Capillary columns of 0.3–0.35 mm internal diameter and 0.3–7.7 m length, packed with 3 to 30 μm octadecylsilica stationary phases as used for liquid chromatography, were applied to gas chromatographic separation of low boiling hydrocarbons. Van Deemter plots for these columns showed the optimum column efficiency to occur at linear velocities of 4–5 cm/s. A short column was applied to the rapid separation of components of a natural gas and impurities in standard gases, while a long column was applied to the separation of complex mixtures.  相似文献

Summary Glass capillary column chromatography is the most rapidly growing part of gas chromatography. There are many complex new analytical tasks and they require special capillary columns. Fortunately there is a wide range of column preparation methods available, and they make the preparation of glass capillary columns a more varied job than that of packed columns. The combination of narrow-bore capillary gas chromatography with bench-top quadrupole mass spectrometric detection was evaluated for the determination of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The qualitative and quantitative performances of the system are illustrated by several analyses (PCB standards and human milk extracts). Capillary columns with different internal diameters (0.10, 0.18 and 0.22 mm, respectively) were compared for their ability to separate PCB congeners and the analysis time. Short run times (less than 7 min) were sufficient for complete separation of PCB congeners on a 0.10-mm internal diameter (I.D.) capillary column without any loss of resolution when compared with a 0.22 mm I.D. column. Good qualitative and quantitative data acquisition was possible with quadrupole mass spectrometer for run times of 8 min, but incomplete peak reading was observed when run times were reduced to 3-4 min. Selected ion monitoring and dwell times of 10 ms are necessary to obtain detection limits for individual PCB congeners as low as 0.4 pg microl(-1) for standard solutions and 0.2 ng g(-1) fat for milk extracts. By using cold splitless injection, relatively high volumes (1 microl) for narrow-bore capillaries could be injected without any peak distortion.  相似文献

Metal oxide monoliths composed of ZrO2 and HfO2 have been synthesized in situ inside capillary columns. The material shows globular-like structure and through pores. Capillary electrochromatography and capillary liquid chromatography were performed in a monolithic column with the HfO2 material. Separation of a simple sample mixture showed the potential of the new metal oxide monolithic columns.  相似文献

Complex organic mixtures, such as coal liquefaction and oil shale products and by-products, are comprised of hundreds or thousands of individual components. State-of-the-art high resolution gas chromatography does not always provide sufficient resolution to allow accurate quantitation or identification of many compounds of interest. The concept of dual capillary column chromatography combines the different resolving characteristics of two capillary columns coated with different stationary phases into a single chromatographic run. In this approach, both columns are connected to the same injection port. Analysis of complex mixtures in this fashion can confirm the identification and quantitation of components on two columns of different polarity with little increased analysis time, can provide a means of obtaining quantitative data for individual components which are known to coelute on any one column, and can alert one to unknown coelution problems that would be undetected by gas chromatographic analysis on a single capillary column. Simultaneous dual column analysis was applied to three samples, the neutral polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) fraction of a Solvent Refined Coal-II (SRC-II) heavy distillate, the nitrogen-containing polycyclic aromatic compound (N-PAC) fraction of an SRC-II heavy distillate, and the basic fraction from a shale oil process water. Fused silica capillary columns coated with SE-54 and Durawax 3 were used for the analyses of the heavy distillate, while SE-54 an Carbowax 20M capillary columns were used for the analysis of the process water.  相似文献

Capillary columns coated with Carbopack materials, which provide separation by a mixed partition/adsorption mechanism or by adsorption alone, have recently been developed. This paper introducesa novel method for packing Capillary Electrochromatography Columns (CEC). Using vacuum packing methodology, silica particles as small as 1 microm were successfully packed into the capillary columns with 75 microm inner diameter. The columns are verystable and show no noticeable loss in efficiency after 200 sample injections. The performance of these vacuum packed capillary columns was evaluated with a mixture of aromatic and non-aromatic compounds. A 24 cm long capillary column can produce peak efficiencies of around 45,000 plates for benzene.  相似文献

The orthogonality of three columns coupled in two series was studied for the congener specific comprehensive two-dimensional GC separation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). A non-polar capillary column coated with poly(5%-phenyl–95%-methyl)siloxane was used as the first (1D) column in both series. A polar capillary column coated with 70% cyanopropyl-polysilphenylene-siloxane or a capillary column coated with the ionic liquid 1,12-di(tripropylphosphonium)dodecane bis(trifluoromethane-sulfonyl)imide were used as the second (2D) columns. Nine multi-congener standard PCB solutions containing subsets of all native 209 PCBs, a mixture of 209 PCBs as well as Aroclor 1242 and 1260 formulations were used to study the orthogonality of both column series. Retention times of the corresponding PCB congeners on 1D and 2D columns were used to construct retention time dependences (apex plots) for assessing orthogonality of both columns coupled in series. For a visual assessment of the peak density of PCBs congeners on a retention plane, 2D images were compared. The degree of orthogonality of both column series was, along the visual assessment of distribution of PCBs on the retention plane, evaluated also by Pearson's correlation coefficient, which was found by correlation of retention times tR,i,2D and tR,i,1D of corresponding PCB congeners on both column series. It was demonstrated that the apolar + ionic liquid column series is almost orthogonal both for the 2D separation of PCBs present in Aroclor 1242 and 1260 formulations as well as for the separation of all of 209 PCBs. All toxic, dioxin-like PCBs, with the exception of PCB 118 that overlaps with PCB 106, were resolved by the apolar/ionic liquid series while on the apolar/polar column series three toxic PCBs overlapped (105 + 127, 81 + 148 and 118 + 106).  相似文献

An injector designed for automatic direct liquid injection into narrow bore capillary GC columns has been constructed and evaluated. The tip of the syringe needle is aligned with, and positioned close to, the column entrance in a small, pressurized cavity: when the sample is dispensed it is immediately forced into the column by the action of the surrounding carrier gas. A standard autosampler equipped with a standard stainless steel syringe needle was utilized for at-column sample transfer into 100 μm i.d. columns. RSD values for n-alkanes were between 0.1 and 0.3% for relative area counts and approximately 1% for absolute area counts.  相似文献

For clinical and environmental analyses utilizing capillary gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), increased sensitivity and speed of analysis are highly desirable. These performance advantages are realized using a WCOT column of 100 μm i.d. as compared to the more conventional 200 μm i.d. capillary columns. The improved sensitivity of capillary direct GC/MS with the 100 μm i.d. column for the confirmation of drugs of abuse will be demonstrated. For environmental analysis, the superior efficiency and resolution of the 100 μm i.d. column can be employed for the separation of priority pollutants. This approach is more amenable to capillary direct GC/MS providing a more effective interface to the mass spectrometer. As a result improved sensitivity and a considerable decrease in analysis time is achieved over that obtained with the larger diameter environmental specialty phase columns.  相似文献

Complete PCB congener distributions in a panel of Aroclor mixtures were previously obtained by combining data from several HRGC systems. In that study quantitation of minor components may have been unreliable due to single level calibration against high levels of individual congener standards. Two lots of Aroclor 1254 had markedly different congener distributions. In this study, the design and performance of a congener-specific PCB analysis method employing GC-MS-SIM detection of congeners separated on a DB-XLB capillary column are discussed. Quantitation is carried out against a 6-level inclusive standard curve of a mixture of 144 congeners found in Aroclors. A separate procedure to measure trace levels of PCB 126 in Aroclors using the same system, combined with levels initially acquired for other congeners, facilitates estimation of TEQ values (Toxic Equivalencies of the PCB mixtures to 2,3,7,8-TCDD). PCB congener profiles of 15 Aroclor 1254 mixtures are presented. These profiles show that the less common, high TEQ variety of Aroclor 1254 was manufactured by an atypical, two-stage chlorination process that was apparently used during the final 1% of Aroclor 1254 production (ca. 1974–1976).  相似文献

Monolithic capillary columns were prepared via electron beam triggered free radical polymerization within the confines of 0.2 and 0.1mm I.D. capillary columns using ethyl methacrylate and trimethylolpropane triacrylate as monomers as well as 2-propanol, 1-dodecanol and toluene as porogenic system. The influence of column diameter on reproducibility and separation performance was investigated. For evaluation, a protein standard consisting of five proteins in the range of 5800-66,000 g mol(-1) was used. Reproducibility was checked by determining the relative standard deviations in retention times, peak widths at half height, asymmetry and resolution. Excellent run-to-run reproducibility was found for both 0.2 and 0.1mm I.D. columns; batch-to-batch reproducibility was good for both column types. In order to enhance the non-polar character of the monolithic columns, lauryl methacrylate-based capillary columns were prepared. These were successfully used for the separation of proteins and a cytochrome c digest.  相似文献

Supercritical-fluid chromatography (SFC) may be performed either in open (capillary) columns or in packed columns. Both approaches have been demonstrated numerous times in the literature. In this contribution it will be attempted to discuss some aspects of columns for SFC. Some advantages of both types of columns will be identified. Attention is paid to the stationary phase film thickness, the speed of analysis, and to the maximum number of theoretical plates (effect of column pressure drop). In this brief contribution many questions will be left unanswered and many significant aspects will be left undiscussed, illustrating that much research remains to be done in this area.  相似文献

In this paper capillary electrochromatography of alkali and alkaline-earth metal cations in open tubular capillary columns is described. Capillary columns are prepared by coating fused silica capillaries of 75 microm I.D. with poly(butadiene-maleic acid) copolymer (PBMA) in multiple layers. Thermally initiated radical polymerization is used to crosslink the stationary phase. Capillary columns with different number of stationary phase layers can be prepared and allow for the adjustment of separation selectivity in the electrochromatographic mode. Fast and sensitive separations of common inorganic cations are achieved in less than 6 min in a 60 cm capillary column with on-column capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detector. Limits of detection (S/N=3) for the determination of alkali and alkaline-earth metal cations range from 0.3 to 2.5 microM and repeatability is better than 0.5, 4.5 and 6.1% for migration times, peak heights and peak areas, respectively.  相似文献

The performance of a type of micropacked column for the quantitative SFC analysis of samples containing solutes at very different concentrations has been studied. The chromatographic characteristics of the column were compatible with high sample volume loadability, and at the same time adequate efficiency and low pressure drop. In order to increase both the separating power and sample capacity of the column, the percentage liquid phase loading was optimized. The accuracy, precision, and detection limit obtainable with the micropacked column are compared with the performance of a wall coated open tubular capillary column having the same phase ratio.  相似文献

The congener-specific analysis of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) by high resolution gas chromatography on a 50 m × 0.25 mm fused silica column coated with a 0.26 μm film of 5% diphenyl polydimethylsiloxane (CPSil-8) has been significantly improved by series coupling with a 25 m × 0.22 mm column coated with a 0.10 μm film of 1,2-dicarba-closo-dodecarborane polydimethylsiloxane (HT-5). Using helium as carrier gas, a total of 64 congeners in technical PCB mixtures could be analyzed as resolved peaks by ECD (86 by MS) with the CPSil-8 column, and 84 by ECD (108 by MS) with the combination. The high upper temperature limit for these stationary phases (>300°C) enabled fast temperature programming and rapid analysis (60 min).  相似文献

The method uses a microbore C-18 column and an open tubular capillary column coated with SE-52 and carbon dioxide as the supercritical fluid. The gas chromatographic use of flexible thin walled soft glass capillary columns coated with non-polar stationary phases is compared to similar columns made of fused silica glass. With non-polar soft glass columns, the use of surface roughening viagaseous HCI followed by a Carbowax 20 M pretreatment gave adsorptive phenomena, and thermal instability. With very polar soft glass columns where a variety of cyanopropyl silicone phases were coated directly onto the NaCI crystal matrix, adsorptive effects were again prominent and frequent break-down in film stability with time, was also observed. These undesirable effects were due to the presence of metal oxides in the soft glass. Attempts to remove these materials from the thin walled soft glass surface by means of acid leaching produced significant brittleness. This deleterious result was further increased by attempts at high temperature silylation or polysiloxane deactivation. In sharp contrast, the fused silica surface was essentially free of metal oxides and the surface silanol groups are easily neutralized by silylation or polysiloxane deactivation techniques. No brittleness was observed following these procedures. An increasing series of high molecular weight, viscous, polymeric vinyl containing non-polar and highly polar stationary phases have been produced which readily wet the surface of the fused silica and are easily crosslinked in the presence of free radical generators. These columns are essentially free of all the problems noted with flexible thin walled soft glass. When all of the parameters involved in the fabrication of a glass capillary column are assessed, it appears at this time, that the flexible fused silica glass column with cross linked phases approaches the “ideal” capillary column.  相似文献

Summary Fused silica is by far the best material for most kinds of GC capillary columns but in some particular conditions, when a drastic or alkaline treatment is required, this material and especially the polyimide protector layer do not possess high chemical resistance and could easily break down. In order to overcome this disadvantage, in this paper, we present a new type of column — a quartz-lined aluminum capillary coated with graphitized carbon black modified by liquid phases by using a new coating procedure. With the above material a capillary column for amine analysis, and another for the analysis of VOCs and oil products are obtained. Summary A technique is described for determination of the amount of bonded phase in commercial columns. It is adapted to the determination of the real nature and the thickness of a siloxane bonded film. Ten-centimeter samples of column are used. The method is tested for large-bore capillary columns.
