Ion bombardment induced magnetic patterning (IBMP) was used to write in-plane magnetized micro and submicron patterns in exchange biased magnetic bilayers, where the magnetization directions of the adjacent patterns are antiparallel to each other in remanence. These magnetic patterns were investigated by non-contact magnetic force microscopy (MFM). It is shown that the recorded MFM images of the IBMP patterns in two exemplarily chosen standard layer systems (NiFe (4.8 nm)/NiO (68 nm) and Co (4.8 nm)/NiO (68 nm)) can be well described by a model within the point-dipole approximation for the tip magnetization. For 5 and 0.9 μm wide bar patterns the domain wall widths between adjacent magnetically patterned areas were determined to a≈1 μm. The minimum magnetically stable pattern width was estimated to be 0.7 μm in the standard system Co (4.8 nm)/NiO (68 nm).  相似文献

An in-plane perpendicular magnetic coupling between Ni80Fe20 and Co has been found in NiFe/NiO/Co trilayers for a NiO thickness ranging from 4 to 25 nm by magneto-optical Kerr effect and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements. In the easy magnetization direction of the Co layer, the Co coercive field H(C) increases when the thickness of the NiO layer t(NiO) increases. Because of the coupling, H(C) is always larger than for NiO/Co bilayers with the same thicknesses. The saturation field of the NiFe layer H(S) decreases when t(NiO) increases, indicating a weakening of the coupling. Numerical simulations show that the presence of interface roughness combined with a small value of the NiO anisotropy can explain the observed 90 degrees coupling.  相似文献

Co-doped NiO inhomogeneous films were synthesized by sputtering metallic Co chips and NiO together and the exchange bias of bilayers Co-doped NiO/FeNi was investigated. When Co content was up to 25.2%, the exchange bias field HE at the room temperature increased to the maximum which was about three times compared to the undoped-bilayers. With further increase of Co content, the exchange bias field HE and blocking temperature TB decreased. Analysis suggests that the configuration of nanometer-sized Co-metal clusters enchased into NiO matrix played an important role in the change of magnetic behavior for the bilayers.  相似文献

We investigate the competing effects of interlayer exchange coupling and magnetostatic coupling in the magnetic heterostructure ([Co/Pt]/NiO/[Co/Pt]) with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). This particular heterostructure is unique among coupled materials with PMA in directly exhibiting both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic coupling, oscillating between the two as a function of spacer layer thickness. By systematically tuning the coupling interactions via a wedge-shaped NiO spacer layer, we explore the energetics that dictate magnetic domain formation using high resolution magnetic force microscopy coupled with the magneto-optical Kerr effect. This technique probes the microscopic and macroscopic magnetic behavior as a continuous function of thickness and the interlayer exchange coupling, including the regions where interlayer coupling goes through zero. We see significant changes in domain structure based on the sign of coupling, and also show that magnetic domain size is directly related to the magnitude of the interlayer exchange coupling energy, which generally dominates over the magnetostatic interactions. When magnetostatic interactions become comparable to the interlayer exchange coupling, a delicate interplay between the differing energy contributions is apparent and energy scales are extracted. The results are of intense interest to the magnetic recording industry and also illustrate a relatively new avenue of undiscovered physics, primarily dealing with the delicate balance of energies in the formation of magnetic domains for coupled systems with PMA, defining limits on domain size as well as the interplay between roughness, domains and magnetic coupling.  相似文献

We detail measurements of field-driven expansion and zero-field relaxation of magnetic mirror domains in antiferromagnetically coupled perpendicularly magnetized ultrathin Co layers. The zero-field stability of aligned ('mirror') domains in such systems results from non-homogeneous dipolar stray fields which exist in the vicinity of the domain walls. During field-driven domain expansion, we evidence a separation of the domain walls which form the mirror domain boundary. However, the walls realign, thereby reforming a mirror domain, if their final separation is below a critical distance at the end of the field pulse. This critical distance marks the point at which the effective net interaction between the walls changes from attractive to repulsive.  相似文献

Recent advances in the study of exchange couplings in magnetic films are introduced. To provide a comprehensive understanding of exchange coupling,we have designed different bilayers, trilayers and multilayers, such as anisotropic hard/soft-magnetic multilayer films,ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic trilayers,[Pt/Co]/NiFe/NiO heterostructures,Co/NiO and Co/NiO/Fe trilayers on an anodic aluminum oxide(AAO) template. The exchange-coupling interaction between soft-and hard-magnetic phases, interlayer and interfacial exchange couplings and magnetic and magnetotransport properties in these magnetic films have been investigated in detail by adjusting the magnetic anisotropy of ferromagnetic layers and by changing the thickness of the spacer layer, ferromagnetic layer, and antiferromagnetic layer. Some particular physical phenomena have been observed and explained.  相似文献

We study soft magnetic bilayers having orthogonal, in-plane easy axes. The layers are thicker than the Bloch wall width linked to the anisotropy, so that a helical magnetization with a large angle exists across the sample thickness. The magnetic domains structure has been investigated at both sample surfaces, using magneto-optical microscopy. The domain structure is found to be similar to that of double films with biquadratic coupling. Two kinds of domain walls are identified, namely with a 90° and 180° rotation of the average magnetization. The detailed structure and energy of these walls are studied by micromagnetic calculations.  相似文献

We report high-resolution observations of antiferromagnetic (AF) domain walls at the surface of NiO and determine the typical width of AF walls in this material to be of the order of 150 nm. We observe a number of different types of domain walls, including double walls caused by long-range interaction between walls. We describe the observed wall profiles by a model containing the exchange interaction and magnetostriction as basic ingredients. The good agreement of this model with experiment shows that the formation of walls between antiferromagnetic domains in NiO and their properties are dominated by magnetoelastic interactions.  相似文献

The orientation of magnetic moments at the (100) surface of antiferromagnetic NiO single crystals is studied by x-ray linear magnetic dichroism in photoemission microscopy. T domains are observed terminating at the surface, with domain boundaries running mostly along in-plane [10] directions. From the detailed polarization dependence we find that the magnetic surface structure of a cleaved crystal is bulk terminated. This is in contrast to sputtered surfaces, where magnetic moments lie within the surface plane, forming a magnetically relaxed structure. These findings are of importance for understanding the exchange bias phenomenon.  相似文献

We have found that during giant magnetoresistance measurements in approximately 10 x 10 mm(2) NiFe/Cu/Co continuous film spin-valve structures, the resistance value suddenly drops to its absolute minimum during the NiFe reversal. The results reveal that the alignment of all magnetic domains in the NiFe film follow exactly that of corresponding domains in the Co film for an appropriate applied field strength. This phenomenon is caused by trapping of the NiFe domain walls through the magnetostatic interaction with the Co domain-wall stray fields. Consequently, the interlayer domain-wall coupling induces a mirror domain structure in the magnetic trilayer.  相似文献

Magnetic domains of BaFe12O19 have been imaged with a scanning tunneling microscope with a flexible, magnetic tip. We have found that Co and Fe thin films evaporated on a silicon tip, integrated with a cantilever, can give a high lateral resolution of less than 100 nm. We have observed domains 2 μm wide and domain walls 270 nm wide. Changes in the contrast along the domain wall have been observed. We explain the data using existing models.  相似文献

A multilayer Pt/Co/Ir/Co/Pt/GaAs heterostructures demonstrates a long term (to several hours) magnetic relaxation between two stable states of the magnetization of the system. The magnetization reversal of the heterostructure layers occurs both due to the formation of nuclei of the reverse magnetization domains and as a result of their further growth by means of motion of domain walls. The competition between two these processes provides a nonexponential character of the magnetic relaxation. At 300 K, the contributions of these processes to the relaxation are commensurable, while, at temperatures lower than 200 K, the contribution of the nucleation is suppressed and the magnetic relaxation occurs as a result of motion of the domain walls.  相似文献

The structure of domain walls in thin magnetic films has been studied by the Lorentz method using electron microscopy. The possible existence of the coinciding and opposite directions of rotation of the magnetization vector in Néel domain walls has been proved experimentally. The domain walls separating 90° domains have been found in single-crystal magnetic films. These walls consist of domains with a considerably smaller area than 90° domains.  相似文献

The [Co/Pt]n/Nb/[Co/Pt]n hybrids with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy reveal enhanced superconductivity with the presence, and the arrangements, of domain walls, where superconductivity persists. An in-plane field can manipulate the domain walls from labyrinth to stripe patterns and drive the hybrids from normal to superconducting. We observe anisotropic superconductivity in hybrids with stripe domains, along which enhanced superconductivity is realized.  相似文献

The authors present a new approach of internal field 59Co NMR spectra assignment leaving apart from “usual” decomposition on “pure” hcp and fcc stackings, and a set of stacking faults (sfs) sf1–sf5 with a certain lines position. The authors propose including into consideration not only cobalt structural features as well as its magnetic nature due to the strong ferromagnetism in Co metal. The last fact supposes an existence of different magnetic species such as magnetic domains, domain walls, and single-domain particles, thereby helping to spectral lines assignment according to both structural and magnetic origin. The examined sample contains fcc and hcp resonance peaks in both domains and domain walls giving the hcp to fcc ratio equal to 1.9, as well a significant amount of Co sfs, or Co in loose coordination, up to 10 %. The research exhibits a good agreement of all implemented techniques.  相似文献

We present a scaling analysis of the time evolution of domain walls in ultrathin magnetic films that are subject to different forms of uncorrelated and correlated disorder caused by the microstructure of the underlying template. The study is performed on ultrafine modulated Pt/Co/Pt trilayers grown on as-supplied and structured MgO (1 1 1) substrates employing polar Kerr microscopy for the imaging of the magnetic domains.  相似文献

The dependence on nickel oxide thickness in unidirectional and isotropic exchange-coupled NiO/NiFe bilayer films was investigated by magnetic force microscopy to better understand exchange biasing at microscopic length scales. As the NiO thickness increased, the domain structure of unidirectional biased films formed smaller and more complex in-plane domains. By contrast, for the isotropically coupled films, large domains generally formed with increasing NiO thickness including a new cross type domain with out-of-plane magnetization orientation. The density of the cross domain is proportional to exchange biasing field, and the fact that the domain mainly originated from the strongest exchange coupled region was confirmed by imaging in an applied external field during a magnetization cycle.  相似文献

The magnetic anisotropy in antiferromagnetic 500 A thick NiO films, before and after the establishment of an exchange bias field with Co84Fe16 ferromagnetic layers, was measured using magnetic linear dichroism in soft x-ray absorption. Both <111> textured NiO and untextured NiO films show exchange-bias induced in-plane magnetic anisotropy of nearly equal magnitude and with the Ni moment axis being nearly parallel to the exchange bias field direction. These results represent the first observation of the key step in the exchange biasing process, namely, repopulation of the antiferromagnetic domains whose magnetization axis is closest to the exchange bias field direction.  相似文献

Exchange-biased bilayers are widely used in the pinned layers of spintronic devices. While magnetic field annealing (MFA) was routinely engaged during the fabrication of these devices, the annealing effect of NiO/CoFe bilayers is not yet reported. In this paper, the transition from NiO/Co90Fe10 bilayer to nanocomposite single layer was observed through rapid thermal annealing at different temperatures under magnetic field. The as-deposited and low-temperature (<623 K) annealed samples had rock salt (NiO) and face center cubic (Co90Fe10) structures. On the other hand, annealing at 623 K and 673 K resulted in nanocomposite single layers composed of oxides (matrix) and alloys (precipitate), due to grain boundary oxidization and strong interdiffusion in the NiO/CoFe and CoFe/SiO2 interfaces. The structural transition was accompanied by the reduction of grain sizes, re-ordering of crystallites, incensement of roughness, and reduction of Ni2+. When measured at room temperature, the bilayers exhibited soft magnetism with small room-temperature coercivity. The nanocomposite layers exhibited an enhanced coercivity due to the changes in the magnetization reversal mechanism by pinning from the oxides. At 10 K, the increased antiferromagnetic anisotropy in the NiO resulted in enhanced coercivity and exchange bias in the bilayers. The nanocomposites exhibited weaker exchange bias compared with the bilayers due to frustrated interfacial spins. This investigation on how the magnetic properties of exchange-biased bilayers are influenced by magnetic RTA provides insights into controlling the magnetization reversal properties of thin films.  相似文献

Considerable progress in the field of spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM) has been achieved recently by gaining a high degree of control with regard to properties of the tunneling tip. It is found that by choosing the appropriate material for the magnetic thin film coating of the tip sensitivity to either the samples in-plane or perpendicular magnetization component can be achieved. Using SP-STM in external magnetic fields, domains and domain walls of two atomic layers thick Fe on a W(110) substrate are studied. A residual domain of enhanced stability against remagnetization is observed. Furthermore, a new imaging mechanism is identified which allows the use of even non-magnetic tungsten tips to observe contrast between magnetic domains and domain walls. The effect exploited is a modification of the electronic band structure which is induced by spin–orbit coupling. PACS 75.50.Ak; 75.75.+a; 68.37.Ef  相似文献
