The mechanism of micelle formation of surfactants sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), n-hexyldecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and Triton X-100 (TX-100) in heavy water solutions was studied by 1H NMR (chemical shift and line shape) and NMR self-diffusion experiments. 1H NMR and self-diffusion experiments of these three surfactants show that their chemical shifts (delta) begin to change and resonance peaks begins to broaden with the increase in concentration significantly below their critical micelle concentrations (cmc's). At the same time, self-diffusion coefficients ( D) of the surfactant molecules decrease simultaneously as their concentrations increase. These indicate that when the concentrations are near and lower than their cmc's, there are oligomers (premicelles) formed in these three surfactant systems. Carefully examining the dependence of chemical shift and self-diffusion coefficient on concentration in the region just slightly above their cmc's, one finds that the pseudophase transition model is not applicable to the variation of physical properties (chemical shift and self-diffusion coefficient) with concentration of these systems. This indicates that premicelles still exist in this concentration region along with the formation of micelles. The curved dependence of chemical shift and self-diffusion coefficient on the increase in concentration suggests that the premicelles grow as the concentration increases until a definite value when the size of the premicelle reaches that of the micelle, i.e., the system is likely dominated by the monomers and micelles. Additionally, the approximate values of premicelle coming forth concentration (pmc) and cmc were obtained by again fitting chemical shifts to reciprocals of concentrations at a different perspective, and are in good accordant with experimental results and literature values and prove the former conclusion.  相似文献

The present work was undertaken with a view to understand the influence of a model non-ionic tri-block copolymer PEO-PPO-PEO (poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide)) with molecular weight 5800 i.e., P123 [(EO)(20)-(PO)(70)-(EO)(20)] on the self-aggregation characteristics of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) in aqueous solution (D(2)O) using NMR chemical shift, self-diffusion and nuclear spin-relaxation as suitable experimental probes. In addition, polymer diffusion has been monitored as a function of SDS concentration. The concentration-dependent chemical shift, diffusion data and relaxation data indicated the significant interaction of polymeric micelles with SDS monomers and micelles at lower and intermediate concentrations of SDS, whereas the weak interaction of the polymer with SDS micelles at higher concentrations of SDS. It has been observed that SDS starts aggregating on the polymer at a lower concentration i.e., critical aggregation concentration (cac=1.94 mM) compared to polymer-free situation, and the onset of secondary micelle concentration (C(2)=27.16 mM) points out the saturation of the 0.2 wt% polymer or free SDS monomers/micelles at higher concentrations of SDS. It has also been observed that the parameter cac is almost independent in the polymer concentrations of study. The TMS (tetramethylsilane) has been used as a solubilizate to measure the bound diffusion coefficient of SDS-polymer mixed system. The self-diffusion data were analyzed using two-site exchange model and the obtained information on aggregation dynamics was commensurate with that inferred from chemical shift and relaxation data. The information on slow motions of polymer-SDS system was also extracted using spin-spin and spin-lattice relaxation rate measurements. The relaxation data points out the disintegration of polymer network at higher concentrations of SDS. The present NMR investigations have been well corroborated by surface tension and conductivity measurements.  相似文献

The phase behavior and aggregate structures of mixtures of the oppositely charged surfactants cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) are explored at high dilution by pulsed field gradient stimulated echo (PFG-STE) NMR. The aggregation numbers and hydrodynamic radii of vesicles and mixed micelles were determined by a combination of viscosity and self-diffusion coefficient measurements. The average size of the mixed micelles was larger than that of micelles containing uniformly charged head groups. Analysis of the variations of the self-diffusion coefficient and viscosity with changing concentration of CTAB or SDS in the cationic-rich and anionic-rich regions revealed a phase transition from vesicles to mixed micelles. Differences in the lengths of the CTAB and SDS hydrophobic chains stabilize vesicles relative to other microstructures (e.g., liquid crystalline and precipitate phase), and vesicles form spontaneously over a wide range of compositions in both cationic-rich and anionic-rich solutions. The results obtained from conductometry measurements confirmed this transition. Finally, according to the capacitor model, a new model was developed for estimating the surface potentials and electrostatic free energy (g(elec)). Then we investigated the variations of electrostatic and transfer free energy in phase transition between mixed micelle and vesicle.  相似文献

The interaction between the nonionic water soluble polysaccharide hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose (HPMC) and the low molecular weight amphiphile sodiumdodecyl sulphate (SDS) has been studied by NMR1H-chemical shift measurements and by self-diffusion NMR measurements. The polymer concentration has been kept sufficiently dilute to avoid coil overlap and the SDS composition range goes from zero up to well above the normal CMC point. Although a different fraction was used, the present results agree well with previous results for the same system obtained by techniques other than NMR and show very clear break points that can be related to the polymer surfactant interaction. Furthermore, it can be inferred from the chemical shift measurements that the structure of the micellar clusters are similar whether polymer is present or not. From a combination of chemical shift and self diffusion measurements it is also found that neither the size nor the shape of the clusters seem to change significantly in the composition interval investigated.  相似文献

The self-diffusion coefficients of HDO and some surfactants in aqueous mixtures at different concentrations, below the critical micelle concentration, have been determined by means of the NMR, spin-echo pulsed field gradient method. The surfactant solutes chosen were ethylene glycol-pentyl alcohol (diethylene glycolpentylalcohol, ethylene glycol-hexyalcohol, diethylene glycol-hexyl alcohol, triethylene glycol-hexyl alcohol, tetraethylene glycol-hexyl alcohol, pentaethylene glycol-hexyl alcohol). The interactions in solution are studied by analyzing the solute self-diffusion coefficients extrapolated to infinite dilution. These values are compared with those of 1-alkanols. The slope of the self diffusion coefficientsvs. the solute concentration are correlated with the microscopic friction coefficients. A model for interpreting the experimental data is suggested.  相似文献

The interaction between the nonionic polymer poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) of molecular weight 20,000 and surfactants of various types [sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide, octyl beta-D-glucoside, and potassium laurate] has been investigated in an aqueous solution at 25 degrees C by 1H NMR pulsed-gradient spin-echo self-diffusion techniques. The SDS/PEO study was further complemented by component-resolved 1H NMR-based studies of the electrophoretic mobility of PEO and the alkyl part of SDS under the same measurement conditions. Through such combined studies, a much more complete picture of the binding and aggregation processes becomes accessible.

The model mixed surfactant system of sodium perfluorooctanoate and sodium decyl sulfate was carefully reexamined by a combination of nuclear magnetic resonance methods. Over a wide range of sample compositions, detailed (19)F and (1)H chemical shift data in combination with self-diffusion coefficients for the perfluorooctanoate and decyl sulfate ions are collected. All data are analyzed together in a framework that uses a minimal number of initial assumptions to extract the monomer concentrations of both surfactants and the micellar chemical shifts of (19)F and (1)H as a function of relative concentration. The main conclusion drawn from this analysis is that there exists neither complete demixing nor complete mixing on molecular or micellar levels. Instead, the experimental data favor a single type of micelles within which fluorinated surfactants are preferentially coordinated by fluorinated ones and hydrogenated surfactants by hydrogenated ones. The data are quantitatively interpreted in the framework of the first approximation of the regular solution theory (also called the quasi-chemical treatment) leading to an energy of mixing of omega = W/kT = 0.98 between the constituting surfactant types. These findings may help to resolve a long controversy about micellar mixing-demixing in this particular mixture and in its relatives.  相似文献

Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) techniques have been used to monitor the interaction of bovine serum albumin (BSA) with ionic surfactants such as anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), zwitterionic N-hexadecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonium-1-propane sulfonate (HPS), and cationic cethyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) at pH 7.0. The SAXS results have shown that in the presence of 5 mM SDS and HPS the radius of gyration (Rg) almost does not change as compared to the BSA free-surfactant solution; its value is ca. 30 Angstroms. In the presence of 5 mM CTAC the SAXS data indicate the presence of a particle with a Rg of at least 63 Angstroms, suggesting that in this case, a kind of protein aggregation takes place. In the presence of SDS and HPS surfactants at concentrations above 10 mM, a characteristic broad peak in the region of 0.12-0.18 Angstroms(-1) indicates the presence of micelle-like aggregates in solution. The SAXS curves are consistent with the "pearl necklace" model, where micelle-like aggregates are randomly distributed around the polypeptide chain. EPR results using 5-DSA and 16-DSA spin labels show that in the presence of BSA the EPR spectra are composed of two label populations, one contacting the protein and a second one due to label localization in the micelles. Evidence is also obtained for a competition of the surfactants with the spin labels for the high-affinity binding sites of the stearic acid spin labels as monitored by changes in the fractions of the two label populations as the surfactant concentration is increased. The effect of SDS seems to be stronger in the sense that increased SDS concentration leads to a complete transfer of spin labels from close protein contact sites to micelles, while for HPS, a significant immobilization of probe apparently remains even at higher surfactant concentrations. These two techniques are quite useful since SAXS monitors the overall properties of the scattering particle, while EPR gives information on the dynamics inside this particle and associated with label localization and motion.  相似文献

Control of the self-motion of a camphanic acid disk on water was investigated upon the addition of different kinds of surfactants (Triton X-100 and Brij58 as neutral surfactants, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a cationic surfactant, and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as an anionic surfactant) to the water phase. With an increase in the concentration of surfactant, continuous motion changed to no motion via intermittent motion (repetition between motion and rest), and the concentration regions of these motions were different among these surfactants. Although the concentration regions of these motions were determined by the surface tension for neutral surfactants, they were different than those for CTAB and SDS. These characteristics of self-motion are discussed in relation to the surface tension, depending on the concentration of individual surfactants, and the hydrophilic effect of the surfactants.  相似文献

The expressions for polymer self-diffusion in semidilute solutions, theoretically derived from the reptation mechanism, the blob concept and scaling considerations, are discussed and compared against experimental data from the authors' investigations and the literature. In the nonentangled (from viscoelastic data) semidilute solution, the experimentally observed concentration and molar mass exponents are in fair agreement with those derived theoretically. However, a quantitative estimation shows that the experiments cannot be explained by reptation. Experiments with polymer mixtures also give strong evidence against reptation. It is concluded, that in the nonentangled semidilute solution, the polymer self-diffusion is more complicated than simple reptation. This is also supported by recently observed long-range density fluctuations or cluster formation in this concentration region detected by scattering techniques and NMR-PFGT. In the entangled semidilute solution, the self-diffusion data are in accordance with the reptation mechanism; reptation being within a tube having approximately 20 blobs between entanglements.  相似文献

The self-diffusion coefficient of chloroform in poly(isopropyl acrylate)—chloroform solutions has been studied as a function of concentration and temperature by using the pulsed-field-gradient spin-echo NMR method. It is found that the self-diffusion coefficient of the solvent can be adequately fitted by using a simple free-volume approach with either a concentration or temperature superposition. It was noted that the free-volume parameters derived from the self-diffusion data are the same as those derived from deuterium NMR transverse relaxation-time measurements of the polymer in the same system. The equality of these two sets of experiments suggests a fundamental relationship between the two different processes. The simplest explanation is that the free volume necessary for the local segmental motion of the polymer and the translation of the solvent are similar.  相似文献

The complexity of biological membranes leads to the use of extremely simplified models in biophysical investigations of membrane‐bound proteins and peptides. Liposomes are probably the most widely used membrane models due, especially, to their versatility in terms of electric charge and size. However, liquid‐state NMR suffers the lack of such a model, because even the smallest liposomes slowly tumble in solution, resulting in a dramatic signals broadening. Micelles are typically used as good substitutes, with sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS) and dodecylphosphocholine (DPC) being the most widely employed surfactants. However, they are always used separately to mimic prokaryotic and eukaryotic membranes, respectively, and accurate investigations as a function of surface charge cannot be performed. In this work, the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of binary mixtures with different SDS/DPC ratios has been determined by following the chemical shift variation of selected 1H and 31P NMR signals as a function of total surfactant concentration. The regular solution theory and the Motomura's formalism have been applied to characterize the micellization both in water and in phosphate buffer saline, and results were compared with those obtained directly from the experimental NMR chemical shift. The ζ‐potential and size distribution of the mixed micelles have been estimated with dynamic light scattering measurements. Results showed that SDS and DPC are synergic and can be used together to prepare mixed micelles with different negative/zwitterionic surfactants molar ratio. The properties of anionic-rich and cationic-rich mixtures of CTAB (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) and SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate) were investigated with conductometry and surface tension measurements and by determining the surfactant NMR self-diffusion coefficients. The critical aggregate concentration (CAC), surface tension reduction effectiveness(gamma(CAC)), surface excess(Gamma(max)), and mean molecular surface area (A(min)) were determined from plots of the surface tension (gamma) as a function of the total surfactant concentration. The compositions of the adsorbed films (Z) and aggregates (chi) were estimated by using regular solution theory, and then the interaction parameters in the aggregates (beta) and the adsorbed film phases (beta(sigma)) were calculated. The results showed that the synergism between the surfactants enhances the formation of mixed aggregates and reduces the surface tension. Further, the nature and strength of the interaction between the surfactants in the mixtures were obtained by calculating the values of the following parameters: the interaction parameter, beta, the size parameter, rho, and the nonrandom mixing parameter, P*. These results indicate that in ionic surfactant mixtures the optimized packing parameter has the highest value and that the size parameter can be used to account for deviations from the predictions of regular solution theory. It was concluded that, for planar air/aqueous interfaces and aggregation systems, this nonideality increases as the temperature increases. This trend is attributed to the increased dehydration of the surfactant head groups that results from increases in temperature. Further, our conductometry measurements show that the counterion binding number of mixed micelles formed in mixtures with a high CTAB content is different to those with a high SDS content. This difference is due to either their different aggregation sizes or the different interactions between the head groups and the counterions.  相似文献

(1)H NMR chemical shift, spin-lattice relaxation time, spin-spin relaxation time, self-diffusion coefficient, and two-dimensional nuclear Overhauser enhancement (2D NOESY) measurements have been used to study the nonionic-ionic surfactant mixed micelles. Cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were used as the ionic surfactants and polyethylene glycol (23) lauryl ether (Brij-35) as the nonionic surfactant. The two systems are both with varying molar ratios of CTAB/Brij-35 (C/B) and SDS/Brij-35 (S/B) ranging from 0.5 to 2, respectively, at a constant concentration of 6 mM for Brij-35 in aqueous solutions. Results give information about the relative arrangement of the surfactant molecules in the mixed micelles. In the former system, the trimethyl groups attached to the polar heads of the CTAB molecules are located between the first oxy-ethylene groups next to the hydrophobic chains of Brij-35 molecules. These oxy-ethylene groups gradually move outward from the hydrophobic core of the mixed micelle with an increase in C/B in the mixed solution. In contrast to the case of the CTAB/Triton X-100 system, the long flexible hydrophilic poly oxy-ethylene chains, which are in the exterior part of the mixed micelles, remain coiled, but looser, surrounding the hydrophobic core. There is almost no variation in conformation of the hydrophilic chains of Brij-35 molecules in the mixed micelles of the SDS/Brij-35 system as the S/B increases. The hydrophobic chains of both CTAB and SDS are co-aggregated with Brij-35, respectively, in their mixed micellar cores.  相似文献

The effects of sodium barbital (SB) on the solubility of different kinds of surfactants viz., CTAB (cationic head group), SDS (anionic head group) and Triton X‐100 (non ionic head group) in solution phase as well as their first and second critical micelle concentrations (CMC1 and CMC2), the change in Kraft temperatures (TK) and cloud points (CP) have been studied. Furthermore, the article reports SB‐surfactant interaction study, which is application oriented and highlights the underlying physico‐chemical aspects of the system through florescence and conductivity measurements. The results show that the solubility of CTAB and Triton X‐100 increases with the addition of SB, and that of SDS increases in the presence of small amounts of SB and decreases in the presence of large amounts of SB. With the increasing SB concentration, the CMC of CTAB and CMC1 of Triton X‐100 both increase, while the CMC of SDS decreases, and the CMC2 of Triton X‐100 has no obvious change. The addition of SB decreases the TK of CTAB sharply, but it increases the TK of SDS and the CP of Triton X‐100. The different effects of SB on the physico‐chemical properties of differently charged surfactants may be related to its different interactions with the surfactants.  相似文献

The critical aggregation concentration (CAC) of four with three kinds of conventional surfactants, namely, two cationic surfactants [hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and tetradecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (TTAB)], one anionic surfactant [sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)], and a nonionic surfactant [Triton X-100 (TX-100)], were determined by variation of 1H chemical shifts with surfactant concentrations. Results show that the CAC values of protons at different positions of the same molecule are different, and those of the terminal methyl protons are the lowest, respectively, which suggests that the terminal groups of the alkyl chains aggregates first during micellization. Measurement of the transverse relaxation time (T2) of different protons in SDS also show that the terminal methyl protons start to decrease with the increase in concentration first, which supports the above mentioned tendency.  相似文献

The critical micellar concentration (cmc) is a fundamental property of surfactant solutions. Many proposed methods for the definition and determination of the cmc from property-concentration plots yield values, which depend on the studied property, on the specific technique used for its analysis and in many cases on the subjective choice of the chosen type of plot and concentration interval. In this focus review, we revise the application of a surfactant concentration model we proposed earlier that defines the cmc directly based on the surfactant concentration. Known equations for the concentration-dependence of different surfactant properties can then be combined with this concentration model and fitted to experimental data. This modular concept makes it possible to determine the cmc and the transition width in a systematic and unambiguous way. We revise its use in the literature in different contexts: the determination of the cmc of surfactants and their mixtures from different properties (electrical conductivity, NMR chemical shift, self-diffusion, surface tension, UV-Vis absorption, fluorescence intensity and fluorescence correlation). We also revise the dependence of the width of the transition region on composition, detailed studies of the properties of fluorescent probes and the aggregation of non-surfactant systems, namely amyloid peptides.  相似文献
