We prove explicit upper and lower bounds for the torsional rigidity of extrinsic domains of submanifolds P m with controlled radial mean curvature in ambient Riemannian manifolds N n with a pole p and with sectional curvatures bounded from above and from below, respectively. These bounds are given in terms of the torsional rigidities of corresponding Schwarz-symmetrization of the domains in warped product model spaces. Our main results are obtained using methods from previously established isoperimetric inequalities, as found in, e.g., Markvorsen and Palmer (Proc Lond Math Soc 93:253--272, 2006; Extrinsic isoperimetric analysis on submanifolds with curvatures bounded from below, p. 39, preprint, 2007). As in that paper we also characterize the geometry of those situations in which the bounds for the torsional rigidity are actually attained and study the behavior at infinity of the so-called geometric average of the mean exit time for Brownian motion.  相似文献

In this paper we give lower bounds for the Mislin genus of thesymplectic groups Sp(m). This result appears to be the exactanalogue of Zabrodsky's theorem concerning the special unitarygroups SU(n). It is achieved by the determination of the stablegenus of the quasi-projective quaternionic spaces QH(m), followingthe approach of McGibbon. It leads to a symplectic version ofZabrodsky's conjecture, saying that these lower bounds are infact the exact cardinality of the genus sets. The genus of Sp(2)is well known to contain exactly two elements. We show thatthe genus of Sp(3) has exactly 32 elements and see that theconjecture is true in these two cases. Independently, we also show that any homotopy type in the genusof Sp(m) fibers over the sphere S4m–1 with fiber in thegenus of Sp(m–1), and that any homotopy type in the genusof SU(n) fibers over the sphere S2n–1 with fiber in thegenus of SU(n–1). We prove explicit upper and lower bounds for the L 1-moment spectra for the Brownian motion exit time from extrinsic metric balls of submanifolds P m in ambient Riemannian spaces N n . We assume that P and N both have controlled radial curvatures (mean curvature and sectional curvature, respectively) as viewed from a pole in N. The bounds for the exit moment spectra are given in terms of the corresponding spectra for geodesic metric balls in suitably warped product model spaces. The bounds are sharp in the sense that equalities are obtained in characteristic cases. As a corollary we also obtain new intrinsic comparison results for the exit time spectra for metric balls in the ambient manifolds N n themselves.  相似文献

This is an extension of the theoryfor estimating errors for the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellmanequation. To obtain the upper error bound, we consider the ‘Krylovregularization’ of the Isaacs equation to build an approximatesub-solution of the scheme. To get the lower error bound, weextend the method of Barles & Jakobsen (2005, SIAM J. We present new perturbation analyses for the Cholesky factorizationA = RT R of a symmetric positive definite matrix A. The analysesmore accurately reflect the sensitivity of the problem thanprevious normwise results. The condition numbers here are alteredby any symmetric pivoting used in PAPT = RTR, and both numericalresults and an analysis show that the standard method of pivotingis optimal in that it usually leads to a condition number veryclose to its lower limit for any given A. It follows that thecomputed R will probably have greatest accuracy when we usethe standard symmetric pivoting strategy. Initially we give a thorogh analysis to obtain both first-orderand strict normwise perturbation bounds which are as tight aspossible, leading to a definition of an optimal condition numberfor the problem. Then we use this approach to obtain reasonablyclear first-order and strict componentwise perturbation bounds. We complete the work by giving a much simpler normwise analysiswhich provides a somewhat weaker bound, but which allows usto estimate the condition of the problem quite well with anefficient computation. This simpler analysis also shows whythe factorization is often less sensitive than we previouslythought, and adds further insight into why pivoting usuallygives such good results. This paper presents a rigidity theorem for infinite-dimensionalBergman spaces of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces, which statesthat the Bergman space A1(M), for such a Riemann surface M,is isomorphic to the Banach space of summable sequence, l1.This implies that whenever M and N are Riemann surfaces thatare not analytically finite, and in particular are not necessarilyhomeomorphic, then A1(M) is isomorphic to A1(N). It is knownfrom V. Markovic that if there is a linear isometry betweenA1(M) and A1(N), for two Riemann surfaces M and N of non-exceptionaltype, then this isometry is induced by a conformal mapping betweenM and N. As a corollary to this rigidity theorem presented here,taking the Banach duals of A1(M) and l1 shows that the spaceof holomorphic quadratic differentials on M, Q(M), is isomorphicto the Banach space of bounded sequences, l. As a consequenceof this theorem and the Bers embedding, the Teichmüllerspaces of such Riemann surfaces are locally bi-Lipschitz equivalent.  相似文献

We propose and analyse a fully discrete Petrov–Galerkinmethod with quadrature, for solving second-order, variable coefficient,elliptic boundary value problems on rectangular domains. Inour scheme, the trial space consists of C2 splines of degreer 3, the test space consists of C0 splines of degree r –2, and we use composite (r – 1)-point Gauss quadrature.We show existence and uniqueness of the approximate solutionand establish optimal order error bounds in H2, H1 and L2 norms.  相似文献

A proof is given that the full symmetric group over any infiniteset is the product of finitely many Abelian subgroups. In fact,289 subgroups suffice. Sharp bounds are also obtained on theminimal number k, such that the finite symmetric group Sn isthe product of k Abelian subgroups. We obtain explicit lower and upper bounds for the norm of theRiemann–Liouville operator Vs on Lp[0, 1] which are asymptoticallysharp, thus completing previous results by Eveson. Similar statementsare shown with respect to the norms ||Vs f||p, whenever f satisfiescertain smoothness properties. It turns out that the correctrate of convergence of ||Vs f||p as s depends both on theinfimum of the support of f and on the degree of smoothnessof f. In this paper we prove a single exponential upper bound on thenumber of possible homotopy types of the fibres of a Pfaffianmap in terms of the format of its graph. In particular, we showthat if a semi-algebraic set SRm+n, where R is a real closedfield, is defined by a Boolean formula with s polynomials ofdegree less than d, and : Rm+nRn is the projection on a subspace,then the number of different homotopy types of fibres of doesnot exceed s2(m+1)n(2m nd)O(nm). As applications of our mainresults we prove single exponential bounds on the number ofhomotopy types of semi-algebraic sets defined by fewnomials,and by polynomials with bounded additive complexity. We alsoprove single exponential upper bounds on the radii of ballsguaranteeing local contractibility for semi-algebraic sets definedby polynomials with integer coefficients.  相似文献

A well‐known problem in elasticity consists in placing two linearly elastic materials (of different shear moduli) in a given plane domain Ω, so as to maximize the torsional rigidity of the resulting rod; moreover, the proportion of these materials is prescribed. Such a problem may not have a classical solution as the optimal design may contain homogenization regions, where the two materials are mixed in a microscopic scale. Then, the optimal torsional rigidity becomes difficult to compute. In this paper we extend the local scalar curvature rigidity result in Brendle and Marques (J Differ Geom 88:379–394, 2011) to a small domain on general vacuum static spaces, which confirms the interesting dichotomy of local surjectivity and local rigidity about the scalar curvature in general in the light of the paper (Corvino, Commun Math Phys 214:137–189, 2000). We obtain the local scalar curvature rigidity of bounded domains in hyperbolic spaces. We also obtain the global scalar curvature rigidity for conformal deformations of metrics in the domains, where the lapse functions are positive, on vacuum static spaces with positive scalar curvature, and show such domains are maximal, which generalizes the work in Hang and Wang (Commun Anal Geom 14:91–106, 2006).  相似文献

We prove that simple, thick hyperbolic P-manifolds of dimensionat least three exhibit Mostow rigidity. We also prove a quasi-isometryrigidity result for the fundamental groups of simple, thickhyperbolic P-manifolds of dimension at least three. The keytool in the proof of these rigidity results is a strong formof the Jordan separation theorem, for maps from Sn Sn+1 whichare not necessarily injective.  相似文献

Two-point Pad? approximants are used to calculate tight upperand lower bounds on the quantity <?, f> associated withKirkwood-Riseman integral equations (1+yL)?=f, which arise inthe diffusion theory of flexible macromolecules. The self-adjointoperator L is an integral operator on –1 x 1, with weaklysingular kernel |xx'|–?, and the two specificcases (i) f = 1, (ii) f = x2 are studied. In case (i) directbounds on <?, 1> are obtained; this quantity is inverselyproportional to the translational diffusion constant. In case(ii) bounds on <?, 1 > are found by a new technique involvingcombinations of bounds for the three cases f = 1, f = x2 andf = bx2?b–1. Various types of Pade and related approximantsare compared, using the information <f, Lnf>, n = –2,–1, 0, 1, 2, 3 and (an upper bound on L) for severalvalues of the positive parameter y. Pad?-approximant-generating trial vectors are investigated anda convergence theorem is established. The vector consistingof an optimum linear combination of L–1f, f and Lf isfound to be an accurate approximation to a numerical solutionin case (ii), for all values of y and x. Non-trivial estimates for fractional moments of smooth cubicWeyl sums are developed. Complemented by bounds for such sumsof use on both the major and minor arcs in a Hardy-Littlewooddissection, these estimates are applied to derive an upper boundfor the sth moment of the smooth cubic Weyl sum of the expectedorder of magnitude as soon as s> 7.691.
