We determine the form of the complex shear modulus G* in soft sphere packings near jamming. Viscoelastic response at finite frequency is closely tied to a packing's intrinsic relaxational modes, which are distinct from the vibrational modes of undamped packings. We demonstrate and explain the appearance of an anomalous excess of slowly relaxing modes near jamming, reflected in a diverging relaxational density of states. From the density of states, we derive the dependence of G* on the frequency and distance to the jamming transition, which is confirmed by numerics.  相似文献

For 2D regular dense packings of solid mono-size non-sliding disks there is a mechanism for bearing formation under shear that can be explained theoretically. There is, however, no easy way to extend this model to include random dense packings which would better describe natural packings. A numerical model that simulates shear deformation for both near-regular and irregular packings is used to demonstrate that rotating bearings appear roughly with the same density in random and regular packings. The main difference appears in the size distribution of the rotating clusters near the jamming threshold. The size distribution is well described by a scaling form with a large-size cut-off that seems to grow without bounds for regular packings at the jamming threshold, while it remains finite for irregular packings. At packing densities above the jamming transition there can be no shear, unless the disks are allowed to break. Breaking of disks induces a large number of small local bearings. Clusters of rotating particles may contribute to e.g. pre-rupture yielding in landslides, snow avalanches and to the formation of aseismic gaps in tectonic fault zones.  相似文献

We study the protocol dependence of the mechanical properties of granular media by means of computer simulations. We control a protocol of realizing disk packings in a systematic manner. In 2D, by keeping material properties of the constituents identical, we carry out compaction with various strain rates. The disk packings exhibit the strain rate dependence of the critical packing fraction above which the pressure becomes non-zero. The observed behavior contrasts with the well-studied jamming transitions for frictionless disk packings. We also observe that the elastic moduli of the disk packings depend on the strain rate logarithmically. Our results suggest that there exists a time-dependent state variable to describe macroscopic material properties of disk packings, which depend on its protocol.  相似文献

By minimizing the enthalpy of packings of frictionless particles, we obtain jammed solids at desired pressures and hence investigate the jamming transition with and without shear. Typical scaling relations of the jamming transition are recovered in both cases. In contrast to systems without shear, shear-driven jamming transition occurs at a higher packing fraction and the jammed solids are more rigid with an anisotropic force network. Furthermore, by introducing the macrofriction coefficient, we propose an explanation of the packing fraction gap between sheared and non-sheared systems at fixed pressure.  相似文献

We calculate the distribution of interparticle normal forces P(F) near the glass and jamming transitions in model supercooled liquids and foams, respectively. P(F) develops a peak that appears near the glass or jamming transitions, whose height increases with decreasing temperature, decreasing shear stress and increasing packing density. A similar shape of P(F) was observed in experiments on static granular packings. We propose that the appearance of this peak signals the development of a yield stress. The sensitivity of the peak to temperature, shear stress, and density lends credence to the recently proposed generalized jamming phase diagram.  相似文献

Static granular packings are model hard-sphere glass formers. The nature of glass transition has remained a hotly debated issue. We review recent experimental progresses in using granular materials to study glass transitions. We focus on the growth of glass order with five-fold symmetry in granular packings and relate the findings to both geometric frustration and random first-order phase transition theories.  相似文献

Above a small length scale, the distribution of local elastic energies in a material under an external load is typically Gaussian, and the dependence of the average elastic energy on strain defines the stiffness of the material. Some particular materials, such as granular packings, suspensions at the jamming transition, crumpled sheets and dense cellular aggregates, display under compression an exponential distribution of elastic energies, but also in this case the elastic properties are well defined. We demonstrate here that networks of fibres, which form uncorrelated non-fractal structures, have under external load a scale invariant distribution of elastic energy (epsilon) at the fibre-fibre contacts proportional to 1/epsilon. This distribution is much broader than any other distribution observed before for elastic energies in a material. We show that for small compressions it holds over 10 orders of magnitude in epsilon. In such a material a few 'hot spots' carry most of the elastic load. Consequently, these materials are highly susceptible to local irreversible deformations, and are thereby extremely efficient for damping vibrations.  相似文献

Dense packings of chains of hard spheres possess characteristic features that do not have a counterpart in corresponding packings of monomeric spheres especially near the maximally random jammed (MRJ) state. From the modelling perspective the additional requirement that spheres keep their connectivity while maximizing the occupied volume fraction imposes severe constraints on generation algorithms of dense chain configurations. The extremely sluggish dynamics imposed by the uncrossability of chains precludes the use of deterministic or stochastic dynamics to generate all but dilute polymer packings. As a viable alternative, especially tailored chain-connectivity-altering Monte Carlo (MC) algorithms have been developed that bypass this kinetic hindrance and have actually been able to produce packings of hard-sphere chains in a volume fraction range spanning from infinite dilution up to the MRJ state. Such very dense athermal polymer packings share a number of structural features with packings of monomeric hard spheres, but also display unique characteristics due to the constraints imposed by connectivity. We give an overview of the most relevant results of our recent modeling work on packings of freely-jointed chains of tangent hard spheres about the MRJ state, local structure, chain dimensions and their scaling with density, topological constraints in the form of entanglements and knots, contact network at jamming, and entropically driven crystallization.  相似文献

We investigate the Green function of two-dimensional dense random packings of grains in order to discriminate between the different theories of stress transmission in granular materials. Our computer simulations allow for a detailed quantitative investigation of the dynamics which is difficult to obtain experimentally. We show that both hyperbolic and parabolic models of stress transmission fail to predict the correct stress distribution in the studied region of the parameters space. We demonstrate that the compressional and shear components of the stress compare very well with the predictions of isotropic elasticity for a wide range of pressures and porosities and for both frictional and frictionless packings. However, the states used in this study do not include the critical isostatic point for frictional particles, so that our results do not preclude the fact that corrections to elasticity may appear at the critical point of jamming, or for other sample preparation protocols, as discussed in the main text. We show that the agreement holds in the bulk of the packings as well as at the boundaries and we validate the linear dependence of the stress profile width with depth.  相似文献

We have employed a computer simulation method for uniaxial compression to create random, but spatially inhomogeneous, disk and sphere packings in contact with exposed faces of their own close-packed crystals. The disk calculations involved 7920 movable particles, while the sphere cases utilized over 4000 particles. Rates of compression to the jamming limit were varied over two orders of magnitude, and in three dimensions this produced a clear distinction between the cases of jamming against (001) and (111) faces of the sphere crystal. Specifically, epitaxial order next to the (001) face was markedly enhanced by slowing the compression; for the (111) face the epitaxial order was quite insensitive to the compression rate.  相似文献

This paper studies the force network properties of marginally and deeply jammed packings of frictionless soft particlesfrom the perspective of complex network theory. We generate zero-temperature granular packings at different pressures by minimizing the inter-particle potential energy. The force networks are constructed as nodes representing particles and links representing normal forces between the particles. Deeply jammed solids show remarkably different behavior from marginally jammed solids in their degree distribution, strength distribution, degree correlation, and clustering coefficient. Bimodal and multi-modal distributions emerge when the system enters the deep jamming region. The results also show that small and large particles can show different correlation behavior in this simple system.  相似文献

We study the origin of the scaling behavior in frictionless granular media above the jamming transition by analyzing their linear response. The response to local forcing is non-self-averaging and fluctuates over a length scale that diverges at the jamming transition. The response to global forcing becomes increasingly nonaffine near the jamming transition. This is due to the proximity of floppy modes, the influence of which we characterize by the local linear response. We show that the local response also governs the anomalous scaling of elastic constants and contact number.  相似文献

We study the jamming of bead assemblies placed in a cylindrical container whose bottom is pierced with a circular hole. Their jamming behavior is quantified here by the median jamming diameter, that is the diameter of the hole for which the jamming probability is 0.5. Median jamming diameters of monodisperse assemblies are obtained numerically using the Distinct Element Method and experimentally with steel beads. We obtain good agreement between numerical and experimental results. The influence of friction is then investigated. In particular, the formation of concentric bead rings is observed for low frictions. We identify this phenomenon as a boundary effect and study its influence on jamming. Relying on measures obtained from simulation runs, the median jamming diameter of bidisperse bead assemblies is finally found to depend only on the volume-average diameter of their constituting beads. We formulate this as a tentative law and validate it using bidisperse assemblies of steel beads.  相似文献

We study the rheological properties of a granular suspension subject to constant shear stress by constant volume molecular dynamics simulations. We derive the system "flow diagram" in the volume fraction or stress plane (phi, F): at low phi the flow is disordered, with the viscosity obeying a Bagnold-like scaling only at small F and diverging as the jamming point is approached; if the shear stress is strong enough, at higher phi an ordered flow regime is found, the order-disorder transition being marked by a sharp drop of the viscosity. A broad jamming region is also observed where, in analogy with the glassy region of thermal systems, slow dynamics followed by kinetic arrest occurs when the ordering transition is prevented.  相似文献

We analyze the jamming transition that occurs as a function of increasing packing density in a disordered two-dimensional assembly of disks at zero temperature for "Point J" of the recently proposed jamming phase diagram. We measure the total number of moving disks and the transverse length of the moving region, and find a power law divergence as the packing density increases toward a critical jamming density. This provides evidence that the T=0 jamming transition as a function of packing density is a second order phase transition. Additionally, we find evidence for multiscaling, indicating the importance of long tails in the velocity fluctuations.  相似文献

We report a numerical study of the close packing of monodisperse hard spheres. The close packings of hard spheres are produced by the Lubachesky-Stillinger (LS) compression algorithm and span the range from the disordered states to the ordered states. We provide quantitative evidence for the claim that the density and structural order of the arrested close packing can be determined by the compression rate, i.e., with slower rates producing denser and more ordered structures. Through deeply analyzing the structure of the resulting arrested close packings, a transition region has been identified in the plane of density and reciprocal compression rate, in between what have been historically thought of as amorphous and crystalline packings. We also find clear system size dependences in studying the structural properties of the packings from the disordered ones to the ordered ones. These detailed investigations, on the structure of the arrested close packings, may provide a link between the glassy states and the crystalline states in the hard spheres.  相似文献

We report on two-dimensional computer simulations of frictionless granular packings at various area fractions φ above the jamming point φ(c). We measure the anisotropy in coarse-grained stress ε(s) and shear modulus ε(m) as functions of coarse-graining scale, R. ε(s) can be collapsed onto a master curve after rescaling R by a characteristic length scale ξ and ε(s) by an anisotropy magnitude A. Both A and ξ accelerate as φ→φ(c) from above, consistent with a divergence at φ(c). ε(m) shows no characteristic length scale and has a nontrivial power-law form, ε(m)~R(-0.62), over almost the entire range of R at all φ. These results suggest that the force chains present in the spatial structure of the quenched stress may be governed by different physics than the anomalous elastic response near jamming.  相似文献

We conduct numerical simulations of random packings of frictionless particles at T = 0. The packing fraction where the pressure becomes nonzero is the same as the jamming threshold, where the static shear modulus becomes nonzero. The distribution of threshold packing fractions narrows, and its peak approaches random close packing as the system size increases. For packing fractions within the peak, there is no self-averaging, leading to exponential decay of the interparticle force distribution.  相似文献

We describe the contact network of granular packings by a frustrated lattice gas that contains steric frustration as esential ingredient. Two transitions are identified, a spin glass transition at the onset of Reynolds dilatancy and at lower densities a percolation transition. We describe the correlation functions that give rise to the singularities and propose some dynamical experiments.  相似文献

The jamming transition from the free traffic to the oscillatory traffic is investigated with the unidirectionally coupled map lattice model which has the hyperbolic tangent local map. Spatio-temporal structures in the jamming transition are found with the use of numerical simulation. The traffic states are studied for both constant and noisy boundary conditions. We show the phase diagrams of different kinds of congested traffic. It is found that the noise at the boundary has an important effect on the traffic states. The traffic behavior in the coupled map lattice model exhibits a jamming transition similar to that found in the car-following model.  相似文献
