The even and the odd supermodes of nonlinear directional couplers are determined by means of a variational approach; both slab and channel nonlinear couplers are considered. The validity of the solutions given by the analytical method and their stability properties are analysed through numerical integration of the governing equations. It is shown that channel nonlinear directional couplers improve the stability of the eigenmodes.  相似文献

The solutions of electromagnetic field equations for non-radiative coupled dielectric guides are derived using mode matching technique. Dispersion curves are plotted for various dielectric materials and dimensional parameters. The non-radiative phenomenon in the coupled dielectric guide has been discussed in detail. The hybrid directional couplers in the above configuration have been theoretically designed by computing the normalized propagation constants. This paper presents a new design for an insensitive-polarization all-optical switch using 2 × 2 multimode interference (MMI) couplers. The switching structure can operate at central operating wavelength 1550 nm for both polarizations. A nonlinear directional coupler is used to realize the phase shifter and therefore switching mechanism is obtained. The transfer matrix method and beam propagation method are used to design and optimize the whole device structure.  相似文献

Integrated optic directional couplers consisting of curved waveguides are simulated analytically by solving the Riccati equation. The coupling coefficient between the curved waveguides with a parabolically varying gap and the condition of total power transfer between the waveguides are derived. In order to compute the overall coupling coefficient and hence the power distribution along the waveguides for Ti:LiNbO 3 curved waveguide directional couplers, the coupling coefficient for straight waveguide couplers is computed for different gaps using the effective-index-based matrix method (EIMM). Finally, the power distribution in the curved waveguides along the length is computed. The method is mostly analytical except the effective-index method and is computationally simple.  相似文献

The nonlinear switching characteristics of fused fiber directional couplers were studied experimentally. By using femtosecond laser pulses with pulse width of 100 fs and wavelength of about 1550 nm from a system of Ti:sapphire laser and optical parametric amplifier (OPA), the nonlinear switching properties of a null coupler and a 100% coupler were measured. The experimental results were coincident with the simulations based on nonlinear propagation equations in fiber by using super-mode theory. Nonlinear loss in fiber was also measured to get the injected power at the coupler. After deducting the nonlinear loss and input efficiency, the nonlinear switching critical peak powers for a 100% and a null fused couplers were calculated to be 9410 and 9440 W, respectively. The nonlinear loss parameter PN in an expression of αNL = αP/PN was obtained to be PN = 0.23 W.  相似文献

A numerical study of femtosecond pulse propagation and switching in a dual-core nonlinear directional coupler with the consideration of third order dispersion and self-steepening effects is reported. The Split Step Fourier Method (SSFM) is used to investigate the switching characteristics of nonlinear directional couplers. It is observed that the energy transfer from core to core is not affected by changing the input pulse shapes except super-Gaussian. While the normalized coupling co-efficient and the input peak power dominate the coupling characteristics, the effects of third order dispersion (TOD) and self-steepening (SS) are also reported.  相似文献

This paper study the dynamics of optical solitons for nonlinear directional couplers. This coupler system is considered with the group velocity dispersion and the cross-phase modulation of two components along with the spatiotemporal dispersion coefficients. The constraint conditions for the existence of optical Gaussons and dark solitons are listed under the log law and Kerr law nonlinearities, repectively. Additionally, a couple of other solutions known as singular periodic and combined dark-singular solitons, fall out as a by-product of this scheme. This scheme however fails to retrieve bright soliton solution.  相似文献

Abstract

In this work, we present a numerical investigation of the transmission and switching of fundamental solitons in asymmetric nonlinear directional couplers, constructed with dispersion decreasing fibers (DDF). In this configuration, the coupler consists of two separated parallel fibers, one with a DDF profile and the other with a constant profile. We obtained the characteristics of transmission, extinction ratio, and compression factor of the device.

The truth tables for the logic gates AND, OR, and XOR were obtained. We concluded that the device presenting a constant profile provided the best performance of the studied logic gates. Logic gates AND, OR, and XOR operating with extinction coefficient around 16.6 dB were obtained.  相似文献

The propagation of laser radiation in a nonlinear directional coupler with identical optical waveguides is studied theoretically. Account is taken of refractive index saturation. Bifurcations of the intensity distribution and transmission characteristic are revealed, and respective regions in the parameter plane are delineated. Two points of input intensity self-switching are found. A coupling length vs. normalized input intensity is investigated for different values of the nonlinearity parameter. Distinctive features of the coupler with saturated nonlinearity compared with Kerr-type couplers are highlighted.  相似文献

报道了对高斯型及指数型变耦合系数三波导耦合器的一些重要的全光开关特性进行的研究。利用四阶龙格一库塔方法对指数型和高斯型两类变耦合系数三波导耦合器进行了数值计算。数值计算结果表明:对于变耦合系数三波导耦合器而言,功率可在波导1与波导3之间100%转换,而波导2则不可能达到100%的功率输出。与双波导变耦合系数耦合器相比,在相同的最大耦合系数情况下三波导变耦合系数耦合器开关曲线要更陡一些.即具有更好的开关特性。与平行三波导耦合器相比,变耦合系数三波导耦合器作为光开关的最大优点在于开关曲线中不存在振荡。  相似文献

Crosstalks of two-waveguide and three-waveguide directional couplers are analyzed mathematically based on the relationship between the coupled mode and the normal mode. Numerical techniques such as the finite-difference method and the beam propagation method are employed to confirm the validity of the derived expressions. The calculation results show that two-waveguide directional coupler is superior to any type of three-waveguide couplers from the practical viewpoint of the crosstalk and the coupling length.  相似文献

利用光束传输法,分析设计了一种只由两个定向耦合器构成、能直接与单模光纤相耦合、易于集成的平面光波导(Planar Lightwave Circuit,PLC)型1.31/1.49/1.55 μm单纤三向器.该器件的输入输出弯曲波导和耦合区平行波导均采用光束传输法进行优化设计,并对器件的折射率进行了容差分析,获得了当两个定向耦合器的耦合长度分别为6 578 μm、3953 μm时,器件对各波长的隔离度均在47 dB以上,且插入损耗小于0.05 dB.  相似文献

The coupling ratio of directional couplers in Z-cut Y-propagation and X-cut Z-propagation LiNbO3 crystals was adjusted by laser ablation. The coupling ratio change is more efficient for the TM-mode of Z-cut couplers. The method can be used to correct the uncertainty of the coupling ratio for directional couplers that occurs during fabrication process.  相似文献

For developing large area opto-electronic silicon-on-insulator (SOI) devices, the optical coupler is a basic key device. In this article, the authors design and simulate 1 2 2 directional waveguide coupling and Y-branch coupling optical couplers based on Unibond SOI rib waveguides. The beam propagation method (BPM) is used for light propagation analysis. The simulation results and comparisons of the two kinds of optical couplers are reported. The S-bend waveguide for attaching to the two kinds of SOI optical coupler is also analyzed by BPM. We find that the directional coupler has lower power loss, but the Y-junction coupler is more wavelength insensitive with the same device size and splitting angle. The fabrication tolerance analysis shows Y-junction coupler has better fabrication characteristics.  相似文献

The propagation of solitons through optical couplers is studied here in this paper. Both the twin-core couplers as well as the multiple-core couplers are considered here in this paper. The parameter dynamics of the solitons that are governed by the coupled generalized nonlinear Schrodinger's equation, due to non-Kerr law nonlinearity, has been obtained for such couplers.  相似文献
