Multijet production rates in neutral current deep inelastic scattering have been measured in the range of exchanged boson virtualities . The data were taken at the ep collider HERA with centre-of-mass energy using the ZEUS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of . Jets were identified in the Breit frame using the kT cluster algorithm in the longitudinally invariant inclusive mode. Measurements of differential dijet and trijet cross sections are presented as functions of jet transverse energy ( ), pseudorapidity ( ) and Q2 with and . Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations describe the data well. The value of the strong coupling constant , determined from the ratio of the trijet to dijet cross sections, is . We present new experimental data on the highly excited levels in mercury using the two-step laser excitation and optogalvanic detection technique in conjunction with a RF discharge cell. The 6s7s 3S1 intermediate level has been accessed from the 6s6p 3P2 metastable level that is collisionally populated in the mercury discharge in the presence of a buffer gas at a pressure of about 1 Torr. Two beams fromtwo different dye lasers pumped with a common excimer laser were passed through the discharge cell containing mercury vapors. The first laser was tuned to 6s7s 3S1 level whereas the second laser was scanned covering the wavelength region between 544-458 nm. We have observed the 6snp 3P0 ( ), 6snp ( ), 6snp ( ) and 6snp ) Rydberg series. The 6snp Rydberg series to such high n-value has been reported for the first time. The first ionization potential of mercury is determined from the 6snp Rydberg series as 84184.15 0.05 cm-1. Some collisionally induced parity forbidden transitions have also been located that are identified as 6sns ( ) series.Received: 5 November 2003, Published online: 20 January 2004PACS: 31.50.-x Potential energy surfaces - 32.30.Jc Visible and ultraviolet spectra - 32.80.Rm Multiphoton ionization and excitation to highly excited states (e.g., Rydberg states)  相似文献

The production rates and substructure of jets have been studied in charged current deep inelastic e + p scattering for Q 2 > 200 GeV2 with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 110.5 pb-1. Inclusive jet cross sections are presented for jets with transverse energies GeV and pseudorapidities in the range . Dijet cross sections are presented for events with a jet having GeV and a second jet having GeV. Measurements of the mean subjet multiplicity, , of the inclusive jet sample are presented. Predictions based on parton-shower Monte Carlo models and next-to-leading-order QCD calculations are compared to the measurements. The value of , determined from at for jets with GeV, is . The mean subjet multiplicity as a function of Q 2 is found to be consistent with that measured in NC DIS.Received: 5 June 2003, Published online: 10 October 2003  相似文献

A comprehensive study of the impact of new-physics operators with different Lorentz structures on decays involving the b ?? s ?? ?+? ?? ? transition is performed. The effects of new vector?Caxial vector (VA), scalar?Cpseudoscalar (SP) and tensor (T) interactions on the differential branching ratios, forward?Cbackward asymmetries (A FB??s), and direct CP asymmetries of ${\bar B}_{\rm s}^0 \to \mu^+ \mu^-$ , ${\bar B}_{\rm d}^0 \to$ $ X_{\rm s} \mu^+ \mu^-$ , ${\bar B}_{\rm s}^0 \to \mu^+ \mu^- \gamma$ , ${\bar B}_{\rm d}^0 \to {\bar K} \mu^+ \mu^-$ , and ${\bar B}_{\rm d}^0\to {\bar{K}^*} \mu^+ \mu^-$ are examined. In ${\bar B}_{\rm d}^0\to {\bar{K}^*} \mu^+ \mu^-$ , we also explore the longitudinal polarization fraction f L and the angular asymmetries $A_{\rm T}^{(2)}$ and A LT, the direct CP asymmetries in them, as well as the triple-product CP asymmetries $A_{\rm T}^{\rm (im)}$ and $A^{\rm (im)}_{\rm LT}$ . While the new VA operators can significantly enhance most of the observables beyond the Standard Model predictions, the SP and T operators can do this only for A FB in ${\bar B}_{\rm d}^0 \to {\bar K} \mu^+ \mu^-$ .  相似文献

The Pauli exclusion principle (PEP) has been tested for nucleons (n,p) in and nuclei, using the results of background measurements with the prototype of the Borexino detector, the Counting Test Facility (CTF). The approach consisted of a search for , n, p and/or s emitted in a non-Paulian transition of 1P- shell nucleons to the filled 1S 1/2 shell in nuclei. Similarly, the Pauli-forbidden decay processes were searched for. Due to the extremely low background and the large mass (4.2 tons) of the CTF detector, the following most stringent up-to-date experimental bounds on PEP violating transitions of nucleons have been established: , , , , and , all at C.L.Received: 18 June 2004, Published online: 1 October 2004PACS: 11.30.-j, 24.80. + y, 23.20.-g, 27.20. + nG. Granular films of Co-cluster/C60 mixtures have been prepared by the co-deposition of well defined Co clusters (mean diameter 4.5 nm) and C60 fullerenes onto a cold ( 35 K) substrate. Films having a Co cluster volume fraction show a resistivity , typical for tunneling with a Coulomb barrier. The tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) has a value of TMR ( % for and is decreasing by almost one order of magnitude going to . We explain this unusual decrease of the TMR with increasing as caused by electron-doping of the C60 fullerenes due to the known charge transfer process occurring between transition metal surface and C60. Increasing electron doping may lead to an increasing probability for spin-flip processes within the tunneling barrier, resulting in a decrease of the TMR.Received: 17 March 2004, Published online: 3 August 2004PACS: 75.47.-m Magnetotransport phenomena; materials for magnetotransport - 73.40.Gk Tunneling - 73.40.Rw Metal-insulator-metal structures  相似文献

The production of , D0, D + , Ds + and charm hadrons and their antiparticles in e p scattering at HERA was measured with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of . The measurement has been performed in the photoproduction regime with the exchanged-photon virtuality and for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies in the range . The charm hadrons were reconstructed in the range of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity . The production cross sections were used to determine the ratio of neutral and charged D-meson production rates, , the strangeness-suppression factor, , and the fraction of charged D mesons produced in a vector state, . The measured and values agree with those obtained in deep inelastic scattering and in e + e- annihilations. The measured value is smaller than, but consistent with, the previous measurements. The fractions of c quarks hadronising as a particular charm hadron, , were derived in the given kinematic range. The measured open-charm fragmentation fractions are consistent with previous results, although the measured is smaller and is larger than those obtained in e + e- annihilations. These results generally support the hypothesis that fragmentation proceeds independently of the hard sub-process. We examine by molecular dynamics simulations the relaxation of polymer-solvent mixtures close to the glass transition. The simulations employ a coarse-grained model in which polymers are represented by bead-spring chains and solvent particles by monomers. The interaction parameters between polymer and solvent are adjusted such that mixing is favored. We find that the mixtures have one glass transition temperature T g or critical temperature T c of mode-coupling theory (MCT). Both T g and T c (> T g decrease with increasing solvent concentration . The decrease is linear for the concentrations studied (up to = 25%. Above T c we explore the structure and relaxation of the polymer-solvent mixtures on cooling. We find that, if the polymer solution is compared to the pure polymer melt at the same T, local spatial correlations on the length scale of the first peak of the static structure factor S(q) are reduced. This difference between melt and solution is largely removed when comparing the S(q) of both systems at similar distance to the respective T c. Near T c we investigate dynamic correlation functions, such as the incoherent intermediate scattering function (t), mean-square displacements of the monomers and solvent particles, two non-Gaussian parameters, and the probability distribution P(ln r;t) of the logarithm of single-particle displacements. In accordance with MCT we find, for instance, that (t) obeys the time-temperature superposition principle and has relaxation times which are compatible with a power law increase close (but not too close) to T c. In divergence to MCT, however, the increase of depends on the wavelength q, small q values having weaker increase than large ones. This decoupling of local and large-length scale relaxation could be related to the emergence of dynamic heterogeneity at low T. In the time window of the relaxation an analysis of P(ln r;t) reveals a double-peak structure close to T c. The first peak correponds to “slow” particles (monomer or solvent) which have not moved much farther than 10% of their diameter in time t, whereas the second occurs at distances of the order of the particle diameter. These “fast” particles have succeeded in leaving their nearest-neighbor cage in time t. The simulation thus demonstrates that large fluctuations in particle mobility accompany the final structural relaxation of the cold polymer solution in the vicinity of the extrapolated T c.  相似文献

A study of elliptic flow and two-particle azimuthal correlations of charged particles ( GeV/c) and high- pions ( GeV/c) in Pb + Au collisions at 158A GeV/c, close to midrapidity, is presented. Elliptic flow (v 2) rises linearly with to a value of about 10 at 2 GeV/c. Beyond 1.5 GeV/c, the slope decreases and possibly indicates a v 2 saturation at high . Two-pion azimuthal anisotropies for 1.2 GeV/c exceed the v 2 values by about 60 in semicentral collisions. This non-flow component is attributed to near-side and away-side jetlike correlations. While the near-side peak remains constant with centrality 0.23 0.03 rad, as expected for fragmentation, the away-side peak experiences broadening and disappears in central collisions. We extend a recent chiral approach to nuclear matter by including the most general (momentum-independent) NN-contact interaction. Iterating this two-parameter contact vertex with itself and with one-pion exchange the emerging energy per particle exhausts all terms possible up to and including fourth order in the small momentum expansion. Two (isospin-dependent) cut-offs are introduced to regularize the (linear) divergences of some three-loop in-medium diagrams. The equation of state of pure neutron matter, , can be reproduced very well up to quite high neutron densities of by adjusting the strength of a repulsive nn-contact interaction. Binding and saturation of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter is a generic feature of our perturbative calculation. Fixing the maximum binding energy per particle to MeV we find that any possible equilibrium density lies below . The additional constraint from the neutron matter equation of state leads however to a somewhat too low saturation density of . We also investigate the effects of the NN-contact interaction on the complex single-particle potential U(p,k f ) + i W(p,k f ). We find that the effective nucleon mass at the Fermi surface is bounded from below by . This property keeps the critical temperature of the liquid-gas phase transition at somewhat too high values MeV. The downward bending of the asymmetry energy A(k f ) above nuclear-matter saturation density is a generic feature of theapproximation to fourth order. We furthermore investigate the effects of the NN-contact interaction on the -term in the nuclear energy density functional . Altogether, there is within this complete fourth-order calculation no magic set of adjustable short-range parameters with which one could reproduce simultaneously and accurately all semi-empirical properties of nuclear matter. In particular, the conditions for a good neutron matter equation of state and for good single-particle properties are mutually exclusive.Received: 28 October 2003, Revised: 9 December 2003, Published online: 23 July 2004PACS: 12.38.Bx Perturbative calculations - 21.65. + f Nuclear matter - 24.10.Cn Many-body theory - 31.15.Ew Density-functional theory  相似文献

A new evaluation of the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon magnetic moment is presented. We take into account the reanalysis of the low-energy e + e -annihilation cross section into hadrons by the CMD-2 Collaboration. The agreement between e + e -and spectral functions in the channel is found to be much improved. Nevertheless, significant discrepancies remain in the center-of-mass energy range between 0.85 and , so that we refrain from averaging the two data sets. The values found for the lowest-order hadronic vacuum polarization contributions are where the errors have been separated according to their sources: experimental, missing radiative corrections in e + e -data, and isospin breaking. The corresponding Standard Model predictions for the muon magnetic anomaly read where the errors account for the hadronic, light-by-light (LBL) scattering and electroweak contributions. The deviations from the measurement at BNL are found to be (1.9 ) and (0.7 ) for the e + e -- and -based estimates, respectively, where the second error is from the LBL contribution and the third one from the BNL measurement.Received: 7 September 2003, Published online: 30 October 2003  相似文献

The historical importance of the original quantum mechanical bond theory proposed by Heitler and London in 1927 as well as its pitfalls are reviewed. Modern ab initio treatments of H- systems are inconsistent with the logic behind algebraic Hamiltonians H± =H 0 ± H for charge-symmetrical and charge-asymmetrical 4 unit charge systems like H2 and H . Their eigenvalues E± =E 0± are exactly those of 1927 Heitler-London (HL) theory. Since these 2 Hamiltonians are mutually exclusive, only the attractive one can apply for stable natural molecular H2. A wrong choice leads to problems with antiatom . In line with earlier results on band and line spectra, we now prove that HL chose the wrong Hamiltonian for H2. Their theory explains the stability of attractive system H2 with a repulsive Hamiltonian H0 + H instead of with the attractive one H0-H, representative for charge-asymmetrical system H . A new second order symmetry effect is detected in this attractive Hamiltonian, which leads to a 3-dimensional structure for the 4-particle system. Repulsive HL Hamiltonian H+ applies at long range but at the critical distance, attractive charge-inverted Hamiltonian H- takes over and leads to bond H2 but in reality, H , for which we give an analytical proof. This analysis confirms and generalizes an earlier critique of the wrong long range behavior of HL-theory by Bingel, Preuss and Schmidtke and by Herring. Another wrong asymptote choice in the past also applies for atomic antihydrogen , which has hidden the Mexican hat potential for natural hydrogen. This generic solution removes most problems, physicists and chemists experience with atomic and molecular H , including the problem with antimatter in the Universe.  相似文献

In our previous work we investigated electronically non-adiabatic effects in using crossed molecular beam scattering coupled with velocity mapped ion imaging. The prior experiments placed limits on the cross-section for electronically non-adiabatic spin-orbit excitation and electronically non-adiabatic spin-orbit quenching . In the present work, we investigate electronically non-adiabatic spin-orbit quenching for which is the required first step for the reaction of Cl* to produce ground state HCl+H products. In these experiments we collide Cl (2P) with H2 at a series of fixed collision energies using a crossed molecular beam machine with velocity mapped ion imaging detection. Through an analysis of our ion images, we determine the fraction of electronically adiabatic scattering in Cl* +H2, which allows us to place limits on the cross-section for electronically non-adiabatic scattering or quenching. We determine the following quenching cross-sections σ quench(2.1 kcal/mol) = 26 ± 21 ?2, σ quench(4.0 kcal/mol) = 21 ± 49 ?2, and σ quench(5.6 kcal/mol) = 14 ± 41 ?2.  相似文献

To determine nonspherical angular-momentum amplitudes in hadrons at long ranges (low Q2), data were taken for the pe, e'p0 reaction in the Δ region at Q 2 = 0.060 (GeV/c)2 utilizing the magnetic spectrometers of the A1 Collaboration at MAMI. The results for the dominant transition magnetic dipole amplitude and the quadrupole to dipole ratios at W = 1232 MeV are , Re( )%, and Re( )%. These disagree with predictions of constituent quark models but are in reasonable agreement with lattice calculations with nonlinear (chiral) pion mass extrapolations, with chiral effective field theory, and with dynamical models with pion cloud effects. These results confirm the dominance, and general Q2 variation, of the pionic contribution at large distances.  相似文献

The inclusive e+p single and double differential cross sections for neutral and charged current processes are measured with the H1 detector at HERA. The data were taken in 1999 and 2000 at a centre-of-mass energy of and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 65.2 pb-1. The cross sections are measured in the range of four-momentum transfer squared Q2 between 100 and and Bjorken x between 0.0013 and 0.65. The neutral current analysis for the new e+p data and the earlier e-p data taken in 1998 and 1999 is extended to small energies of the scattered electron and therefore to higher values of inelasticity y, allowing a determination of the longitudinal structure function FL at high Q2 ( ). A new measurement of the structure function is obtained using the new e+p and previously published neutral current cross section data at high Q2. These data together with H1 low Q2 precision data are further used to perform new next-to-leading order QCD analyses in the framework of the Standard Model to extract flavour separated parton distributions in the proton.Arrival of the final proofs: 11 July 2003  相似文献

The production rates of ultracold neutrons (UCN) with a solid deuterium converter have been measured at the pulsed reactor TRIGA Mainz. Exposed to a thermal neutron fluence of n·cm^-2·pulse^-1, the number of detected very cold and ultracold neutrons ranges up to 200 000 at 7mol of solid deuterium (sD2) in combination with a pre-moderator (mesitylene). About 50% of the measured neutrons can be assigned to UCN with energies E of where V F(sD 2) = 105 neV and V F(guide) = 190 neV are the Fermi potentials of the sD2 converter and our stainless steel neutron guides, respectively. Thermal cycling of solid deuterium, which was frozen out from the gas phase, considerably improved the UCN yield, in particular at higher amounts of sD2.  相似文献

The present work is aimed to compare the physical properties of $\mbox{Sn}_{1-x} \mbox{Fe}_x \mbox{O}_{2-\delta } $ (x?=?0, and 0.05) nanopowders obtained by sol–gel method, mechanochemical alloying, and mechanochemical alloying followed by thermal treatment. The X-ray diffraction of $\mbox{Sn}_{1-x} \mbox{Fe}_x \mbox{O}_{2-\delta } $ samples prepared by sol–gel showed peaks due to the cassiterite phase of SnO2 and thier Mössbauer spectra showed ferromagnetic and paramagnetic signals. The samples obtained by the milling process of SnO2 mixed with $\upalpha $ -Fe showed Bragg peaks due to SnO2 (rutile) with a line broadening caused by the reduction of grain sizes and the presence of microstrains. Mössbauer spectra for these samples revealed the presence of Fe3?+? as well as unreacted $\upalpha $ -Fe. In the case of mechanochemical alloying with thermal treatment, the incorporation of Fe3?+? in the SnO2 structure with the presence of impurities was observed.  相似文献
