Rheology, morphology and mechanical properties of binary PE and EVA blends together with their thermal behavior were studied. The results of rheological studies showed that, for given PE and EVA, the interfacial interaction in PE-rich blends is higher than EVA-rich blends, which in turn led to finer and well-distributed morphology in PE-rich blends. Using two different models, the phase inversion composition was predicted to be in 45 and 47 wt% of the PE phase. This was justified by morphological studies, where a clear co-continuous morphology for 50/50 blend was observed. The tensile strength for PE-rich blends showed positive deviation from mixing rule, whereas the 50/50 blend and EVA-rich blends displayed negative deviation. These results were in a good agreement with the results of viscoelastic behavior of the blends. The elongation at break was found to follow the same trend as tensile strength except for 90/10 PE/EVA blend. The latter was explained in terms of the effect of higher co-crystallization in 90/10 composition, which increased the tensile strength and decreased the elongation at break in this composition. The results of thermal behavior of the blends indicated that the melting temperatures of PE and EVA decrease and increase, respectively, due to the dilution effect of EVA on PE and nucleation effect of PE on EVA.  相似文献

Polypropylene (PP) blends with acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) were prepared using the styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene copolymer (SEBS) as a compatibilizing agent. The blends were prepared in a co-rotational twin-screw extruder and injection molded. Torque rheometry, Izod impact strength, tensile strength, heat deflection temperature (HDT), differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry, and scanning electron microscopy properties were investigated. The results showed that there was an increase in the torque of PA6/ABS blends with SEBS addition. The PP/ABS/SEBS (60/25/15%) blend showed significant improvement in impact strength, elongation at break, thermal stability, and HDT compared with neat PP. The elastic modulus and tensile strength have not been significantly reduced. The degree of crystallinity and the crystalline melting temperature increased, indicating a nucleating effect of ABS. The PP/ABS blends compatibilized with 12.5% and 15% SEBS presented morphology with well-distributed fine ABS particles with good interfacial adhesion. As a result, thermal stability has been improved over pure PP and the mechanical properties have been increased, especially impact strength. In general, the addition of the SEBS copolymer as the PP/ABS blend compatibilizer has the advantage of refining the blend's morphology, increasing its toughness and thermal stability, without jeopardizing other PP properties.  相似文献

A series of PB-g-SAN impact modifiers with different ratio of PB to SAN ranging from 20.6/79.4 to 91.9/8.1 were synthesized by seeded emulsion polymerization. ABS blends were prepared by blending these PB-g-SAN impact modifiers and SAN resin. The rubber concentration of these ABS blends was kept at a constant value of 15 wt%. The influences of different impact modifier on the mechanical behavior and morphology of ABS blends have been investigated. The dynamic mechanical analysis on ABS blends shows that Tg of the rubbery phase shifts to a lower temperature, (tan δ)max of the rubbery phase increases and then decreases with the increase of PB concentration in PB-g-SAN impact modifier. A uniform dispersion of rubber particles in the matrix can be observed when PB/SAN ratio in PB-g-SAN impact modifier is in the range from 20.6/79.4 to 71.7/28.3. When it exceeds 71.7/28.3, an agglomeration of rubber particles occurs. The mechanical tests indicate that the ABS blend, in which PB/SAN ratio in the impact modifier is 71.7/28.3, has the maximum impact strength and yield strength.  相似文献

Rheological, thermal, and mechanical properties of polypropylene homo polymer (PPH)/amorphous poly alpha olefin (APAO) blends as a function of molecular weight, comonomer type and content, and blend composition have been investigated. Homo APAO grade showed better compatibility than copolymerized ones in terms of rheological and thermal properties. The mechanical strength showed strong dependence on APAO content and type, and the impact strength and melt index rapidly increased for certain types of APAO at and above 30 wt%. On comparison with commercially used PPH/ethylene–propylene rubber (EPR) blend system, it is supposed that PPH/APAO blend can be successfully used in thermoplastic polyolefin applications. The PVC/ABS blends were degradated by means of isothermal thermogravimetry at temperatures at 210...240°C in nitrogen. Applying the stationary point method to the data obtained from thermogravimetric curves, apparent activation energy, preexponential factor and compensation parameter for each blend were calculated. The constancy of compensation parameters points to an unchanged mechanism of poly (vinyl-chloride) (PVC) thermal degradation in the presence of acrylonitrile butadiene-styrene (ABS). Upon increasing the fraction of ABS in the blend up to 50% only the kinetics of the process is changed.  相似文献

Polystyrene/polybutadiene (PS/PB) blends with different plastic/rubber ratios were prepared by melt mixing. A detailed investigation on phase morphology development of 30/70 wt.% PS/PB blends as a function of processing conditions was quantitatively analyzed. Morphology is developed at the initial stages of mixing. Suitable blending conditions resulting in optimum phase morphology were obtained at 180 °C, 60 rpm and at 8 min mixing time. Phase morphologies of the blends were also studied as a function of composition. Mechanical properties of the blends were measured. Attempts were made to correlate the morphologies with the properties. Parallel-Voids model has been applied to characterize phase morphology of these blends.  相似文献

Polystyrene (PS), being an amorphous polymer is immiscible with other polymers. To engender miscible blends, PS has been functionalized with an active amino‐functional group on the molecular chains of PS to yield amino‐substituted polystyrene (APS), which serves as a reactive compatibilizer. The compatibilization effect of amino functionalized polystyrene on the rubber toughening was explored and results were compared in terms of morphology, thermal, and mechanical properties of PS/SEBS‐g‐MA versus APS/SEBS‐g‐MA blends. In addition, the effect of rubber content on the blend morphology and mechanical properties were investigated. An appreciable change in the thermal stability of APS blends in comparison with PS blend has been probed. A marked correlation has been observed between phase morphology and thermal stability. Use of APS produced the compatibilized blends which render improved blend morphology, enhanced thermal and mechanical properties. Optimal thermal, morphological and mechanical profiles were depicted by 20‐wt% APS blend. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Binary blends of unbranched polyethylene (PE) and 5-10% model ethylene-butene random copolymers are used to determine the effects of composition heterogeneity on phase separation in the melt, semicrystalline morphology, plane strain fracture toughness JC and tensile modulus and yield strength. Slowly cooled samples of melt-miscible blends are appreciably tougher (JC = 5.2 kJ/m2) than unblended PE (JC = 2.7 kJ/m2). A blend with the same average short chain branch concentration, but which is phase separated in the melt state, has JC= 3.3 kJ/m2; dispersed domains of amorphous polymer have little effect on toughness. Enhanced toughness is associated with nonuniform morphology formed on slow cooling “one phase” melts composed of chains with different amounts of branching. The relative number of chemically different chains, as opposed to absolute branch concentrations, seems most important. Tensile properties are relatively unaffected by blending at these levels. Results from these model blends are used to consider the properties of compositionally heterogeneous ethylene copolymers. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The morphology, thermal and mechanical properties of polystyrene (PS) blends with 2.5-20 wt% of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) have been studied. The measurement of the glass transition temperature (Tg) from the maxima of tan δ data using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis showed that the blends were incompatible and homogenously distributed only within a limited range of PVC contents in PS. The value of the storage modulus was found to increase initially but then decreased with further addition of PVC in the matrix. Distribution of the phases in the virgin and degraded blends was also studied through scanning electron microscopy. The thermogravimetric studies on these blends were carried out under inert atmosphere from ambient to 800 °C at different heating rates varying from 2.5 to 20 °C/min. The thermal decomposition temperatures of blends were found higher than that of pure PS which indicated the stabilizing effects of PVC on PS. The effect varies with the heating rates and the composition of the blends and the phenomenon has been explained due to changing morphology of the blends with composition and the degradation time which affect the interfacial interaction between the degrading products from the polymer components. The kinetic parameters of the degradation process calculated from a method described by Ozawa have been reported for these blends.  相似文献

The effect of nanoclay fraction on the linear and non-linear tensile properties of a polyethylene/polyamide 12 blend with droplet morphology was investigated. All ternary blends were prepared at a fixed polyamide (PA) weight fraction of 20%, and at clay volume fractions varying from 0.5 to 2.5% relative to PA. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the morphology of the blends and the clay interphase structure. The nanoclay content was shown to strongly influence both linear and non-linear tensile properties. Young's modulus, elongation at yield, yield strength, tensile strength and elongation at break as a function of clay fraction were studied and discussed in terms of morphological changes and strain-induced structural reorganization of the clay interphase.  相似文献

Blends of an aromatic polyethersulfone (commercial name Victrex) and a polyimide (commercial name Matrimid 5218), the condensation product of 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride and 5(6)-amino-1-(4′-aminophenyl)-1,3,3′-trimethylindane, were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, and rheological techniques. The blends appeared to be miscible over the whole range of compositions when cast as films or precipitated from solution in a number of solvents. After annealing above the apparent phase boundary, located above Tg, the blends were irreversibly phase separated indicating that the observed phase boundary does not represent a true state of equilibrium. Only a narrow “processing window” was found for blends containing up to 20 wt % polyimide. Rheological measurements in this range of compositions indicated that blending polyethersulfone with polyimide increases the complex viscosity and the elastic modulus of the blends. For blends containing more than 10 wt % polyimide, abrupt changes in the rheological properties were observed at temperatures above the phase boundary. These changes may be consistent with the formation of a network structure (due to phase separation and/or crosslinking). Blends containing less than 10 wt % polyimide exhibited stable rheological properties after heating at 320°C for 20 min, indicating the existence of thermodynamic equilibrium.  相似文献

The deformation mechanisms during fracture of a Nylon 6/ABS blend compatibilized with an imidized acrylic polymer were compared to those of an uncompatibilized blend. A postmortem examination of deformed zones in samples loaded to failure in a double-notch four-point-bend geometry was made using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). For the compatibilized blend, cavitation of the rubber particles followed by massive shear yielding of the polyamide matrix was concluded to be the sequence of events leading to toughness; while, for the brittle uncompatibilized blend, the evidence indicated that a lack of adhesion at the Nylon-ABS interface prevented the rubber particles from cavitating and the subsequent plastic deformation of the polyamide matrix. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Rheological, morphological and thermo-mechanical responses of poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/ethylene-co-vinyl-acetate copolymer (EVA) blends at EVA volume fractions varying in the range of 0–0.35 were evaluated. The micro-structural analysis demonstrated dispersive mixing at low content and co-continuous morphology at 30 wt % of EVA in PLA. Dynamic rheology demonstrated enhanced storage modulus and complex viscosity (η*) with increase in frequency of the blends indicated strong phase interaction. Cole-Cole and Han plots indicated partial miscibility and incompatibility between the polymer matrix and the dispersed phase. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) revealed slight increase in damping parameters which indicated interaction or reinforcement in the blends. Additionally, the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of the blends showed two step degradation and enhanced thermal stability.  相似文献

The effects of the addition of diblock copolymer poly(styrene‐b‐ethylene‐co‐propylene) (SEP) to isotactic polypropylene (iPP) on the morphology and mechanical properties were investigated. Phase morphologies of iPP/SEP blends up to a 70/30 weight ratio, prepared in Brabender Plasticoder, were studied with optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. The addition of 2.5 wt % SEP caused a nucleation effect (by decreasing the crystallite and spherulite size) and randomization of the crystallites. With further SEP addition, the crystallite and spherulite size increased because of prolonged solidification and crystallization and achieved the maximum in the 80/20 iPP/SEP blend. This maximum was a result of the appearance of β spherulites and the presence of mixed α spherulites in the 80/20 iPP/SEP blend. Dispersed SEP particles were irregular and elongated clusters consisting of oval and spherical core–shell microdomains or SEP micelles. SEP clusters accommodated their shapes to interlamellar and interspherulitic regions, which enabled a well‐developed spherulitization even in the 70/30 iPP/SEP blend. The addition of SEP decreased the yield stress, elongation at yield, and Young's modulus but significantly improved the notched impact strength with respect to the strength of pure iPP at room temperature. Some theoretical models for the determination of Young's modulus of iPP/SEP blends were applied for a comparison with the experimental results. The experimental line was closest to the Takayanagi series model. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 39: 566–580, 2001  相似文献

A series of PA11/PHAE blends was prepared by melt mixing across the full composition range. Films were obtained for each composition by an extrusion-cast process keeping the same processing conditions. The blends exhibited a two phase morphology. PHAE-rich nodules surrounded by the PA11-rich matrix were observed for PA11 contents higher than 50 wt% in the blends. For lower PA11 weight amounts, PA11 became the dispersed phase and appeared as long fibrillar domains lying in the plane of the film. PA11/PHAE interactions were discussed from DSC and DMA analyses. The effects of the blend composition and morphology on mechanical properties in the linear range and on hydrogen barrier properties were investigated. Hydrogen permeability decreased with increasing amount of PHAE in the blends. A confrontation between the experimental permeability values and the theoretical ones calculated by taking account of the specific properties and morphology of the PA11- and PHAE-rich phases was carried out. In the films series under study, the improvement of hydrogen barrier properties was mainly related to the blend composition whereas a significant effect of the blend morphology was observed on mechanical properties in the rubbery state.  相似文献

This article reports the results of an investigation into the time‐dependent morphological and rheological changes that accompany the in‐situ polymerization of blends composed of poly(hydroxyether of bisphenol A) (phenoxy) and poly(styrene‐co‐acrylonitrile) (SAN). The rheological behavior was monitored continuously during the in‐situ polymerization, whereas the miscibility and phase structure of blends formed in situ were examined at discrete stages of polymerization by differential scanning calorimetry and transmission electron microscopy. In the blend with 30 wt % SAN, a co‐continuous blend morphology was associated with gradual changes in the dynamic moduli, suggesting that phase separation proceeded by spinodal decomposition (SD). In contrast, phenoxy‐rich dispersions were uniformly dispersed in a continuous SAN‐rich matrix in the blend with 50 wt % SAN, and the corresponding rheological signature revealed a sharp initial increase in the dynamic moduli, followed by slower growth after long times, indicative of phase separation via nucleation and growth (NG). The rheological property changes are closely related to morphology development and mechanisms of phase separation induced duringin‐situ polymerization. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. <正>The phase morphology and thermal behavior of various isotactic polypropylene(PP)/linear low density polyethylene(LLDPE) blends were investigated with aid of scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC),respectively. The effect of barrel(melt) temperature on the morphology, thermal behavior and the resultant mechanical properties of the injection molded bars was the research focus, and the influence of LLDPE composition was also taken into account. It was found that the mechanical properties, especially the tensile ductility and the impact strength, were greatly affected by the processing temperature. The samples obtained at low temperatures had the highest elongation at break and impact strength, while those molded at high temperatures had the poorest toughness. Two reasons were responsible for that:first, the phase size in the samples increased with the processing temperature;second, possible orientation existed in the samples obtained at low processing temperatures.  相似文献

Two ionomers, ethylene-methacrylic acid copolymer ionized with sodium cation (EMA-Na) and zinc cation (EMA-Zn), were employed as impact modifiers to prepare blends with polyoxymethylene (POM) via a melt extrusion. A copolymer of methyl methacrylate-styrene-butadiene (MBS) used as a co-impact modifier was also incorporated into the blends. The mechanical properties, thermal properties, morphology, and rheology were studied. A moderate toughening was observed for POM/ionomer binary blends, which was attributable to the rubbery natural and good adhesion of the ionomers. EMA-Zn exhibited a much better toughening effect than EMA-Na because of its higher elasticity and stronger interaction with POM. The incorporation of the ionomers into POM/MBS blends resulted in an improvement of mechanical properties, which was attributable to the compatibilizing effect of ionomer on POM/MBS blending system. The observation of scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that the finer phase domains were caused by incorporation of ionomers, which, acting as a compatibilizer as well as an impact modifier, reduced the interfacial tension and improved the interfacial adhesion between the phases. Differential scanning calorimetry investigation indicated that the presence of ionomer in the blends disturbed the crystallization of POM and resulted in a decrease in the crystallinity of POM. The evaluation of melt flow index revealed an increase in viscosity of the blends by incorporation of the ionomers, which was caused the ionic interaction between POM and the ionomers.  相似文献

Mechanical, morphological and rheological properties of polycarbonate (PC) and poly (lactic acid) (PLA) blends with compatibilizers have been investigated. Three types of compatibilizers were used: poly(styrene-g-acrylonitrile)-maleic anhydride (SAN-g-MAH), poly(ethylene-co-octene) rubber-maleic anhydride (EOR-MAH) and poly(ethylene-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (EGMA). The maximum value of the mechanical properties such as impact and tensile strengths of the PC/PLA (70/30, wt%) blend before or after hydrolysis was observed when the SAN-g-MAH was used as a compatibilizer at the amount of 5 phr. From the interfacial tension between PC and PLA which was determined from the weighted relaxation spectra using Palierne emulsion model, minimum value of interfacial tension (0.08 mN/m) was observed when the SAN-g-MAH (5 phr) was used. From the morphological studies of the PC/PLA (70/30) blends, the PLA droplet size showed minimum (0.19 μm) at the 5.0 phr SAN-g-MAH. From the results of mechanical, morphological and rheological properties of the PC/PLA (70/30) blend, it is suggested that the SAN-g-MAH is the most effective compatibilizer to improve the mechanical strength of the PC/PLA (70/30) blends among the compatibilizers used in this study, especially at the amount of 5 phr.  相似文献
