement, although the fusion heats of the copolymers were small. The enzymatic hydrolyzability by a lipase from Rhizopus arrhizus and biodegradability by activated sludge of the copolymers decreased with an increase in PET content. When the length of succinic acid unit in the copolymer was below 2, the hydrolyzability of the copolymers decreased considerably. The tensile strengths of the cast films prepared from the copolymers synthesized by the transreaction increased with an increase in PET content, whereas, the elongations at break decreased. Their tensile strengths were half, and the elongations were double compared to those of PET homopolymer film. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 4478–4489, 2000  相似文献

The crystallization behavior of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) with disodium terephthalate (DST) as nucleating agent was investigated. A detailed analysis of the crystallization course from the melt was made with the Avrami expression. The results demonstrated that DST additive can promote the PET crystallization rate in its entire crystallizable temperature range, and the acceleration degree of DST decreases with increasing temperature after a temperature higher than 180 °C. The values of the Avrami exponent indicated that the crystallization mode in Avrami theory is not suitable for the crystallization of these polymers, and the mechanism of the heterogeneous nucleation on PET crystallization is discussed. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article deals with a new way of improving the melt viscosity of linear poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) chains through the reaction of the PET end groups (alcohol and acid) with new chain extenders, 3‐(triethoxysilyl)propylsuccinic anhydride (ASSI) and 3‐glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane, during the melt processing of PET. The reactions, investigated with model compounds monomethylterephthalate and triethylene glycol monomethylether for PET? COOH and ? OH end groups, respectively, by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy (1H, 13C, and 29Si), provided evidence of well‐known acid–epoxide and alcohol–anhydride reactions, respectively. In addition, numerous other species appeared because of the presence of alkoxysilane groups, such as alcohol–alkoxysilane exchange reactions, acyloxysilane formation, and hydrolysis–condensation reactions of alkoxysilane. All these reactions led to the formation of branched chains when transposed to PET melt modification. A size exclusion chromatography analysis and the rheological behavior confirmed the presence of branched structures embedded in shorter linear PET chains. The rheological behavior of this blend was drastically modified in comparison with that of neat PET; consequently, there was an important increase in the zero‐shear viscosity, with a maximum concentration of branched structures of about 17 vol % obtained with an ASSI/PET molar ratio of 4. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The morphology and crystallization behavior of poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) blends compatibilized with graft copolymers were investigated. PPS‐blend‐PET compositions were prepared in which the viscosity of the PPS phase was varied to assess the morphological implications. The dispersed‐phase particle size was influenced by the combined effects of the ratio of dispersed‐phase viscosity to continuous‐phase viscosity and reduced interfacial tension due to the addition of PPS‐graft‐PET copolymers to the blends. In the absence of graft copolymer, the finest dispersion of PET in a continuous phase of PPS was achieved when the viscosity ratio between blend components was nearly equal. As expected, PET particle sizes increased as the viscosity ratio diverged from unity. When graft copolymers were added to the blends, fine dispersions of PET were achieved despite large differences in the viscosities of PPS and PET homopolymers. The interfacial activity of the PPS‐graft‐PET copolymer appeared to be related to the molecular weight ratio of the PPS homopolymer to the PPS segment of the graft copolymer (MH/MA). With increasing solubilization of the PPS graft copolymer segment by the PPS homopolymer, the particle size of the PET dispersed phase decreased. In crystallization studies, the presence of the PPS phase increased the crystallization temperature of PET. The magnitude of the increase in the PET crystallization temperature coincided with the viscosity ratio and extent of the PPS homopolymer solubilization in the graft copolymer. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Random copolymers of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN) were synthesized by melt condensation. In a series of thin, solvent cast films of varying PEN content, acetone diffusivity and solubility were determined at 35°C and an acetone pressure of 5.4 cm Hg. The kinetics of acetone sorption in the copolymer films are well described by a Fickian model. Both solubility and diffusivity decrease with increasing PEN content. The acetone diffusion coefficient decreases 93% from PET to PET/85PEN, a copolymer in which 85 weight percent of the dimethyl terephthalate in PET has been replace by dimethyl naphthalate 2,6-dicarboxylate. The acetone solubility coefficient in the amorphous regions of the polymer decreases by approximately a factor of two over the same composition range. The glass/rubber transition temperatures of these materials rise monotonically with increasing PEN content. Copolymers containing 20 to 80 wt % PEN are amorphous. Samples with <20% or >80% PEN contain measurable levels of crystallinity. Estimated fractional free volume in the amorphous regions of these samples is lower in the copolymers than in either of the homopolymers. Relative free volume as probed by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) decreases systematically with increasing PEN content. Acetone diffusion coefficients correlate well with PALS results. Infrared spectroscopy suggests an increase in the fraction of ethylene glycol units in the trans conformation in the amorphous phase as the concentration of PEN in the copolymer increases. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. After isothermal crystallization, poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) showed double endothermic behavior in the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) heating scan. During the heating scans of semicrystalline PET, a metastable melt which comes from melting thinner lamellar crystal populations formed between the low and the upper endothermic temperatures. The metastable melt can recrystallize immediately just above the low melting temperature and form thicker lamellae than the original ones. The thickness and perfection depends on the crystallization time and crystallization temperature. The crystallization kinetics of this metastable melt can be determined by means of DSC. The kinetics analysis showed that the isothermal crystallization of the metastable PET melt proceeds with an Avrami exponent of n = 1.0 ∼ 1.2, probably reflecting one‐dimensional or irregular line growth of the crystal occurring between the existing main lamellae with heterogeneous nucleation. This is in agreement with the hypothesis that the melting peaks are associated with two distinct crystal populations with different thicknesses. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(trimethylene terephthalate)/polyethylene glycol (PTT/PEG) copolymers, with PEG content ranging from 27.2 to 47.4 wt%, were synthesized by melt copolycondensation. Wide-Angle X-ray diffractometer revealed that all copolymers had the same crystal structure of homo-PTT at room temperature. All copolymers could form ring-banded spherulites, and band spacing increased with increasing PEG content at a given crystallization temperature. Nonisothermal crystallization morphology of copolymers was greatly influenced by cooling rate. When the cooling rate was 2.5 °C/min or lower, banded patterns were absent, whereas when the cooling rate was 20 °C/min or higher, a novel crystal morphology composed of non-banded spherulites (central part) and ring-banded spherulites with decreasing band spacing along the radial growth direction was observed. Moreover, the size of the non-banded spherulitic part decreased with increasing cooling rate. Finally, the nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of copolymers were analyzed and only the Mo method was satisfactory to accurately describe this system.  相似文献

The crystallization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was studied in the presence of nucleating agents and promoters. The effect of both by themselves and in concert was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry. The aim of this work is to find conditions of fast crystallization of PET. Sodium benzoate(SB) and Surlyn® (S) substantially increase the crystallization rate of PET at higher temperature owing to a reduction in the energy barrier towards primary nucleation, but they accelerate crystallization even more at lower temperature with an additional improvement of the molecular mobility of PET chains. Chain scission of PET caused by the reaction with the nucleating agents was proven by determination of molecular weight. The addition of S alone led to a lower reduction in molecular weight. A series of N-alkyl-p-toluenesulfonamides (ATSAs) were shown to effectively promote molecular motion of the PET chains, leading to an increase in crsytallization rate at lower temperature. A remarkable acceleration of crystallization of PET was attained at lower temperature when S and ATSA were added together. When the content of ATSA is low, S has the dominant influence due to its dual effect of decreasing energy barrier towards nucleation and promoting molecular motion of PET chains. A further increase of crystallization rate of PET was found only after an addition of ATSA of above 5 wt.%.Dedicated to Professor Bernhard Wunderlich on the occasion of his 65th birthdayThis work was supported by State Science and Technology Commission, and partially by National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Alkaline and enzymatic hydrolyzes of poly(ethylene terephthalate) fabrics (PET) were mechanistically compared based on released degradation products (HPLC‐UV‐RI) and changes in surface properties [hydrophilicity, cationic dyeing, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)]. Enzymatic hydrolysis led to an increase in the amount of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups on the surface resulting in an enhanced water absorption and dyeability. Enzymes partially adsorbed to PET fabrics during hydrolysis were completely removed by subsequent extraction according to XPS analysis. In contrast to the enzyme treatment, alkaline hydrolysis did not lead to an increase of hydroxyl and acid groups according to XPS while both treatments caused a substantial increase in hydrophilicity and were more effective on amorphous fibers. Alkaline hydrolysis led to a greater increase in the K/S value after cationic dyeing due to enlarged surface area. Consequently, ESEM‐images demonstrated that alkaline treatment drastically affected the surface morphology of the polymer resulting in crater‐like structures of the fibers, whereas after enzymatic treatment the morphology of the fibers remained unchanged. To reach similar benefits in hydrophilicity, drastically higher amounts of degradation products were released during alkaline hydrolysis as also indicated by >6% weight loss compared to <1% after enzyme treatment. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The melt crystallization behaviors and crystalline structures of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), poly(trimethylene terephthalate), and poly(ethylene‐co‐trimethylene terephthalate) (PETT) were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), and X‐ray diffraction at various crystallization temperatures (Tcs). The PETT copolymers were synthesized via the polycondensation of terephthalate with ethylene glycol and trimethylene glycol (TG) in various compositions. The copolymers with 69.0 mol % or more TG or 31.0 mol % or less TG were crystallizable, but the other copolymers containing 34–56 mol % TG were amorphous. The DSC isothermal results revealed that the addition of a small amount of flexible TG (up to 21 mol %) to the PET structure slightly reduced the formation of three‐dimensional spherulites. A greater TG concentration (91–100%) in the copolyesters changed the crystal growth from two‐dimensional to three‐dimensional. The DSC heating scans after the completion of isothermal crystallization at various Tcs showed three melting endotherms for PET, PETT‐88, PETT‐84, and PETT‐79 and four melting endotherms for PETT‐9 and PETT. The presence of an additional melting endotherm could be attributed to the melting of thinner and imperfect copolyester crystallites. Analyses of the Lauritzen–Hoffman equation demonstrated that PETT‐88 had the highest values of the product of the lateral and folding surface free energies, and this suggested that the addition of small amounts of flexible trimethylene terephthalate segments to PET disturbed chain regularity, thus increasing molecular chain mobility. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The microstructure and crystallization behavior of a set of poly(ethylene terephthalate‐co‐5‐nitroisophthalate) copolymers (PETNI) containing 5‐nitroisophthalic units in the 10–50 mol % range were examined and compared to those of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(ethylene terephthalate‐co‐isophthalate) (PETI) copolymers. A 13C NMR analysis of PETNI copolymers in a trifluoroacetic acid solution indicates that they are random copolymers with average sequence lengths in accordance with ideal polycondensation statistics. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies show that PETNI containing 5‐nitroisophthalic units up to 20 mol % are able to crystallize and that crystallization takes place in these copolymers at much slower rates than in PET. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction from powder and fibers reveals that crystallizable PETNI adopts the same triclinic crystal structure as PET, with the nitroisophthalate units being excluded from crystallites. Fourier transform infrared in combination with cross‐polarization/magic‐angle spinning 13C NMR spectroscopy demonstrates the occurrence of a gauche–trans conversion encompassing the crystallization process. A correlation between DSC and spectroscopic data leads us to conclude that the content of trans conformer in the noncrystallized phase of PETNI is higher than in both PET and PETI copolymers and suggests that secondary crystallization in the homopolymer must proceed by a mechanism different than that in copolymers. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Graft copolymers consisting of amorphous main chain, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), or poly(methyl acrylate) (PMAc), and crystalline side chains, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), have been prepared by copolymerization of PEG macromonomers with methyl methacrylate or methyl acrylate (MMAx or MACx, respectively). Because of the compatibility of PMMA/PEG and PMAc/PEG, from small‐angle X‐ray scattering results, the main and side chains in graft copolymers were suggested to be homogeneous in the molten state. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) cooling scans revealed that PEG side chains for graft copolymers with large PEG fractions were crystallized when the sample was cooled, with a cooling rate of 10 °C/min. The spherulite pattern observed by a polarized optical microscope suggested the growth of PEG crystalline lamellae. Crystallization of PEG in MMAx was more restrained than in MACx. From these results, we have concluded that the crystallization behavior of the grafted side chains is strongly influenced by the glass transition of a homogeneously molten sample as well as dilution of the crystallizable chains. Domain spacings for isothermally crystallized graft copolymers were described by interdigitating chain packing in crystalline–amorphous lamellar structure. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films were treated by argon plasma following by graft copolymerization with acrylic acid (AAc). The obtained PET-surface grafted PAA (PET-g-PAA) was coupled with chitosan (CS) and o-carboxymethylchitosan (OCMCS) molecules, respectively. Their surface physicochemical properties were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), water contact angle and streaming potential measurements. The PET-g-PAA surface containing carboxylic acid, CS immobilized PET surface containing amino and OCMCS immobilized PET surface containing both carboxylic acid and amino groups, make the PET surface exhibited a hydrophilic character. The blood compatibility was evaluated by platelet contacting experiments and protein adsorption experiments in vitro. The results demonstrate that the PET surface coupling OCMCS shows much less platelet adhesive and fibrinogen adsorption compared to the other surface modified PET films. The anticoagulation of PET-OCMCS is ascribed to the suitable balance of hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity, surface zeta potential and the low adsorption of protein.  相似文献

Quasi-liquid composites based on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films with 9 wt% solution of the C60 (70%) and C70 (∼30%) fullerenes mixture in dichlorobenzene (DCB) have been obtained. It has been shown that PET swelling in the fullerene solution in DCB is accompanied by penetration of fullerene into the polymer structure, and PET films are deformed by the mechanism of intercrystallite crazing. As has been revealed by UV spectroscopy, fullerene incorporated into composite remains monomeric as in solution.  相似文献

The poly(ethylene glycol)/poly(2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PEG/PDMAEMA) double hydrophilic block copolymers were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization using mPEG‐Br or Br‐PEG‐Br as macroinitiators. The narrow molecular weight distribution of PEG/PDMAEMA block copolymers was identified by gel permeation chromatography results. The thermosensitivity of PEG/PDMAEMA block copolymers in aqueous solution was revealed to depend significantly on pH, ionic strength, chain structure, and concentration of the block copolymers. By optimizing these factors, the cloud point temperature of PEG/PDMAEMA block copolymers can be limited within body temperature range (30–37 °C), which suggests that PEG/PDMAEMA block copolymers could be a good candidate for drug delivery systems. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
