We have simulated 50 nm up and down wavelength conversion for a non-return to zero differential phase shift keying (NRZ-DPSK) signal using four-wave mixing in an optimized semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) at 10 Gb/s for the first time. For this we optimized the SOA parameters to achieve sufficient quality and enhancement in four-wave mixing effect. This can be done in such a manner that the SOA never saturates and produces maximum four-wave mixing signals with minimum gain fluctuations. The quality of the converted signal is best before the saturation of SOA. Finally, we have numerically simulated cascaded wavelength converters up to 1300 km transmission distance.  相似文献

We present a numerical investigation on the temperature dependence of gain recovery, of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). It is shown that the decrease in temperature significantly speed-up the gain recovery of the SOA. Under typical operating conditions, a 20 K reduction in temperature of the SOA results in a decrease of 150 ps in the gain recovery time. A comparative estimation of device temperature and assisted-light power requirements for enhancing the gain recovery has also been carried out. It is found that, a decrease of 8 K in the temperature of the SOA, is as effective in enhancing the gain recovery as injection of 25 dBm assisted-light power in the counter-propagating mode. Our study shows that under moderate current biasing conditions, temperature reduction is a better and convenient option to speed-up the gain recovery of an SOA, than the use of external assisted-light injection, which requires an additional laser source and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) components for coupling and de-coupling, leading to insertion losses in the communication channel.  相似文献

An improved harmonic mode-locked Semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) fiber ring lasers has been presented and numerically investigated based on the self-reproduction theory. The numerical result shows that a narrower optical pulse train with a more symmetrical-temporal shape can be obtained, when the modulation SOA is DC biased on high current, whereas the gain SOA is DC biased on the low current functions as a gain compensator in the experimental setup. Also, the system parameters effects on the characteristic of the harmonic mode-locked pulse have been investigated.  相似文献

A novel ultrahigh-speed all-optical demultiplexer (DMUX) with polarization-shift-keying (PolSK) modulation input signals is proposed. This design is based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). For analyzing each amplifier, we use finite-difference method (FDM) based on solution of the traveling wave coupled equations. Using numerical simulation, the all-optical DMUX is theoretically realized at 40 Gb/s. We also study the relation between optical confinement factor and thickness of active layer of the SOA section successfully, and investigate the increasing effect of confinement factor on the DMUX optical output power. With this work, the confinement factor is increased from 0.3 to 0.48, and as a result, the output power approximately twice of its initial value is achieved. Moreover, the effects of polarization dependence of SOA on the output performance of all-optical DMUX for PolSK signal are theoretically investigated in detail.  相似文献

The behavior of a semiconductor laser subject to filtered optical feedback is studied in dependence on the width of the filter. Of special interest are pure frequency oscillations where the laser intensity is practically constant. We show that frequency oscillations are stable in a large region of intermediate values of the filter width, where the dispersion of the filter is able to compensate for the well-known phase-amplitude coupling of the semiconductor laser. Our stability diagram covers the entire range from a very narrow filter, when the system behaves like a laser with monochromatic optical injection, to a very broad filter, when the laser effectively receives conventional (i.e., unfiltered) optical feedback.  相似文献

Phase modulation schemes are attracting much interest for use in ultra-fast optical communication systems because they are much less sensitive to fibre nonlinearities compared to conventional intensity modulation formats. Semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) can be used to amplify and process phase modulated signals, but with a consequent addition of nonlinear phase noise (NLPN). Existing SOA NLPN models are simplistic. In this paper we show that a more accurate model can be used, which results in simple expressions for SOA nonlinear noise, in particular when used to amplify differential phase shift keyed modulated data. The model is used to calculate the optical signal to noise ratio introduced by a power booster SOA and the first inline amplifier of a 40 Gb/s NRZ-DQPSK single channel link.

This paper provides the analysis of wavelength converted pulses obtained with a simple semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-based wavelength conversion scheme, which exploits cross phase modulation (XPM) in an SOA in conjunction with shifted filtering. The analysis includes experimental measurements of the back-to-back system performances as well as frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) characterisations of the wavelength converted pulses. These measurements are implemented at different bit rates up to 80 Gbit/s and for both red and blue-shifted filtering, particularly showing different patterning effect dependencies of red and blue-shifting techniques. This analysis is developed by the addition of a numerical study which corroborates the experimental results. A further understanding of the different performances of red and blue filtering techniques, presented in the literature, can thus be proposed. The placement of the filter to undertake red-shifted filtering (RSF) allows us to achieve very short pulse widths but high bit rate operation is limited by pattern effects. The blue-shifted filtering (BSF) technique shows optimum performance as regards to patterning effects even if the wavelength converted pulses can be larger.  相似文献

We propose a novel all-optical format conversion from the return-to-zero (RZ) to the non-return-to-zero (NRZ) based on single semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and optical band-pass filter (OBE). We demonstrate the proof of the principle experiment at 10 Gbps by using the test SOA and OBF converter. The format conversion can be achieved with output extinction ratio of 11.51 dB. The BER is 5.5×10^-9 when the power of NRZ is - 10 dBm. The proposed scheme is robust and potential for applications in optical networks.  相似文献

We present a numerical and analytical investigation of the deformation of a modulated wave group in third-order nonlinear media. Numerical results show that an optical pulse that is initially bichromatic can deform substantially with large variations in amplitude and phase. For specific cases, the bi-chromatic pulse deforms into a train of temporal solitons. Based on the coupled phase-amplitude equation of Nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS), the initial deformation of the modulated wave-packet will be explained and an instability condition can be derived. Energy arguments are given that provide an alternative derivation of the instability condition.  相似文献

We experimentally demonstrate all-optical reshaping of 40 Gbits/s packets by using cross-gain compression in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). This scheme, which is based on cross-saturation effects between two conjugate signals copropagating in a single SOA, is wavelength preserving and polarization independent and does not suffer from any transient effect at packet edges. We report evidence of noise redistribution and packet reshaping by means of the bit-error rate versus threshold measurements for different input optical signal-to-noise ratios.  相似文献

In this paper, the star structure coupled cavities system is composed of six single-mode cavities. One of them is at the center of the star structure, and other five cavities are at the five vertices of the star structure, respectively. The center cavity is connected with other five cavities by optical fibers. The situation is considered that six identical two-level atoms are separately trapped in six single-mode optical cavities, each atom resonantly interacts with cavity via a one-photon hopping, and the total excitation number of the system equals one. Negativity is adopted to quantify the degree of entanglement between two subsystems. The entanglement properties between atoms and that between cavities are investigated. The influences of atom-cavity coupling coefficient on the entanglement properties between two subsystems are studied. The results obtained using the numerical method show that the atom-atom entanglement is weakened, and the cavity-cavity entanglement is strengthened with the increase of atom-cavity coupling coefficient.

We propose a novel scheme to generate ultrawideband (UWB) monocycle pulses based on cross-phase modulation (XPM) of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). The proposed system consists of a SOA and an optical bandpass filter (OBF). Due to the XPM, a continuous wave (CW) probe signal is phase modulated by another optical Gauss pulse in the SOA. The OBF will convert the phase modulation to intensity modulation. A pair of polarity-reversed UWB monocycle pulses is achieved by locating the probe carrier at the positive and negative linear slopes of the OBF. Both cases conform to the UWB definition of the Federal Communications Commission.  相似文献

Facets of semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) designed for external cavity lasers must be coated with an antireflection (AR) film of high quality and extremely low reflectance. Therefore measurements of facet reflectance play a crucial role in the fabrication of such AR coating. The reflectance can be estimated by studying the optical power reflected from the Fabry-Perot cavity formed for that purpose by the examined SOA facet and the end of a single-mode fibre. We have made analysis of practical suitability of such measurement method. Theoretical calculations show that, for the low reflectance coatings, losses due to light coupling into optical fibre cannot be omitted in the analysis of the experimental results. To verify this conclusion a theoretical model was tested for a low reflectance surface and we have found that the relative error of the measurements supported by the theoretical model is on the order of 8%.  相似文献

We calculate the steady-state and first-order time varying atom—field correlation functions in the weak-excitation limit of absorptive optical bistability from a linearized theory of quantum fluctuations. We formulate a Fokker—Planck equation in the positive P representation following the phase-space analysis in [H. J. Carmichael, Phys. Rev. A 33, 3262 (1986)], which is suitable for the determination of cross-correlations as it does not resort to adiabatic elimination. Special emphasis is placed on the limit of collective strong coupling as attained from a vanishing photon-loss rate. We compare to the cavity-transmission spectrum with reference to experimental results obtained for macroscopic dissipative systems, discussing the role of anomalous correlations arising as distinct nonclassical features.

Abstract

We investigate 20 Gb/s wavelength conversion for return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (RZ-DPSK) signal using four-wave mixing (FWM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). We show that the 10-Gb/s RZ-DPSK signal-to-pump ratio increases up to ?0.286 dB with Q factor improvement of 1.663 dB for increasing the cascadeability of optical networks. The effect of variation in bandwidth for an ideal dual-arm Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is illustrated. For different bit rates, the converted power signal is investigated with increase in signal input power. We show that the quality of converted signal is best before the saturation of SOA. The dependence of four-wave mixing (FWM) efficiency and converted signal power with signal input power is also studied, and it is found that FWM efficiency decreases with increase in signal input power.

The impact of signal-to–pump power ratio, unsaturated amplifier gain, and pump power is further optimized with minimum Q factor penalty for 10-Gb/s and 20-Gb/s bit rate. We show that converted signal power increases up to power saturation level and then starts decreasing. We also show that with higher bit rate, we have a wide range of choices for pump power signal. We further investigate the quality of converted signal at 10 Gb/s, which shows an improvement over signal input power. Finally, the increase in transmission distance after wavelength conversion is investigated.  相似文献

运用激光模式耦合理论分析了半导体光放大器(SOA)与单模通信光纤的连接损耗,并设计制作了楔形柱面光纤微透镜用来实现两者的模斑匹配,有效地降低了器件的光耦合损耗.本文介绍了楔形柱面光纤微透镜耦合的1.3 μm半导体光放大器(SOA)组件及其制作方法.该组件的最大增益不小于14 dB,其偏振灵敏度小于1 dB,增益波动不大于0.5 dB.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the situation that four identical two-level atoms are separately trapped in four single-mode optical cavities, which are placed at the vertices of a tetrahedron and coupled by six fibers. Each atom resonantly interacts with cavity via a one-photon hopping. The evolution of the state vector of the system is given by solving the schrödinger equation when the total excitation number of the system equals one. The geometrical quantum discords between atoms and between cavities are investigated. The effects of cavity-fiber coupling coefficient on the geometrical quantum discords between atoms and between cavities are discussed. The results obtained using the numerical method indicate that the geometrical quantum discords between atoms and between cavities are all weakened with increase of cavity-fiber coupling coefficient.
