Hydrated alkali metal ion-phenol complexes were studied to model these species in aqueous solution for M=Na and K. IR predissociation spectroscopy in the O-H stretch region was used to analyze the structures of M+(Phenol)(H2O)n cluster ions, for n = 1-4. The onset of hydrogen bonding was observed to occur at n=4. Ab initio calculations were used to qualitatively explore the types of hydrogen-bonded structures of the M+(Phenol)(H2O)4 isomers. By combining the ab initio calculations and IR spectra, several different structures were identified for each metal ion. In contrast to benzene, detailed in a previous study of Na+(Benzene)n(H2O)m [J. Chem. Phys. 110, 8429 (1999)], phenol is able to bind directly to Na+ even in the presence of four waters. This is likely the result of the sigma-type interaction between the phenol oxygen and the ion. With K+, the dominant isomers are those in which the phenol O-H group is involved in a hydrogen bond with the water molecules, while with Na+, the dominant isomers are those in which the phenol O-H group is free and the water molecules are hydrogen-bonded to each other. Spectra and ab initio calculations for the M+(Phenol)Ar cluster ions for M=Na and K are reported to characterize the free phenol O-H stretch in the M+(Phenol) complex. While pi-type configurations were observed for binary M+(Phenol) complexes, sigma-type configurations appear to dominate the hydrated cluster ions.  相似文献

Many of the group IA and IIA metal ions, such as Na+, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+, play crucial roles in biological functions. Previous theoretical studies generally focus on the number of water molecules bound to a particular (as opposed to all) alkali or alkaline earth cations and could not establish a single preferred CN for the heavier alkali and alkaline earth ion-water complexes. Crystal structures of hydrated Na+, K+, and Rb+ also cannot establish the preferred number of inner-shell water molecules bound to these cations. Consequently, it is unclear if the gas-phase CNs of group IA metal hydrates increase with increasing ion size, as observed for the group IIA series from the Cambridge Structural Database, and if the same factors govern the gas-phase CNs of both group IA and IIA ion-water complexes. Thus, in this work, we determine the number of water molecules directly bound to the series of alkali (Li+, Na+, K+, and Rb+) and alkaline earth (Be2+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, and Ba2+) metal ions in the gas phase by computing the free energy for forming an isolated metal-aqua complex as a function of the number of water molecules at 298 K. The preferred gas-phase CNs of group IA hydrates appear insensitive to the ion size; they are all 4, except for Rb+, where a CN of 6 seems as likely. In contrast, the preferred gas-phase CNs of the group IIA dications increase with increasing ion size; they are 4 for Be2+, 6 for Mg2+ and Ca2+, and 7 for Sr2+ and Ba2+. An entropic penalty disfavors a gas-phase CN greater than 4 for group IA hydrates, but it does not dictate the gas-phase CNs of group IIA hydrates. Instead, interactions between the metal ion and first-shell water molecules and between first-shell and second-shell water molecules govern the preferred gas-phase CNs of the group IIA metal hydrates.  相似文献

Alkali metal cations easily form complexes with proteins in biological systems; understanding amino acid clusters with these cations can provide useful insight into their behaviors at the molecular level including diagnosis and therapy of related diseases. For the purpose of characterization of basic interaction between amino acids and alkali metal, each of the 20 naturally occurring amino acids were ionized in the presence of lithium, sodium and potassium cations by electrospray ionization, and the resulting product ions were analyzed. We focus our attention on the gas phase alkali metal ion-proton exchanged complexes in current study, specifically complexes with serine, threonine, asparagine and glutamine, which share characteristic pattern unlike other amino acids. All amino acids generated [M + H](+) and [M + Na](+) ions, where M stands for the neutral amino acid. Serine, threonine, asparagine and glutamine generated cluster ions of [nM - nH + (n + 1)Na](+) and [nM - (n - 1)H + (n - 1)Na + K](+) , where n = 1-7. While the (M - H + Li) and (M - H + K) species were not observed, the neutral (M - H + Na) species formed by proton-sodium cation exchange had a highly stable cyclic structure with ketone and amine ligand sites, suggesting that (M - H + Na) serves as a building block in cluster ion formation. Cluster ion intensity distributions of [nM - nH + (n + 1)Na](+) and [nM - (n - 1)H + (n - 1)Na + K](+) showed a magic number at n = 3 and 4, respectively. Extensive B3LYP-DFT quantum mechanical calculations were carried out to elucidate the geometry and energy of the cluster ions, and they provided a reasonable explanation for the stability and structure of the cluster ions.  相似文献

Syntheses of alkali metal adducts [LVO(2)M(H(2)O)(n)] (1-7) (M = Na(+), K(+), Rb(+), and Cs(+); L = L(1)(-)L(3)) of anionic cis-dioxovanadium(V) species (LVO(2)(-)) of tridentate dithiocarbazate-based Schiff base ligands H(2)L (S-methyl-3-((5-(R-2-hydroxyphenyl))methyl)dithiocarbazate, R = H, L = L(1); R = NO(2), L = L(2); R = Br, L = L(3)) have been reported. The LVO(2)(-) moieties here behave like an analogue of carboxylate group and have displayed interesting variations in their binding pattern with the change in size of the alkali metal ions as revealed in the solid state from the X-ray crystallographic analysis of 1, 3, 6, and 7. The compounds have extended chain structures, forming ion channels, and are stabilized by strong Coulombic and hydrogen-bonded interactions. The number of coordinated water molecules in [LVO(2)M(H(2)O)(n)] decreases as the charge density on the alkali metal ion decreases (n = 3.5 for Na(+) and 1 for K(+) and Rb(+), while, for Cs(+), no coordinated water molecule is present). In solution, compounds 1-7 are stable in water and methanol, while in aprotic solvents of higher donor strengths, viz. CH(3)CN, DMF and DMSO, they undergo photoinduced reduction when exposed to visible light, yielding green solutions from their initial yellow color. The putative product is a mixed-oxidation (mu-oxo)divanadium(IV/V) species as revealed from EPR, electronic spectroscopy, dynamic (1)H NMR, and redox studies.  相似文献

We performed first principles density functional calculations to study the effect of monovalent ions M+ (M = Li,Na,K) and A- (A = F,Cl,Br) in water with the aim of characterizing the local molecular properties of hydration. For this reason, several ion-water clusters, up to five or six water molecules were considered; such structures were optimized, and the Wannier analysis was then applied to determine the average molecular dipole moment of water. We found that with an increasing number of water molecules, the molecular polarization is determined by the water-water interaction rather than the water-ion interaction, as one would intuitively expect. These results are consistent with those obtained in previous density functional calculations and with other results obtained by employing classical polarizable water models. The main message of this work is that as one increases the number of molecules the average dipole moment of all water molecules and the ones in the first shell tends to the same value as the average of a similar sized cluster of pure water. This supports the use of nonpolarizable classical models of water in classical atomistic simulations.

The gas-phase structure, stability, spectra, and electron density topography of H(-)W(n) clusters (where n = 1-8) have been calculated using coupled-cluster CCSD(T) and M?ller-Plesset second-order perturbation (MP2) theory combined with complete basis set (CBS) approaches. The performance of various density functional theory (DFT) based methods such as B3LYP, M05-2X, M06, M06-L, and M06-2X using 6-311++G(d,p), and aug-cc-pVXZ (aVXZ, where X = D, T, and Q) basis sets has also been assessed by considering values calculated using CCSD(T)/CBS limit as reference. The performance of the functionals has been ranked based on the mean signed/unsigned error. The comparison of geometrical parameters elicits that the geometrical parameters predicted by B3LYP/aVTZ method are in good agreement with those values obtained at MP2/aVTZ level of theory. Results show that M05-2X functional outperform other functionals in predicting the energetics when compared to CCSD(T)/CBS value. On the other hand, values predicted by M06-2X, and M06 methods, are closer to those values obtained from MP2/CBS approach. It is evident from the calculations that H(-)W(n) (where n = 5-8) clusters adopt several interesting structural motifs such as pyramidal, prism, book, Clessidra, cubic, cage, and bag. The important role played by ion-water (O-H···H(-)) and water-water (O-H···O) interactions in determining the stability of the clusters has also been observed. Analysis of the results indicates that the most stable cluster is made up of minimum number of O-H···H(-) interaction in conjugation with the maximum number of O-H···O interactions. The Bader theory of atoms in molecules (AIM) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses has also been carried out to characterize the nature of interactions between hydride ion and water molecules. It can be observed from the vibrational spectra of H(-)W(n) clusters, the stretching frequencies involving ion-water interaction always exhibit larger redshift and intensities than that of water-water (inter solvent) interactions.  相似文献

Organic peroxides such as the cumene hydroperoxide I (M(r) = 152 u), the di-tert-butyl peroxide II (M(r) = 146 u) and the tert-butyl peroxybenzoate III (M(r) = 194 u) were analyzed by atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry using a water-methanol mixture as solvent with a low flow-rate of mobile phase and unusual conditions of the source temperature (< or =50 degrees C) and probe temperature (70-200 degrees C). The mass spectra of these compounds show the formation of (i) an [M + H](+) ion (m/z 153) for the hydroperoxide I, (ii) a stable adduct [M + CH(3)OH(2)](+) ion (m/z 179) for the dialkyl peroxide II and (iii) several protonated adduct species such as protonated molecules (m/z 195) and different protonated adduct ions (m/z 227, 389 and 421) for the peroxyester III. Tandem mass spectrometric experiments, exact mass measurements and theoretical calculations were performed for characterize these gas-phase ionic species. Using the double-well energy potential model illustrating a gas-phase bimolecular reaction, three important factors are taken into account to propose a qualitative interpretation of peroxide behavior toward the CH(3)OH(2) (+), i.e. thermochemical parameters (DeltaHdegrees(reaction)) and two kinetic factors such as the capture constant of the initial stable ion-dipole and the magnitude of the rate constant of proton transfer reaction into the loose proton bond cluster.  相似文献

The influence of halogenation on the properties of uracil and its noncovalent interactions with alkali metal ions is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Bond dissociation energies of alkali metal ion-halouracil complexes, M+(XU), are determined using threshold collision-induced dissociation techniques in a guided ion beam mass spectrometer, where M+ = Li+, Na+, and K+ and XU = 5-fluorouracil, 5-chlorouracil, 6-chlorouracil, 5-bromouracil, and 5-iodouracil. The structures and theoretical bond dissociation energies of these complexes are determined from ab initio calculations. Theoretical calculations are also performed to examine the influence of halogenation on the acidities, proton affinities, and Watson-Crick base pairing energies. Halogenation of uracil is found to produce a decrease in the proton affinity, an increase in the alkali metal ion binding affinities, an increase in the acidity, and stabilization of the A::U base pair. In addition, alkali metal ion binding is expected to lead to an increase in the stability of nucleic acids by reducing the charge on the nucleic acid in a zwitterion effect as well as through additional noncovalent interactions between the alkali metal ion and the nucleobases.  相似文献

The gas phase reaction of Cu plasma and acetonitrile clusters is studied by the laser ablation-molecular beam(LAMB) method. Four series of clustered complex ions Cu+(CH3CN)n, CH2CN+(CH3CN)n,H+(CH3CN)n and CH3CHCN+(CH3CN)n are observed. Interestingly, the species and sizes of the product clusters vary observably when the plasma acts on the different parts of the pulsed acetonitrile molecular beam. When the laser ablated Cu plasma acts on the head of the beam, the metal acetonitrile complex clusters Cu+(CH3CN)n together with protonated acetonitrile clusters H+(CH3CN)n and deprotonated acetonitrile clusters CH2CN+ (CH3CN)n are domain, while the plasma acts on the middle of the beam. However,CH2CN+(CH3CN)n and H+(CH3CN)n along with the clusters CH3CHCN+(CH3CN)n turn out to be the main resulting clusters. By comparing the intensities and the cluster sizes of CH3CHCN+(CH3CN)n with H+(CH3CN)n and CH2CN+(CH3CN)n,the formation of CH3CHCN +(CH3CN)n is contributed to the intracluster ion-molecule reaction of acetonitrile clusters.  相似文献

Stabilities and intracluster reactions have been investigated by photoionization mass spectrometry for clusters composed of an alkali metal atom (M; Na and K) and acrylic ester molecules, CH(2)=CHCO(2)R, such as methyl acrylate (MA; R = CH(3)) and ethyl acrylate (EA; R = C(2)H(5)). The following two features are commonly observed in the photoionization mass spectra of M(CH(2)=CHCO(2)R)(n): (1) The ion with n = 3 is clearly observed as a magic number. (2) Fragmented cluster ions with the loss of ROH, [M(CH(2)=CHCO(2)R)(n) - ROH] are detected only for n = 3. These features are both explained by an intracluster oligomerization reaction initiated by electron transfer from the metal atoms. The magic number trimer is concluded to have the stable structure of cyclohexane derivatives as a result of oligomerization. The fragmentation reaction is explained by Dieckmann cyclization after anionic oligomerization to produce another isomer of the trimer. The intracluster electron transfer is also supported by theoretical calculation for Na(MA) based on density functional theory.  相似文献

Monovalent cations (M+ = Na+, K+, Rb+, and NH4+) and 12-crown-4 were assembled to new supramolecular cation (SC+) structures of the M+(12-crown-4)n (n = 1 and 2), which were incorporated into the electrically conducting Ni(dmit)2 salts (dmit = 2-thioxo-1,3-dithiole-4,5-dithiolate). The Na+, K+, and Rb+ salts are isostructural with a stoichiometry of the M+(12-crown-4)2[Ni(dmit)2]4, while the NH4+ salt has a stoichiometry of NH4+(12-crown-4)[Ni(dmit)2]3(CH3CN)2. The electrical conductivities of the Na+, K+, Rb+, and NH4+ salts at room temperature are 7.87, 4.46, 0.78, and 0.14 S cm-1, respectively, with a semiconducting temperature dependence. The SC+ structures of the Na+, K+, and Rb+ salts have an ion-capturing sandwich-type cavity of M+(12-crown-4)2, in which the M+ ion is coordinated by eight oxygen atoms of the two 12-crown-4 molecules. On the other hand, the NH4+ ion is coordinated by four oxygen atoms of the 12-crown-4 molecule. Judging from the M(+)-O distances, thermal parameters of oxygen atoms, and vibration spectra, the thermal fluctuation of the Na+(12-crown-4)2 structure is larger than those of K+(12-crown-4)2 and Rb+(12-crown-4)2. The SC+ unit with the larger alkali metal cation gave a stress to the Ni(dmit)2 column, and the SC+ structure changed the pi-pi overlap mode and electrically conducting behavior.  相似文献

The size-specific influence of alkali metal ions in the gradual transition from cluster rearrangement to solvation dynamics is investigated by means of molecular dynamics simulations for alkali metal cation-hexafluorobenzene systems, M(+)-C(6)F(6) (M = Na, K, Rb and Cs), surrounded by Ar atoms. To analyze such transition, different small aggregates of the M(+)-C(6)F(6)-Ar(n) (n = 1, ..., 30) type and M(+)-C(6)F(6) clusters solvated by about 500 Ar atoms are considered. The Ar-C(6)F(6) interaction contribution has been described using two different formalisms, based on the interaction decomposition in atom-bond and in atom-effective atom terms, which have been applied to study the small aggregates and to investigate the Ar solvated M(+)-C(6)F(6) clusters, respectively. The selectivity of the promoted phenomena from the M(+) ion size and their dependence from the number of Ar atoms is characterized.  相似文献

Structural information of gas phase complexes of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) cationized by one or two different alkali metal ions is inferred from MS and MS/MS experiments performed with an electrospray quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer. The rationale for selecting PEG was that its sites for cation binding are non-selective with respect to the repeating monomeric unit of the polymer, but there is selectivity with respect to the formation of an inner coordination sphere specific to each metal ion. The dissociation of [M1+ M2+ (EO23)], where EO23 = linear polymer of ethylene oxide, 23 units in length, resulted in loss of one of the alkali metal ions, with preference for loss of the larger cation, with no fragmentation of the PEG backbone for Na, K, Rb, and Cs. Li was not examined in this portion of the study. The selectivity for loss of the larger alkali metal ion was [Na+ K+ (EO23)] to [Na+ (EO23)] + K+ at 100%; [K+ Rb+ (EO23)] to [K+ (EO23)] + Rb+ at 93%; and [Rb+ Cs+ (EO23)] to [Rb+ (Eo23)] + Cs+ at 99%. The resolution of [M+ (EOx)] for x = 20-30 was dependent on the alkali metal ion, with the highest resolution observed for Cs+ and the lowest for Na+. These results are discussed with respect to the packing of the oxygen atoms on PEG (M.W.(avg) = 1000) around an alkali metal ion of different radius, and how this packing leads to an ensemble of unique structures, and therefore mobilities for [M+ (EOx)].  相似文献

We have carried out a series of molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the dynamics of X(-)-water (X = F, Cl, Br, and I) and water-water hydrogen bonds in aqueous alkali halide solutions at room temperature and also of Cl(-)-water and water-water hydrogen bonds at seven different temperatures ranging from 238 to 318 K. The hydrogen bonds are defined by using a set of configurational criteria with respect to the anion(oxygen)-oxygen and anion(oxygen)-hydrogen distances and the anion(oxygen)-oxygen-hydrogen angle for an anion(water)-water pair. The results of the hydrogen bond dynamics are obtained for two different cutoff values for the angular criterion. In both cases, similar dynamical behavior of the hydrogen bonds is found with respect to their dependence on ion size and temperature. The fluoride ion-water hydrogen bonds are found to break at a much slower rate than water-water hydrogen bonds, while the lifetimes of chloride and bromide ion-water hydrogen bonds are found to be shorter than those of fluoride ion-water ones but still longer than water-water hydrogen bonds. The short-time dynamics of iodide ion-water hydrogen bonds is found to be slightly faster, while its long-time dynamics is found to be slightly slower than the corresponding water-water hydrogen bond dynamics. Correlations of the observed dynamics of anion(water)-water hydrogen bonds with those of rotational and translational diffusion and residence times of water molecules in ion(water) hydration shells are also discussed. With variation of temperature, the lifetimes of both Cl(-)-water and water-water hydrogen bonds are found to show Arrhenius behavior with a slightly higher activation energy for the Cl(-)-water hydrogen bonds.  相似文献

A systematic study of cation-pi interactions between alkali metal ions and the cyclopentadienyl ring of ferrocene is presented. The alkali metal (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+) salts of the ditopic mono(pyrazol-1-yl)borate ligand [1,1'-fc(BMe2pz)2]2- crystallize from dimethoxyethane as multiple-decker sandwich complexes with the M+ ions bound to the pi faces of the ferrocene cyclopentadienyl rings in an eta5 manner (fc = (C5H4)2Fe; pz = pyrazolyl). X-ray crystallography of the lithium complex reveals discrete trimetallic entities with each lithium ion being coordinated by only one cyclopentadienyl ring. The sodium salt forms polyanionic zigzag chains where each Na+ ion bridges the cyclopentadienyl rings of two ferrocene moieties. Linear columns [-CpR-Fe-CpR-M+-CpR-Fe-CpR-M+-](infinity) (R = [-BMe2pz]-) are established by the K+, Rb+, and Cs+ derivatives in the solid state. According to DFT calculations, the binding enthalpies of M+-eta5(ferrocene) model complexes are about 20% higher as compared to the corresponding M+-eta6(benzene) aggregates when M+ = Li+ or Na+. For K+ and Rb+, the degree of cation-pi interaction with both aromatics is about the same. The binding sequence along the M+-eta5(ferrocene) series follows a classical electrostatic trend with the smaller ions being more tightly bound.  相似文献

The stoichiometry and the kinetics of oxidation of the cyanide complexes M(CN)n4- (M = Fe(II), Ru(II), Os(II), Mo(IV), and W(IV)) by the peroxydisulfate ion, S2O8(2-), and by the much more strongly oxidizing fluoroxysulfate ion, SO4F-, were studied in aqueous solutions containing Li+. Reactions of S2O8(2-) with M(CN)n4- are known to be strongly catalyzed by Li+ and other alkali metal ions, and this applies also to the corresponding reactions of SO4F-. The primary reactions of S2O8(2-) and SO4F- have both been found to be one-electron processes in which the equally strong O-O and O-F bonds are broken. The primary reaction of S2O8(2-) consists of a single step yielding M(CN)n3-, SO4-, and SO42-, whereas the primary reaction of SO4F- comprises two parallel one-electron steps, one leading to M(CN)n3-, SO4-, and F- and the other yielding M(CN)n-1(2-), CN-, SO4- and F-. The relationship between the rate constants and the standard free energies of reaction for the Li+-catalyzed reactions of SO4F- and S2O8(2-) with M(CN)n(4-), and for the uncatalyzed reactions of S2O8(2-) with bipyridyl and phenanthroline complexes MLn2+ (M = Fe(II), Ru(II), and Os(II)) studied previously, suggests that the intrinsic barrier for all three sets of reactions is similar, i.e., unaffected by the Li+ catalysis, and that the electron transfer and the breakage of the O-O and O-F bonds are concerted processes.  相似文献

Alkali metal cations often show pronounced ion-specific interactions and selectivity with macromolecules in biological processes, colloids, and interfacial sciences, but a fundamental understanding about the underlying microscopic mechanism is still very limited. Here we report a direct probe of interactions between alkali metal cations (M(+)) and dicarboxylate dianions, (-)O(2)C(CH(2))(n)CO(2)(-) (D(n)(2-)) in the gas phase by combined photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and ab initio electronic structure calculations on nine M(+)-D(n)(2-) complexes (M = Li, Na, K; n = 2, 4, 6). PES spectra show that the electron binding energy (EBE) decreases from Li(+) to Na(+) to K(+) for complexes of M(+)-D(2)(2-), whereas the order is Li(+) < Na(+) ≈ K(+) when M(+) interacts with a more flexible D(6)(2-) dianion. Theoretical modeling suggests that M(+) prefers to interact with both ends of the carboxylate -COO(-) groups by bending the flexible aliphatic backbone, and the local binding environments are found to depend upon backbone length n, carboxylate orientation, and the specific cation M(+). The observed variance of EBEs reflects how well each specific dicarboxylate dianion accommodates each M(+). This work demonstrates the delicate interplay among several factors (electrostatic interaction, size matching, and strain energy) that play critical roles in determining the structures and energetics of gaseous clusters as well as ion specificity and selectivity in solutions and biological systems.  相似文献

The M+[cyclohexane][Ar] (M = Li, Na, and K) cluster ions were investigated using infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in the C-H stretching region. The alkali metal cation binds to the cyclohexane ring above the ring on the S6 axis via eta3 coordination. The C-H stretching modes are perturbed due to binding of the metal cation and display a significant spread in frequency. The shifts are greatest for the Li+ and decrease for Na+ and K+ with increasing ionic radius. It has been observed that cyclohexane displays greater selectivity for Li+ over Na+ than the cyclic ether, 12-crown-4. The charge transfer interaction between Li+ and cyclohexane is believed to be responsible for the selectivity of Li+ over other alkali metal ions.  相似文献

Some ion-formation processes during fast atom bombardment (FAB) are discussed, especially the possibility of reactions in the gas phase. Divided (two halves) FAB probe tips were used for introducing two different samples into the source at the same time. Our results showed [M + A]+ ions (where M = crown ethers and A = alkali metal ions), can be produced, at least in part, in the gas phase when crown ethers and sources of alkali metal ion are placed on two halves of the FAB probe tip. The extent of this ion formation depends on the volatility of the crown ether and on steric factors. Cluster ions such as (M + LiCl)Li+, (2M + LiCl)Li+, [2M + K]+ and [2M + Na]+ are also observed to form in the gas phase. Unimolecular decompositions contribute to some ions detected in FAB. When the alkali ion salt and the crown ether are mixed together the probability of [M + A]+ ion formation increases significantly, regardless of the volatility of the crown ether.  相似文献
