The concurrence of stable and unstable stratification in stratified flows leads to dramatically different features of turbulent mixing. This unique flow is experimentally studied by introducing a horizontal jet of dense fluid into a pool of light fluid. The buoyancy flux from simultaneous velocity–density measurements is an indicator for competition between a stabilising mechanism and another destabilising mechanism. The difference of mixing efficiency, quantified by flux Richardson number Rif, between the (un)stable stratification is mainly contributed by the large-scale mixing. The behaviour of Rif can be modelled by the gradient Richardson number Rig linearly in the low-Ri case and nonlinearly in the high-Ri case (especially in a region where the counter-gradient flux emerges). The turbulent diapycnal diffusivity, quantifying the combined effect of reversible and irreversible mixing processes, increases as the buoyancy Reynolds number Reb increases only when Reb is large. The irreversible mixing diffusivity, which quantifies the sole irreversible mixing process, increases linearly as the turbulent Péclet number with the data points from the (un)stable stratification overlapped. The turbulent Prandtl number approaches 0.75 as Rig approaches zero, but does not show clear dependence on Rig in the examined regime.  相似文献

The subgrid-scale dynamics of stratified flows is studied in a horizontally introduced turbulent jet with coexistence of stable and unstable stratification of a low Richardson number case and a high Richardson number case. The positive production of subgrid-scale kinetic energy and the production of scalar variance suggest the forward energy cascade. The subgrid-scale buoyant destruction plays a role as a sink of subgrid-scale kinetic energy in the stable stratification while holds a role of turbulent generation in the unstable stratification. The role-switch of buoyant destruction in the stable stratification of high-Ri case implies the occurrence of a destabilising process triggered by the coupled instability mechanisms. The energy balance assumption related to the production of and the dissipation of subgrid-scale kinetic energy as well as the subgrid-scale buoyant destruction may fail. The a-priori test suggests the scale-invariant dynamic and standard Smagorinsky models not to work properly here, while the scale-dependent dynamic model gives a decent performance but with restrictions of the ratio between two testing filter scales.  相似文献

Abstract

This article presents an experimental study of the local heat transfer on the rotor surface in a discoidal rotor-stator system air-gap in which an air jet comes through the stator and impinges the rotor. To determine the surface temperatures, measurements were taken on the rotor, using an experimental technique based on infrared thermography. A thermal balance was used to identify the local convective heat transfer coefficient. The influence of the axial Reynolds number Re j and the rotational Reynolds number Re was measured and compared with the data available in the literature. Local convective heat transfer coefficients were obtained for a dimensionless space between the two disks G = 0.01, for Re j between 0 and 41,666, and for Re between 20,000 and 516,000. The flow data found in the literature can be used to explain the heat transfers in this small space configuration. In fact, the rotating disk can be divided into two influence zones: one dominated by the air jet near the center of the rotor and one affected by both the air jet and rotation. Heat transfers with non zero impinging jets appear to be continuously improved compared to those with no jets, even if the two influence zones mentioned previously are situated differently.  相似文献

The laminar boundary layer separation flow over a two-dimensional bump controlled by synthetic jets is experimentally investigated in a water channel with hydrogen-bubble visualisation and particle image velocimetry (PIV) techniques. The two-dimensional synthetic jet is applied near the separation point. Two Reynolds numbers (Re = 700 and 1120) based on the bump height and free-stream velocity are adopted in this experiment, and seven different excitation frequencies at each Reynolds number are considered, focusing on the separation control as well as the vortex dynamics. The experimental results show that the optimal control can only be achieved within some excitation frequencies at both Reynolds numbers. However, beyond this range, further increasing the excitation frequency leads to an increase in the separation region. The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) technique and vortex identification by swirling strength (Λci) are applied for the deeper analysis of the separated flow. The reconstructed Λci field by the first four POD modes is used and vortex lock-on phenomenon is observed. It is found that the negative synthetic jet vortex with clockwise rotation draws the separated wake shear layer as it is convected downstream, and then they syncretise together. Thus, the new vortex is induced and shedding downstream periodically.  相似文献

This paper assesses the suitability of the inflow Reynolds number defined by ReoUoD/ν (here Uo and D are respectively the initial jet velocity and diameter while ν is kinematic viscosity) for a round air/air jet. Specifically an experimental investigation is performed for the influences of Uo, D and Reo on the mean-velocity decay and spread coefficients (Ku, Kr) in the far field of a circular air jet into air from a smoothly contracting nozzle. Present measurements agree well with those previously obtained under similar inflow conditions. The relations KuUo and Kr ∝ 1/Uo for Uo < 5 m/s appear to work, while each coefficient approaches asymptotically to a constant for Uo > 6 m/s, regardless of the magnitudes of Reo and D. It is revealed that Reo may not be an appropriate dimensionless parameter to characterize the entire flow of a free air/air jet. This paper is the first paper that has challenged the suitability of Reo for turbulent free jets.  相似文献

本文报道热等离子体射流产生及射流特性的实验研究结果。采用同一个直流等离子体发生器,工作气体流量小时产生出层流等离子体长射流,射流长度随气体流量或弧电流的增加而明显增加;工作气体流量大时则产生出湍流等离子体短射流,此时射流长度几乎与工作气体流量或弧电流无关;在层流与湍流等离子体射流工况之间,存在一个流动状况不稳定的过渡区,此时等离子体射流的平均长度随气流量的加大而减小,但随弧电流的加大而明显加大。层流等离子体长射流有相当好的刚性。  相似文献

The gasdynamic parameters of nonsteady expansion of He, Ar, N2, and SiH4 from a sonic nozzle into a space with reduced background gas pressure were experimentally studied for moderate values of n (103–106) and the Reynolds number (ReL∼100–102). The jet set times necessary for the formation of pulsed jets of a given finite duration are determined. The results are generalized in terms of dimensionless similarity parameters. The laws of motion of the leading and trailing fronts in pulsed jets of various gases are established. The leading front of a pulsed jet propagates at a velocity significantly smaller than the limiting steady value. The jet expansion dynamics is determined by the ratio of the momentum of the expanding gas to that of the background gas displaced from the flow region. The length of the steady flow region in a pulsed jet monotonically decreases downstream from the source and drops with increasing background gas pressure because of the loss of jet particles in the trailing rarefaction wave; this length increases with the initial momentum because the background gas is more intensively displaced from the flow region.  相似文献

Conditional averaging techniques were used to examine the periodic motions that were observed in flows consisting of an offset planar jet and a co-flowing planar wall jet. The offset jet is one jet height (Hj) away from the wall and has a Reynolds number of approximately 40, 000, based on Hj and flow-rate averaged velocity Uo; for the co-flowing jets, different heights (i.e., 0.18Hj and 0.5Hj) and velocities (i.e., 0.56Uo and 0.36Uo) were considered. The flows had periodic motions with frequencies fHj/Uo = 0.28 and 0.49 or fHc/Uo = 0.23 and 0.25, where Hc is the distance between the jets. The periodic motions were present in both the inner shear layer of the offset jet above the re-circulation region and the outer shear layer of the wall jet below the re-circulation region. The motions from the inner shear layer of the offset jet persisted in the shear layer that formed downstream of the re-circulating region. There were periodic motions in the outer shear layer of the offset jet particularly in the flow with the smaller wall jet. The relative contribution of the motions to the total fluctuations increased as the flow evolved downstream reaching a maximum approximately 4Hc downstream of the flow exit. The relative contribution of the periodic motions to the turbulent fluctuations was similar in the two flows but the periodic motions had a much larger impact on the near-wall velocity and pressure fluctuations in the flow with the smaller wall jet due to the trajectory of the periodic structures, the distance of the periodic structures to the wall and the size of these structures.  相似文献

Large eddy simulations are used to examine the evolution of a shear layer in a thermocline with non-uniform density stratification. Unlike previous studies, the density in the present study is continuously stratified and has stratification in the upper half different from the lower half of the shear layer. The stratification in the upper half is fixed at Ju = 0.05, while the stratification in the lower half is increased to Jd = 0.05, 0.15, 0.25 and 0.35, leading to a progressively stronger asymmetry of the Rig profile in the four cases. Here, J is the bulk Richardson number and Rig is the gradient Richardson number. The type of shear instability and the properties of the ensuing turbulence are found to depend strongly on the degree of asymmetry in stratification. The shear instability changes from a Kelvin–Helmholtz (KH) mode at Jd = 0.05 to a Holmboe (H) mode at Jd = 0.35 and exhibits characteristics of both KH and H modes at intermediate values of Jd. Differences in the evolution among the cases are quantified using density visualisations and statistics such as mean shear, mean stratification and turbulent kinetic energy.  相似文献

The stability and evolution of the shapes of jets of strongly superheated aqueous solutions of ethanol flowing out of a high-pressure chamber are experimentally investigated at various initial parameters. It has been found that a low-boiling liquid causes shifting to lower temperatures of the boundaries between various kinds of boiling-up jets, such as cylindrical, conical, and open. Large-scale pulsations of the jet shapes are observed in the temperature range from 454 to 484 K, where the jet completely breaks down. The conditions for the formation of large-scale low-frequency pulsations with a power spectrum diverging inversely proportional to the frequency f (1/f spectra) have been revealed. Such fluctuations prove that the flow is unstable and large-scale low-frequency ejections are possible.  相似文献

The heat transfer characteristics in a stagnation region were investigated experimentally for five circular free jets impinging into a heated flat plate. The local temperature distributions are estimated from the thermal images obtained from an infrared camera. To get a precise heat transfer data over the plate, fully developed straight pipe jets were used in this study. Mean jet Reynolds number varied from 1,000 to 45,000, jet-to-plate vertical non-dimensional distance H/D varied from 2 to 6, and the spacing distance jet-to-jet S/D varied from 2 to 8. A geometrical arrangement of one jet surrounded by four jets an in-line array was tested. The results show that the stagnation point Nusselt number is correlated to a jet Reynolds number as Nust∝Re0.61. The average Nusselt number is higher at a separation distance of 2D for three cases of spacing distances, S/D = 2, 4, and 6.  相似文献

Abstract  

The near-field structure of strongly buoyant jet issuing from a square nozzle at low Froude and Reynolds numbers is studied by using LIF flow visualization and time-resolved scanning PIV. These experimental techniques allow the visualization of unsteady three-dimensional flow phenomenon occurring in the near-field of strongly buoyant jet. It is found that the buoyant jet is unstable to the positive buoyancy forces, which promote the inflow motion near the nozzle exit. The surrounding low temperature fluid moves into the nozzle inside along the nozzle corner and mixes with the high temperature fluid deep into the nozzle. Then, the flow pattern inside the nozzle becomes highly complex to promote the laminar to turbulent transition of the jet. The statistical flow characteristics of the strongly buoyant jet are evaluated from the scanning PIV measurement, and the result indicates the presence of axisymmetric distributions of mean flow and velocity fluctuations in the circle of diameter equal to the square side of the nozzle.  相似文献

The developing region of a turbulent square jet is investigated using high-resolution particle image velocimetry (PIV). The mean velocity and turbulence stresses are presented in various horizontal planes, along the jet centerline covering the initial region of the jet as well as the transition to the self-similar region. To study the flow structure away from the central plane, velocity measurements in two additional horizontal planes, one located halfway from the jet central plane toward the edge and the other at the edge of the square jet, are also examined. Analysis of the instantaneous velocity fields reveal the presence of an arrow-like feature in the square jet due to the higher instability generated in the jet shear layer compared with a round jet. To elucidate the imprints of the vortex structures present in the jets, a swirling strength-based vortex identification methodology is applied on a large ensemble of instantaneous velocity fields. Statistical analysis of the number of vortex cores, and their size and rotational strength in the measurement plane is undertaken. Vortex population at the edge was found to be very different compared with that in the central plane.  相似文献

Classical large-eddy simulation (LES) modelling assumes that the passive subgrid-scale (SGS) models do not influence large-scale quantities, even though there is now ample evidence of this in many flows. In this work, direct numerical simulation (DNS) and large-eddy simulations of turbulent planar jets at Reynolds number ReH = 6000 including a passive scalar with Schmidt number Sc = 0.7 are used to study the effect of several SGS models on the flow integral quantities e.g. velocity and scalar jet spreading rates. The models analysed are theSmagorinsky, dynamic Smagorinsky, shear-improved Smagorinsky and the Vreman. Detailed analysis of the thin layer bounding the turbulent and non-turbulent regions – the so-called turbulent/non-turbulent interface (TNTI) – shows that this region raises new challenges for classical SGS models. The small scales are far from equilibrium and contain a high fraction of the total kinetic energy and scalar variance, but the situation is worse for the scalar than for the velocity field. Both a-priori and a-posteriori (LES) tests show that the dynamic Smagorinsky and shear-improved models give the best results because they are able to accurately capture the correct statistics of the velocity and passive scalar fluctuations near the TNTI. The results also suggest the existence of a critical resolution Δx, of the order of the Taylor scale λ, which is needed for the scalar field. Coarser passive scalar LES i.e. Δx ≥ λ results in dramatic changes in the integral quantities. This fact is explained by the dynamics of the small scales near the jet interface.  相似文献

The present paper reports the first investigation on a turbulent jet issuing from a diamond orifice(hereafter termed a "diamond jet") with an aspect ratio of 1.7.Velocity measurements were conducted in the transitional region,and the exit Reynolds number of the jet was 50000.For comparison,a round jet with identical normalized boundary conditions was also measured.It is shown that the diamond jet decays and spreads faster than the round jet does over the measured flow region.The axis-switching phenomenon is observed in the diamond jet.Although both jets display primary coherent structures in the near field,these structures are found to break down more rapidly in the diamond jet,due to the higher three-dimensionality of the flow.Moreover,the streamwise components of the Reynolds normal stress and all the shear stresses reach their maxima around the location of the maximal mean shear while the maxima of the lateral components of the Reynolds normal stresses occur around the centreline of the jet.  相似文献

The stability of wall modes in fluid flow through a flexible tube of radius R surrounded by a viscoelastic material in the region R < r < HR is analysed using a combination of asymptotic and numerical methods. The fluid is Newtonian, while the flexible wall is modelled as an incompressible viscoelastic solid. In the limit of high Reynolds number (Re), the vorticity of the wall modes is confined to a region of thickness O(Re -1/3) in the fluid near the wall of the tube. Previous numerical studies on the stability of Hagen-Poiseuille flow in a flexible tube to axisymmetric disturbances have shown that the flow could be unstable in the limit of high Re, while previous high Reynolds number asymptotic analyses have revealed only stable modes. To resolve this discrepancy, the present work re-examines the asymptotic analysis of wall modes in a flexible tube using a new set of scaling assumptions. It is shown that wall modes in Hagen-Poiseuille flow in a flexible tube are indeed unstable in the limit of high Re in the scaling regime Re∼Σ3/4. Here Σ is a nondimensional parameter characterising the elasticity of the wall, and Σ≡ρGR 22, where ρ and η are the density and viscosity of the fluid, and G is the shear modulus of the wall medium. The results from the present asymptotic analysis are in excellent agreement with the previous numerical results. Importantly, the present work shows that the different types of unstable modes at high Reynolds number reported in previous numerical studies are qualitatively the same: they all belong to the class of unstable wall modes predicted in this paper. 采用高速摄像仪对稠密颗粒射流倾斜撞击形成的类液体颗粒膜特征进行实验研究,考察了颗粒粒径、射流速度以及射流含固率等因素对颗粒膜形态及动态特征的影响.结果表明:随着颗粒粒径增大,稠密颗粒倾斜撞击流由颗粒膜向散射模式转变;随着射流速度增加,气固不稳定增强,射流流量出现脉动,正面与侧面分别表现为颗粒膜的非轴对称振荡和表面波纹结构;颗粒膜非轴对称振荡的振荡频率和振荡幅度随射流速度的增大而增大;表面波纹速度和波长沿传播方向增大,波纹间存在叠加现象.颗粒膜出现非轴对称振荡主要是因为喷嘴出口由气固不稳定性引起的射流流量脉动,射流流量脉动频率与撞击面振荡频率基本相当.  相似文献

为了探究超声速边界层流动稳定性及其转捩控制机理,提出基于合成冷/热射流的边界层速度-温度耦合控制方法,并通过数值模拟研究了Ma=4.5超声速平板边界层不稳定波的传播,采用线性稳定性理论中的时间模式分析了壁面吹吸、射流温度、扰动频率、扰动振幅等对不稳定波控制效果的影响.结果表明:无射流控制时,边界层内同时存在不稳定的第一模态扰动波和第二模态扰动波,且二维波形式的第二模态占主导地位;壁面吹吸作用下,仅出现更加不稳定的第二模态,第一模态被抑制;速度-温度耦合控制下,射流温度对扰动模态的不稳定区域大小及扰动增长率影响显著,射流温度与来流温度不同时,温度的脉动使得流动转捩为湍流的速度加快,边界层速度型更加饱满,抗干扰能力增强,流动稳定性提高;高频的吹吸扰动对流场的控制效果优于低频扰动,扰动频率超过400 Hz时,第二模态扰动波时间增长率降低,扰动分量对边界层速度剖面和温度剖面的修正加快,第二模态更加稳定;扰动振幅减小为主流速度的1%时,仅出现时间增长率较小的第二模态,控制效果较好,进一步减小时,第一模态重新出现,并且波数范围与第二模态先重合后分离,对应的时间增长率先增加后减小.研究结果为边界层转捩控制技术提供了新的思路.  相似文献
