A thermodynamic treatment of the volumetric behavior of surfactant mixtures in water have been developed on the basis of the thermodynamic treatment of mixed micelle by Motomura et al. Densities of aqueous solutions of mixtures of decyltrimethylammonium bromide (DeTAB) and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) have been measured as a function of total molality at constant compositions. The apparent molar volumes of the mixtures have been derived from the density data and the mean partial molar volume of monomeric surfactant mixture V

Enthalpies of dilution of aqueous sodium chloride from 3.0 to about 0.01 mol-kg–1 have been measured from 349.2 to 498.2 K near the saturation pressure of water using a flow calorimeter. Enthalpies of dilution of aqueous dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide have been measured from 0.3 to about 0.005 mol-kg–1 and from 323.4 to 498.3 K, also near the saturation pressure of water.

Heat capacities of the ternary systems water-dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB)-butanol and water-DTAB-pentanol were measured at 25°C. The standard partial molar heat capacities of pentanol in micellar solutions show a maximum at about 0.35 mol-kg–1 DTAB that has been attributed to a micellar structural transition. This maximum tends to vanish by increasing the alcohol concentration and by decreasing the alcohol alkyl chain length; in the case of butanol it was not detected. The behavior of the standard partial molar heat capacities of alcohols in micellar solutions in the region above the cmc and below the structural transition was explained using a previously reported mass-action model for the alcohol distribution between the aqueous and the micellar phase and the pseudophase transition model for micellization. In the resulting equation the contributions due to the temperature effect on the shift of both the micellization equilibrium and the distribution are shown to be negligible so that only the distribution effect and the shift of the micellization equilibrium due to the added alcohol remain. The distribution constant and the partial molar heat capacities of alcohols in the aqueous and micellar phases have been derived by linear regression. The distribution constant for both alcohols agree well with those previously obtained using different techniques. Since the best fit below the structural transition correlates as well with the experimental points above the structural transition, it seems that no difference exists in the standard partial molar heat capacities of alcohols in the two shapes of the micelles. Also, from the present data and those for alkanols in sodium dodecylsulfate reported in the literature it seems that the standard heat capacity of alcohols in the micellar phase does not depend on both the alcohol alkyl chain length and the nature of the hydrophilic moiety of the head group of the micelles.

Micelle size and shape of dodecyldimethylammonium bromide have been determined by measurement of light scattering from its aqueous NaBr solutions. In water and in the presence of NaBr up to 0.07 M, the Debye plots give straight lines with positive slopes, and spherical micelles having molecular weight less than 30 000 are formed. At higher NaBr concentrations, the Debye plots decrease with increasing micelle concentration, indicating the aggregation of the primary spherical micelles into larger secondary micelles. The molecular weight and the radius of gyration of the secondary micelles increase with increasing NaBr concentration, and the relation between molecular weight and radius of gyration suggests that they are rodlike and flexible. Linear logarithmic relations between micelle molecular weight and ionic strength hold for spherical and rodlike micelles, respectively, and the threshold concentration of NaBr for the sphere-rod transition is located at 0.07 M. The spherical micelle of dodecyldimethylammonium ions has a size more than 20 surfactant ions larger in NaBr solutions than in NaCl solutions, and their rodlike micelle has a shorter length in NaBr solutions than in NaCl solutions, when compared at an identical aggregation number, indicating 2 more surfactant ions in its cross-section.

The interfacial tension of aqueous dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC) solution/hexane interface has been measured as a function of pressure at concentrations around the critical micelle concentration (CMC). The derivative of the interfacial tension with respect to pressure has been observed to change abruptly at the CMC as in the case of aqueous dodecylammonium chloride (DAC) solution-hexane system studied already. The volume changes associated with the adsorption of DTAC from its monomeric and micellar states have been calculated. The results have indicated that the micelle formation of surfactant is treated like the appearance of a new macroscopic phase in the system. It has also been concluded that the micelle solubilizing hexane bears resemblance to the adsorbed film in terms of the volume. The difference in the pressure dependence of the volume of micelle formation
MW between DTAC and DAC has been attributed to a larger polar group of DTAC. The fact that the value of
MW is larger than that estimated from the conductivity data has been explained by the solubilization of hexane into the micelle.

In conformity with the conclusion obtained previously, the mixed micelle formation of surfactants was treated thermodynamically as the appearance of a macroscopic bulk phase with the aid of the excess thermodynamic quantities similar to those used for the adsorbed film. The composition of surfactant in the mixed micelle and the thermodynamic quantities of micelle formation were found to be evaluated by applying the thermodynamic equations derived. These equations were extended so as to be applicable to any kind of surfactant mixture. It was shown that the critical micelle concentration vs. composition of surfactant curves form a diagram analogous to the phase diagram of binary mixture. Applying the equation to the published data on typical surfactant systems, this thermodynamic approach was proved to be useful to clarify the miscibility of surfactants in the micellar state.

Formation and coexistence of the micelles and vesicles in mixed solution of cationic and anionic surfactant
In the aqueous mixtures of sodium alkylcarboxylate and alkyltrimethylammonium bromide, large unilamelar vesicles can be formed spontaneously or by sonication as the total carbon number in the HC chains is 19 (or larger). Vesicle formation can be influenced by changes of pH, molar ratio of the two surfactant components, and the polar head group of cationic surfactant. Micelles may coexist with the vesicles in these mixed systems. The larger hydrodynamic radius (200 nm) and aggregation number (800) illustrate that the shape of the micelle in 1:1 C9H19COONa–C10H21N(CH3)3Br is rod-like. In some mixed systems, the micelles can be transformed into stable vesicles by sonication — a phenomenon revealed for the first time. The surface-chemical properties of these catanionic surfactant solutions and the stabilities of vesicle have been studied systematically.

The aggregation of aqueous dodecylphosphonic acid (DPA) and dodecyltrimethylammonium hydroxide (DTAOH) mixtures was studied by several methods. The behavior of DPA-rich mixtures is close to that of pure DPA. This is probably due to the preservation of the hydrogen-bonded structure of the micellar headgroup layer. The behavior is almost ideal. Betweeny
DPA
=0.5 and 0.33 (y
DPA
being the mole fraction of DPA in the surfactant mixture), the hydrogen-bonded structure of the micellar headgroup layer is destroyed. A sort of micellar azeotrope is formed, and the maximum of non-ideal interaction between the two surfactants is attained aty
DPA
=0.4. Fory
DPA
<0.33 the system behaves as a common mixture of a cationic surfactant and a non-ionic one (DPA.2LTA). There is a phenomenon of counterion condensation on aggregates at concentrations over the CMC.

The micelle formation process for a typical anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate, and a typical cationic surfactant,
dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide, has been investigated in a series of mixed solvents consisting of different concentrations
of isomeric hexanediols (1,2-hexanediol and 1,6-hexanediol) in water. The critical micelle concentrations and the degrees
of counterion dissociation of the mixed micelles were obtained from conductance experiments. Luminescence probing experiments
have been used to determine the concentration of micelles in solution and, hence, the micellar aggregation numbers of the
surfactants in the mixed solvent systems. The alcohol aggregation numbers were determined by combining the partition coefficients
(obtained using NMR paramagnetic relaxation enhancement experiments) with the micellar concentrations from the luminescence
probing experiments. All these results are interpreted in terms of the difference in the interaction of the isomeric hexanediols
with the surfactant as a function of the position of the hydroxyl groups on the six-carbon chain of the alcohol.

Ionic/nonionic mixed micelle formation of dodecyldimethylamine oxide (DDAO) was studied by measuring the activities of DDAO+ ions and Cl− ions using surfactant-selective electrodes and Ag/AgCl electrodes at three pH values in the absence of added salt. DDAO monomer
exists as either a nonionic or a cationic species depending on the pH of the aqueous solution and hence the two species are
not independent of each other. A new relation between the activity of the surfactant ions and that of the counterions is presented
which differs from the corresponding relation valid for ionic/nonionic mixed micelles consisting of independent components.

The determination of the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of cationic surfactants by capillary electrophoresis was demonstrated. In this study, tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DoTAB) were selected as cationic surfactants and propazine was chosen as test solute. In the evolution of the effective electrophoretic mobility of propazine as a function of surfactant concentration, a dramatic change in slope at a particular concentration is a good indication of the CMC of this surfactant. The CMC values determined experimentally were further confirmed by a curve-fitting approach. Simulation of the electrophoretic mobility curves as a function of surfactant concentration in both micellar electrokinetic chromatography and capillary zone electrophoresis using cationic surfactants as an electrolyte modifier was performed for propazine, and the intersection of these two mobility curves allowed us to precisely predict the CMC of the surfactant. The CMC values determined for TTAB and DoTAB are 1.6 ± 0.1 and 11.0 ± 0.1 mM, respectively, in the case of an electrolytic solution consisting of 70 mM phosphate buffer at pH 6.0. Moreover, the applicability of the electroosmotic mobility as a parameter for the determination of the CMC was examined.

Density measurements of water-dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB)-alcohol ternary systems as a function of alcohol and surfactant concentrations were carried out at 25°C. The alcohols were propanol (PrOH), 2-propanol (2-PrOH) and hexanol (HexOH). The apparent molar volume V,R
of alcohols have been calculated and the standard (infinite dilution) partial molar volumes of alcohols V
R
at each surfactant concentration were obtained by means of a least squares fit of V,R
vs. the alcohol concentration. The V
R
vs. surfactant concentration curves have been rationalized in terms of the partial molar volume of alcohol in the aqueous V
f
and the micellar V
b
phases and the distribution constant of alcohol between the aqueous and the micellar phases K. The V
b
values for PrOH and HexOH together with those of butanol and pentanol previously reported satisfy the additivity rule giving a methylene group contribution of 16.7 cm3-mol–1 which is identical to that reported in the literature from the study of pure liquid alcohols. No difference between V
b
for PrOH and 2-PrOH has been found. From density data of water-alcohol and water-surfactant binary systems and of water-surfactant-alcohol ternary system, the apparent molar volume of the surfactant in the water-alcohol mixed solvent V,S
have been calculated as a function of the surfactant concentration and of the mixed solvent composition. The effect of the alkyl chain length of the alcohols and the effect of isomerization of the alcohols on the V,S
vs. surfactant concentration trends have been analyzed.

Ultrasonic velocities and densities of the water-dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB)-pentanol (PentOH) ternary system were measured at 15, 25 and 35°C as a function of the surfactant and alcohol concentrations. The apparent molar volumes and isentropic compressibilities of PentOH were calculated. The standard partial molar volumes increase with surfactant concentration continuously whereas the standard partial molar isentropic compressibilities show sharp changes in slope at about 0.25 mol-kg–1 DTAB, which can be ascribed to a micellar structural transition. The volume data for alcohol in micellar solutions were treated by a model reported for the distribution of polar additives between aqueous and micellar phases. In the application of the model to compressibility, the contributions due to the pressure effect on the shift of both the micellization equilibrium and the alcohol distribution constant cannot be neglected. This is in contrast to what is found in the case of heat capacity. The distribution constant and the partial molar volumes and compressibilities of PentOH in the micellar phase have been derived by linear regression. Also, the apparent molar volumes and isentropic compressibilities of DTAB in water-pentanol mixed solvents at fixed composition have been calculated. These properties as a function of the surfactant concentration show maxima depending on the temperature and the mixed solvent composition. The decrease beyond the maximum can be attributed to the extraction of PentOH from the aqueous into the micellar phase, where its concentration tends to zero with the progressive increase of the surfactant concentration. As a consequence, by increasing the surfactant concentration, the apparent molar properties of the surfactant in the mixed solvent shifts towards the value in water.

The densities of 1-butanol and 1-pentanol were measured in aqueous solutions of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide and dodecyldimethylamine oxide and the partial molar volumes at infinite dilution of the alcohols in aqueous surfactants solutions were obtained. The observed trends of this quantity as a function of the surfactant concentration were rationalized using a mass-action model for the alcohol distribution between the aqueous and the micellar phase. At the same time, the model was revised to account for the alcohol effect on the surfactant micellization equilibrium. The partial molar volume of alcohols in the aqueous and in the micellar phases and the ratios between the binding constant and the aggregation number were calculated. These thermodynamic quantities are nearly the same in the two surfactants analyzed in this paper but differ appreciably from those in sodium dodecylsulfate. The apparent molar volume of surfactants in some hydroalcoholic solutions at fixed alcohol concentration were also calculated. In the micellization region the trend of this quantity as a function of the surfactant concentration shows a hump, which depends on the alcohol concentration and on the alcohol alkyl chain length. The alcohol extraction from the aqueous to the micellar phase due to the addition of the surfactant can account for the observed trends.

The hydration of dodecyltrimethylammonium (DTAB) micelles is reinterpreted in light of the results of the companion paper (immediately preceding this paper) that showed that the location of the spin probe 16-doxylstearic acid methyl ester (16DSE) changes as a function of the aggregation number, N, of anionic micelles, i.e, that it does not conform to the zero-order model (ZOM). The ZOM requires that the NO(*) moiety diffuse throughout the Stern layer of the micelle and nowhere else. By using the ZOM as a working hypothesis, the previous interpretation (J. Phys. Chem. B 2002, 106, 1926) of 16DSE data proposed that an increasing number of alkyl chain methyl groups occupied the Stern layer as N increased. In this work, the spin probe 5-doxylstearic acid methyl ester that was found to fulfill the ZOM in anionic micelles was measured as a function of N in DTAB and was found to obey the ZOM in this cationic micelle as well. Thus, a simple model of the hydration of micelles that is successful in anionic micelles is also successful in DTAB. The previous results for 16DSE are reinterpreted here as being due to small displacements of the NO(*) moiety as a function of N.

Surface tension of aqueous solutions of mixtures of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC) has been measured and analyzed by using thermodynamic relations. The adsorbed film has been found to contain more DTAB molecules than the solution. The shape formed by the curves of the total molality at constant surface tension against the solution and surface compositions indicates the ideal mixing of the DTAB and DTAC molecules in the adsorbed film. Micellar composition has been estimated at the critical micelle concentration (CMC). The micelles have been found to be richer in DTAB than the solution, but poorer in DTAB than the adsorbed film at the CMC. The DTAB and DTAC molecules have been shown to mix ideally in the micelles. From the comparison with the results on the system of decylammonium bromide and decylammonium chloride, it has been concluded that, on the mixing of surfactants differing only in counter ions, the adsorbed film is influenced more significantly by the ionic head group of the surfactant than the micelle.

Electrical conductivity of aqueous solutions of dodecylpyridinium chloride and bromide have been determined. From these data
the critical micelle concentration (cmc) was determined. The thermal properties as standard Gibbs free energy, enthalpy and entropy of micellization was estimated
from a uncharged-phase separation model and enables to obtain another properties like heat capacity of micellization and the
relevant parameters in the minimum of temperature dependence of cmc. The enthalpy-entropy compensation was shown for the studied compounds.

The physico‐chemical properties of organized assemblies (micelle or vesicle) from sodium alkylcarboxylate ‐ alkyltrimethyl ‐ammonium bromide mixture have been investigated systematically. In different mixed cationc‐anionic surfactant systems, micelles and vesicles can coexist or be transformed into each other on different conditions. The experimental results are explained prelimilarily from the viewpoint of molecular packing geometry. The solubilization of organic compound in the mixed surfactant system was also studied in detail.

The enthalpies of solution and of dilution of 1-butanol and 1-pentanol were measured in micellar solutions of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide by systematically changing the concentration of alcohols and surfactant. The enthalpies of solution at infinite dilution of alcohols at each surfactant concentration were evaluated from a linear plot. This quantity increases with surfactant concentration (up to 0.8m) with a curvature which depends on the alcohol alkyl chain length. The difficulties arising for a quantitative treatment of both the enthalpies of dilution and of solution at finite alcohol concentrations are discussed. The dependence on the surfactant concentration of the standard enthalpies of solution and the enthalpies of dilution for m0 are rationalized. From the resulting equations the distribution constant, standard enthalpy of transfer, standard enthalpy of solution, and the alcohol-alcohol interaction parameter in the micellar phase are evaluated. The enthalpies of transfer obtained using this technique agree well with those previously reported from enthalpies of mixing. The distribution constants also agree with those reported in the literature from several approaches: mixing enthalpies, partial molar volumes, and the dependence of the cmc on added alcohol.
