Detailed studies on the dependence of the ECB effect on the applied frequency have been made in a nematic liquid crystal MBBA. It is found experimentally that, when the applied voltage is just above the threshold voltage, there are strong dependences of both the delay time and the mean deformation angle of the molecular director subjected to a constant voltage setup on the applied frequency. Those applied frequency dependences of the ECB effect can be interpreted in terms of the dielectric alignment in an electrically conducting nematic liquid crystal. We have measured the capacitance of the deformed liquid crystal cell varying the applied frequency. The experimental results are compared with the Gruler and Cheung theoretical prediction, and good agreements are obtained between them when the applied voltage is just above the threshold voltage.  相似文献

The addition of nematic compounds with high clearing points (Nh) to multiplexable nematic liquid crystals decreases the temperature dependence of the threshold voltage of twisted nematic displays. This effect depends on the dielectric anisotropy of the nematic liquid crystals containing Nh, as well as on the increase in T c. In the case of 4-n-butylphenyl 4'-(4”-butyibenzoyloxy) benzoate, the low threshold voltage was exceptionally compatible with a small temperature dependence of threshold voltage, and this result was attributed to the large temperature dependence of the dielectric anisotropy in comparison with that of nematic liquid crystals containing other Nh's.  相似文献

The dielectric constant and the dielectric loss of 5-n-pentyl-2-[4-n-nonyloxyphenyl]-1,3-dioxane were investigated in the region of 0.1 to 10 MHz. An isotropy temperature was detected, at which the static dielectric anisotropy Δε01 = 0. Using both the Freedericksz and the DAP effect, we measured the frequency dependence of the threshold voltage U0 and compared the results with those of the dielectric measurements. In the case of DAP effect we could find two different types of dispersions curves of U0.  相似文献

A technique is described whereby the threshold voltage of amorphous memory switches may be controlled by the parameters of the reset pulses used. It is shown that a train of up to 35 low-current reset pulses from a voltage source causes the switch threshold to rise progressively until it equals the generator voltage. Close control of threshold voltage in switch arrays is thus possible, temperature effects can be reduced and high-current pulses avoided. The method also effectively prevents degradation of threshold switches under dc operation.  相似文献

Recently we described a novel guest-host cell which exhibits a positive contrast (dark digits on a clear background) employing a mixture of a nematic liquid crystal with negative dielectric anisotropy, a chiral component, and a dichroic dye. In this cell, the cell thickness and the alignment layers are chosen such that in the absence of a field, the mixture shows a uniform homeotropic structure. When a voltage greater than the threshold value is applied, a helicoïdal structure is adopted, which absorbs the incident illumination.

In this work the expression for the threshold voltage is derived and compared with experimental results. Experimental results are also presented which indicate, for a given cell thickness, the influence of the pitch of the mixture on the contrast and the response time.  相似文献

Studies of dielectric permittivity changes under the action of a DC electric field on nematic 4,4′-di-n-hexyloxyazoxybenzene (DHAB) have been performed. Observations of time dependent processes occurring during the application of a voltage were made for samples of 0.5–2 mm thickness as a function of the applied voltage. The dielectric permittivity changes which are related to changes in the ordering of the samples were interpreted in dielectric as well as in electrohydrodynamic terms. Three voltage regions were distinguished which are characterised by ordering due to dielectric orientation, hydrodynamic laminar flow and turbulent flow.  相似文献

The Freedericksz transition of planar oriented Sc phases was studied experimentally with an electrooptical method and the theoretically predicted reorientation along the Sc tilt cone confirmed. Measurements of the threshold voltage and the switching times lead to the determination of the rotational viscosity and the elastic constant for five selected compounds with positive dielectric anisotropy.  相似文献

As shown for 4 liquid crystalline substances also smectic F and smectic I phases may be reoriented by an electric field similar to a smectic C phase. The threshold voltage of the effect was determined approximately. For one substance the tilt angle of the smectic C and I phase could be measured by means of the dielectric reorientation.  相似文献

The influence of a.c. electric field (10 kHz) on the IR spectra of the nematic phase of six p-alkoxybenzylidene-p,n-butylanilines with weak negative dielectric anisotropy was studied and the temperature dependence of the orientational order parameter and threshold voltage have been investigated. Experimental research on chalcogenide glasses is reviewed and an interpretation concerning the cause of threshold switching and the basis of the low-impedance on-regime is presented. Observed behavior is consolidated in terms of a single conductivity mechanism and two conducting species governing the off- and on-state electrical characteristics. Phenomenological equations and their consequences are given which are shown to be capable of successfully describing both in functional form and accurate magnitude a very wide variety of experimental data including current — voltage transient characteristics, the Haberland condition, delay time, maximum allowable interruption times, rise and decay characteristics and negative capacitance. Recent research is presented concerning two types of non-thermal radiative emission during the on-regime of a threshold switching event. Various switching models are described and critically discussed in terms of the experimental data and phenomenological equations.  相似文献

The authors have already reported that a DTN-cell (depolarization in a twisted nematic-cell) had several advantages to a matrix display such as a sharp threshold and wide viewing angle. But if the usual amplitude selection method is applied to a large scale matrix display using the DTN-mode, multiplex capability is limited by the cutoff frequency Fc, of a liquid crystal. Therefore, the authors investigated a two frequency addressing method, that is, simultaneous application of a constant low-frequency voltage and a variable high-frequency voltage. In this method, a liquid crystal with lower-Fc can be used. In addition, some advantages of extremely sharp threshold, high contrast and relatively fast response and recovery can be obtained by using a liquid crystal with large negative dielectric anisotropy. These advantages are useful for a large scale matrix display.  相似文献

The ability of homogeneously aligned nematics with a positive dielectric anisotropy to exhibit Williams Domain as a threshold effect is numerically investigated. A simplified two-dimensional model which has, already, given satisfactory results in the negative dielectric anisotropy case is used. The frequency dependence of the threshold fields obtained for materials with small dielectric anisotropies is in satisfactory qualitative agreement with the known experiments. The frequency dependence of the threshold spatial wavenumbers is calculated. In accordance with earlier work, a positive dielectric anisotropy nematic which normally does not exhibit Williams Domains, does so under the action of a stabilizing magnetic field. This effect is confirmed and the frequency dependence of the threshold fields as well as the assoiated threshold spatial wavenumbers, for various values of the stabilizing field, are calculated. In addition, the model predicts the existence of a class of positive dielectric anisotropy nematics which do not form Williams Domains whatever the applied magnetic field is. This suggests a distinction between three classes of positive dielectric anisotropy nematics.  相似文献

Dielectric behavior of nematic liquid crystals of p-methoxybenzylidene-p-n-butylaniline and p-ethoxybenzylidene-p-n-butylaniline have been investigated under DC electric field in relation to their optical behavior. Both dielectric permittivity and transmitted light intensity decrease at a threshold voltage of external DC electric field, and the latter reaches a constant low value at higher field, while dielectric permittivity increases via minimum to approach a constant value at higher field strength of about 2 × 104 V/cm. Such a change of dielectric permittivity under DC electric field is characteristic of nematic and supercooled states, and exhibits large dependence on both temperature and sample thickness. This dielectrical observation is discussed in terms of dielectric anisotropy of the nematic liquids oriented to the field, and the disturbance of molecular orientation due to the dynamic scattering at higher DC electric field.  相似文献

The switching delay time and transition time, and threshold voltage for the onset of switching in the amorphous semiconductor Si12Ge10As30Te48 have been measured under various conditions using rectangular voltage pulses. The results show that both the threshold voltage and the delay time decrease, but the transition time increases with increasing temperature; and that these switching properties are strongly dependent on the width and the repetition rate of applied pulses. It is proposed that the delay time is associated with the time required for the formation of a filament to cause switching, and that the transition time is associated with the transit time of a carrier across the switching filament. All the experimental phenomena indicate clearly that the switching process is energy-controlled.  相似文献

The flexo‐dielectric behaviour of a homeotropic MBBA nematic layer has been experimentally studied. Asymmetric strong‐weak anchoring of the homeotropic nematic layer was achieved by treating the glass plates – one of them with lecithin ensuring the strong anchoring and the other with usual soap ensuring the weak anchoring. The application of a dc voltage with a sufficient amplitude led to the appearance of a complex texture consisting of gradient flexo‐dielectric deformations including Schlieren texture with many singular points and zigzag flexoelectric walls. The application of additional orienting a.c. voltage brought clarification of the Schlieren texture resembling that of the smectic‐C liquid crystal. Inversely, the application of an ac voltage across the homeotropic nematic layer led to formation of a nice Schlieren texture. The additional application of a d.c. voltage created complex zigzag gradient flexoelectric walls which connected the singular points in the Schlieren texture. 在Si/SiO2衬底上使用聚甲基丙烯酸甲酯(PMMA)制备器件介电层的修饰层,改善介电层界面质量并诱导有源层生长,从而提高有源层的结晶程度。通过真空蒸镀法生长并五苯/红荧烯双层结构有源层,制备有机薄膜晶体管(OTFT),并研究器件性能随红荧烯层厚度变化的情况。测试结果表明,修饰后的器件阈值电压为-3.55 V,电流开关比大于105,迁移率达到0.0558 cm2/V·s,亚阈值摆幅为1.95 V/dec,器件总体性能得到改善。  相似文献

Abstract

The properties of nematic and cholesteric Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) with ellipsoidal droplets are reported. The shape of the droplets are modified by a shear stress during the preparation. Different values of the shear stress were used which permit an ellipticity ratio modification by a factor 10. The electro-optical properties are measured for different types of samples and compared with theoretical previsions: transmission or reflection under voltage, threshold voltage, response times. We also describe the preparation of the sample, the experimental apparatus used for the shear stress, and the expected theoretical quantities like response times. When the liquid crystals are nematics, we obtain an increase of the threshold voltages, as predicted. The relaxation time decreases with increasing deformation but the diminution is not as great as predicted. When the liquid crystals are cholesterics, the high deformations induce polygonal fields, which strongly modify the electro-optical properties of the micro-composite. The threshold voltages and response time at applied voltage decrease whereas the relaxation time is increasing.  相似文献

Cerium Oxide films were prepared by vacuum thermal evaporation from tantalum boat in a conventional vacuum coating unit. Current-voltage characteristics were studied for different film thicknesses. The breakdown voltage (VB) and dielectric field strength (EB) were calculated. It is found that the breakdown voltage increases and dielectric field strength decreases as the thickness of the film increases. The applicability of Forlani-Minnaja relation is discussed. Current-voltage characteristics were also drawn at different temperatures and breakdown voltages were calculated. The breakdown voltage decreases as the temperature of the structure increases but the variation is nonlinear. The variation of current density with temperature was studied and the activation energy for the migration of charge carriers was calculated and it is about 0.52 ev. Methods are described for making reproducible and robust vanadate-glass threshold switches both by a bulk and a thick-film technique; the latter method lendsitself to the large-scale production of the devices. The electrical characteristics obtained using dc, sine-wave and square-wave inputs are described and the various electrical parameters such as: threshold voltage, holding current, delay time, etc. are given. The results of a statistical analysis involving 30 alumina substrates with 12 switches on each are described, the population being analysed in terms of the standard deviation and mean deviation of the dc threshold voltage and the resistance of the off-state. An attempt is made to correlate the variation in parameters from device to device with variables involved in the furnace-firing schedule as well as the printing.  相似文献

A ropelike conducting polymer nanostructure was synthesized in this work. 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) was polymerized in presence of a nematic liquid crystal (5CB) giving rise to the PEDOT nanoropes with diameter 10–20 nm. UV–Vis spectra of the nanoropes was comparable with the lightly doped bulk PEDOT. However, unlike the bulk polymer, the nanoropes or helical nanofibres, separated from the medium could be re-dispersed in chloroform and could be blended with 5CB. Electro optical properties of 5CB were remarkably modified after incorporation of PEDOT nanoropes. The residual current for optical transmission, threshold voltage for Freedericksz transition and capacitance hysteresis of 5CB were substantially lowered after nanorope incorporation.  相似文献
