We show that a careful treatment of the propagation of optical pulses in inhomogeneously broadened dielectric media, within the framework of the McCall-Hahn theory, leads to some qualitative deviations from the predictions of McCall and Hahn. These new predictions are in strong conflict with experimental results, and may have interesting implications for theoretical work on “soliton” behavior.  相似文献

The evolution of the electromagnetic field in a two-level medium occurring in a matrix with finite response time has been studied. An integrable variant of the Maxwell-Bloch equations with allowance for nonlinear dispersion is derived and solved using the inverse scattering problem. It is shown that the nonlinear dispersion caused by the finite response time of the matrix yields a new possibility of controlling soliton parameters. A particular case of the constructed model can be used to describe field pulses in the parameter domain that occurs between the regions of applicability of the quasi-monochromatic approximation and the approximation of unidirectional propagation of pulses with durations on the order of the oscillation period.  相似文献

We obtained new analytic closed form solutions for distortionless propagation of ultra-short optical pulses through a resonant medium with overlapping Q(j) transitions for j=2. The steady-state pulse shape of this solution has only one peak. Both 2π and 0π solutions are obtained.  相似文献

The surface impedance for non-normal specular reflection from a spatially dispersive medium is calculated using the additional boundary condition of vanishing polarization at the surface. There is no dependence on the longitudinal dielectric constant for either polarization directions of the electric field in contrast to the formula derived by Kliewer and Fuchs.  相似文献

The possibility of pulse compression by the process of two-photon self-induced transparency (TPSIT) is considered. Numerical solutions to the two-photon Bloch-Maxwell equations are presented, and limits established for the maximum amount of detuning from exact resonance for which the compression process will still occur.  相似文献

The theory of optical self-induced transparency is developed for a 0π pulse with a complicated internal structure in an absorbing medium. It is shown that, in the process of propagation through the medium, the effects of conductivity lead to a change in the wave parameters. It is known that classical electromagnetic radiation at a frequency in resonance with energy splittings of atoms in a dielectric medium can be described using the classical sine-Gordon theory. In this paper we quantize the electromagnetic field and compute some quantum effects by using known results from the sine-Gordon quantum field theory. In particular, we compute the intensity of spontaneously emitted radiation using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz with boundary interactions.  相似文献

We investigated how the duration of short laser pulses evolves in a dispersive material, using rms widths and a propagation law based on a pulse quality factor. Experiments were carried out with femtosecond pulses (10 to 25fs at the temporal waist) propagating in bulk fused silica. Excellent agreement was found between theory and experiment. This approach does not require complete characterization of laser pulses and eliminates the need for any assumption regarding the interpretation of autocorrelation traces. The method is of general validity, and it can be applied to pulses of arbitrary shape.  相似文献

A theory of optical self-induced transparency for a two-component soliton in the presence of phase modulation is developed. It is shown that, under these conditions, it is possible to generate a vector soliton with characteristic parameters of oscillations with the sum and difference frequencies in the region of the carrier wave frequency. Explicit analytical expressions for nonlinear wave parameters under experimentally implemented conditions are given. In particular case, a well-known solution in the form of a breather is obtained.  相似文献

Bloch-Maxwell equations, describing the interaction between two-level atoms and the electromagnetic field, are generalized in the case of an atom with degenerate transition 0 ? 1. The degenerate Bloch-Maxwell model has additional discrete degrees of freedom and makes it possible to investigate the polarization properties of resonance optical phenomena. It is shown that the model is completely integrable. The theory of self-induced transparency for pulses whose polarization is a function of space-time variables is developed.  相似文献

We study fully relativistic nonlinear one-dimensional equations describing steady-state solutions for an electromagnetic wave interacting with a plasma in the self-induced transparency regime. In addition to the well-known solution that corresponds to the transmission of the electromagnetic wave into plasma, another steady-state solution is shown to exist in a certain range of amplitudes of the wave. The latter solution corresponds to total reflection of the incident wave. The coexistence of the two solutions indicates the possibility of hysteretic behavior in the self-induced transparency.
