We investigated the mechanism by which a surface oxide layer on Pd(1 1 1) transforms to a PdO(1 0 1) thin film during oxidation with gaseous oxygen atoms in ultrahigh vacuum. Our results provide evidence that the precursor to bulk PdO formation is a distinct oxide phase that forms as small particles, referred to as PdO seeds, after the surface oxide saturates. With increasing oxygen coverage, the PdO seeds grow in size and eventually transform to more stable particles that agglomerate to yield a PdO film. Oxidation effectively ceases when the surface oxide layer is completely replaced by the bulk PdO film, demonstrating that the surface oxide is needed for PdO formation at the conditions studied. Both the kinetics of PdO formation and the final thickness of the PdO thin film depend strongly on the thermal stability of the PdO seeds. Below the decomposition temperature of the seeds (600 K), oxidation follows kinetics similar to Langmuirian adsorption and appears to be limited only by the rate of oxygen adsorption onto the surface oxide. In contrast, PdO formation above 600 K initially exhibits acceleratory kinetics, with the rates starting low but increasing steadily during the initial growth of PdO. We also observe a significant decrease in PdO(1 0 1) film thickness and improved crystallinity when oxidation is conducted below 600 K. We show that the trends observed in the oxidation kinetics and film thickness can be qualitatively explained within the context of a model in which the thermodynamic stability of PdO particles increases with increasing particle size and PdO seeds/particles coexist with a two-dimensional (2D) gas of oxygen atoms adsorbed on the surface oxide layer. This model suggests that the PdO particle-2D gas coexistence relation gives rise to three distinct growth regimes, namely, stable seed nucleation, metastable seed nucleation and oxygen dissolution into the subsurface where the latter is established at 2D gas coverages below the stability limit of a flat PdO surface.  相似文献

We utilized temperature programmed desorption (TPD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron energy loss spectroscopy (ELS), and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) to investigate the oxidation of Pt(1 0 0)-hex-R0.7° at 450 K. Using an oxygen atom beam, we generated atomic oxygen coverages as high as 3.6 ML (monolayers) on Pt(1 0 0) in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV), almost 6 times the maximum coverage obtainable by dissociatively adsorbing O2. The results show that oxidation occurs through the development of several chemisorbed phases prior to oxide growth above about 1 ML. A weakly bound oxygen state that populates as the coverage increases from approximately 0.50 ML to 1 ML appears to serve as a necessary precursor to Pt oxide growth. We find that increasing the coverage above about 1 ML causes Pt oxide particle growth and significant surface disordering. Decomposition of the Pt oxide particles produces explosive O2 desorption characterized by a shift of the primary TPD feature to higher temperatures and a dramatic increase in the maximum desorption rate with increasing coverage. Based on thermodynamic considerations, we show that the thermal stability of the surface Pt oxide on Pt single crystal surfaces significantly exceeds that of bulk PtO2. Furthermore, we attribute the high stability and the acceleratory decomposition rates of the surface oxide to large kinetic barriers that must be overcome during oxide formation and decomposition. Lastly, we present evidence that structurally similar oxides develop on both Pt(1 1 1) and Pt(1 0 0), therefore concluding that the properties of the surface Pt oxide are largely insensitive to the initial structure of the Pt single crystal surface.  相似文献

The structure of the ordered p(2 × 1) and p(3 × 1) phases of adsorbed oxygen as well as the formation of ultrathin NiO(1 0 0) layers on a Ni(1 1 0) single crystal are investigated by grazing scattering of fast hydrogen atoms. Via ion beam triangulation based on the detection of the number of emitted electrons, we obtain direct information on the structure of oxygen adsorbates and ultrathin nickel oxide layers. For oxidation using atomic instead of molecular oxygen, the gas exposure can be reduced by almost two orders of magnitude. We compare the experimental results with computer simulations based on classical projectile trajectories for grazing scattering of fast hydrogen atoms and test structure models for oxygen adsorbed on Ni(1 1 0) and NiO(1 0 0).  相似文献

The dispersions of low energy surface phonon modes of GaP(1 1 0) and InAs(1 1 0) measured with inelastic He-atom scattering along the and 0 0 1 directions are presented. Aside from the Rayleigh mode, additional distinct acoustic modes are observed as well as indications of optical modes. Contrary to results for GaAs(1 1 0), a rocking mode was not observed. The experimentally determined phonon dispersions are in excellent agreement with recent ab initio calculations by C. Eckl, et al. [1].  相似文献

We investigated the kinetics governing the transition from surface (2D) to bulk (3D) oxide growth on Pt(1 0 0) in ultrahigh vacuum as a function of the surface temperature and the incident flux of an oxygen atom beam. For the incident fluxes examined, the bulk oxide formation rate increases linearly with incident flux (ΦO) as the oxygen coverage increases to about 1.7 ML (monolayer) and depends only weakly on the surface temperature in the limit of low surface temperature (TS < 475 K). In contrast, in the high temperature limit (TS > 525 K), the bulk oxide formation rate increases with for oxygen coverages as high as 1.6 ML, and decreases with increasing surface temperature. We show that the measured kinetics is quantitatively reproduced by a model which assumes that O atoms adsorb on top of the 2D oxide, and that this species acts as a precursor that can either associatively desorb or react with the 2D oxide to form a 3D oxide particle. According to the model, the observed change in the flux and surface temperature dependence of the oxidation rate is due to a change in the rate-controlling steps for bulk oxide formation from reaction at low temperature to precursor desorption at high temperature. From analysis of flux-dependent uptake data, we estimate that the formation rate of a bulk oxide nucleus has a fourth-order dependence on the precursor coverage, which implies a critical configuration for oxide nucleus formation requiring four precursor O atoms. Considering the similarities in the development of surface oxides on various transition metals, the precursor-mediated transition to bulk oxide growth reported here may be a general feature in the oxidation of late transition metal surfaces.  相似文献

We utilized temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) to study the chemisorption of gas-phase oxygen atoms on Pt(1 0 0)-hex-R0.7° at 450 K and 573 K, and find that the types and relative populations of oxygen phases that develop are highly dependent on the surface temperature during adsorption. At both temperatures, oxygen atoms initially adsorb on defects associated with the surface reconstruction. Increasing the coverage to about 0.32 ML (monolayers) at 573 K causes deconstruction and population of a phase with apparent (3 × 1) symmetry that desorbs in a single feature centered at about 672 K. Saturating at 0.63 ML leads to the formation of an additional “complex” ordered phase that desorbs in a sharp feature exhibiting autocatalytic behavior as it shifts from approximately 631 K to 642 K. Uptake at 450 K also initiates deconstruction, but in this case two desorption maxima at about 652 K and 672 K grow simultaneously with increasing coverage to about 0.32 ML. The feature at 672 K is associated with the disordered (3 × 1) phase, while the feature at 652 K has not been previously reported. We attribute this new feature to desorption from disordered arrangements of high oxygen concentrations on (1 × 1) surface regions. As the coverage increases to about 0.51 ML, small amounts of the complex phase grow, while this “high-concentration” (1 × 1) and the (3 × 1) phases continue to develop. We conclude that the complex phase is energetically preferred over the high-concentration (1 × 1) phase, but kinetic barriers hinder its formation at 450 K, causing oxygen to become trapped in the high-concentration (1 × 1) phase. Therefore, the high-concentration (1 × 1) phase is metastable relative to the complex phase. Lastly, above about 0.51 ML, further adsorption at 450 K promotes the growth of Pt oxide islands as detailed in a future investigation.  相似文献

The interaction of O2 with Pd(1 1 1), Pd(1 1 0) and Pd(1 0 0) was studied in the pressure range 1-150 Torr by the techniques of temperature programmed decomposition (TPD), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). The oxidation of Pd was rate-determined by oxygen diffusion into Pd metal followed by the diffusion into PdO once the bulk oxide layer was formed. The dissolution of oxygen atoms into Pd metal followed the Mott-Cabrera model with diffusion coefficient 10−16 cm2 s−1 at 600 K and activation energy of 60-85 kJ mol−1. The bulk oxide phase was formed when a critical oxygen concentration was reached in the near-surface region. The formation of PdO was characterized by a decrease in the oxygen uptake rate, the complete fading of the metallic Pd LEED pattern and an atomic ratio O/Pd of 0.15-0.7 as measured by AES. The diffusion of oxygen through the bulk oxide layer again conformed to the Mott-Cabrera parabolic diffusion law with diffusion coefficient 10−18 cm2 s−1 at 600 K and activation energy of 111-116 kJ mol−1. The values for the diffusion coefficient and apparent activation energy increased as the surface atom density of the single crystals increased.  相似文献

The oxidation of the Pd(1 1 1) surface was studied by in situ XPS during heating and cooling in 3 × 10−3 mbar O2. A number of adsorbed/dissolved oxygen species were identified by in situ XPS, such as the two dimensional surface oxide (Pd5O4), the supersaturated Oads layer, dissolved oxygen and the R 12.2° surface structure.Exposure of the Pd(1 1 1) single crystal to 3 × 10−3 mbar O2 at 425 K led to formation of the 2D oxide phase, which was in equilibrium with a supersaturated Oads layer. The supersaturated Oads layer was characterized by the O 1s core level peak at 530.37 eV. The 2D oxide, Pd5O4, was characterized by two O 1s components at 528.92 eV and 529.52 eV and by two oxygen-induced Pd 3d5/2 components at 335.5 eV and 336.24 eV. During heating in 3 × 10−3 mbar O2 the supersaturated Oads layer disappeared whereas the fraction of the surface covered with the 2D oxide grew. The surface was completely covered with the 2D oxide between 600 K and 655 K. Depth profiling by photon energy variation confirmed the surface nature of the 2D oxide. The 2D oxide decomposed completely above 717 K. Diffusion of oxygen in the palladium bulk occurred at these temperatures. A substantial oxygen signal assigned to the dissolved species was detected even at 923 K. The dissolved oxygen was characterised by the O 1s core level peak at 528.98 eV. The “bulk” nature of the dissolved oxygen species was verified by depth profiling.During cooling in 3 × 10−3 mbar O2, the oxidised Pd2+ species appeared at 788 K whereas the 2D oxide decomposed at 717 K during heating. The surface oxidised states exhibited an inverse hysteresis. The oxidised palladium state observed during cooling was assigned to a new oxide phase, probably the R 12.2° structure.  相似文献

X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism have been used to study the growth process, chemical composition and magnetic character of iron deposited on ordered and disordered GaN(0 0 0 1) surfaces. On the (1 × 1) ordered surface the Fe grows uniformly but with disruption to the substrate surface, subsequently nitrogen desorbs from the surface, some of which diffuses into the Fe overlayer. The film is magnetically fractured, with high magnetic coercivity and broad switching fields. Conversely, the gallium rich disordered surface protects the underlying substrate from any disruption and initially induces non-uniform growth, the Fe clusters coalesce at ∼12 Å, to produce a uniform film with desirable magnetic characteristics. Films beyond this point (>12 Å) indicate sharp hysteresis loops with low coercivities. For the resultant film (36 Å) we measure a magnetic moment of 2.02 μB, in agreement with bulk bcc iron (2.068 μB.)  相似文献

The interaction of O2 with Pd single crystals including Pd(1 1 1), Pd(1 1 0) and Pd(1 0 0) in the pressure range 1-150 Torr was studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The Pd single crystal surface morphologies were determined by the oxidation conditions: O2 pressure, exposure time and treatment temperature. Oxygen dissolution into Pd metal followed by the formation of bulk oxide was observed. The dissolution of oxygen resulted in the increase of the inter-planar spacing between the first two layers, 9-14% increase after an exposure of Pd(1 1 1) to 10-25 Torr O2 at 600 K for 10 min, and 10-20% increase after exposing Pd(1 1 0) and Pd(1 0 0) to 1 Torr O2 at 600 K for 10 min. Elongated or semi-spherical oxide agglomerates along the steps nucleated and grew on both Pd(1 1 0) and Pd(1 0 0) surfaces after oxidation in 5-25 Torr O2 at 600 K. When bulk PdO was formed, the single crystal surface was covered with semi-spherical agglomerates 2-4 nm in size, which tended to aggregate to form a “cauliflower-like” structure. The single crystal surface area also increased during oxidation.  相似文献

A soft X-ray appearance potential spectroscopy (SXAPS) apparatus with high sensitivity was built to measure non-derivative spectra. SXAPS spectra (non-derivative) of Ti 2p and O 1s for TiO2(1 1 0)-1 × 2 and (0 0 1)-1 × 1 surfaces have been measured using low incident currents (about 10 μA/cm2) and a photon counting mode. Density of empty states on Ti and O sites are deduced by self-deconvoluting the spectra. The self-deconvoluted SXAPS spectra are qualitatively similar to those measured by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The Ti 2p3/2 spectrum shows two strong peaks which correspond to t2g and eg states. For the O 1s spectrum two strong peaks near the threshold are also found which can be ascribed to O 2pπ and O 2pσ states. These results suggest that the spectra almost obey the dipole selection rule, so-called the “approximate dipole selection rule”. The SXAPS spectra of Ti 2p and O 1s for the (1 1 0) and (0 0 1) surfaces resemble qualitatively, which is consistent with the XAS results. The spectra measured on the (1 1 0)-1 × 2 surface at an incident angle of 45° off normal to the surface and on the (1 1 0) surface sputtered by Ar ions indicate that SXAPS is very sensitive to the surface electronic states.  相似文献

The oxidation of the Pd(1 1 1) surface was studied by in situ XPS during heating and cooling in 0.4 mbar O2. The in situ XPS data were complemented by ex situ TPD results. A number of oxygen species and oxidation states of palladium were observed in situ and ex situ. At 430 K, the Pd(1 1 1) surface was covered by a 2D oxide and by a supersaturated Oads layer. The supersaturated Oads layer transforms into the Pd5O4 phase upon heating and disappears completely at approximately 470 K. Simultaneously, small clusters of PdO, PdO seeds, are formed. Above 655 K, the bulk PdO phase appears and this phase decomposes completely at 815 K. Decomposition of the bulk oxide is followed by oxygen dissolution in the near-surface region and in the bulk. The oxygen species dissolved in the bulk is more favoured at high temperatures because oxygen cannot accumulate in the near-surface region and diffusion shifts the equilibrium towards the bulk species. The saturation of the bulk “reservoir” with oxygen leads to increasing the uptake of the near-surface region species. Surprisingly, the bulk PdO phase does not form during cooling in 0.4 mbar O2, but the Pd5O4 phase appears below 745 K. This is proposed to be due to a kinetic limitation of PdO formation because at high temperature the rate of PdO seed formation is compatible with the rate of decomposition.  相似文献

We report on the growth of thin Co films on Pd(1 1 1) at three different temperatures 180 K, 300 K, and 550 K. The structure and morphology was determined by scanning tunneling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction. The growth mode was found to vary with temperature. For 180 K and 300 K, we observed a tendency to double layer growth for the initial layers while at elevated temperatures, the initial film grows in single layer. For most conditions, non-ideal three-dimensional growth was observed. Two-dimensional growth was only found for growth temperature of 550 K and coverages above 5 ML. Depending on temperature, the Co islands at low coverages exhibit three principally different shapes: dendritic at 180 K, hexagonal at 300 K and triangular at 550 K. For growth at 550 K and coverages above 5 ML, the islands changed to an irregular shape. This transition is most likely responsible for the transition to 2D growth. Further, the large strain is relaxed by the creation of a dislocation network with mixed fcc and hcp stacking. Depending on the temperature and coverage, a hexagonal or a triangular network was observed. Finally, we have investigated the effect of annealing Co films prepared at 180 K and 300 K. Heating to 490 K leads to coarsening and intermixing.  相似文献

The adsorption and decomposition of NO on a K-deposited Pd(1 1 1) surface were investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed desorption. For the K-deposited Pd(1 1 1) surface, two different NO adsorption sites were observed in addition to the Pd site. On the clean Pd(1 1 1) surface, the adsorption of NO was purely molecular and reversible, but on the K-deposited surface, the adsorbed NO decomposed at two different temperatures, 530 and 610 K. These results indicate that the NO adsorption and decomposition sites were newly created by the deposition of K onto the Pd(1 1 1) surface.  相似文献

The atomic structure of a well-ordered silica film grown on a Mo(1 1 2) single crystal substrate is discussed in detail using the experimental and theoretical results available to date. New photoelectron spectroscopy results using synchrotron radiation and ultraviolet spectroscopy data are presented. The analysis unambiguously shows that the ultra-thin silica film consists of a two-dimensional network of corner-sharing [SiO4] tetrahedra chemisorbed on the unreconstructed Mo(1 1 2) surface. The review also highlights the important role of theoretical calculations in the determination of the atomic structure of the silica films and in interpretation of experimental data.  相似文献

We have employed low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to follow the epitaxial growth of thin films of TiO2 on W(1 0 0). The films were grown both by metal vapour deposition of titanium onto the substrate in UHV with subsequent annealing in a low partial pressure of oxygen, and by metal vapour deposition in a low partial pressure of oxygen. LEED patterns showed the characteristic patterns of (1 1 0) oriented rutile. A systematic spot splitting was observed and attributed to a stepped surface. The calculated step height was found to be in good agreement with that expected for rutile TiO2(1 1 0), 3.3 Å. Titanium core level shifts were used to identify oxidation states as a function of film thickness allowing the interpretation in terms of a slightly sub-stoichiometric interface layer in contact with the substrate. In combination with the LEED patterns, the film structure is therefore determined to be (1 1 0) oriented rutile with a comparable level of stoichiometry to UHV prepared bulk crystals. The ordered step structure indicates considerable structural complexity of the surface.  相似文献

The potential-induced (1 × 1) → “hex” transition on Au(1 0 0) electrodes in 0.01 M Na2SO4 + 1 mM HCl was studied by in situ scanning tunneling microscopy at high time resolution (Video-STM). According to these observations the elementary units of the “hex” surface reconstruction, hexagonally-ordered strings in the Au surface layer, are highly dynamic nanoscale objects. Isolated “hex” strings exhibit dynamic fluctuations in structure and position on the millisecond timescale. These fluctuations exceed the mobility of multistring “hex” domains by several orders of magnitude and can be explained by collective dynamic processes within the strings. Furthermore, the observations reveal a novel 1D mass transport mechanism along the strings, details on the nucleation and growth of “hex” strings and complex string restructuring processes, facilitating “hex” domain ripening.  相似文献

In order to understand the first steps of the Cu(1 0 0) oxidation we performed first principles calculations for on-surface and sub-surface oxygen on this surface. According to our calculations, the adsorption energies for all on-surface site oxygen atoms increase, whereas the energies of the sub-surface atoms decrease with the increasing oxygen coverage. At coverage 1 ML and higher on the reconstructed surface, structures including both on- and sub-surface atoms are energetically more favourable than structures consisting only of on-surface adsorbates. On the ideal (1 0 0) surface this change can be perceived at coverage 0.75 ML.  相似文献

The epitaxial growth of Pd adlayers electrochemically deposited onto Au(1 0 0) has been studied by LEED, RHEED and AES. For the first 6 ML, the Pd deposits grow pseudomorphically on Au(1 0 0) with a lateral expansion of 4.5% with respect to bulk Pd. The strain in the expanded commensurate (1 × 1) Pd layers on Au(1 0 0) begins to be relieved at the Pd coverage between 6 and 9 ML range by formation of a compressed Pd film with respect to Au(1 0 0) surface and the compression increases continuously with thickness. At ca. 20 ML Pd the lattice constant of the film approaches to the bulk Pd and three-dimensional Pd islands develop since around 30 ML coverage. No superstructure due to the Pd-Au surface alloy can be found for coverages from monolayer up to 30 ML Pd on Au(1 0 0). A c(2 × 2) phase has been observed on the Pd-deposited Au(1 0 0) electrodes, which is ascribed to an ordered Cl adlayers adsorbed on Pd adlayers rather than a Pd-Au surface alloy.  相似文献
