Issuing from a geometry with nonmetricity and torsion we build up a generalized classical electrodynamics. This geometrically founded theory is coordinate covariant, as well as gauge covariant in the Weyl sense. Photons having arbitrary mass, intrinsic magnetic currents, (magnetic monopoles), and electric currents exist in this framework. The field equations, and the equations of motion of charged (either electrically or magnetically) particles are derived from an action principle. It is shown that the interaction between magnetic monopoles is transmitted by massive photons. On the other hand, the photon is massive only in the presence of magnetic currents. We obtained a static spherically symmetric solution, describing either the Reissner-Nordstrom metric of an electric monopole, or the metric and field of a magnetic monopole. The latter must be massive. In the absence of torsion and in the Einstein gauge one obtains the Einstein-Maxwell theory.

A method is presented for constructing generalized 't Hooft monopole solutions in a gauge theory with an arbitrary gauge group. We derive restriction arising from the condition of finite energy. The radial oscillation of the solution is discussed. Using our method we reproduce all the SU(3) solutions known in the literature. Finite energy monopoles possessing magnetic charge in the range g0?kg0?(N?1)g0 are found in SU(N) gauge theories. Different charge quantization conditions are analyzed to understand the structure of our solutions.

Confinement in non-Abelian gauge theories is commonly ascribed to percolation of magnetic monopoles, or strings in the vacuum. At the deconfinement phase transition the condensed magnetic degrees of freedom are released into gluon plasma as thermal magnetic monopoles. We point out that within the percolation picture, lattice simulations can be used to estimate the monopole content of the gluon plasma. We show that right above the critical temperature the monopole density remains a constant function of temperature, as in a liquid, and then grows, as in a gas.

We review some properties of magnetic monopoles in non-Abelian gauge theories. Removal of Dirac string singularities and generalizations of the Wu-Yang solution that follow from this procedure are described. A discussion of the possible relevance of monopoles in strong interaction models and their role in quark confinement schemes is given. The magnetic monopole soliton discovered by 't Hooft and Polyakov, the first order formalism developed by Bogomolny, and extensions of these ideas are illustrated.Work supported in part by the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration under Contract No. EY-76-C-02-2232B*000.

The previously known analogies between four-dimensional compact U(1) lattice gauge theories and the two-dimensional planar model are extended to a number of other results. We show that the monopoles in the gauge theory renormalize the coupling constant α by an amount proportional to the susceptibility of the monopole gas. Confinement occurs when this susceptibility diverges. We argue that α is analogous to the critical exponent η of the planar model, and that the transition occurs at a universal critical value αc.We also define an analogue of the superfluid density for the gauge theory, in terms of the dependence of the free energy on the boundary conditions, and show that it is universally related to α. Finally, we show that the same physics emerges from a continuum U(1) theory with real magnetic monopoles.

We present a topological quantum field theory for magnetic monopoles in an SU(N) Yang-Mills-Higgs model. This field theory is obtained by gauge fixing the topological action defining the monopole charge. This work extends to the three-dimensional case the quantization of invariant polynomials in four dimensions. We choose the Bogomolny self-duality equations as gauge conditions for the magnetic monopole topological field theory. In this way the geometrical equation discussed e.g. in Atiyah and Hitchin's work are recovered as ghost equations of motion. We give the cocycles of the corresponding topological symmetry. In the N→∞ limit interesting phenomena occur. The functional integration is forced to cover only the moduli space and the role of the ghosts stemming from the gauge fixing process is to provide a smooth semiclassical approximation.

We show that a four-parameter class of (3+1)-dimensional NCOS theories can be obtained by dimensional reduction on a general 2-torus from OM theory. Compactifying two spatial directions of NCOS theory on a 2-torus, we study the transformation properties under the SO(2,2;Z) T-duality group. We then discuss non-perturbative configurations of non-commutative super Yang–Mills theory. In particular, we calculate the tension for magnetic monopoles and (p,q) dyons and exhibit their six-dimensional origin, and construct a supergravity solution representing an instanton in the gauge theory. We also compute the potential for a monopole–antimonopole in the supergravity approximation.

We investigate the role of massless magnetic monopoles in the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills Higgs theories. They can appear naturally in the 1/4-BPS dyonic configurations associated with multi-pronged string configurations. Massless magnetic monopoles can carry nonabelian electric charge when their associated gauge symmetry is unbroken. Surprisingly, massless monopoles can also appear even when the gauge symmetry is broken to abelian subgroups.

We propose explicit recipes to construct the Euclidean Green functions of gauge-invariant charged, monopole and dyon fields in four-dimensional gauge theories whose phase diagram contains phases with deconfined electric and/or magnetic charges. In theories with only either abelian electric or magnetic charges, our construction is an Euclidean version of Dirac's original proposal, the magnetic dual of his proposal, respectively. Rigorous mathematical control is achieved for a class of abelian lattice theories. In theories where electric and magnetic charges coexist, our construction of Green functions of electrically or magnetically charged fields involves taking an average over Mandelstam strings or the dual magnetic flux tubes, in accordance with Dirac's flux quantization condition. We apply our construction to 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles and Julia-Zee dyons. Connections between our construction and the semiclassical approach are discussed.

InSU(2) gauge theory colour confinement occurs if the vacuum condenses into a coherent monopole plasma. To verify this picture, the first question to be answered is whether the vacuum supports monopoles at all. Since we expect the monopoles to be dilute and massive in the deconfinement, phase, we begin the search there. The method relies on cooling equilibrium lattice gauge field configurations—which are generated at the appropriate temperature—until the underlying semiclassical solutions emerge. We then pass to the confinement region and ask whether the monopoles condense. Finally, we repeat the procedure for gauge groupSU(3). The results confirm our expectations.

We review the method of blocking of topological defects from continuum to lattice as a nonperturbative tool to construct effective actions for these defects. The actions are formulated in the continuum limit, while the couplings of these actions can be derived from simple observables calculated numerically on lattices with a finite lattice spacing. We demonstrate the success of the method in deriving the effective actions for Abelian monopoles in the pure SU(2) gauge models in an Abelian gauge. In particular, we discuss the gluodynamics in three and four spacetime dimensions at zero and nonzero temperatures. Besides the action, the quantities of our interest are the monopole density, the magnetic Debye mass, and the monopole condensate.

We apply to the Atiyah-Ward ansätze a systematic procedure locating symmetric monopoles in SU(3) gauge theory broken to U(1) × U(1). In particular we recover the known spherically symmetric monopole as a limit of a cylindrically symmetric separated two monopole solution in SU(3). We also discuss the spherically symmetric monopole in SU(n). This latter is the only instance where we have properly shown the smoothness of the Higgs and gauge fields.

We analyze the interplay of topological objects in four-dimensional QCD at finite temperature on the lattice. The distributions of color magnetic monopoles in the maximum abelian gauge are computed around instantons. Studies are performed in both pure and full QCD and in both the confinement and deconfinement phase. We find an enhanced probability for monopoles inside the core of an instanton on gauge field average. This is independent of the topological charge definition used. For specific gauge field configurations we visualize the situation graphically. Moreover the correlation of monopole loops and instantons with the chiral condensate is investigated. Strong evidence is found that clusters of the quark condensate and topological objects coexist locally on individual configurations.

We consider the superposition of infinitely many instantons on a circle in . The construction yields a self-dual solution of the Yang-Mills equations with action density concentrated on the ring. We show that this configuration is reducible in which case magnetic charge can be defined in a gauge invariant way. Indeed, we find a unit charge monopole (worldline) on the ring. This is an analytic example of the correlation between monopoles and action/topological density, however with infinite action. We show that both the Maximal Abelian Gauge and the Laplacian Abelian Gauge detect the monopole, while the Polyakov gauge does not. We discuss the implications of this configuration.

The potential A(r) ≡ M(r?×n?)(r?r·n?)?1 is a static solution to the classical theory of non-abelian gauge fields coupled to a point magnetic source, for any matrix M in the Lie algebra of the gauge group G. This solution is rotationally invariant if the eigenvalues of M in the adjoint representation of G are quantized in half-integer units, but is stable to small perturbations only if all non-vanishing eigenvalues are ±12. In this paper, for the gauge groups G = SU(N), it is shown which sets of eigenvalues of M are consistent with the group structure, which consistent sets are gauge inequivalent, and which consistent gauge inequivalent sets correspond to stable monopoles. It is found that there are N inequivalent stable monopoles, including the trivial case M = 0. Equivalence here is with respect to non-singular gauge transformations—the symmetry transformations of the classical theory. Singular gauge transformations are, in contrast, not symmetries but they are nevertheless useful for classifying solutions and for relating the above concept of local stability to the global, or topological, stability associated with the Dirac strings. In this context, it is shown that there are N distinct topological classes of monopoles, with the group structure of the center ZN1(SU(N)/ZN) of SU(N), that each class contains exactly one stable monopole, and that any other monopole in the same class has a strictly larger value of the magnetic charge magnitude trM2. This leads to an interesting physical picture of local stability as a consequence of the minimization of magnetic energy. The paper concludes with some comments on related topics: the empirical absence of magnetic charge, `t Hooft's calculation of magnetic energy, magnetic confinement, and spontaneously broken theories.

We investigate the gauge boson propagator in the three dimensional compact Abelian gauge model in the Landau gauge at finite temperature. The presence of the monopole plasma in the confinement phase leads to the appearance of an anomalous dimension in the momentum dependence of the propagator. The anomalous dimension as well as an appropriate ratio of photon wave function renormalization constants with and without monopoles is observed to be an order parameter for the deconfinement phase transition. We discuss the relation between our results and the confining properties of the gluon propagator in non-Abelian gauge theories.

The gauge-fixing constraint in a gauge field theory is crucial for understanding both short-distance and long-distance behavior of non-abelian gauge field theories. We define what we call “non-propagating” gauge conditions such as the unitary gauge and “approximately non-propagating” or renormalizable gauge conditions, and study their topological properties. By first fixing the non-abelian part of the gauge ambiguity we find that SU(N) gauge theories can be written in the form of abelian gauge theories with N ? 1 fold multiplicity enriched with magnetic monopoles with certain magnetic charge combinations. Their electric chargesare governed by the instanton angle θ.If θ is continuously varied from 0 to 2π and a confinement mode is assumed for some θ, then at least one phase-transition must occur. We speculate on the possibility of new phases: e.g., “oblique confinement,” where θ ? π, and explain some peculiar features of this mode. In principle there may be infinitely many such modes, all separated by phase transition boundaries.

We prove that corresponding O(N), U(N), and Sp(N) lattice gauge theories give the same Wilson loops as N → ∞. Therefore, magnetic monopoles cannot be significant in this limit.
