An extensive experimental study is carried out to analyze scaling laws for the length of methane oxy-flames stabilized on a coaxial injector. The central methane fuel stream is diluted with N2, CO2 or He. The annular air stream is enriched with oxygen and can be impregnated with swirl. Former studies have shown that the stoichiometric mixing length of relatively short flames is controlled by the mixing process taking place in the vicinity of the injector outlet. This property has been used to derive scaling laws at large values of the stoichiometric mixture fraction. It is shown here that the same relation can be extended to methane oxy-flames characterized by small values of the stoichiometric mixture fraction. Flame lengths are determined with OH* chemiluminescence measurements over more than 1000 combinations of momentum ratio, annular swirl level and composition of the inner and outer streams of the coaxial injector. It is found that the lengths of all the flames investigated without swirl collapse on a single line, whose coefficients correspond to within 15% of flame lengths obtained for fuel and oxidizer streams at much larger stoichiometric mixture fractions. This relation is then extended to the case of swirling flames by including the contribution of the tangential velocity in the flow entrainment rate and is found to well reproduce the mixing degree of the two co-axial streams as long as the flow does not exhibit a vortex breakdown bubble. At higher swirl levels, when the flow features a central recirculation region, the flame length is found to also directly depend on the oxygen enrichment in the oxidizer stream.  相似文献

Whether steady-state gaseous microgravity spherical diffusion exist in the presence of radiation heat loss is an important fundamental question and has important implications for spacecraft fire safety. In this work, experiments aboard the International Space Station and a transient numerical model are used to investigate the existence of steady-state microgravity spherical diffusion flames. Gaseous spherical diffusion flames stabilized on a porous spherical burner are employed in normal (i.e., fuel flowing into an ambient oxidizer) and inverse (i.e., oxidizer flowing into an ambient fuel) flame configurations. The fuel is ethylene and the oxidizer oxygen, both diluted with nitrogen. The flow rate of the reactant gas from the burner is held constant. It is found that steady-state gaseous microgravity spherical diffusion flames can exist in the presence of radiation heat loss, provided that the steady-state flame size is less than the flame size for radiative extinction, and the flame develops fast enough that radiation heat loss does not drop the flame temperature below the critical temperature for radiative extinction (1130 K). A simple model is provided that allows for the identification of initial conditions that can lead to steady-state spherical diffusion flames. In the spherical, infinite domain configuration, the characteristic time for the diffusion-controlled system to effectively reach steady-state is found to be on the order of 100,000 s. Despite a narrow range of attainable conditions, flames that exhibit steady-state behavior are observed aboard the ISS for up to 870 s, even with the constraint of a finite boundary. Steady-state flames are simulated using the numerical model for over 100,000 s.  相似文献

Flame shape is an important observed characteristic of flames that can be used to scale flame properties such as heat release rates and radiation. Flame shape is affected by fuel type, oxygen levels in the oxidiser, inverse burning and gravity. The objective of this study is to understand the effect of high oxygen concentrations, inverse burning, and gravity on the predictions of flame shapes. Flame shapes are obtained from recent analytical models and compared with experimental data for a number of inverse and normal ethane flame configurations with varying oxygen concentrations in the oxidiser and under earth gravity and microgravity conditions. The Roper flame shape model was extended to predict the complete flame shapes of laminar gas jet normal and inverse diffusion flames on round burners. The Spalding model was extended to inverse diffusion flames. The results show that the extended Roper model results in reasonable predictions for all microgravity and earth gravity flames except for enhanced oxygen normal diffusion flames under earth gravity conditions. The results also show trends towards cooler flames in microgravity that are in line with past experimental observations. Some key characteristics of the predicted flame shapes and parameters needed to describe the flame shape using the extended Roper model are discussed.  相似文献

Direct numerical simulations with a C3-chemistry model have been performed to investigate the transient behavior and internal structure of flames propagating in an axisymmetric fuel jet of methane, ethane, ethylene, acetylene, or propane in normal earth gravity (1g) and zero gravity (0g). The fuel issued from a 3-mm-i.d. tube into quasi-quiescent air for a fixed mixing time of 0.3 s before it was ignited along the centerline where the fuel–air mixture was at stoichiometry. The edge of the flame formed a vigorously burning peak reactivity spot, i.e., reaction kernel, and propagated through a flammable mixture layer, leaving behind a trailing diffusion flame. The reaction kernel broadened laterally across the flammable mixture layer and possessed characteristics of premixed flames in the direction of propagation and unique flame structure in the transverse direction. The reaction kernel grew wings on both fuel and air sides to form a triple-flame-like structure, particularly for ethylene and acetylene, whereas for alkanes, the fuel-rich wing tended to merge with the main diffusion flame zone, particularly methane. The topology of edge diffusion flames depend on the properties of fuels, particularly the rich flammability limit, and the mechanistic oxidation pathways. The transit velocity of edge diffusion flames, determined from a time series of calculated temperature field, equaled to the measured laminar flame speed of the stoichiometric fuel–air mixtures, available in the literature, independent of the gravity level.  相似文献

Premixed turbulent flames of methane–air and propane–air stabilized on a bunsen type burner were studied using planar Rayleigh scattering and particle image velocimetry. The fuel–air equivalence ratio range was from lean 0.6 to stoichiometric for methane flames, and from 0.7 to stoichiometric for propane flames. The non-dimensional turbulence rms velocity, u′/SL, covered a range from 3 to 24, corresponding to conditions of corrugated flamelets and thin reaction zones regimes. Flame front thickness increased slightly with increasing non-dimensional turbulence rms velocity in both methane and propane flames, although the flame thickening was more prominent in propane flames. The probability density function of curvature showed a Gaussian-like distribution at all turbulence intensities in both methane and propane flames, at all sections of the flame.The value of the term , the product of molecular diffusivity evaluated at reaction zone conditions and the flame front curvature, has been shown to be smaller than the magnitude of the laminar burning velocity. This finding questions the validity of extending the level set formulation, developed for corrugated flames region, into the thin reaction zone regime by increasing the local flame propagation by adding the term to laminar burning velocity.  相似文献

An improved understanding of cool diffusion flames could lead to improved engines. These flames are investigated here using a spherical porous burner with gaseous fuels in the microgravity environment of the International Space Station. Normal and inverse flames burning ethane, propane, and n-butane were explored with various fuel and oxygen concentrations, pressures, and flow rates. The diagnostics included an intensified video camera, radiometers, and thermocouples. Spherical cool diffusion flames burning gases were observed for the first time. However, these cool flames were not readily produced and were only obtained for normal n-butane flames at 2 bar with an ambient oxygen mole fraction of 0.39. The hot flames that spawned the cool flames were 2.6 times as large. An analytical model is presented that combines previous models for steady droplet burning and the partial-burning regime for cool diffusion flames. The results identify the importance of burner temperature on the behavior of these cool flames. They also indicate that the observed cool flames reside in rich regions near a mixture fraction of 0.53.  相似文献

Systematic experiments with CO2 diluted H2–O2 circular jet diffusion flames have been undertaken to study the formation of cellular flames, which occur for relatively low reactant Lewis numbers and near the extinction limit. The jet Reynolds number for all experiments was about 500, based on the centreline velocity, jet diameter and ambient fuel properties. The Lewis numbers, based on the initial mixture strength φ and ambient conditions of the investigated near-extinction mixtures, vary in the range 1.1–1.3 for oxygen and 0.25–0.29 for hydrogen (φ is defined here as the fuel-to-oxygen molar ratio normalized by the stoichiometric value). Various conditions near the extinction limit were investigated by fixing the fuel composition (H2–CO2 mixture), and systematically lowering the oxygen concentration in the co-flowing oxidizer stream past the point where cellular structures formed, until extinction occurred. The observed different instability states were correlated with the initial mixture strength and the proximity to the extinction limit.

The parameter space for cellularity was found to increase with decreasing initial mixture strength. For a given initial mixture strength, several cellular states were found to co-exist near the extinction limit, and the preferred number of cells (the azimuthal wave number) was observed to decrease with decreasing oxygen concentration (Damköhler number). These trends are consistent with previous theoretical work and our own stability analysis that will be reported elsewhere.  相似文献

This study integrates new and existing numerical modeling and experimental observations to provide a consistent explanation to observations pertaining flame length and soot volume fractions for laminar diffusion flames. Integration has been attempted by means of scaling analysis. Emphasis has been given to boundary layer flames. For the experiments, ethylene is injected through a flat porous burner into an oxidizer flowing parallel to the burner surface. The oxidizer is a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen, flowing at various velocities. All experiments were conducted in microgravity to minimize the role of buoyancy in distorting the aerodynamics of the flames. A previous numerical study emphasizing fuel transport was extended to include the oxidizer flow. Fictitious tracer particles were used to establish the conditions in which fuel and oxidizer interact. This allowed establishing regions of soot formation and oxidation as well as relevant characteristic length and time scales. Adequate scaling parameters then allow to establish explanations that are consistent for different burner configurations as well as “open-tip” and “closed-tip” flames.  相似文献

Previous studies have quantified the fuel–air mixing processes within jet flames having a central fuel jet surrounded by an oxidizer coflow, where the mixing primarily occurs in the far field. The present work instead quantifies mixing within coaxial jet flames having a central jet of oxygen and a surrounding finite thickness coflow of hydrogen. These flames are relatively short and the primary mixing occurs in the near field. The stoichiometric mixing length (LS) was measured, which is the distance along the centerline at which the stoichiometric condition occurs. Values of LS were measured for a wide range of velocity ratios for both reacting and nonreacting cases using Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF). Acetone PLIF was utilized for nonreacting cases, while OH PLIF was used for reacting. In nonreacting cases the use of a nondimensional momentum flux ratio collapses the nonreacting coaxial jet values of LS to a single curve, which confirms previous theory. It also was found that the reacting and nonreacting coaxial jet data collapses approximately to a single curve, if one uses both the nondimensional momentum flux ratio and an effective outer flow gas density which is predicted by the analysis of Tacina and Dahm.  相似文献

A tribrachial (or triple) flame is one kind of edge flame that can be encountered in nonpremixed mixing layers, consisting of a lean and a rich premixed flame wing together with a trailing diffusion flame all extending from a single point. The flame could play an important role on the characteristics of various flame behaviors including lifted flames in jets, flame propagation in two-dimensional mixing layers, and autoignition fronts. The structure of tribrachial flame suggests that the edge is located along the stoichiometric contour in a mixing layer due to the coexistence of all three different types of flames. Since the edge has a premixed nature, it has unique propagation characteristics. In this review, the propagation speed of tribrachial flames will be discussed for flames propagating in mixing layers, including the effects of concentration gradient, velocity gradient, and burnt gas expansion. Based on the tribrachial edge structure observed experimentally in laminar lifted flames in jets, the flame stabilization characteristics including liftoff height, reattachment, and blowout behaviors and their buoyancy-induced instability will be explained. Various effects on liftoff heights in both free and coflow jets including jet velocity, the Schmidt number of fuel, nozzle diameter, partial premixing of air to fuel, and inert dilution to fuel are discussed. Implications of edge flames in the modeling of turbulent nonpremixed flames and the stabilization of turbulent lifted flames in jets are covered.  相似文献

Characteristics of laminar lifted flames of propane highly diluted with nitrogen have been investigated by varying the initial temperature in coflow jets. The result showed that the lifted flame maintained the tribrachial structure up to the initial temperature of 900 K and the liftoff height decreased with initial temperature and dilution ratio. The overall behavior of liftoff heights correlated well with the jet velocity scaled by the stoichiometric laminar burning velocity, emphasizing the importance of the stoichiometric laminar burning velocity on the propagation speed of tribrachial flame. The exponent of the liftoff height with jet velocity in the relation of increased with initial fuel mole fraction, which has been attributed to the differential diffusion between propane and diluent nitrogen. Consequently, nitrogen concentration varied along the stoichiometric contour, which affected the propagation speed. Also, the exponent increased with initial temperature due to the sensitiveness of the propagation speed variation with nitrogen dilution on initial temperature. The liftoff conditions have been observed for the jet velocity even smaller than the stoichiometric laminar burning velocity at relatively low initial temperatures. This can be attributed to the effect of the buoyancy. Liftoff velocities accounting for the relative buoyancy effect were found to have a satisfactory correlation with regardless of initial temperatures and nitrogen dilution.  相似文献

The Eulerian Stochastic Fields (ESF) Monte Carlo method to solve the transported PDF (TPDF) equation is extended to account for differential diffusion effects by incorporating species individual molecular diffusivities. The method has been applied in Large Eddy simulation (LES) to non-piloted oxy-fuel jet flames at different Reynolds numbers experimentally investigated by Sevault et al. [1]. Due to the high H2 content in the fuel stream and CO2 in the oxidizer these flames pose new challenges to combustion modeling as the flame structures are different compared to CH4/air flames. The simulations show very good agreement with the experiments in terms of mixture fraction conditional mean values for temperature and mayor species on the fuel lean side and the reaction zone, deviations on the fuel rich side are discussed. The trend and location of localized extinction is reproduced well in the simulations, as well as differential diffusion effects in the near field. Additionally, it is shown that a neglect of differential diffusion in the combustion model leads to a lifted flame.  相似文献

In microgravity combustion, where buoyancy is not present to accelerate the flow field and strain the flame, radiative extinction is of fundamental importance, and has implications for spacecraft fire safety. In this work, the critical point for radiative extinction is identified for normal and inverse ethylene spherical diffusion flames via atmospheric pressure experiments conducted aboard the International Space Station, as well as with a transient numerical model. The fuel is ethylene with nitrogen diluent, and the oxidizer is an oxygen/nitrogen mixture. The burner is a porous stainless-steel sphere. All experiments are conducted at constant reactant flow rate. For normal flames, the ambient oxygen mole fraction was varied from 0.2 to 0.38, burner supply fuel mole fraction from 0.13 to 1, total mass flow rate, total, from 0.6 to 12.2 mg/s, and adiabatic flame temperature, Tad, from 2000 to 2800 K. For inverse flames, the ambient fuel mole fraction was varied from 0.08 to 0.12, burner supply oxygen mole fraction from 0.4 to 0.85, total from 2.3 to 11.3 mg/s, and Tad from 2080 to 2590 K. Despite this broad range of conditions, all flames extinguish at a critical extinction temperature of 1130 K, and a fuel-based mass flux of 0.2 g/m2-s for normal flames, and an oxygen-based mass flux of 0.68 g/m2-s for inverse flames. With this information, a simple equation is developed to estimate the flame size (i.e., location of peak temperature) at extinction for any atmospheric-pressure ethylene spherical diffusion flame given only the reactant mass flow rate. Flame growth, which ultimately leads to radiative extinction if the critical extinction point is reached, is attributed to the natural development of the diffusion-limited system as it approaches steady state and the reduction in the transport properties as the flame temperature drops due to increasing flame radiation with time (radiation-induced growth.)  相似文献

Many proposed oxy-combustion concepts for carbon capture incorporate the recycling of flue gas which is used as a dilution gas to aid in the control of temperature and heat flux. Improvements in efficiency may be realized by significantly reducing the recycle flue gas (RFG), however, in application, care must be taken to avoid excessive radiant heat flux and gas temperature. One of the features oxy-combustion, unlike air-fired combustion, is that the oxygen and dilution gases are initially separated. RFG can, for example, be strategically blended with either the fuel stream, or oxidizer stream, or both, which affects the stoichiometric mixture fraction, Zst. In this work, the effects of the amount of dilution, or RFG, and Zst on soot fraction are experimentally investigated in a laminar coflow flame. Carbon dioxide is employed as the dilution gas to simulate the recycling of dry flue gas. Soot fraction and temperature are quantitatively determined by a flame image processing technique. In addition, the visible and near-IR emission spectra are given. When dilution, or RFG, is reduced, while holding Zst constant, soot formation and thermal radiation increase due to higher temperature. However, high temperature flames with reduced or zero soot are achieved by increasing Zst via the combination of fuel dilution and oxygen enrichment. This study highlights the inherent flexibility of oxy-fuel combustion, which offers the opportunity to control flame temperature and gas volume while independently controlling soot formation and radiant heat transfer.  相似文献

Most studies of triple flames in counterflowing streams of fuel and oxidizer have been focused on the symmetric problem in which the stoichiometric mixture fraction is 1/2. There then exist lean and rich premixed flames of roughly equal strengths, with a diffusion flame trailing behind from the stoichiometric point at which they meet. In the majority of realistic situations, however, the stoichiometric mixture fraction departs appreciably from unity, typically being quite small. With the objective of clarifying the influences of stoichiometry, attention is focused on one of the simplest possible models, addressed here mainly by numerical integration. When the stoichiometric mixture fraction departs appreciably from 1/2, one of the premixed wings is found to be dominant to such an extent that the diffusion flame and the other premixed flame are very weak by comparison. These curved, partially premixed flames are expected to be relevant in realistic configurations. In addition, a simple kinematic balance is shown to predict the shape of the front and the propagation velocity reasonably well in the limit of low stretch and low curvature.  相似文献

This paper describes the unusual sooting structure of three flames established by the laminar recirculation zones of a centerbody burner. The vertically mounted burner consists of an annular air jet and a central fuel jet separated by a bluff-body. The three ethylene fueled flames are identified as: fully sooting, donut-shape, and ring-shape sooting flames. Different shapes of the soot structures are obtained by varying the N2 dilution in the fuel and air jets while maintaining a constant air and fuel velocity of 1.2 m/s. All three flames have the unusual characteristic that the soot, entrained into the recirculation zone, follows discrete spiral trajectories that terminate at the center of the vortex. The questions are what cause: (1) the unusual sooting structures and (2) the spiral trajectories of the soot? Flame photographs, laser sheet visualizations, and calculations with a 2D CFD-based code (UNICORN) are used to answer these questions. The different sooting structures are related to the spiral transport of the soot, the spatial location of the stoichiometric flame surface with respect to the vortex center, and the burnout of the soot particles. Computations indicate that the spiral trajectories of the soot particles are due to thermophoresis.  相似文献

An analysis was performed for the spontaneous ignition of a hydrogen (or other gaseous fuel) jet emanating from a slot into an oxidizing ambient (e.g., air). A similarity solution of the flow field was obtained. This was combined with the species and energy conservation equations, which were solved using activation energy asymptotics. Limits of spontaneous ignition were identified as functions of slot width, flow rate, and temperatures of the hydrogen jet and ambient gas. Two scenarios are examined: a cool jet flowing into a hot ambient and a hot jet flowing into a cool ambient. For both scenarios, ignition is favored with an increase of either the ambient temperature or the hydrogen supply temperature. Moreover, for the hot ambient scenario, a decrease in fuel Lewis number also promotes ignition. The Lewis number of the oxidizer only has a weak effect on ignition. Because spontaneous ignition is very sensitive to temperature, ignition is expected to occur near the edge of the jet if the hydrogen is cooler than the ambient gas and near the centerline if the hydrogen is hotter than the ambient gas.  相似文献

Characteristics and structure of nominally non-premixed flames of natural gas are investigated using a burner that employs simultaneously two distinct features: fuel and oxidiser direct injection, and inverse fuel and oxidiser delivery. At low exit velocities, the result is an inverse diffusion flame that has been noted in the past for its low NOx emissions, soot luminosity, and narrow stability limits. The present study aimed at extending the burner operating range, and it demonstrated that the inverse flame exhibits a varying degree of partial premixing dependent on the discharge nozzle conditions and the ratio of inner air jet and outer fuel jet velocities. These two variables affect the flame length, temperature distributions, and stability limits. Temperature measurements and Schlieren visualisation show areas of enhanced turbulent mixing in the shear region and the presence of a well-mixed reaction zone on the flame centreline. This reaction zone is enveloped by an outer diffusion flame, yielding a unique double-flame structure. As the fuel–air equivalence ratio is decreasing with an increase in the inner jet velocity, the well-mixed reaction zone extends considerably. These findings suggest a method for establishing a flame of uniform high temperature by optimising the coaxial nozzle geometry and flow conditions. The normalised flame length is decreasing exponentially with the air/fuel velocity ratio. Measurements demonstrate that the inverse flame stability limits change qualitatively with varying degree of partial premixing. At the low premixing level, the flame blow-out is a function of the inner and outer jet velocities and the nozzle conditions. The flame blow-out at high degree of partial premixing occurs abruptly at a single value of the inner air jet velocity, regardless of the fuel jet velocity and almost independent of the discharge nozzle conditions.  相似文献

The unsteady process of upstream head-on quenching of two laminar premixed hydrogen–air flames at different equivalence ratios in one dimension is investigated numerically in the presence of preferential and differential diffusion effects. Important chemical and transport characteristics of the mutual annihilation process are studied during the two primary stages of upstream mutual annihilation, preheat layers' and reaction layers' interactions. Because of the diffusive mobility of the fuel, hydrogen, relative to heat and the oxidizer, preferential and differential diffusion effects result in a shift in the equivalence ratio in the reaction zone to leaner conditions. This shift, in turn, affects the subsequent reaction layers' interactions through qualitative and quantitative changes in the rates of reactants' consumption and radicals' production. Another consequence of this shift is the presence of excess and ‘unburnt’ fuel or oxidizer at the end of the mutual annihilation process. The process of mutual annihilation occurs over time scales that are significantly shorter than characteristic residence times associated with flames.  相似文献

The present study experimentally investigates the structure and instabilities associated with extremely low-stretch (1 s−1) gaseous diffusion flames. Ultra-low-stretch flames are established in normal gravity by bottom burning of a methane/nitrogen mixture discharged from a porous spherically symmetric burner of large radius of curvature. OH-PLIF and IR imaging techniques are used to characterize the reaction zone and the burner surface temperature, respectively. A flame stability diagram mapping the response of the ultra-low-stretch diffusion flame to varying fuel injection rate and nitrogen dilution is explored. In this diagram, two main boundaries are identified. These boundaries separate the stability diagram into three regions: sooting flame, non-sooting flame, and extinction. Two distinct extinction mechanisms are noted. For low fuel injection rates, flame extinction is caused by heat loss to the burner surface. For relatively high injection rates, at which the heat loss to burner surface is negligible, flame radiative heat loss is the dominant extinction mechanism. There also exists a critical inert dilution level beyond which the flame cannot be sustained. The existence of multi-dimensional flame phenomena near the extinction limits is also identified. Various multi-dimensional flame patterns are observed, and their evolutions are studied using direct chemiluminescence and OH-PLIF imaging. The results demonstrate the usefulness of the present burner configuration for the study of low-stretch gaseous diffusion flames.  相似文献
