Poly(arylene ether sulfone) copolymers derived from 9,9-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)fluorene, bisphenol S and 4,4′-difluorodiphenylsulfone and poly(arylene ether ketone) copolymers derived from 4-phenoxybiphenyl, diphenyl ether and isophthaloyl chloride were prepared as precursor polymers for sulfonation reaction in which sulfonic groups are introduced quantitatively into specified positions. Sulfonation reaction for these two series of copolymers by concentrated sulfuric acid was successfully carried out to give sulfonated polymers with controlled positions and degree of sulfonation. Thermal stability, moisture absorption and proton conductivity for these two series of copolymers were measured and the results were compared to those of perfluorosulfonic acid polymers.  相似文献

The reaction of terephthalic acid (TA) and para-phenylenediamine sulfate (PPD-S) in sulfur trioxide to form anisotropic, sulfonated poly(p-phenyleneterephthalamide) (SPT) dopes was reported in Part IV of this series. We have found now that the TA/PPD-S polymerization is only one example of a more general polyamide condensation reaction of aromatic diamines and aromatic diacids. Sulfonation of the aromatic diamine ring during TA/PPD-S polymerization in SO3 was a major side reaction. Sulfonation was reduced or eliminated by aromatic diamine ring substitution with unreactive substituents, particularly chlorine and fluorine. Polymerization of 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-phenylenediamine with TA in SO3 at 80°C (18% concentration) produced unsulfonated poly(tetrafluoro-para-phenyleneterephthalamide) (F-PPT) with an inherent viscosity of 2.2. The halogenated, all-para aromatic polymers formed highly anisotropic (liquid crystalline) dopes. Monomers that formed polymers in which the chain bond angle deviated from 180° (e.g., meta-oriented monomers) yielded only isotropic polymer solutions. The mechanism and rate of diamine–diacid reactivity in SO3 was related to diamine basicity. Whereas the less basic aromatic diamines (as sulfates) polymerized with aromatic diacids in SO3, the more basic aliphatic diamines (as sulfates) would not. Aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, and aryl-aliphatic diacids were degraded by or reacted with the solvent (SO3). Thermogravimetric analyses of F-PPT and monosulfonated poly(chloro-para-phenyleneterephthalamide) at 20°C/min showed weight loss only above 380 and 370°C, respectively.  相似文献

A new bulky pendent bis(ether anhydride), 1,1‐bis[4‐(4‐dicarboxyphenoxy)phenyl]‐4‐phenylcyclohexane dianhydride, was prepared in three steps, starting from the nitrodisplacement of 1,1‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐4‐phenylcyclohexane with 4‐nitrophthalonitrile to form bis(ether dinitrile), followed by alkaline hydrolysis of the bis(ether dinitrile) and subsequent dehydration of the resulting bis(ether diacid). A series of new poly(ether imide)s were prepared from the bis(ether anhydride) with various diamines by a conventional two‐stage synthesis including polyaddition and subsequent chemical cyclodehydration. The resulting poly(ether imide)s had inherent viscosities of 0.50–0.73 dL g?1. The gel permeation chromatography measurements revealed that the polymers had number‐average and weight‐average molecular weights of up to 57,000 and 130,000, respectively. All the polymers showed typical amorphous diffraction patterns. All of the poly(ether imide)s showed excellent solubility in comparison with the other polyimides derived from adamantane, norbornane, cyclododecane, and methanohexahydroindane and were readily dissolved in various solvents such as N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone, N,N‐dimethylacetamide (DMAc), N,N‐dimethylformamide, pyridine, cyclohexanone, tetrahydrofuran, and even chloroform. These polymers had glass‐transition temperatures of 226–255 °C. Most of the polymers could be dissolved in chloroform in as high as a 30 wt % concentration. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that all polymers were stable up to 450 °C, with 10% weight losses recorded from 458 to 497 °C in nitrogen. These transparent, tough, and flexible polymer films could be obtained by solution casting from DMAc solutions. These polymer films had tensile strengths of 79–103 MPa and tensile moduli of 1.5–2.1 GPa. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 2066–2074, 2002  相似文献

The synthesis and polymerization of a series of perhaloalkyl allyl and vinyl ethers derived from perhaloketones is described. Data on the critical surface tension of wetting (γc) for high molecular weight polymers of heptafluoroisopropyl vinyl ether and low molecular weight poly(heptafluoroisopropyl allyl ether) is also presented. Preparation of the allyl ethers is a one-step, high-yield displacement reaction between the potassium fluoride–perhaloacetone adduct and an allyl halide, such as allyl bromide. The vinyl ethersare prepared by a two-step process which involves displacement of halide from a 1,2-dihaloethane with a KF–perhaloacetone adduct and dehydrohalogenation of the 1-halo-2-perhaloalkoxyethane to a vinyl ether. Low molecular weight polymers were obtained with heptafluoroisopropyl allyl ether by using a high concentration of a free-radical initiator. The low molecular weight poly(heptafluoroisopropyl allyl ether) had a γc of 21 dyne/cm. No polymer was obtained with tributylborane–oxygen or with VCl3–AIR3, with gamma radiation, or by exposure to ultraviolet light. High molecular weight polymers were obtained from heptafluoroisopropyl vinyl either by using either lauryl peroxide or ultraviolet light but not by exposure to BF3–etherate. The γc for poly(heptafluoroisopropyl vinyl ether) ranged from 14.2 to 14.6 dyne/cm., and the significance of this value is discussed in relation to the γc for poly(heptafluoroisopropyl acrylate).  相似文献

Two kinds of new aromatic poly(arylene ether)s containing sulfonic acid groups were synthesized. Polymer 1 composed of tetraphenylphenylene ether and perfluorobiphenylene units was sulfonated with chlorosulfonic acid. Sulfonation took place only at the para position of the pendant phenyl rings. The average degree of sulfonation per repeating unit (m) was controlled from 1 to 4. Sulfonated polymer 2 with m = 3 was soluble in methanol and dimethyl sulfoxide and swelled in water. Incorporating bis(3,5‐dimethylphenyl)sulfone moieties into the sulfonated polymer imparts less methanol affinity. Polymers 4 with 30–65 mol % tetrakis(sulfophenyl)phenylene ether units has high decomposition temperatures above 300 °C, hydrophilicity, and good hydrolytic stability. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Aromatic polymers containing formamidine groups in the polymer backbone were obtained from aromatic diamines in high yields with α,α-dichloromethyl ether and triethylorthoformate. The latter was the reagent of choice. Soluble, high-molecular-weight products were obtained with m-phenylene diamine and 4,4′ bis(aminophenyl)methane. These polymers were characterized by viscosity, microanalysis, and nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy. Generally, insoluble products were obtained from p-phenylene diamine and 2,6-diaminotoluene, although small amounts of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO)-soluble fractions could be extracted and examined by NMR spectroscopy. IR analysis of the insoluble fractions confirmed formation of polymers with the formamidine-containing structures. The synthetic procedures developed here make readily available this new class of aromatic polymers.  相似文献

A new bis(ether anhydride), 3,3′,5,5′‐tetramethyl‐2,2‐bis[4‐(4‐dicarboxyphenoxy)phenyl]propane dianhydride ( 3 ), was prepared in three steps: the nitro displacement of 4‐nitrophthalonitrile with 2,2‐bis(4‐hydroxy‐3,5‐dimethylphenyl)propane, the alkaline hydrolysis of the intermediate bis(ether dinitrile), and the subsequent dehydration of the resulting bis(ether diacid). A series of new highly soluble poly(ether imide)s with tetramethyl and isopropylidene groups were prepared from the bis(ether anhydride) 3 with various diamines by a conventional two‐stage synthesis including polyaddition and chemical cyclodehydration. The resulting poly(ether imide)s had inherent viscosities of 0.54–0.73 dL g?1. Gel permeation chromatography measurements revealed that the polymers had number‐average and weight‐average molecular weights of up to 54,000 and 124,000, respectively. All the polymers showed typical amorphous diffraction patterns. All of the poly(ether imide)s showed excellent solubility and were readily dissolved in various solvents such as N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone, N,N‐dimethylacetamide, N,N‐dimethylformamide, pyridine, cyclohexanone, tetrahydrofuran, and even chloroform. Most of the polymers could be dissolved with chloroform concentrations as high as 30 wt %. These polymers had glass‐transition temperatures of 244–282 °C. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that all polymers were stable, with 10% weight losses recorded above 463 °C in nitrogen. These polymer films had tensile strengths of 81–102 MPa and tensile moduli of 1.8–2.0 GPa. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 2556–2563, 2002  相似文献

Novel styrene monomers bearing a five or seven‐membered spiroorthoester structure (SOE5, SOE7) were synthesized and their radical polymerizations as well as volume change during crosslinking of the obtained polymers were investigated. SOE5 and SOE7 were prepared from 4‐vinylbenzyl glycidyl ether and γ‐butyrolactone or ε‐caprolactone using boron trifluoride diethyl ether complex as a catalyst, respectively. Radical polymerizations of these monomers using 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) gave the corresponding styrene‐based polymers with keeping the spiroorthoester structures unchanged. These polymers could be transformed to networked polymers by heating with a sulfonium antimonate, a thermally latent cationic polymerization initiator. Copolymerization of SOE5 or SOE7 with styrene at various compositions was carried out to efficiently obtain the corresponding copolymers, respectively. These polymers and copolymers showed little volume shrinkage or slight volume expansion during the crosslinking. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Two sulfonyl group-containing bis(ether anhydride)s, 4,4′-[sulfonylbis(1,4-phenylene)dioxy]diphthalic anhydride ( IV ) and 4,4′-[sulfonylbis(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)dioxy]diphthalic anhydride (Me- IV ), were prepared in three steps starting from the nucleophilic nitrodisplacement reaction of the bisphenolate ions of 4,4′-sulfonyldiphenol and 4,4′-sulfonylbis(2,6-dimethylphenol) with 4-nitrophthalonitrile in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). High-molar-mass aromatic poly(ether sulfone imide)s were synthesized via a conventional two-stage procedure from the bis(ether anhydride)s and various aromatic diamines. The inherent viscosities of the intermediate poly(ether sulfone amic acid)s were in the ranges of 0.30–0.47 dL/g for those from IV and 0.64–1.34 dL/g for those from Me- IV. After thermal imidization, the resulting two series of poly(ether sulfone imide)s had inherent viscosities of 0.25–0.49 and 0.39–1.19 dL/g, respectively. Most of the polyimides showed distinct glass transitions on their differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) curves, and their glass transition temperatures (Tg) were recorded between 223–253 and 252–288°C, respectively. The results of thermogravimetry (TG) revealed that all the poly(ether sulfone imide)s showed no significant weight loss before 400°C. The methyl-substituted polymers showed higher Tg's but lower initial decomposition temperatures and less solubility compared to the corresponding unsubstituted polymers. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A novel class of semifluorinated perfluorocyclohexenyl (PFCH) aryl ether homo/copolymers was successfully synthesized with high yield through the step‐growth polymerization of commercially available bisphenols and decafluorocyclohexene in the presence of a triethylamine base. The synthesized polymers exhibit variable thermal properties depending on the functional spacer group (R). PFCH aryl ether copolymers with random and alternating architectures were also prepared from versatile bis‐perfluorocyclohexenyl aryl ether monomers. The PFCH polymers show high thermal stabilities with a 5% decomposition temperature ranging from 359 to 444 °C in air and nitrogen atmosphere. These semifluorinated PFCH aromatic ether polymers contain intact enchained PFCH olefin moieties, making further reactions such as crosslinking and application specific functionalization possible. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The grafting of polystyryl lithium onto poly(chloroethyl vinyl ether) chains has been investigated. The reaction proceeds cleanly and quantitatively thus allowing the synthesis of comblike polymers. Since the dimensions of the polystyrene branches and of the poly(chloroethyl vinyl ether) backbone can be controlled by living polymerizations, both the length and the number of branches of the graft copolymers can be tuned. The latter behave as star polymers. The possibility to initiate a new cationic polymerization of chloroethyl vinyl ether from polystyrene branches bearing acetal termini in order to prepare the corresponding stars with poly(chloroethyl vinyl ether-b- styrene) branches is also examined. Finally access to hyperbranched polymers of controlled architecture and dimensions by deactivation of a second amount of polystyryl lithium onto the last blocks of poly(chloroethyl vinyl ether) is also reported.  相似文献

Novel poly(arylene ether)s were synthesized from new biphenol monomers 14–16 1 containing imido‐ or dicyanoarylene groups. The syntheses of these polymers were carried out in tetramethylene sulfone in the presence of anhydrous K2CO3, by a nucleophilic substitution condensation between the biphenol and activated difluoro compounds to give high molecular weight polymers. All the polymers have high Tg 's and good thermal stability as determined from DSC and TGA analysis. Inherent viscosities of these polymers are in the range of 0.33–0.63 dL/g. They are amorphous and readily soluble in NMP, DMF, and DMSO. The glass‐transition temperatures of the polymers range from 248–295 °C. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this work we present the results from studies on novel poly(arylene ether ketone)s, including gas permeability, wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Poly(arylene ether ketone)s containing 2,2′- and 3,3′-dibenzoylbiphenyl (DBBP) moieties were characterized to study the effect of biphenyl substitution on gas transport properties. Gas permeabilities of naphthalene-containing poly(arylene ether ketone)s were also measured. Higher permeabilities were observed for polymers prepared with 6F-BPA, compared to 9,9-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)fluorene (HPF). The naphthalene-containing polymers exhibited higher permeabilities than the DBBP polymers, except for a polymer having the 2,2′-DBBP and tetramethylbiphenyl moieties. Based on our work, and results reported in the literature, the 3,3′-DBBP polymers showed the lowest permeabilities for DBBP-containing poly-(arylene ether ketone)s. The low permeabilities are due to more efficiently packed chains brought on by greater flexibility of the backbone, compared to the other polymers studied. DMA studies confirmed the higher barriers to rotation which are believed to be responsible for 2,2′-DBBP polymers having similar selectivities compared to 3,3′-DBBP polymers. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. An unsymmetrical and noncoplanar heterocyclic dianhydride was synthesized from a bisphenol‐like phthalazinone, 4‐(4‐hydroxylphenyl)‐2,3‐phthalazin‐1‐one, and a series of novel poly(ether imide)s based on it, with intrinsic viscosities of 0.67–1.42 dL/g, were obtained by one‐step solution polymerization in m‐cresol at 200 °C for 20 h. The polymers were readily soluble in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone and m‐cresol. The poly(ether imide)s derived from 4,4′‐oxydianiline and 4,4′‐methylenedianiline were also very soluble in chloroform, 1,1′,2,2′‐tetrachloroethane, and N,N‐dimethylacetamide. The glass‐transition temperatures were 289–326 °C, as determined by differential scanning calorimetry. All the degradation temperatures for 5% weight loss occurred above 482 °C in nitrogen. The tensile strength of thin films of some of the polymers varied from 103.1 to 121.4 MPa. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 6089–6097, 2004  相似文献

A new naphthalene unit-containing bis(ether anhydride), 2,6-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)naphthalene dianhydride, was synthesized in three steps starting from the nucleophilic nitrodisplacement reaction of 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene and 4-nitrophthalonitrile in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solution in the presence of potassium carbonate, followed by alkaline hydrolysis of the intermediate bis(ether dinitrile) and subsequent dehydration of the resulting bis(ether diacid). High-molar-mass aromatic poly(ether imide)s were prepared using a conventional two-step polymerization process from the bis(ether anhydride) and various aromatic diamines. The intermediate poly(ether amic acid)s had inherent viscosities of 0.65–2.03 dL/g. The films of poly(ether imide)s derived from two rigid diamines, i.e. p-phenylenediamine and benzidine, crystallized during the thermal imidization process. The other poly(ether imide)s belonged to amorphous materials and could be fabricated into transparent, flexible, and tough films. These aromatic poly(ether imide) films had yield strengths of 104–131 MPa, tensile strengths of 102–153 MPa, elongation to break of 8–87%, and initial moduli of 1.6–3.2 GPa. The glass transition temperatures (Tg's) of poly(ether imide)s were recorded in the range of 220–277°C depending on the nature of the diamine moiety. All polymers were stable up to 500°C, with 10% weight loss being recorded above 550°C in both air and nitrogen atmospheres. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. New polyphthalimidine-forming monomers, 5,5′-(oxydi-p-phenylenedicarbonyl)bis(3-benzylidenephthalide) and the 6,6′-derivative, were synthesized by the Friedel–Crafts reaction of diphenyl ether with 5- and 6-chloroformyl-3-benzylidenephthalide, respectively. The direct polycondensation of these bisphthalides with both aliphatic and aromatic diamines in o-phenylphenol at 200–250°C afforded polyphthalimidines having inherent viscosities of 0.2–1.2 dL/g in almost quantitative yields. Syntheses of aliphatic polyphthalimidines with higher inherent viscosities were also achieved by a two-step procedure involving ring-opening polyaddition and subsequent thermal cyclodehydration. All the polymers were amorphous and readily soluble in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), m-cresol, nitrobenzene, pyridine, and chloroform. Tough and flexible films could be cast from NMP solutions of the polymers. Glass transition temperatures of the polyphthalimidines were in the range of 158–246°C. The thermogravimetry of the aromatic polymers showed 10% weight loss in air and nitrogen at 445–515 and 500–520°C, respectively. The crosslinking reaction of some benzylidenependant polyphthalimidines took place at 300°C through double-bond addition to afford cured polymers with improved thermal stability.  相似文献

The effect of polymerization temperature and solvents was determined on the crystallinity of polymers of vinyl isobutyl ether and of vinyl n-butyl ether prepared with aluminum sulfate–sulfuric acid complex catalyst. Principally, the methyl ethyl ketone (MEK)-insoluble fractions of these polymers were used for characterization. Density, per cent crystallinity by x-ray diffraction, infrared ratio, and dilatometric volume contraction of these polymer fractions were used as criteria of crystallinity. The MEK-insoluble fractions of poly(vinyl n-butyl ethers) prepared in carbon disulfide in the temperature range of ?30 to +25°C did not show any significant difference in the values of the above crystallinity parameters. The polymer obtained at 50°C. was less crystalline than the rest of the polymers. The MEK-insoluble fractions of poly(vinyl isobutyl ethers) prepared at 0–50°C. in carbon disulfide and n-heptane solvents also did not significantly differ in their degree of crystallinity. They were, however, decidedly less crystalline than the MEK-insoluble fractions of the corresponding polymers obtained at ?20°C. These data a indicate that on increasing the temperature of polymerization the crystallinity of the polymers was either unchanged or decreased slightly. The polymerizations of vinyl n-butyl ether and vinyl isobutyl ethers were also carried out in binary mixtures of carbon disulfide with n-heptane, chlorobenzene, and MEK. Generally, increasing the concentration of carbon disulfide increased the inherent viscosities of polymers as well as the weight percentage of their MEK-insoluble fractions. The MEK-insoluble fraction of poly(vinyl isobutyl ether) prepared in carbon disulfide-MEK mixture (volume ratio 2:1) was isotactic and highly crystalline. Likewise, the MEK-insoluble fractions of two polymers of vinyl n-butyl ether prepared in MEK itself were also isotactic and highly crystalline. Compared to poly(tetramethylene oxide), these latter fractions exhibited less dependence of rate of crystallization upon temperature. Consequently, at low degrees of supercooling they crystallize much more rapidly than does poly(tetramethylene oxide).  相似文献

Solution polymerizations of allyl(o-vinyl phenyl)ether and allyl(p-vinyl phenyl)ether with cationic and radical initiators were investigated. Soluble polymers were formed in polymerizations with boron trifluoride etherate and with benzoyl peroxide. In polymerization with azobisisobutyronitrile the polymerization in dilute solution gave a soluble polymer, whereas that in concentrated solution gave a crosslinked, insoluble one. For informationon the polymerization behavior some infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopic investigations of the soluble polymers were made. From these results it appears that polymers with pendant allyl groups are formed in polymerization with boron trifluoride etherate at low temperature, and polymers containing pendant vinyl groups and allyl groups are obtained with the two types of radical initiator. Copolymerizations of these monomers with ethyl vinyl ether and styrene with the use of boron trifluoride etherate were sucessfully effected. Such reactions as Claisen rearrangement, crosslinking induced with radical initiators, and epoxidation with perbenzoic acid were examined for the polymers prepared in the polymerization with boron trifluoride etherate. Good results were obtained for the former two reactions. However, the latter was unsuccessful.  相似文献

Macrocyclic polyether or crown ether ester derivatives of acrylic and methacrylic acid were synthesized and polymerized. The cation binding properties of the polymers determined by extraction of picrate salts were similar to those obtained for poly(crown ether)s derived from styrene. In the presence of a crown-complexable cation both polymers form insoluble polysalt complexes with sodium carboxymethylcellulose, potassium poly(styrene sulfonate), and potassium polyacrylate. The extent of precipitation depends on the type and concentration of cation as well as on the ratio polyanion to poly(crown ether). The precipitate appears to have an equal number of positive and negative charges. An insoluble hydrogen-bonded complex is formed in the absence of salt when poly(vinylbenzo-18-crown-6) and poly(acrylic acid) are mixed in 0.01M HCl. Organic solutes bound to the poly(crown ether)s, which occur in an aqueous mixture of poly(vinylbenzo-18-crown-6) and picrate anions, are precipitated with the poly(crown ether) when the polysalt complex is formed.  相似文献

A new cardo diamine monomer 3, 3‐bis‐[4‐{2′trifluoromethyl 4′‐(4″‐aminophenyl) phenoxy} phenyl]‐2‐phenyl‐2, 3‐dihydro‐isoindole‐1‐one ( 4 ) has been synthesized from potentially cheap phenolphthalein as the starting material. This diamine was used for the synthesis of a new poly(ether amide) and two co‐poly(ether amide)s using 4, 4′‐diaminodiphenyl ether (ODA) as co‐monomer by direct solution polycondensation with 5‐t‐butyl iso‐phthalic acid. These new polymers showed inherent viscosities of 0.48–0.62 dL g?1. The resulting poly(ether amide) and co‐poly(ether amide)s were readily soluble in polar aprotic solvents like NMP, DMF, DMAc, DMSO, and pyridine. The polymers have been fully characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, FTIR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. These polymers showed glass transition temperatures in the range of 267–310°C. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated high thermal stability of these polymers at 5 and 10% weight loss temperature in air above 357°C and 419°C, respectively. The poly(ether amide) films cast from DMAc were flexible with tensile strength up to 91 MPa, elongations at break up to 11%, and modulus of elasticity up to 1.82 GPa. X‐ray diffraction measurements indicate the amorphous nature of the poly(ether amide)s. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
