Some methods of numerical analysis, used for obtaining estimations of zeros of polynomials, are studied again, more especially in the case where the zeros of these polynomials are all strictly positive, distinct and real. They give, in particular, formal lower and upper bounds for the smallest zero. Thanks to them, we produce new formal lower and upper bounds of the constant in Markov-Bernstein inequalities in L 2 for the norm corresponding to the Laguerre and Gegenbauer inner products. In fact, since this constant is the inverse of the square root of the smallest zero of a polynomial, we give formal lower and upper bounds of this zero. Moreover, a new sufficient condition is given in order that a polynomial has some complex zeros. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

In this paper, we treat three questions related to the d-orthogonality of the Humbert polynomials. The first one consists to determinate the explicit expression of the d-dimensional functional vector for which the d-orthogonality holds. The second one is the investigation of the components of Humbert polynomial sequence. That allows us to introduce, as far as we know, new d-orthogonal polynomials generalizing the classical Jacobi ones. The third one consists to solve a characterization problem related to a generalized hypergeometric representation of the Humbert polynomials.  相似文献

This paper centers on the derivation of a Rodrigues-type formula for the Gegenbauer matrix polynomial. A connection between Gegenbauer and Jacobi matrix polynomials is given.  相似文献

The Markov–Bernstein inequalities for the Jacobi measure remained to be studied in detail. Indeed the tools used for obtaining lower and upper bounds of the constant which appear in these inequalities, did not work, since it is linked with the smallest eigenvalue of a five diagonal positive definite symmetric matrix. The aim of this paper is to generalize the qd algorithm for positive definite symmetric band matrices and to give the mean to expand the determinant of a five diagonal symmetric matrix. After that these new tools are applied to the problem to produce effective lower and upper bounds of the Markov–Bernstein constant in the Jacobi case. In the last part we com pare, in the particular case of the Gegenbauer measure, the lower and upper bounds which can be deduced from this paper, with those given in Draux and Elhami (Comput J Appl Math 106:203–243, 1999) and Draux (Numer Algor 24:31–58, 2000).   相似文献

For a positive definite infinite matrix A, we study the relationship between its associated sequence of orthonormal polynomials and the asymptotic behaviour of the smallest eigenvalue of its truncation An of size n×n. For the particular case of A being a Hankel or a Hankel block matrix, our results lead to a characterization of positive measures with finite index of determinacy and of completely indeterminate matrix moment problems, respectively.  相似文献

We investigate monotonicity properties of extremal zeros of orthogonal polynomials depending on a parameter. Using a functional analysis method we prove the monotonicity of extreme zeros of associated Jacobi, associated Gegenbauer and q-Meixner-Pollaczek polynomials. We show how these results can be applied to prove interlacing of zeros of orthogonal polynomials with shifted parameters and to determine optimally localized polynomials on the unit ball.  相似文献

Asymptotic expansions are given for large values of n of the generalized Bessel polynomials . The analysis is based on integrals that follow from the generating functions of the polynomials. A new simple expansion is given that is valid outside a compact neighborhood of the origin in the z-plane. New forms of expansions in terms of elementary functions valid in sectors not containing the turning points zi/n are derived, and a new expansion in terms of modified Bessel functions is given. Earlier asymptotic expansions of the generalized Bessel polynomials by Wong and Zhang (1997) and Dunster (2001) are discussed.  相似文献

We consider an infinite Hermitian positive definite matrix M which is the moment matrix associated with a measure μ with infinite and compact support on the complex plane. We prove that if the polynomials are dense in L2(μ) then the smallest eigenvalue λn of the truncated matrix Mn of M of size (n+1)×(n+1) tends to zero when n tends to infinity. In the case of measures in the closed unit disk we obtain some related results.  相似文献

A special case of the big q-Jacobi polynomials Pn(x;a,b,c;q), which corresponds to a=b=−c, is shown to satisfy a discrete orthogonality relation for imaginary values of the parameter a (outside of its commonly known domain 0<a<q−1). Since Pn(x;qα,qα,−qα;q) tend to Gegenbauer (or ultraspherical) polynomials in the limit as q→1, this family represents another q-extension of these classical polynomials, different from the continuous q-ultraspherical polynomials of Rogers. For a dual family with respect to the polynomials Pn(x;a,a,−a;q) (i.e., for dual discrete q-ultraspherical polynomials) we also find new orthogonality relations with extremal measures.  相似文献

The Do?ev-Grosswald asymptotic series for the generalized Bessel polynomials yn(z; a, b) is extended to O(1/n4) relative accuracy. The differential equation of the asymptotic factor, derived from the differential equation for yn(z; a, b), is the basis of a different and easier method that employs simple recurrence relations and much less algebra for obtaining the same series. This is applied to the important special case of a = 1 to obtain the asymptotic series to O(1/n11) relative accuracy.  相似文献

We study the asymptotic behavior of the zeros of a sequence of polynomials whose weighted norms, with respect to a sequence of weight functions, have the same nth root asymptotic behavior as the weighted norms of certain extremal polynomials. This result is applied to obtain the (contracted) weak zero distribution for orthogonal polynomials with respect to a Sobolev inner product with exponential weights of the form eφ(x), giving a unified treatment for the so-called Freud (i.e., when φ has polynomial growth at infinity) and Erdös (when φ grows faster than any polynomial at infinity) cases. In addition, we provide a new proof for the bound of the distance of the zeros to the convex hull of the support for these Sobolev orthogonal polynomials.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce the generalized shift operator generated by the Gegenbauer differential operator , and define a generalized convolution ⊗ on the half-line corresponding to the Gegenbauer differential operator. We investigate the Calderon reproducing formula associated with the convolution ⊗ involving finite Borel measures, leading to results on the Lp-norm and pointwise approximation for functions on the half-line.  相似文献

For the weights exp (?|x|λ), 0<λ≤1, we prove the exact analogue of the Markov-Bernstein inequality. The Markov-Bernstein constant turns out to be of order logn for λ=1 and of order 1 for 0<λ<1. The proof is based on the solution of the problem of how fast a polynomialP n can decrease on [?1,1] ifP n (0)=1. The answer to this problem has several other consequences in different directions; among others, it leads to a general theorem about the incompleteness of the set of polynomials in weightedL p spaces.  相似文献

We present a high‐order shifted Gegenbauer pseudospectral method (SGPM) to solve numerically the second‐order one‐dimensional hyperbolic telegraph equation provided with some initial and Dirichlet boundary conditions. The framework of the numerical scheme involves the recast of the problem into its integral formulation followed by its discretization into a system of well‐conditioned linear algebraic equations. The integral operators are numerically approximated using some novel shifted Gegenbauer operational matrices of integration. We derive the error formula of the associated numerical quadratures. We also present a method to optimize the constructed operational matrix of integration by minimizing the associated quadrature error in some optimality sense. We study the error bounds and convergence of the optimal shifted Gegenbauer operational matrix of integration. Moreover, we construct the relation between the operational matrices of integration of the shifted Gegenbauer polynomials and standard Gegenbauer polynomials. We derive the global collocation matrix of the SGPM, and construct an efficient computational algorithm for the solution of the collocation equations. We present a study on the computational cost of the developed computational algorithm, and a rigorous convergence and error analysis of the introduced method. Four numerical test examples have been carried out to verify the effectiveness, the accuracy, and the exponential convergence of the method. The SGPM is a robust technique, which can be extended to solve a wide range of problems arising in numerous applications. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We study operator semigroups associated with a family of generalized orthogonal polynomials with Hermitian matrix entries. For this we consider a Markov generator sequence, and therefore a Markov semigroup, for the family of orthogonal polynomials on related to the generalized polynomials. We give an expression of the infinitesimal generator of this semigroup and under the hypothesis of diffusion we prove that this semigroup is also Markov. We also give expressions for the kernel of this semigroup in terms of the one-dimensional kernels and obtain some classical formulas for the generalized orthogonal polynomials from the correspondent formulas for orthogonal polynomials on .  相似文献

A formulation is given for the spectral transformation of the generalized eigenvalue problem through the decomposition of the second-order differential operators. This allows us to construct some Laurent biorthogonal polynomial systems with gaps in the degree of the polynomial sequence. These correspond to an exceptional-type extension of the orthogonal polynomials, as an extension of the Laurent biorthogonal polynomials. Specifically, we construct the exceptional extension of the Hendriksen–van Rossum polynomials, which are biorthogonal analogs of the classical orthogonal polynomials. Similar to the cases of exceptional extensions of classical orthogonal polynomials, both state-deletion and state-addition occur.  相似文献

The purpose of this note is to establish a link between recent results on asymptotics for classical orthogonal polynomials and random matrix theory. Roughly speaking it is demonstrated that the ith eigenvalue of a Wishart matrix W(In,s) is close to the ith zero of an appropriately scaled Laguerre polynomial, when . As a by-product we obtain an elemantary proof of the Mar enko–Pastur and the semicircle law without relying on combinatorical arguments.  相似文献
