This paper is concerned with a new approach for solving quadratic assignment problems (QAP). We first reformulate QAP as a concave quadratic programming problem and apply an outer approximation algorithm. In addition, an improvement routine is incorporated in the final stage of the algorithm. Computational experiments on a set of standard data demonstrate that this algorithm can yield favorable results with a relatively low computational effort.  相似文献

We describe a new convex quadratic programming bound for the quadratic assignment problem (QAP). The construction of the bound uses a semidefinite programming representation of a basic eigenvalue bound for QAP. The new bound dominates the well-known projected eigenvalue bound, and appears to be competitive with existing bounds in the trade-off between bound quality and computational effort. We present semidefinite relaxations for unconstrained non-convex quadratic mixed-integer optimization problems. These relaxations yield tight bounds and are computationally easy to solve for medium-sized instances, even if some of the variables are integer and unbounded. In this case, the problem contains an infinite number of linear constraints; these constraints are separated dynamically. We use this approach as a bounding routine in an SDP-based branch-and-bound framework. In case of a convex objective function, the new SDP bound improves the bound given by the continuous relaxation of the problem. Numerical experiments show that our algorithm performs well on various types of non-convex instances.  相似文献

In this paper we prove that the Classical Gilmore-Lawler lower bound for the quadratic assignment problem is equivalent to a solution of a certain linear programming problem. By adding additional constraints to this linear programming problem we derive a lower bound which is at least as good as the Gilmore-Lawler lower bound. Some of this research was done while the author was on sabbatical leave at the Department of Management, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Kowloon, Hong Kong.  相似文献

The graph partitioning problem is to partition the vertex set of a graph into a number of nonempty subsets so that the total weight of edges connecting distinct subsets is minimized. Previous research requires the input of cardinalities of subsets or the number of subsets for equipartition. In this paper, the problem is formulated as a zero-one quadratic programming problem without the input of cardinalities. We also present three equivalent zero-one linear integer programming reformulations. Because of its importance in data biclustering, the bipartite graph partitioning is also studied. Several new methods to determine the number of subsets and the cardinalities are presented for practical applications. In addition, hierarchy partitioning and partitioning of bipartite graphs without reordering one vertex set, are studied.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate Semidefinite Programming (SDP) lower bounds for the Quadratic Minimum Spanning Tree Problem (QMSTP). Two SDP lower bounding approaches are introduced here. Both apply Lagrangian Relaxation to an SDP relaxation for the problem. The first one explicitly dualizes the semidefiniteness constraint, attaching to it a positive semidefinite matrix of Lagrangian multipliers. The second relies on a semi-infinite reformulation for the cone of positive semidefinite matrices and dualizes a dynamically updated finite set of inequalities that approximate the cone. These lower bounding procedures are the core ingredient of two QMSTP Branch-and-bound algorithms. Our computational experiments indicate that the SDP bounds computed here are very strong, being able to close at least 70% of the gaps of the most competitive formulation in the literature. As a result, their accompanying Branch-and-bound algorithms are competitive with the best previously available QMSTP exact algorithm in the literature. In fact, one of these new Branch-and-bound algorithms stands out as the new best exact solution approach for the problem.  相似文献

Methods for solving the educational testing problem which arises from statistics are considered. The problem is to find lower bounds for the reliability of the total score on a test (or subtests) whose items are not parallel using data from a single test administration. We formulate the problem as an optimization problem with a linear objective function and semidefinite constraints. We maintain exact primal and dual feasibility during the course of the algorithm. The search direction is found using an inexact Gauss–Newton method rather than a Newton method on a symmetrized system. Computational results illustrating the robustness of the algorithm are successfully exploited. We consider relaxations for nonconvex quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) based on semidefinite programming (SDP) and the reformulation-linearization technique (RLT). From a theoretical standpoint we show that the addition of a semidefiniteness condition removes a substantial portion of the feasible region corresponding to product terms in the RLT relaxation. On test problems we show that the use of SDP and RLT constraints together can produce bounds that are substantially better than either technique used alone. For highly symmetric problems we also consider the effect of symmetry-breaking based on tightened bounds on variables and/or order constraints.  相似文献

The quadratic assignment problem is an NP-hard discrete optimization program that has been extensively studied for over 50 years. It has a variety of applications in many fields, but has proven itself extremely challenging to solve. As a result, an area of research has been to identify special cases which admit efficient solution strategies. This paper examines four such cases, and shows how each can be explained in terms of the dual region to the continuous relaxation of a classical linear reformulation of the problem known as the level-1 RLT representation. The explanations allow for simplifications and/or generalizations of the conditions defining the special cases.  相似文献

We consider an inverse quadratic programming (QP) problem in which the parameters in both the objective function and the constraint set of a given QP problem need to be adjusted as little as possible so that a known feasible solution becomes the optimal one. We formulate this problem as a linear complementarity constrained minimization problem with a positive semidefinite cone constraint. With the help of duality theory, we reformulate this problem as a linear complementarity constrained semismoothly differentiable (SC1) optimization problem with fewer variables than the original one. We propose a perturbation approach to solve the reformulated problem and demonstrate its global convergence. An inexact Newton method is constructed to solve the perturbed problem and its global convergence and local quadratic convergence rate are shown. As the objective function of the problem is a SC1 function involving the projection operator onto the cone of positively semi-definite symmetric matrices, the analysis requires an implicit function theorem for semismooth functions as well as properties of the projection operator in the symmetric-matrix space. Since an approximate proximal point is required in the inexact Newton method, we also give a Newton method to obtain it. Finally we report our numerical results showing that the proposed approach is quite effective.  相似文献

This paper proposes a column generation approach based on the Lagrangean relaxation with clusters to solve the unconstrained binary quadratic programming problem that consists of maximizing a quadratic objective function by the choice of suitable values for binary decision variables. The proposed method treats a mixed binary linear model for the quadratic problem with constraints represented by a graph. This graph is partitioned in clusters of vertices forming sub-problems whose solutions use the dual variables obtained by a coordinator problem. The column generation process presents alternative ways to find upper and lower bounds for the quadratic problem. Computational experiments were performed using hard instances and the proposed method was compared against other methods presenting improved results for most of these instances.  相似文献

We consider semidefinite programming relaxations of the quadratic assignment problem, and show how to exploit group symmetry in the problem data. Thus we are able to compute the best known lower bounds for several instances of quadratic assignment problems from the problem library: (Burkard et al. in J Global Optim 10:291–403, 1997).  相似文献

We investigate new bounding strategies based on different relaxations of the quadratic assignment problem. In particular, we improve the lower bound found by using an eigenvalue decomposition of the quadratic part and by solving a linear program for the linear part. The improvement is accomplished by applying a steepest ascent algorithm to the sum of the two bounds. Both authors would like to thank the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Canada and the Austrian Government for their support. This author would like to acknowledge partial support from the Department of Combinatorics and Optimization at the University of Waterloo.Research partially supported by Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Canada.  相似文献

The generalized quadratic assignment problem (GQAP) is a generalization of the NP-hard quadratic assignment problem (QAP) that allows multiple facilities to be assigned to a single location as long as the capacity of the location allows. The GQAP has numerous applications, including facility design, scheduling, and network design. In this paper, we propose several GRASP with path-relinking heuristics for the GQAP using different construction, local search, and path-relinking procedures. We introduce a novel approximate local search scheme, as well as a new variant of path-relinking that deals with infeasibilities. Extensive experiments on a large set of test instances show that the best of the proposed variants is both effective and efficient.  相似文献

This paper presents HAS–QAP, a hybrid ant colony system coupled with a local search, applied to the quadratic assignment problem. HAS–QAP uses pheromone trail information to perform modifications on QAP solutions, unlike more traditional ant systems that use pheromone trail information to construct complete solutions. HAS–QAP is analysed and compared with some of the best heuristics available for the QAP: two versions of tabu search, namely, robust and reactive tabu search, hybrid genetic algorithm, and a simulated annealing method. Experimental results show that HAS–QAP and the hybrid genetic algorithm perform best on real world, irregular and structured problems due to their ability to find the structure of good solutions, while HAS–QAP performance is less competitive on random, regular and unstructured problems.  相似文献

In this article we provide an exact expression for computing the autocorrelation coefficient ξ and the autocorrelation length ? of any arbitrary instance of the Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP) in polynomial time using its elementary landscape decomposition. We also provide empirical evidence of the autocorrelation length conjecture in QAP and compute the parameters ξ and ? for the 137 instances of the QAPLIB. Our goal is to better characterize the difficulty of this important class of problems to ease the future definition of new optimization methods. Also, the advance that this represents helps to consolidate QAP as an interesting and now better understood problem.  相似文献

The quadratic assignment problem (QAP), one of the most difficult problems in the NP-hard class, models many real-life problems in several areas such as facilities location, parallel and distributed computing, and combinatorial data analysis. Combinatorial optimization problems, such as the traveling salesman problem, maximal clique and graph partitioning can be formulated as a QAP. In this paper, we present some of the most important QAP formulations and classify them according to their mathematical sources. We also present a discussion on the theoretical resources used to define lower bounds for exact and heuristic algorithms. We then give a detailed discussion of the progress made in both exact and heuristic solution methods, including those formulated according to metaheuristic strategies. Finally, we analyze the contributions brought about by the study of different approaches.  相似文献

Lower bounds for the quadratic assignment problem   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We investigate the classical Gilmore-Lawler lower bound for the quadratic assignment problem. We provide evidence of the difficulty of improving the Gilmore-Lawler bound and develop new bounds by means of optimal reduction schemes. Computational results are reported indicating that the new lower bounds have advantages over previous bounds and can be used in a branch-and-bound type algorithm for the quadratic assignment problem.  相似文献
